Great unit with minimal compromise
Jesus from Ann Arbor, MI on 7/5/2023
2003 Mazda Miata
Summary: Overall, this unit is the best fix in terms of usability, easy of installation, and price. It only has a couple issues that keep it from being perfect/five stars, such as the connection sounds and lack of multi-port usability. I will note that the unit does result in loss of CD functionality. I decided not to put this in the con list, mainly because it varies from person to person. So many of us lament the inability to not use a CD anymore, but few of us actually use CDs. Maybe give yourself an honest answer whether or not you actually use CDs, or if you just like the idea of being able to use CDs and complain about how "kids these days don't know the struggle of making mix CDs". If you actually use CDs, then more power to you, and don't buy this unit. This is a great little piece that serves a great purpose at either keeping the car looking stock, or as a temporary fix before overhauling the entire Bose audio system. One more thing I will add that is neither a pro/con, is regarding the magnetic mount that comes with the unit. Miata owners already know that any kind of vent clip device holder is pretty much useless. However, a different vehicle could likely make better use of the clip.
Pros: 1. Truly plug and play. No issues with installation. Just remove the radio, plug in the unit into the cd changer plug (which is exposed), and connect with your phone whichever method you prefer. All methods are easy to connect, including blue tooth. 2. Long cord. I just hid the unit in the back, but for a miata, you have plenty cord. 3. Using the CD input greatly increases sound quality over an FM transmitter. Any improvement is appreciated with the mediocre Bose system.
Cons: 1. The inputs are only able to be used one at a time. You cannot charge one device and use bluetooth with another. 2. The device at absolute MAX volume, notifies you that the phone is connected. This happens every time the car starts, or if you change input. It is frankly annoying and unnecessary. The work around is to set your phone volume to max, so you can keep the car volume somewhat lower. That way you dont get absolutely ear blasted in the morning when you turn the car on.

I love this product!!!
Matthew from Highland Park, IL on 7/3/2023

So glad I found this interface!! Relatively easy install. Adds modern functionality to an almost 20 year old factory stereo. No bulky adapters. A must have if you want Bluetooth functionality for a stock radio in a NB Miata. Adds a USB port for charging too!! Definitely would recommend!!!
Pros: - Relatively low cost for all of the functionality it provides. - Very clean integration with the stock radio. -No visible cords or bulky adapters.
Cons: - Wish I could still use the built in CD player. (A small price to be pay for seem less Bluetooth integration in an older factory head unit.)

Mazda MPV Owners Can Easily Go Hands Free
Marc from Roswell, GA on 5/29/2023
2004 Mazda MPV
Easily add wireless Bluetooth to an older Mazda MPV's stock head unit with CD. It really is plug and play. Thankfully, the Mazda radio is not difficult to access and just about anyone can do this job in under an hour. The only snag for me was where to locate the USB charging cord for the phone.
Pros: Inexpensive, easy installation, hands free calling, Bluetooth playback, compact
Cons: None.

Miata 2004's Bose system offers an extraordinary sound but since I couldn't stream my Spotify, it wasn't really practical. With the addition of the Crux module, I can stream from my iPhone and charge it. The sound is perfect!
Pros: Easy installation, keeps the original appearance

Perfect Solution for Me
Jonathan from Naperville, IL on 5/2/2022
2002 Mazda Miata
The first unit was defective and Crutchfield sent me a replacement immediately. Their customer service is top notch. This unit works perfectly! It gives me Bluetooth, USB charging and an Aux input in the factory head unit. I wanted to preserve the look of the interior and not replace the original head unit. This plugs in with ease and overrides the CD player. Exactly what I was looking for and a very affordable way of getting the features I wanted without replacing the entire stereo.

Sounds good, syncs well but.
Damon from Tulsa, OK on 1/30/2022
2005 Mazda Miata
Factory Bose head unit in a 2005 Mazdaspeed Miata. Installation information was helpful. I already had experience & tools for the head unit removal as well. Syncs quickly with my iPhone 7 however all track selection must be done on the phone itself. ( the Bose head unit recognizes the MZ1 as "EX1" and not "CD1" as per the Manuel ) Haven't tried the usb or aux inputs but was mainly hoping for Bluetooth connectivity and decent audio quality and the unit is fine on those two points.
Pros: Easy install with right tools Quick BT connection and decent sound quality
Cons: No track selection via Bose head unit

Cons: doesn't come with part to remove radio, so make sure to buy that separately for easy installation.

First off, I'm very grateful that this product exists. I love being able to keep the look of the stock radio (plus its unique functions like tailored EQ and speed-sensitive volume, among others), but play music through newer sources. The good: +It pairs up to my phone pretty quickly. Not quite as fast as maybe the latest 2020 models, but I think it's about on-par with the pairing speed in my 2016 Acura. +Installs easy. Plus, the bit of extra cable gave me some choices where to place the device. I ended up keeping it in the glove compartment. +I like that it allows me the choice to play Bluetooth, Line In, and USB sticks. Honestly, what more do you really need? The bad: -The audio from Bluetooth crackles pretty often. Almost sounds like a vinyl record. Since I'm using this in a convertible (Miata), these sound artifacts tend to get drowned out by the rest of the noise. But if I was driving in a car with a quieter cabin, I think it would drive me nuts. -The USB stick player functionality is verrrry barebones. I understand that Crux is probably limited in terms of how the device reads button presses from the head unit, but honestly it just feels like a guessing game. Sometimes I press "disc" and it goes to the next folder. Or maybe I press "random" and it goes to the next folder. Or maybe sometimes it goes to the next track (can't find a way to get to the previous track). Plus, it only seems to be able to handle up to 6 folders

Great unit
Crutchfield customer from Everson, WA on 2/20/2020
2005 Mazda 3
So far it has done everything I have wanted it to do. The only reason it is not 5 stars is that when i play spotify off my phone via bluetooth through the car the stereo controls or wheel controls work to switch it to the next song which was a bit of a disappointment. I figured it most likely work if it was plugged in to the usb. I had a different unit to this one before and my favorite thing about this one is that it shuts off when the car does. My last one would stay connected and annoyed me when you would try to connect to something else in the house or just on your phone. But over all very good product

Imperfect solution
Crutchfield customer from Mount Vernon, WA on 7/16/2019
2002 Mazda Miata
Installs easily but operation is clunky because Bluetooth pairing constantly restarts when the radio is turned off and on. And it works only with line-level input, not USB with my iPhone SE. Pretty big shortcomings for something so simple.
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: Frustrating operation

Installation was simple and only required pulling out the radio and plugging in the device. Usually connects immediately but occasionally takes a minute or two. Not a big fan of the voice that says it's connected. It also cuts out, it doesn't happen often and it usually only does it once or twice but it happens
Pros: Easy to install Just works
Cons: Weird robot lady voice Sometimes cuts out

Great for basic Bluetooth connection, but left features to be desired
Josh from Beavercreek, OH on 8/8/2017
2006 Mazda 3
Installation was pretty simple, but unfortunately the line-in options (usb and audio) require the device to have the cable directly plugged in to activate the source, making it not possible to use extension cables. This required a glovebox mounting, where the input ports would be accessible. Also, a hole had to be carefully drilled in the glovebox to allow the cable connector to fit. Routing was the biggest challenge. Luckily, the Bluetooth function was the primary need anyway, so if you don't care about the other line-in options, I'd recommend just plugging it in and leave it hidden behind the factory stereo. One other issue was that the track skip buttons on the factory stereo (or steering wheel) did not allow track skipping (using my son's iPhone - we didn't try an Android device to see if it behaved any differently).

Received unit with the tools to remove the head unit in my Miata. Very easy to just plug into the back and reassemble eveything. It lives in my glove box. Once installed it worked immediately and sounds great. It's hard to believe it's not plugged in. Syncs up automatically everytime I start my car. Worth the money. I appreciated the extra vent mount for my phone.
Pros: Easy to set up. Works well.
Cons: None
