About the Scosche LOC90 Speaker to RCA Line Output Converter

Bob Bihlmayer

Converts speaker-level signals to preamp-level

Scosche's LOC90 line output converter transforms high-level speaker wire signals to a set of line-level RCA outputs. If your car radio doesn't have preamp outputs, this 2-channel converter lets you tap into speaker wires to send up to a 4-volt signal to the preamp inputs on your 2-channel or mono amp.

The converter will turn on your amp when it senses an incoming signal, so there's no need for a turn-on wire. If you're installing a subwoofer, the package includes a wired remote control for adjusting the bass level from the front seat.

More details on the Scosche LOC90 Speaker to RCA Line Output Converter

Product Research

Features

Line Output Converter: The Scosche LOC90 Line Output Converter converts speaker wire (high-level) to RCA outputs (low-level) for the purpose of adding an aftermarket two-channel or mono amplifier to an existing factory or aftermarket stereo system which lacks low-level outputs. The LOC90 features up to 4 volts output and works with high power car stereos up to 50 Watts (RMS) per channel.

Wired Remote Control: The LOC90 also includes a convenient remote mountable volume control for precise control over a subwoofer amplifier's volume level from the front of your vehicle. The wired remote is fitted with an attached 17' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm male connector which plugs into the LOC90's minijack (3.5mm) remote input. The wired remote control is designed to be mounted under the dash using the included 3M tape or two self-tapping screws.

Connections: The LOC90 features four speaker level input wires and a stereo line-level output. There is also a +12V power wire, ground wire, and turn-on lead.

  • Speaker Inputs: Connect the left (+) speaker wire of your car stereo to the white wire of the LOC-90 and connect the left (-) speaker wire to the white/black wire of the LOC-90. Then connect the right (+) speaker wire to the gray wire of the LOC-90 and connect the right (-) speaker wire to the gray/black wire of the LOC-90.
  • RCA Outputs: Connect the RCA output jacks of the LOC-90 to the RCA inputs of your amplifier or EQ booster (Red = Right, White = Left).
  • Power/Ground: The +12V power wire (yellow) must be connected to your vehicle's constant battery power, while the ground wire (black) needs to be connected to your vehicle's metal surface.
  • Turn-On Lead: Signal sensing turn-on lead (blue/white) for aftermarket amplifier turn-on.

Output Level Adjustment: The LOC90 Line Output Converter is equipped with output level controls that can be adjusted for proper sound level matching. This done by inserting a small flat-blade or phillips-head screwdriver into the gain adjustment holes, located on top of the LOC-90. by turning clockwise, the gain for that individual channel, or the amount of sound allowed to pass through the LOC-90 is increased. By turning counterclockwise, the gain for that individual channels is decreased. If you feel that after increasing the volume of your stereo, the sound is too quiet, then equally increase both the left and right gains of the LOC-90 until the sound level is adequate. If the sound level is too loud with only a slight increase in stereo volume, or distortion (poor sound quality) is noticeable, then equally decrease the gains of the LOC-90.

Dimensions:

  • Line Output Converter: 2.1875" (w) x 1.125" (h) x 3.5625" (d)
  • Wired Remote Control: 1.9375" (w) x 0.875" (h) x 2.875" (d)

Q
Do you need to hook up the power, ground, and remote wire if your amp is already all wired to a remote on/off? I figured these wires were just for signal turn on/off.
john  Dec 01, 2023
1 answer
A
Since the Scosche LOC90 Speaker to RCA line output converter is active John, you will need to connect the power and ground for the converter to output a signal. If your amp already has a remote on/off wire connected you will not need to connect the Blue 12v turn on lead from the Scosche LOC90 to your amp. I hope this helps!

Q
ok i have a 2010 chevy cobalt 2.2 lt sedan i have a factory cd player in my car i want to hook up a amp an subwoffers to i have a scosche loc90 speaker to rca now can i slice my wires even thoe i got steering wheel controls i dont have on star or any of that ??
big daddy  Nov 21, 2023
1 answer
A
I would be happy to help, Marc. The Scosche LOC90 needs to be connected to power and ground, and your radio's speaker-level output signal. It does not affect any steering wheel controls, and only taps into the radio's speaker-level output signal. I hope this helps!

Q
How do I set the levels for the loc. My amp takes in 4 volts. This says it make 4 volts. Do I need to turn the levels all the way up to get the 4 volts?
roberto  Mar 30, 2023
1 answer
A
Generally, we would not turn the output or input levels of any device all the way up as this typically leads to distortion. It would be important to carefully experiment with the input/output levels of the amplifier and LOC in order to determine how they will interact with one another. The ultimate goal, typically, is to achieve the highest possible volume output from your speakers while avoiding distortion.

Q
How would I wire this if I was just using one channel/subwoofer? Just use one side correct? The other side would be left alone because i'm only using one channel/subwoofer? Thanks
michael  Jan 02, 2023
1 answer
A
Subwoofer amplifiers generally have left/right stereo input. When tying into a factory audio system, we generally want both left and right signal for our aftermarket subwoofer (unless we're tying into the wiring for a factory subwoofer to get our signal). The reason that we would want both left and right input signal is that some music may have bass on only one channel or another. If we only get signal from either left or right channel, then we could be missing bass that is present on the other channel.

Q
what color wires do i connect to on a 2013 vw bettle turbo converitable, and where are they located ? Please. Thank you.
j. b. ii  Mar 29, 2022
1 answer
A
There is a manual on the product in the crutchfield store when viewing it. Scroll down you will find the wiring schematic. Yellow is constant/accessories power. Black is ground (cars metal frame with no paint on the connections). White is the left speakers. Black is the right and Blue is the power on for the amp. For the VW I am not sure where to connect but in my Impala I had a pre-amp from the factory sending all the signals. I tapped into that for the amp switch. Otherwise what I would say is utilize the wires in the stereo at the front of the car. Crutchfield assistants might provide further input, they are available via call quite often. I called them to discuss the product too and get thoughts.

Does this act as a low pass? I have a factory sub that doesn't have a crossover so connecting just the RCA out to the harness causes highs to go to the sub. My head unit doesn't have a sub out, with this do the trick?
devon  Jun 30, 2019
3 answers
A
I don't really understand the question. A factory sub must have a low pass filter. No, this device does not have any signal filters at all. It's simply steps down speaker level input to line level input. If a full range signal comes in a full range signal goes out, if a low pass signal comes in, a low pass signal goes out.
ian  Jan 08, 2022
A
your question is a bit confusing. this does act as low pass for cars without rca outputs and without a factory subwoofer. if your car already has a factory subwoofer and you are trying to steal that signal from the plug this product will not work. you will need audiocontrols lci2 to convert that factory sub signal into something your new amp and subwoofer will like.
steven  Jul 08, 2019
A
i mainly got this thing because of my factory head unit, i didn't want to change it, and i hooked everything, being that it's factory, i had to get this thing to plug the rca's and connect the remote wire. it does the job for me

Q
i have a 2018 honda accord. how do i figure out which rear speaker wire color is positive and which 1 is the negative ?
shahan  Mar 30, 2018
4 answers
A
Take a 9 volt battery and apply power to the speaker wire terminals with the speaker wires disconnected. If the woofer pushes out, then that is the correct polarity. If the woofer sucked in, the polarity is opposite. Once you figure out which terminal is positive, the wire that belongs on that terminal will be you're positive wire
ian  Jan 08, 2022
A
Set a multimeter to measure DC voltage, and touch the speaker wires to the probes. If your probe is touching a wire with an opposite polarity, such as the positive probe to a negative wire, you will get a negative numerical reading. Try switching which probe you're using to get a positive reading instead.
codi  Mar 30, 2018
A
Use a multi meter to check the output. Set it on 12v and put the leads on the speaker terminal. If it doesn't read with a minus in front of the voltage then the red lead will be the positive and the other the negative.

The Scosche LOC90 has a signal sensing turn-on lead (blue/white) for connecting an aftermarket amplifier remote lead--this will automatically turn your amp on when a signal is present to the high-level inputs on the LOC90 and then turn it off when it stops receiving a signal. I hope that helps. My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=159

I would start at the converter. I set my converter around 75% and then gradually set the amp. Hope this helps

I would leave it in the middle just like plugging your phone to your radio if the volumes to high on the phone you will get distortion try adjusting the amp first might be just enough.

How long is the remote turn on wire?
evan  Sep 18, 2015

4 inches. You will need to add wire
ian  Jan 08, 2022
A
About 1FT. Short but if you just add a crimping sleeve and pinch it you can always add more wire to suit your purpose. I installed it in a friends car about 4wks ago, NO ISSUES works great! I would buy this unit again for a factory radio install.
dennis  Sep 21, 2015
A
I would say about 8 inches which is the same for all wires leading off. Definitely not long enough to be routed anywhere but long enough to tap directly into some rear speakers or harness behind stock HU.
jesse  Sep 20, 2015
A
Short... i think less than 12 in. ... plan to match/ have equal distance for remote wire same as rca's. So pan to extend it unless/ if you wire it right next to the amp. Meaning if you want to hide the LOC and need 5ft length for rca, get 5 ft of (blue)remote wire Also plan to get wires to run 1. power and 2.ground + 3. a fuse... (for 12v) I bought 6 ft. long red/black/blue 16 guage. This device requires 12v power & ground. You should * fuse the 12v - 5A is enough. You could probably use 18 -20 guage.
g  Sep 18, 2015
A
its pretty long. I don't know the exact length but I would say at least 4-5 feet long.

I have a 1994 Volvo 940 and am interested in using this to add an amp for a single sealed 10 inch subwoofer. ake signal from right(+ & -) and left speakers(+ & -) connect to loc... 1. now run 12v power from battery (w/fuse) 2. Run ground. Now you plug rca's into LOC and connect remote output to the amp. Adjust the LOC... done :)
g  Sep 18, 2015
A
The converter wires to you factory rear speakers and is also your remote power.
mickey  Aug 27, 2015
A
You splice the box's wires in line with the radio's output wires. So you can splice this product in at the rear speakers or directly behind the head unit. There is also a nice option with this that splices 12 volts power in so you can have your amp's remote spliced to it instead of all the way back to the head unit. When it receives a signal from the speaker outputs, it will put 12 volts on the remote wire and turn your amp on.
robert  Aug 24, 2015
A
You can tap into the rear speakers in the rear or just behind factory head unit. Either way works fine. Converter works great. Also has remote turn on built in. If you use the included bass knob you'll have full control at your fingertips. Just make sure you ground converter.
jon  Aug 23, 2015
A
Uu got it. Rear speakers, just as the instructions suggest. I used the rear power point (cigarette lighter) for the power source on the converter is an all time power. So you don't need to have one that turns on and off for the converter to dignal the amp to turn on. Remember, with this converter there is NO need to take the dash apart.
evan j.  Aug 23, 2015
A
If your installing the amp in the trunk the rear speakers are you best choice for source for input. This item requires two speaker level input a 12v input and a ground. Fron this it will give you two rca outputs and a 12v remote output.
