Wire-free — and well worth the wait
Sennheiser took their time with the Momentum True Wireless headphones, and did it right. When I interviewed Axel Grell — the company's legendary headphone guru — we talked a little off the record. I asked him why Sennheiser didn't have any truly wireless earbuds, noting that it was already a major trend. He answered my question with a question: "would you be willing to wait for a truly wireless model that had the sound quality of Sennheiser's high-grade in-ears?"
The best-sounding true wireless headphones I've heard yet
Fast-forward to today and we have the 100% wire-free Momentum headphones. There is no connecting cord between the left and right earbud, and music plays wirelessly via Bluetooth. I've spent some time with them, and to my ears they are the best-sounding truly wireless headphones available.
A sound profile based on Sennheiser's best
It makes sense that these headphones sound so good. According to Grell, the driver design is informed by Sennheiser's flagship IE 800 S in-ear headphones, some of the most revered wired in-ears on the planet. While you shouldn't expect quite that level of sound quality, the Momentum True Wireless earbuds do deliver Sennheiser's signature smooth highs, articulate mids, and satisfying bass. They also have a large, "outside-the-head" soundstage with precise imaging.
My hands-on impression
Since my discussion with Axel Grell, I'd been chomping at the bit to try these earbuds. When I got my hands on a finished sample, I was not disappointed. They arrived packed in a compact charging case lined in designer fabric. It felt as pleasant as it looks — I handed it to my wife and she noted that it was one of the nicer headphone cases I'd ever brought home.
The case opened with a satisfying snap to reveal the sparkling silver earbuds. They looked larger than the average in-ears, but when I got them positioned for listening, they felt ultra-light. If you've never worn wireless earbuds without a connecting cord, it really is very liberating. So for those of us who value sound quality most, it's nice to have a pair of truly wireless headphones with this level of clarity and detail.
A closer connection to my music
These Momentum True Wireless headphones actually gave me a new appreciation for The 1975's critically-acclaimed album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. The first time I heard the album, I actually didn't see what the fuss was about. I was admittedly listening through some average car speakers, but I thought it sounded like a muddied mess.
Through the Momentums, I was drawn deeper into each song. When I could more clearly hear distinct bits in the smorgasbord of sounds — auto-tuned vocals, afro-beat drums, synths, jazz pianos, acoustic guitar riffs, and so much more — everything somehow became more cohesive. It was also easier to pick out background ad-libs and artifacts, plus all these interesting instrument choices the band made throughout. I enjoyed the album so much through these headphones, that I'm almost embarrassed that I initially dismissed it.
Secure, comfortable fit
One thing I've learned about in-ears: their sound is only as good as their noise isolation. And that is especially true with these headphones. Using the earbuds right out of the box, I couldn't get a proper fit. Sound quality suffered, and I heard what I perceived as distortion in the right ear.
Fortunately, Sennheiser includes four sizes of soft silicone ear tips to ensure you find a comfortable, secure fit. I found a larger size that kept the earbuds stable and helped block out external sounds. Suddenly they sounded like a whole new pair of headphones!
The compact, fabric-lined charging case looks and feels really nice.
Touch control over music and calls
True wireless headphones are made for people on the go, so Sennheiser included some features that make listening more convenient. Each earbud has a touch panel built in for controlling music and phone calls. You can even activate Siri or Google Assistant with a tap of the right earbud.
There is a bit of a learning curve involved with the touch controls, but once I got the hang of them they were pretty handy. I didn't have to reach for my phone every time I wanted to adjust the volume. Pro tip: when adjusting the earbuds so they fit properly, grab them by the side — the touch panel is pretty sensitive and you can easily pause your music by accident.
Charging case banks hours of power
You get about four hours of listening on a single charge. But the included case banks enough power to recharge the earbuds twice while you're on the move. Plus you can pack it neatly inside a bag or purse — with no worries about pulling out a mess of tangled wires when you're ready to use the earbuds.
Make sound adjustments with Sennheiser's free app
To tweak the out-of-the-box sound, download the free Smart Control app to your Apple® or Android™ device. The app's "emotional equalizer" screen lets you make tonal adjustments based on your mood. Need to hear your surroundings? Transparent hearing modes let you choose how much ambient sound the earbuds let in.

Features
Overview: The Sennheiser Momentum Truly Wireless (M3 IETW) headphones are two individual ear buds with no connecting wires. They connect to your smartphone or tablet (and to each other) via Bluetooth. Four pairs of silicone ear tips (XS, S, M, L) are included for a comfortable fit. The Truly Wireless headphones come with a charging case for storage, and for recharging the batteries.
Bluetooth: The Momentum Truly Wireless headphones feature Bluetooth version 5.0 which pairs to your phone or audio device in seconds. You can make and receive phone calls and stream audio wirelessly in a range of up to 33' (10 meters), depending upon environmental conditions. The headphones have the following profiles: Headset Profile (HSP), Hands-Free (HFP), Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP), and Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). If your audio source supports aptX, aptX LL, or AAC, music is automatically played in high audio quality.
Rechargeable Batteries: The Momentum Truly Wireless headphones are powered by built-in 3.7VDC Lithium-Polymer rechargeable batteries. The left earbud's battery has a 60 mAh battery, while the right earbud's battery is 85mAh. In addition, the charging case has a 600mAh battery. The complete charging cycle of the charging case and earphones is approximately 1.5 hours. The battery in the charging case charges via USB-C power (5V, 650 mA) using the supplied cable from a laptop, an AC-powered USB charging port, or a mobile 12-volt USB charging port. Fully-charged batteries in the earbuds provide approximately 4 hours playback. The charging case provides an additional 8 hours of additional playback time to the earbuds.
Phone/Music Controls: Controls for music playback and phone call functions are located on separate earbuds. Both earbuds are equipped with 5/8" diameter touch control panels. The left earbud controls Volume Down, and music playback functions Play/Pause, Next Track, and Previous Track. The right earbud controls Volume Up, and phone call functions Accept call, End Call, Reject Call. Touching both control panels simultaneously lets you pair and connect the earbuds to your Bluetooth mobile device.
Microphones: The Truly Wireless earbuds are equipped with a beam-forming, noise cancellation, dual microphone system. Multiple microphones distributed between the two earbuds are used for both phone calls and noise cancellation.
Voice Prompts: The earbuds provide a voice prompt to confirm certain functions and conditions. Voice Prompts include subjects such as Power ("Power On", "Power Off"), Bluetooth ("Connected", "Pairing", "Pairing cancelled/successful/failed"), Battery Status ("Battery Status" (percent), "Recharge headset"), Phone Calls ("Call Rejected", "Call Ended"), and Volume ("Volume Minimum", "Volume Maximum"). On the Smart Control app, you can change the language of the prompts (8 languages available), choose between voice prompts and beep sounds, or deactivate the status messages.
Smart Control App: In addition to the on-board controls, the Momentum Truly Wireless in-ear headphones can be controlled by Sennheiser's new Smart Control app for Android and iOS devices. The app lets you personalize and enhance the sound to suit your current mood with the Emotional Equalizer. The Transparent Hearing function lets you adjust how much of your surroundings you can hear while wearing the earbuds. You can shut out your surroundings if you want to concentrate on your music, or allow ambient sounds in if you need to listen for announcements, or carry on a conversation with another person, without having to remove the earbuds. Firmware updates for the earphones are also available through the app. The Smart Control app is compatible with iOS devices running version 11.0 and later, and Android devices with version 7.0 and up.
