The Wrangler-cam for factory radios

Brandmotion's 9002-8847 rear-view camera integrates nicely into the rugged design of your Jeep Wrangler and displays everything it sees on the factory touchscreen radio if you have one. The camera's wide view and visibility for night driving make it a must-have for the hard-drivin' Wrangler owner. Use it for off-road reversing when you need to watch out for stumps and stuff, or install this cam with the optional parking lines activated if you're a town & country driver.

You'll hardly notice it

Brandmotion includes an adjustable bracket and camera head extension piece so you can mount the camera between the spokes of a wide variety of rear-mounted spare tires, including aftermarket tires. You'll also find the wiring harness needed for factory integration as well as a handy module that plugs into your Jeep's OBD-II port and reprograms the factory radio to be compatible with the camera.

Installing this camera yourself? Here's what you should know.

What does it do? Unless otherwise noted, a backup camera is only intended for use backing up your vehicle. (If you require a front-view or constant rear-view camera, check for that capability.)

What tools and supplies will I need? A panel tool, a wire cutter/stripper, a soldering iron, and a rosin-core solder with heat shrink tubing are recommended, along with whatever tools are needed to remove the radio from the dash.

How much wiring is required? Wiring instructions vary from camera to camera. Some cameras have power wiring that can only be connected near the radio. Others let you power the camera at compatible reverse lights. In all cases, the camera must be wired for power and ground, the camera's video output must be connected to the radio/monitor, and the radio/monitor must be connected to a reverse trigger in your vehicle. Some radio replacement interfaces supply a reverse trigger wire for the radio -- using that wire to power your camera will damage the interface.

Will the included video cable be long enough? You'll need to route the camera's video cable from its mounting location outside your vehicle into your vehicle's cabin and all the way to the screen in the dash. This often requires drilling a small hole in your vehicle or filing some metal and or plastic. You'll also need to estimate the length of cable needed to run from the camera to the dash, which will not be a straight shot. Each camera's cable length is listed.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Product Research

Features

Jeep Wrangler Camera Kit: The BrandMotion Jeep Wrangler Camera Kit (9002-8847) allows you to add a rearview camera to select Jeep Wranglers JK (including Unlimited version) with a factory radio display screen. The camera kit includes a rearview camera, spare tire mounting bracket, wiring harness, and hardware.

Note: This rear-view camera kit is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

Vehicle Compatibility: The BrandMotion Jeep Wrangler Camera Kit (9002-8847) is designed specifically for 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK (including Unlimited version) that feature a factory radio display screen. The rearview camera kit includes an OBD-II programming module for the factory radio, eliminating the need for dealer programming. Your Jeep Wrangler can have a rear-mounted factory or aftermarket spare tire wheel.

CMOS Backup Camera: The BrandMotion Jeep Wrangler Camera Kit features a CMOS backup camera that delivers 648 x 488 lines of resolution with a 170° wide viewing angle. The CMOS camera has a low-light lux rating of 0.5 for driving at night.

Park Assist Lines: The backup camera provides parking assist lines on the screen of your vehicle's factory radio display monitor. These parking lines are there to assist you when backing up into a parking space. There are two vertical lines which help you judge the left and right edges of the parking space and your vehicle. There are also 4 color-coded horizontal lines that are used to distinguish how close you are getting to the end of the parking spot - Green (Clear), Orange (Getting Close), Yellow (Very Close), and Red (Stop).

Note: You can activate the Park Assist Lines by cutting the green wire (labeled "Parking Line") in the camera's harness.

Spare Tire Mounting Bracket: The BrandMotion Jeep Wrangler Camera Kit comes with a spare tire mounting bracket to mount the rearview camera inside your spare tire on back of your Jeep Wrangler. The adjustable neck of the spare tire mounting bracket allows you to swivel the neck up, down, left, and right to fit the camera head between the different spoke patterns on varying wheels. Also, included in the kit are two camera head extension brackets (short & long) to work with varying wheel depths. The spare tire mounting bracket is designed to work with both factory and aftermarket wheels for the Jeep Wrangler.

Customer Q&A

Q
Will this work with manual transmission?

To my knowledge; yes. Take a look at the instruction manual available online. I have a manual transmission in my Jeep and have the Brandmotion camera just like this but for aftermarket radios. On it, for manual transmission vehicles, you tap into the reverse light lead in the Jeep's wiring in the passenger side kick panel. Can't remember the color code on the wire. The other end connects to the reverse "trigger" lead on the Brandmotion unit. When the Jeep is shifted into reverse, that lead sees voltage which in turn causes the radio's display to switch to the camera view. This unit, for factory radios, may be wired slightly differently. Please verify the info in the manual before ordering. My wife's Jeep which I installed this unit in, has an automatic transmison.

The installation did not involve the transmission. Wires are run to the radio/GPS and then the radio was reprogramed. Should work.

I have purchased this system and installed it. It is working great. I would like to know if I can turn off the "CHECK ALL SURROUNDINGS" banner the pops up when the jeep is shifted into reverse? It takes up too much of the screen.

I noticed it does take up a lot of the screen also, but it does go away after a few seconds. I have not tried to turn it off yet. I would be interested in turning it off also.

To my knowledge, no. I believe it is programmed into the OEM Jeep head unit so that when it sees input (signal) from a reverse camera, the alert banner pops up. My wife's Jeep gives the same message after I installed this camera. Not a function of the camera itself but the Jeep's head unit, I believe. Probably "enabled" when you perform the OBDII flash for the camera.

Q
Will this backup camera work with aftermarket touch screen head units? My Jeep doesn't have touch screen, so I would need a new head unit as well. Any recommendations for that?

This particular model is made specifically for integration with OEM Jeep head units. I don't recall the model #, but there is a Brandmotion model with the same equipment minus the OBDII flashing unit that is made for connection to aftermarket head units. It also costs less because it doesn't have or need the OBDII flash module. I used that model in my Jeep and connected it to my aftermarket head unit. My wife purchased a Jeep with an OEM radio and I used this model in her's.

I'm sorry, my jeep has a factory touch screen. I was thinking about upgrading mine but I have watched videos and none of the ones I've found provide an answer to your question. I wish you luck in your quest

This model is made to integrate with Jeep Wrangler factory touch screen radios. There is a version (can't remember model # at the moment) which is the same thing except it doesn't have the OBD2 flash unit or the plug made to plug directly to a Jeep factory touch screen head unit as it is made for connection to an aftermarket touch screen head unit. and those two things aren't needed. Bonus is it is less expensive than this kit. I'm running that version and have it connected to an Alpine i207-WRA head unit which I love but there are many good aftermarket touch screen head units at various price points that would be suitable. Comes down to the features you want and amount you want to spend.. Good luck in your search.

Is there anyway to buy the mount/bracket without the camera? I need the bracket only.

We do not offer the bracket by itself but you can try contacting Brandmotion directly. You can reach their Customer Service department by dialing: 877-276-6456

Q
Does this camera require the stock head unit to have navigation? Mine is the factory touch screen without Navi.

As long as your radio has the video input in the back, it will work. Contact the dealership to find out for sure. They should be able to pull up the information using your VIN number.
steve  Nov 28, 2017

I cannot say for sure as mine had the Nav too. I would think it should work as the screens are the same. The Brandmotion website appears to say you just need the touchscreen and does not mention nav. You could email Brandmotion directly to confirm. They responded quickly when I asked which models had the grid lines before I ordered from Crutchfield.
