Really nice pair of headphones
Benjamin from Broad Run, VA on 3/18/2025
I paired these with an audioengine DAC3 and they sound amazing even from my iphone or ipad. Very clear and detailed and surprisingly decent base for headphones. I looked at more expensive options and after reading reviews I decided these were a great value and I was right. I have not tried them yet without the DAC3 but I will share if I have any different experience when I get around to trying them with my stereo. These definitely have the benefit of german precision. I am sure there are better sounding headphones but I would bet against any at this price.

My only wish would be that the sound be a bit more crisp. I do not have optimum hearing although I have a very good hearing aid so I do hear well and, indeed, sometimes have to lower the volume. I would like the sound to be a bit crisper while the tone is good. All in all, a good headset.

Not bad, but higher quality Sennheiser cans have spoiled me on these.
Gregory from BACLIFF, TX on 2/24/2024
Testing this against the great HD600s on a decent DAC and entry level JDS Atom 2 amp these sounded nearly as good and clear (yet far warmer) however because of the elevated mid-bass/high bass and low-mid-range tuning on these, turning it up to louder volumes really muddied everything up. The dac/amp combo however did clean up bass nicely assuming you keep the volume down but that isn't much fun. Bass got a bit more sloppy when playing directly from my Galaxy A32 phone. While the mids and highs sounded almost as good, 15% of my material can't get loud enough for the elevated bass and high-mids to drown out other frequencies or get too muddy for my taste. These are insanely comfortable and very well built despite the cheap thin plastic look, and they are built to last if cared for well. I considered keeping them for this reason and their overall warm signature The included cables are not good. They work but the short one is too short and the long one uses an adapter for 3.5mm that can put high leverage and possibly damage the very tiny connector on your devices. Also no taper so good luck using it on devices. I could see this being something that FPS gamers might consider using (that or the HD560s) as this destroys gaming headsets by miles in sound quality and imaging. Explosions in movies/gaming, podcasts, rock music and hip-hop also were really fun and enjoyable on these cans but other genres suffered a bit too much in various ways for me to want
Pros: Not bad for FPS gaming. At lower volumes it sounds almost as good as the HD600 but warmer. Extreme comfort: These annoy me less than HD600s when it comes to clamping force but don't stay on nearly as tight either: Could be an issue if tilting head a fair bit. Build quality: Thin plastic look but it's no joke. It's strong and flexible. If you take care of them I seriously doubt they are going to break. Fun for hip-hop and Rock but bass/low mids could get fatiguing after
Cons: Amp/dac needed imo: Bass is too sloppy without it and can't get loud enough on my phone all the time. Because of that I may as well spend 30-250$ more on the HD560s or HD600 series and get a good bit better sound quality, separation, imaging, volume and ability to handle more genre of music. Cost: Sennheiser are decent but overpriced at retail. Get them on sale as they often are. Cables: A complete joke. The HD600 adapter does 3.5 mm to 6.25 instead of the unwieldly 6.25 to 3.

I dont typically complain but...
Matthew Ryan from Idaho Falls, ID on 1/11/2024
Jeez guys, I wanted to tell y'all how much I LOVE these. I can't say I'd be telling the truth if I did. They kinda sound like I've put my home system into hallway or something. I guess you'd say they sound a bit canned. It's entirely possible that it's something with this particular pair, but I think I prefer my Beats which defeats my entire purpose of buying higher quality corded 'phones.
Pros: Very comfortable. Lightweight
Cons: Sound lacks the depth I feel should come from Sennheiser products.

Nice headphones for the price ( picked them up on sale). Look great.and very comfortable. And the sound is crystal clear. Also purchased a 10 foot extension cable for the headphone jack, as these phones are used in a large room. These headphone come with individual dedicated cable jacks(one standard traditional cable jack, and one smaller cable jack for your computer or phone. It also has a an adapter that you can just snap on to change jack sizes without changing the 1/4" cable. Buy these headphones and you are ready to rock on just about and source/component.
Pros: Comfortability and versatility and price
Cons: They are not wireless, so your listening target area is limited to the length of the cables (can be expanded with an extension cable)

Not as good as the good old days
Joel from Santee, CA on 10/12/2023
Good looking headphones and very comfortable. However, I didn't notice any substantial enhancement over other brands at half the price. Though to be fair, I have only listened to these headphones through my phone, so I don't know their full sonic capabilities. In my opinion, these headphones are not nearly as good as the old 414 open backs that were available in the late 70's. Of course at the time the product was made in Germany, and so perhaps that explains the so-so sonic quality.
Pros: Comfortable and sleek.
Cons: Good sound quality, but not exceptional.

I would say these are very good head phones in the $250 or under price point. I have only had them a day but, listened to a variety of rock music with them yesterday. Bass is solid in my opinion unless you're in to rap and hip hop. One minor concern is that it seems like they made the cords with thicker wire back in the day. Anyway look forward to more listening and they are very comfortable.
Pros: Good balanced sound with solid bass.
Cons: Could maybe have wider sound stage.

Truly a Hidden Gem
Daniel from Albany, GA on 2/2/2023
In the past I have used Sennheiser HD 300s and HD 560S. I was very pleased with them. Then I saw that the HD599 was on sale. The writeup said that it was a hidden gem in the Sennheiser lineup, so I decided to give it a go. I have been extremely pleased with the sound from these headphones. Clear sound while hearing every detail along with adequate bass. They are also the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. The color is a great improvement over the usual black seen on headphones. On top of all that with Crutchfield's I got a competitive price and really great service. The headphones shipped the day I ordered them and arrived soon after due to the Crutchfield practice of using UPS instead of the slow, unreliable "free" shipping used by other sites.
Pros: Clear, bright sound Pleasing color Very comfortable
Cons: None, best phones I have

Stephen from Tucson, AZ on 1/13/2023
Stunning sonic clarity and depth, just took me getting used to them a bit. My classic Sony MDR V-500 phones were so mid/high-range oriented that my first listen to the Sennheiser's almost sounded muddy. After using the HD599's for several days and going back to the older Sony phones I realized how superior the sound was from the 599's. VERY happy with my purchase and technical advice/help from the Crutchfield staff
Pros: Super comfortable/subtle clarity and balanced sonics.
Cons: A bit pricey but worth it.

Perfect for my needs!
Mark from Durham, NC on 11/16/2022
I had an older pair of Sennheiser's (HD555) that I loved but were falling apart. I did a lot of searching and decided that these 599's were the right balance of price, reviews, and impedence as I'd be using my phone as a primary music source. In hindsight , impedence wasn't so important as I added a headphone Amp layer. But, I really like the sound of open back headphones. The HD599 is simply an awesome headphone! My audio sources (Pandora, Spotify, YouTube) aren't audiophile-quality and so I could not justify spending more money. I am thrilled with this purchase. If you need totally quiet, noise canceling headphones- these aren't it. But these were exactly what I wanted for my needs.

The over-the-ear, open back design is exactly what I wanted. Because I planned to use them in a home environment I picked these, which allow me to hear ambient sounds while also still being immersed in very natural and clear music. The large ear cups and soft ear pads are great for long-term usage and are so comfortable that sometimes I forget I am using them.

Please listen to them
Michael from Cumberland, ME on 3/1/2022
As a big fan of Sennheiser headphones ( I own many ) there are 2 main reasons I love them. The sound fits the eclectic music I listen to and the HD599 does not disappoint. The sound is very colorful compared to my neutral HD600. Great bass for an open back headphone. The second reason is the fit. I have a larger head and the only manufacturers that are comfortable are Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic and AKG. Oh, thanks to Crutchfield for the 2 day shipping as its becoming very rare.
Pros: Comfort, sound, great bass for open back headphones
Cons: The shorter included cable should be a little more robust. It's hard to keep there cable straight

I waited a few weeks to write this review until I had used them for a while. I really like these headphones. My main objectives were comfort and good sound. These are by far the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn, especially when listening for a few hours. The ear cups are very large surrounding the ears, and they are a velvet-like material vs. the usual fake leather material (which makes my ears sweat). The sound is terrific. The treble is crisp and the bass is solid but subtle (not "boomy"). My only small complaint, which isn't a big deal really, is that I wish the detachable cable wasn't proprietary (you must use a Sennheiser cable). I consider these headphones moderately priced headphones and a good value as well as comfortable and very good sounding headphones.

Oh My!
Richard from Rancho Cucamonga, CA on 6/19/2020
I'm going to give the HD599's 5 stars. Because they're the best headphones ever? No. Because they're ultra comfortable and sound fantastic for phones in this price range. I put on Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" and was very impressed. The piano sounds like it's in the room, the strings rich and full, the sax solo is sweet and soulful, the bass is rock solid and Joel's vocals sound so clear you can almost see the pores in it. Put on Oingo Boingo's "Weird Science" and your senses will be pummeled by relentless three dimensional insanity just the way Danny Elfman intended. They are fairly unforgiving in that a bad recording will sound like a bad recording and the HD599's aren't shy about letting you know. Once you get the EQ dialed in they way you like it these phones will put a grin on your face your wife just won't understand. The build is plastic, but they're solid, well built and don't feel cheap. Are they intended for the road? No. Which is why they don't come with a case. Get another pair of phones for the gym, or to take jogging, or for the subway. These cans belong at home right along side your music collection.
Pros: Sound wonderful. Beautifully comfortable for hours of music or gaming without fatigue.
Cons: Only complaint is; I wish they came with better cords, but you can get better cords online from third party vendors if you really want them.

After looking at a lot of different options I thought..why I am trying to reinvent the wheel...those are a great pair and these HD599 keep the magic. With just a few tweaks to improve on an already great pair of comfortable..I repeat super comfortable headphones..I am loving my new HD599. Highly recommended.
Pros: Price, comfort
Cons: They are open back headphones, if that's a con for you..it's a pro for me cuz it allows them to breathe. Great for wearing all day.

Average sound IMO
Michael from Lake City, FL on 11/4/2017
I ordered these to replace a set of 15 to 20 year old HD545s. To me, they were not as good. Seemed more flimsy, construction-wise. The sound was not bad, but not as good as my old 545. And they were comfortable. They did work well with my Pro-ject Headbox (also from Crutchfield). But I just couldn't pull the trigger. The folks at Crutchfield were really great about taking them back. No hassles, and emailed me the shipping label. I give Crutchfield 5 Stars for their support. I ordered a more expensive, different brand/model, instead.
Pros: Comfortable and light.
Cons: Only average sound quality. Not bad, but not first rate. That's a subjective thing, though. Maybe it's about par in this price range, I can't say.

Cons: The $$ price!

Superb sound from a common model
Pedro from San Juan, PR on 2/4/2017
I am surprised with these headphones. I never thought that at this price a good headphone has such a good quality audio. These are my best bass sounding headphones, and they are very balanced from bass to high trebble. I also own the more expensive HD800 and these, being also Sennheiser, can be compared as a second in order. The HD800 are bright and don't yield such powerful bass tones. These are very warm but clear and very nice to hear for long periods. I also find them very comfortable. One could complain that they have plastic in almost every part of them, but considering their audio quality and sound reproduction, they are fine to keep them very carefully. It's true that they have fragile plastic parts, and that has to be considered for those who demand a tough product. Let me add here that Grados, Senn HD800 and almost every expensive brands have plastic parts on them, something that even me regrets. But, their sound are OK for me.
Pros: The audio quality is very professional.
Cons: Many plastic parts.
