Sony WF-1000XM5
Crutchfield customer from Seattle on 9/16/2023
I've had the previous model for less than three years and the battery in one bud is dying. So a $300 pair is ready for the garbage already. I don't find that acceptable. The sound quality is good but the lack of longevity trumps that.

Probably 5 stars, except when compared to the XM4.
Crutchfield customer from WEST BEND, WI on 9/13/2023
I was an early adopter of the XM3 and a day one buyer of the XM4 and of these. Audio quality: indistinguishable from the XM4, although never did side-by-side tests. I think only experienced audiophiles with impeccable streaming sources will notice a difference. Fitment/weight: supremely more comfortable. I don't usually have issues with the XM4 (the complaints about them being large are valid, but apparently I have large enough ears) and never did with the XM5. But the fitment has downsides too, see the next section. Noise canceling: minor improvements, except (1) certain frequencies that did come through could have a computer-y, processed quality to them, and (2) because these earbuds are smaller, wind or air could rush in around the buds and be heard (noticeable while running). For the same reason, they were slightly more prone to jostle especially when talking or opening your mouth, leading to gaps in noise canceling and overall sound quality. Overall the larger XM4 feel more stable in my ear. The smooth finish to the buds and case was actually annoying to get used to. I think the matte finish of the XM4 makes them easier to handle. The redesigned tips are a plus. They have a mesh guard separating the ear from the speaker channel- great addition for cleanliness. But the foam is different, softer and less thick, I prefer the previous foam's tighter fit. The Bluetooth pairing method is more annoying. I experienced minor connectivity

Good sound, poor ANC
The foam eartips are uncomfortable to me and they do slide out of my ears after a few hours, regardless of eartip size. I suppose I'm more of a silicone eartip fan, but that is hardly my biggest gripe. I've gone through 3 sets of these earbuds and the ANC simply does not work. In spending probably a total of 2 hours across all three sets of earbuds, Sony determined them to be defective but Crutchfield has an excellent swap policy so I've just being exchanging my earbuds with Crutchfield. The sound quality is excellent and I'm in meetings a lot and people say my calls are crystal clear except when I'm around other people. Then the ANC simply does not cancel our their background noise and I can't hear anything in my meetings due to the ambient noise around me, despite the app saying ANC is in fact on and working. I've read countless reviews on these earbuds and everyone seems to claim the ANC on these are about as good as the Bose QC2 but I can't agree with that. However, I was able to find one review that did claim the ANC was very poor and some comments/responses to that article agreed with the author. I can't believe Sony has 3 back to back to back defective sets of earbuds, I just think they really screwed up their launch batch of earbuds and I can't wait for them to eventually fix these. So I'm going to return them again for something else. These are a supreme disappointment as the sole reason I wanted these were for the apparent ANC.
Pros: Sound quality
Cons: Inoperable ANC on 3 different sets of earbuds (claimed defective by Sony) Eartips uncomfortable Body is slippery and difficult to remove from ear

Easy to setup. Excellent product, great song. Hoping for long battery life. I have M4 model and batteries lasted a little over a year. I will admit that I used them many hours.

Decent, but a little overpriced.

This is my first wireless set of earbuds or IEM's if you will. I wouldn't trust these to stay put when i'm doing something vigorous like running, but if your doing something stationary it should be fine most the time your wearing it. I still check them periodically to make sure they did not fall out or came lose. Comfort wise they are tolerable, i have problems with over the ear headphones smashing my ear lobes that are sensitive to pressure. Audio quality, these don't deliver much on bass line hits but are still pleasant to listen to. The mids and highs seem accurate accurate enough. To get something noticeably better I would have to go with something much more expensive from brands like Audeze or Campfire Audio that has separate drivers for each function. The noise rejection aspect of it works good, its not amazing but its works ok for blotting out background noise if your in an office. Even with NR active, the audio on most tracks still delivers acceptable fidelity. I briefly compared these to my HiFiMan (Sundara) Planar Magnetic wired headphones, they can't compete with it but for what these do i'm OK with that, for comedic relief I will mention my wired headphones cost about the same as these.
Pros: Easy Charging Portable Fits in your pocket - compact Fast Charging Simple to use Comes with extra tips for the ears.
Cons: The (expandedable) tap functions on the earbuds have very limited functionality and are specific to supported applications only. Does not pair with Samsung smart TV's.

I had the WF-100XM4 headphones before these and absolutely loved them. Best ANC I have found on a headset. These sound just as good although I find the new shape and size to be difficult in handling. I drop/fumble with these a lot more than my older ones. My old ones started having weird battery life issues. Not sure if it was tied to a firmware update or not but the next firmware update made it worse.
Pros: Great sound. Amazing ANC
Cons: Shape/size

I upgraded from the Sony WF-1000XM3 to the Sony WF-1000XM5. Boy, what a difference. I could never wear the XM3's for longer than 1.5 to 2 hours before I had to remove them. Well with the XM5's, I have even forgotten that I had them in. I have worn these for up to 4 hours with absolutely no issues. Oh yeah, the sound quality is great. They could make the Sony Headphone App a bit more flexible regarding controlling with finger taps and their small size make them a bit fidgety when removing from the charging case.
Pros: Size
Cons: Size

Not worth it - previous model (WF-1000XM4) has MUCH better sound isolation and sound in general. I understand that Sony tried to make them smaller than previous models and yes, they are smaller and look less bulky - well unfortunately sound and sound isolation was affected by it. So, if you're looking for esthetics and don't mind paying around S300 that I did out of curiosity then sure go for it - if you are looking for sound quality and better sound isolation as well lower price range then WF-1000XM4 will be the right choice. I would gladly return mine unfortunately I was so sure that WF-1000XM5 cream de la cream that got rid of box as well as all the documentation before i realized that I'd been duped :)
Pros: smaller than previous model both earbuds and charging case - looks better.
Cons: not as good sound AND sound isolation than WF-1000XM4
