XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles

I just replaced some old XTC 6" X 9" baffles that I put in my truck in 1984. The speakers are in great shape, so I just replaced the XTCs. They do a great job of keeping the dirt and water out of the speakers.

Improve sound and keep water out of the back of your speakers.
Crutchfield customer from Jackson, GA on 6/20/2021
I went to replace the factory speakers in my new to me 2019 Ram Rebel and when I removed the speaker from the front passenger door I was greeted by by a stream of water. Well since I spent good hard earned money on some really nice Infinity Primus speakers, I chose to reinstall the factory speaker and go order some baffles to protect the new Infinity speakers. I placed my order for the XTC baffles and three days later they were delivered. I cut a small hole to feed the speaker wire through, mainly because the air space in the baffles was insufficient for the sound that I was looking for and my primary reason for their purchase was to keep water off my new Infinity speakers. I'd highly recommend these baffles for anyone that has issues with water getting on/in the back of their speakers and they do improve the sound.
Pros: Easy to install.
Cons: Non.

Crutchfield customer from Lakeland, FL on 12/30/2020
Good for protecting your speakers against the elements, but this baffling definitely affects the low end response of the speakers. Even after cutting a port hole in the baffling. I chose not to use these for my install simply because I was more concerned with sound quality than protection against the elements.

Didnt fit am crying
Josep from Soldotna AK on 11/15/2020
They did not fit my 2016 Patriot and even after modification of the speaker slot on my door i couldnt get it to fit quite right. When i did get everything set up it muffled my music quite heavily so i just removed it and gave up. I have no idea how these would sound in a car they actually fit in so I cannot say they are bad for all vehicles. However i would not recommend these for a jeep patriot.
Pros: They felt like they were good quality foam. Were pretty strong.
Cons: Did not fit in my 2016 Jeep Patriot. Muffled Sound when i finally got them in.

Barely used them so far...
Alexander from BROADVIEW HTS, OH on 2/29/2020
Although I barely used them, i already know they will kill the vibration between the speaker and sheet metal, the only downside is I had to cut them and poke holes for the wires, but that's to be expected.
Pros: No speaker vibration, stylish, protected from trunk dust (if yours is dirty...)
Cons: Had to modify factory grille because it raised the speaker a bit.

Manual windows
ROBB K. from Wichita, KS on 1/7/2020
I installed these on the doors of my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. They said they would fit and they did; but, I could not roll the windows down all the way. Half way down the window frame and gear would hit the baffle, not much clearance between the window and the speaker magnet. They did contain the base and prevent 90% of rattling, unfortunately I could not use them.
Pros: They did prevent rattling
Cons: Could not use, they are to deep and to wide for manual windows.

A great item to include in your system upgrade
Crutchfield customer from Fort Lauderdale, FL on 10/19/2019
I ordered the shallow sized baffles as the speakers I had weren't very deep and I wanted to make sure there would be plenty of room to install them in my vehicle. They offer decent sound absorption and dampening of bass responses from the speakers. Since my vehicle never came from the factory with baffles installed, I have a better-performing sound system. More sound and vibration stays inside the vehicle while there's much less of it heard outside. I think these are a must-have item for any sound system upgrade you make.
Pros: Reduces bass vibration Reduces sound heard outside the vehicle Helps retain more sound inside the vehicle

Good for what they're intended for ...
Richard from Sandown, NH on 8/28/2018
Fit perfect and expect they will do what they're intended to do - protect the speakers from water and dirt that slips in through the horizontal window channel. Comments and claims to the contrary, they're not (in my view) designed for or intended to improve the quality of sound. However, if your application includes speakers that function as woofers, don't forget to cut in a port at the bottom of the baffles, or the quality of sound will be negatively affected. I suspect that's the reason for the one star rating from others who submitted reviews.
Pros: Fit perfect
Cons: None

Recommended by an online sales advisor when I ordered some 6x9 door speakers. They were way to big to fit into my doors. After doing a little testing, I decided they didn't do much, if any, to enhance the sound so I didn't bother to try to modify them to fit. Just left them in the box and moved on with my install.
Pros: I only wasted my money.
Cons: I wasted my money. They didn't fit in the doors of my 2010 Highlander. From what I could tell without fully installing them, they didn't do anything to enhance the sound of my new speakers.

Finally a solution to the problem of water destroying speaker cones in your car's doors. Not to mention the better sound and stronger mid bass from adding a baffle to control the rear wave. Now to find a foam ring to couple the speaker's front output to the door panel so that all the sound is directed into the listening area.
Pros: Easy installation, better sound,no chance of vibration between the speaker and door panel.
Cons: no place for the speaker wires to enter, had to punch a hole through with a knife but I did it on the bottom so water can drain if it were to enter.

They baffle me
VT from Berwyn IL on 3/29/2014
These are at best used as a prophylactic against accidental damage, since the internal volume is so small it killed the bass on my rear-deck mounted 6x9's. I could have cut a hole in the bottom to let the woofer move freely, and use the trunk as the cabinet, but believe in using things as-is or not at all. I don't have a sub (yet) so I'm keeping them in case I actually want to protect the woofers from the subsonic pressure of a sub acting upon them from inside my trunk. 40 years ago, Thiel & Small came up with box volume calculations for woofers that are widely used today, and these baffles seem to defy these rules of physics by severely limiting the air volume to the rear of the speakers.
Pros: Inexpensive
Cons: Design is not ideal for long-throw woofers that are capable of moving lots of air.

protection is a must.
Tim from st. louis on 3/22/2014
you will definitely need these if you have 6x9s in your rear deck and if you have subwoofers in your trunk because not only do they help your speakers sound better they protect them from blowing due to the compression of your trunk closing and your subwoofers pounding
Pros: nice fit and good seal.
Cons: None

XTC speaker baffles
Eric from Honolulu, HI on 2/6/2014
These baffles are great. My speakers have more depth and bass from coaxials which were like that prior to the installation. Only issue I ended up with was having too much baffle in the door as I should have chosen the shallow depth as opposed to the normal one I chose. An experience for the next time I purchase these items.
Pros: Better sound and speaker protection while in the door panels

Very good product..........
Earp from Mars Hill N.C on 1/13/2014
We think these baffles work great for keepin moisture off your speakers and they make speakers sound better than they do without them... Some of the reviews say the baffles make speakers sound bad but with this pair and the 2 pair of 5X7" baffles we bought from Crutchfield at the same time make the 5th pair of them we have bought.... We also have 2 pair of the 6.5" round baffles which are behind 2 pair of HiFonics component mids we have.....
Pros: Performance......
Cons: None.......

These are worthless!!
chappy from SF on 11/21/2013
I installed these in my 2005 Honda Accord with some new Kicker 6x9's. These killed my bass so I tried modifying but cutting out the bottom, then ended up just taking them out and throwing them away. I am actually upset that I was recommended these by my Crutchfield adviser. What a waste of money and time.
Pros: NONE
Cons: Kills the bass, makes sound hollow and flat, not worth the "protection" they give.

XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles
Ben Christian from Memphis, TN on 3/21/2011
I figured that since I have subs the baffle might act like a barrier and reduce the ill affect the sound waves from the subs might have on the bass response of my 6x9s. Well, I figured since they were new it just might be an issues of break in. After a couple weeks I could actually notice a slight difference, but still the bass was practically nonexistent. Nearly everyone that bought the Alpine SPR- 69C speakers seemed pleased, so I doubt it's the speaker. I have yet to remove the baffle to see if it actually is the problem, so I can't truly blame the baffles as of now. Nonetheless, it's sad that my Alpine SPR-12C speakers up front have just as much bass as my amped 6x9s.

consider the 3 inch deep ones instead of 5 inch
Curt from Spokane. WA on 3/11/2011
The 5 inch ones were too deep and got squished amongst the trunk lid hard ware. The end result for me on this install was marginal. I did previously put some in my father in law's car and I heard a cleaner better sound for sure. All though he doesn't like much bass and really likes clean highs.

good idea.but needs work
Joseb from Rochelle IL on 11/5/2010
I put these under my 2 new 6x9 alpines to keep them dry. at first i didnt like them because they distorted the base way to much. then i decided to put dynamat on the inside and out to keep them solid and stop the wierd distortion they added. The speakers hit crazy hard for most bass with this but couldnt hit the lows without ratttling my rear deck. so i then cut and made a makeshift port for both of them. They act like boxes for subs now and the volume difference is insane. The lows flow smoothly and the mid bass hits make my chest thump. all in all its a good product after a little bit of fine tuning

XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles
Joe from Port Orchard, Wa on 8/18/2010
Installed them on my Infinity Kappa 6X9's 693.9i's, which are hanging from the rear deck on the car, extending into the trunk, was hoping for some protection from the subs, they did do that, but they did cut the sound level on the 6X9's and rattled against against the speaker frames. Removed them. They are a good idea, but the rattle against the speaker frames was just too annoying.

XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles
Weigel21 from Kansas on 1/21/2010
I figured they'ed reduce the vibration of the speakers mounted to the rear deck and given I have subs the baffle might act like a barrier and reduce the ill affect the sound waves from the subs might have on the bass response of my 6x9s. I had the Alpines amped at 56RMS to each speaker, so I figured they'd have no problems whatsoever hitting down to a mere 80Hz. Boy was I wrong. The speakers seemed to not hit anything below 200hz. I could set the HPF on my deck at 80Hz or 200Hz without hearing the slightest difference. In fact, I would even wager they weren't hitting anything below 500Hz. Well, I figured since they were new it just might be an issues of break in. After a couple weeks I could actually notice a slight difference between 80Hz and 200Hz, but still the bass was practically nonexistent. I ended up cutting out a 1"x3" slot in the baffle and it actually helped a little, but not nearly as much as I'd hoped. My 15 year old factory 6x9s were easily able to hit lower, they just didn't sound as clear at any frequency. Even now they don't seem to have any bass and they are surely fully broken in by now. Nearly everyone that bought the Alpine SPS-69C2 speakers seemed pleased, so I doubt it's the speaker. I have yet to remove the baffle to see if it actually is the problem, so I can't truly blame the baffles as of now. Nonetheless, it's sad that my Alpine SPS-46C2 speakers up front (being feed 26RMS from my CDA-9833) have just as much bass as my amped 6x9s.

XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles
Mike from Minneapolis, MN on 4/10/2009
I'm not sure I like these yet. I purchased these for my 6x9 Aplines that are mounted in a partition wall of my Ford Econoline van. The backs of the speakers were open to the cargo area and I felt I needed some speaker protection as well as something to help with the accoustics. I did a complete system install and I have not tried it without them. I think these baffles may be killing some of my sound.

2004 Toyota Corolla
George from Southern, Il. on 6/6/2007
They did make the bass tighter, more clear, thus it distorting easier at lower volume. Does as advertised well thus the 5 star rating. Found I can turn it up a bit more without having them & when it does begin to distort, it's more "spread out", less noticable. Seems to be easier on the speaker without, just in case. Crutchfield refunded me without needing to return due to shipping costs. Great customer service!

XTC 6"x9" Speaker Baffles
Matt from Tallahassee, FL on 4/22/2007
Like most people have said, these things killed my bass; they didn't even tighten up the midrange in my case. I took them out and the sound quality improved incredibly. Aside from the sound issues, the baffles kept getting pulled down by the speaker wires and eventually half the baffle would end up hanging down into my trunk. Unless you have a extremely moisture prone area for your speakers, these are not worth the money. Even if you need to moisture protection, I would recommend finding a better location for the speakers, or spending a few extra dollars and get some new weatherstripping, as these don't seal out moisture completly anyways.

Get the bigger size!
Ben from Great Falls, MT on 7/7/2006
Here's my reasoning for rating this slim version so low: The smaller size (with less space between the back of the speaker and back of the baffle) can have some unwanted effects depending on the speaker enclosed and its size. In my case, the cone movement of the speaker would cause the baffle to suck in and rattle against the back of the speaker. I ended up having to cut out the back of the baffle to fix this problem. On a positive note, the general theory behind these seems sound enough. They are of decent quality and would provide adequate protection for speakers (especially those mounted in doors). The seal around the speaker is also pretty good considering the vacuum that was created in my case (resulting in the unfortunate rattle). I've seen first hand what can happen to an unprotected speaker in a car door. For my sound setup in a previous car, one of the door speakers eventually sounded distorted so I pulled off the door panel to take a look. Sure enough, corrosion had built up where the wire connected to the speaker. After a thorough cleaning, the speaker sounded fine again. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend the regular size baffle and not this slim version to avoid the issues I've had, especially for deeper speakers.

80hz Killers
Rotz from Bridgeport, CT on 3/29/2006
Good quality product. If you're using your 6x9s as your main source of low end bass then i would stay away from these. They kill pretty much everything below 70-75hz. However if you're looking for something to tighten up your 80-150hz range then these are the way to go.

Bad Idea!
Jose Jr. from NJ on 3/9/2006
These 6x9 baffles are good if you only want to extend the life of your speaker by a little. It protects it from moisture and anything else at the back of the speaker. But thats about it. I thought these baffles would improve bass like the other comments said but they didn't. What it did for my great 6x9 kenwoods was restrict airflow from the back of the speaker. So when the speakers would hit low notes it would suck in the baffles like a paper bag. The 6x9 speakers weren't hitting like I thought they should so I took the baffles off and Vuala! It was like night and day. I rather sacrifice a little moisture gettting to my speakers than some nice bass.

Good Idea!
Dave from Raleigh, NC on 1/12/2006
Baffles are probably the smartest thing for your stereo! With the space behind the speaker, (open), it doesnt have anything for the bass to reverb off of. If you put these baffles behind your speakers, it protects them and adds greater handling of bass and noise.
