I bought this camera 3-4 years ago. Happy with the camera. Image is fine. But like many others have noted, after a few years the plastic tailgate handle broke and stopped working the tailgate latches . It is an easy fix to buy a metal handle with metal actuators. Got mine on Amazon for around $35. Then switched out the Crux plastic tailgate handle for the metal one. Crux should address this issue as this is an easy fix. With the metal handle in, the latch actuators are now metal. Should never break again.

Cheap plastic randomly broke and left me locked out of my truck bed. It was a relatively straightforward install but the product is so cheap that it cannot be trusted to work when you need it to.
Pros: Easy install. Decent camera quality
Cons: Disappointing durability.

Like a camera from 1999
John from Minneapolis, MN on 1/19/2025
2016 Ford F-350
Image is sooo grainy for a camera purchased in 2025. Like embarrassingly bad. Also, the image comes with parking lines and no way to turned them off. Which sucks because they aren't aligned to the vehicle and the deck that was installed has lines that can be adjusted. So now you have two sets of lines on the display, one aligned and one just off completely. I wouldn't recommend this. Find a better solution.
Pros: Looks good installed
Cons: Awful image. Has parking lines that aren't aligned to anything.

Decent Camera, Flimsy Construction
Dan from Longbranch, WA on 9/25/2024
I bought this product about three years ago, and I could tell immediately out of the box that the quality of the plastic was significantly lower than the OEM handle I was replacing. Well, three years later, the arm that actuates the tailgate latch mechanism snapped off. Crux doesn't offer any replacement parts, but they will sell you an entire replacement unit for a discount. I have since gone back to an OEM handle, and I plan to replace this camera with the logo version (CFD-03E) which has no moving parts to break. At least the camera had a decent picture.
Pros: Decent quality camera Nice wide view
Cons: Cheap plastic that doesn't last

Poor Quality
Crutchfield customer from OMAHA, NE on 8/14/2024
Installed the product 2 years ago and it worked on and off. View quality was not great. I went to check the ground and the bolt for the handle broke off. Noticed that the seal it comes with doesn't keep any water out so I have a lot of rust in my tailgate.
Pros: Worked ok when it worked.
Cons: Difficult to install. Not much direction on what to do unless you watch YouTube or Crutchfield videos.

So Disappointed!
Dwaine from Enid, OK on 7/8/2024
2011 Ford F-150 XLT
I should have checked the specs... and plastic handle. I am very unhappy with this purchase; now it is too late to return it. I couldn't install it for a bit after I purchased it. The angle (160) isn't as much as I would have wanted. The 480 Resolution is just terrible. Now, it only sends a signal to my head unit about 25% of the time. The handle is plastic, and I fear I will break it every time I open the tailgate. I'm just so unhappy. I've wasted my money. Disappointed (and not telling my wife I lost my investment). :-)
Pros: Looks great.
Cons: The field of view is too narrow. The picture quality is not good. Only sends a picture to the head unit about 25% of the time. The handle is plastic and feels like it will break whenever I open the tailgate.

Worked well for 4 years, then a mechanical failure
Crutchfield customer from FAYETTEVILLE, AR on 5/28/2024
2011 Ford F-150 XLT
I bought it in 2020. It worked well until recently when the little plastic arm that engages the tailgate latch mechanism failed. It left me unable to open my tailgate without taking it apart. The camera still works well, but I have to replace the thing because of the failure. I'm going to go back to a OEM tailgate handle and use a license plate mounted camera instead. If you buy this, pay special attention to the adjustment of the latch mechanism. I might have been able to avoid the failure with better adjustment. I just dropped it in and never messed with it.
Pros: camera is still going strong.
Cons: cheap plastic arm may fail on you. Pay attention to the adjustment of the latch inside the tailgate.

Plastic broke just past warranty

The part lasted just over the warranty period and then the plastic broke on the handle when I opened the tailgate. No problem I thought, replace handles are available for cheap. Wrong. The camera in this unit is glued in. If the handle breaks then you can to replace the entire camera. Would not recommend this product based on that. Pick something with parts available.
Pros: Camera still works
Cons: Doesn't matter because the rest is now garbage

Great for trucks
Daniel from Guadalupe, CA on 2/26/2024
2006 Ford F-150
Quality is great given the truck is 18 years old. It was suggested over the license plate style so that you can see especially if you're towing, etc. One thing I noticed was that only one side of the handle had a plastic nipple to "lock" in the handle. I verified with Crutchfield's tech support and ended up just tightening the handle and lining the handle. It didn't move once tightened. I connected the backup camera to a boss unit and definitely prefer the unit guidelines over the Crux ones (cut the white wire). Instructions are a little confusing but basically if you install power for the camera through your taillight, you don't need the green wire. That's the route I went and then the head unit needed wiring too. Definitely recommend upgrading your reverse lights to have proper lighting at night on the camera as well.
Pros: OEM look Good view Updates older trucks
Cons: Install can be challenging Instructions are a little confusing Handle doesn't lock in exactly like OEM

Broke after year and a half
Nicolle from VANCOUVER, WA on 2/21/2024
2007 Ford F-150
Plastic piece that activates the metal lever to open the tailgate broke after only a year and six months. Entire latch assembly is much flimsier than the original ford tailgate latch. Keep in mind that my truck only sees light usage and is stored in my garage out of the elements, so this really should have held up better. Gave it two stars because at least the camera worked good until the latch failed.
Pros: Good camera
Cons: Flimsy plastic doesn't hold up.

Crux 04-08 F150 tailgate handle backup camera
Vincent from Simi Valley, CA on 2/4/2023
2004 Ford F-150
Very nice backup camera for 04-08 f150. Wires are nicely protected with a 2amp inline fuse and the tailgate camera blends right in with the oem door & tailgate handles. The picture from the camera is very nice crisp and clear both day and night and i would a absolutely recommend it to any 04-08 f150 owner with an aftermarket deck. The install was simple enough and you can get it done in about an hour start to finish. I ended up running it with 1/4" wire loom for some added protection(not included). I ran both cables from the backup camera through the tailgate under the truck to the passenger floor from out to inside through one of the floor body plugs then up to the deck with one set where i hooked that end up then used the other cable to the fusebox on passenger side where i posi tapped my reverse wire(green with yellow stripe) at the fuse box.
Pros: Very simple to install, easy instructions, matches OEM tailgate handle closely and it works flawlessly, great product
Cons: I have not found any cons yet, its a really nice simple install and functions exactly as it should!

The cable was pretty difficult to run through the tailgate, but it was totally worth it. It would have been better, if there was a separate connector at the camera, as well. Once that was run, however, the video quality is pretty decent and it works great. It blends in well and looks much better than a camera on a license plate. Additionally, you can just barely see the hitch, so it's perfect for hooking up a trailer.

So, here goes. I installed this latch to install a back-up camera to my 2013 SuperCrew. It is the 6.5ft bed version so it's pretty long. Be aware the length of the wiring to whichever head unit you use. Do not waste in inch. I followed the original wiring harness and ran it through the steering wheel boot. There is a nub on the boot you can cut off to run it in. Just enough length so be advised if you have a longbed. Installation and use is super easy and cam is clear. Now the not so good: Feels cheap. It is very, to me, light duty plastic and not up to the job. This the only reason for two stars. I installed this item along with a head unit one year ago. The plastic handle that presses the release lever for the tailgate release latches broke off almost to the day purchased. I'm glad my tonneau cover was open when the latch failed. I had liked this item. Fit,form, and function was great. Installation was easy. I think I have to purchase another though. I do not know of another combo latch and cam on the market like this and the wiring is already installed. Crutchfield has been good to me since before internet and will continue to have my support. I hope this was bad unit and the next will be better. This next time I hope to leave five stars.
Pros: Ease of installation, good cam, and Crutchfield customer service.
Cons: Failed quickly

Good camera overall. The loom wasn't long enough to fully cover all of the wires. As others have said, the handle latch seems weaker than the OEM. The camera is also not centered like the factory one, so there is a bit of offset when backing in that needs to be considered.

Bought this because when I bought my 2006 Ford F-150, it had a crappy wireless backup camera with a separate display that worked maybe 10% of the time. Figured I could try a camera that mounts higher up so I can see better. I'm always having to move boats around at work. So this camera has made my life easier at work. Overall quality is excellent. Handle is clean, well made and sturdy. Camera is mounted and secured into the handle nicely. Nice clean picture without having to squint to see some smaller details. The long cable length is perfect for me. It was not short by any means and it wasn't too long. Got the perfect amount bundle in the dash. Excellent job Crux. Keep it up.

#1. I purchased this item because the wiring harness Crutchfield supplied for the radio that I purchased *DOES NOT* tap into the original factory Back-Up Camera that came with the truck. The original factory back up camera is located in the FORD emblem on the tailgate. My 2009 F150's factory backup camera displays in the Rear View Mirror. The new head unit that I installed had backup & front camera input. So unless I wanted to trial and error the wires coming out of the bottom of the tailgate (and Crutchfield did not have the schematic to that), I decided to get this handle with the camera built in. #2. Yes, now I have 3 camera views in my 2009 F150. Head unit Front/Rear & the Mirror Back Up Camera still works. #3. First thing I did was to change out the boring flat black handle on this unit and install my original CHROME handle from my original Tailgate handle. Much nicer finish & kept the rich look of the truck an d it was pretty easy. #4. The camera on this handle displays the back up image correctly on the Radio. In other words, it does NOT make the image flipped when you put the vehicle in reverse. Some aftermarket back up / front cameras have a "wire" that you cut to flip/reverse/correct the image. This unit does NOT have that wire because it does not need it. I call this out here because when I asked, my first Crutchfield advisor was...um...let's just leave it as "unsure of the answer." 41 characters left...Camera quality O
Pros: Gave me a camera to connect to my head unit. Has wire loop to cut if you want to get rid of the back up "guide lines" Able to tap my Reverse Light for power. Use real ground (not back up lights) as you may run into "ground loop" issues & possible "hyper-flash". Thanks F150 Forum. Cable long enough to reach from tailgate, 5 1/2 foot bed into cab & connect to video in & reverse trigger wire on head unit. 61 characters left, I 'm done.
Cons: Running wire thru tailgate out the bottom hole was fun. Use a coat hanger & be patient. Plastic finish is flat black. Not sure if that is a CON unless your truck finish is black gloss like mine. Camera angle is NOT adjustable unless you want to melt the GLUE holding the camera in the handle and reposition it. Included instructions are bare bones basic & it really depends on the Crutchfield advisor that you get when you call in to answer the questions you may have. Made across the

This camera was pretty easy to install and has a good clear picture both day and night. The handle itself is pretty good quality, feels like heavy plastic, about as good as original equipment. I used the included gasket for a more secure fit to the tailgate. Almost the entire cable line into the cab is protected in good quality wire loom, and has several extra feet to accommodate longer trucks. There is a coupler toward the camera end so you can disconnect it if you want to remove your tailgate. As far as wiring goes, I attached the ground wire in the back, but not the red power wire. A lot of people like to power these reverse cameras off of the reverse tail light, but then the camera is only powered when you're in reverse. With my Sony head unit I have an option to see the camera at any time, not just when I'm reversing, but for this to work the camera needs to be on switched power any time the truck is running. So I attached the red wire coming out of the yellow rca plug end of the cable to the red 12v acc lead of my head unit wiring harness. Then I ran a wire from the reverse signal wire of my head unit over to tap a reverse wire going into the fuse box behind the passenger side kick panel. Works perfectly. I can pull up the camera on demand (while parked, even while driving/towing I guess), or putting truck in reverse instantly displays the camera on my head unit as expected.

The camera was pretty easy to install on my 2008 F-150 and I'm very happy with the results. I was concerned about how to get the video cable into the cab but after pulling up the door sill plate I saw a 3/4" hole under the area where the driver's left heel rests. It was originally covered with tape but it had worn of so I had water penetration. I had a 3/4" diameter rubber grommet that perfectly and I sealed the gap around the cable with silicone. I had at least 6 feet of video cable that I coiled up beneath the steering wheel area. For power, I tapped into the reverse light in my left tail light. I felt this was easier than trying to tap into the big bundle near driver's kick panel, especially since I had a hip replacement 2 weeks prior. I then connected the short red wire near the male end of video cable to the camera power wire in my custom receiver harness.
Pros: Easy install Very good display Video cable protected with wire loom

Works very well...easy-ish to install. Instructions on how to get the RCA video feed into the cab was not clear...instructions said to simply get it there (basically) One would think for an application specifically for a particular vehicle, there would be more specific instructions. I can understand why others state that the plastic feels ever so slightly cheaper than the stock. It does. But not a deal breaker. Installed and works fine. Reviews were folks state that they broke the handle...well you need to clean up and lube up the tailgate mechanisms. If you have to yank so hard on the handle that you break it...well that is another problem. Camera integrated with my Kenwood Radio flawlessly. Changing to reverse instantly triggers the color camera. Clear and wide angle is great. Even at night i was impressed.

2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Super clear and wide view. Video looks factory like. Handle looks like a factory Ford handle. I didn't want some bobo looking camera by my tag so this was awesome and looked like the truck came that way. Great for backing up trailers. Wiring was super easy. Bolted right in with no issues.
Pros: Easy to wire/install, factory look, great video quality, good price.
Cons: Nothing!

Product itself is great and provides amazing view. However, the install instructions were lacking. The install of the handle/camera was very easy, straight forward, and looks like a stick accessory. The install instructions stated only one end of the power wire needed to be connected. I was doing the install on the weekend so it took a little trouble shooting, but was able to figure it out. Over all I am very happy with this product and would recommend it.

works fine and looks good but the handle broke after approx 6 months of usage. The internal mechanism of the handle is a soft plastic and it broke just opening the tailgate. many thanks to the great Crutchfield team in supporting me with this - sent me a new one right away. Hopefully my issues were just with the 1 unit and not a product wide issue.
Pros: appearance camera fit
Cons: cheap plastic materials not OEM quality

F-150 back up camera door handle
Omar from Chester, VA on 3/19/2020
2014 Ford F-150 XLT
Bought a few back up cameras for my other vehicles didn't like the placement. Bought this one to have a more stock look. The placement is good. But as far visibility and clarity not so great. Needs a light to help clarify when backing up at night or during rainy days. The handle seems a bit more fragile than the OE handle.
Pros: It looks stock.
Cons: Doesn't provide clear video at night or during rain needs additional lights to make it easier to see.

The installation instructions were less than ideal. The camera was connected to a aftermarket radio purchased from Crutchfield. It would have been much easier if specie installation instructions were available.

Cons: Poor wiring instructions and camera would not operate on reverse light wire on aftermarket radio. Camera has to be turned on manually.

Great factory look, works perfect
Robert from Puyallup, WA on 6/28/2019
2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
Super happy with this camera. I installed it in a 2008 Ford Sport Trac which this site does not recognize as a fit but research told me it would and it does. Love the factory look, and with a little adjustment of the gate release rods it works flawlessly. So glad I did not opt for a license plate mounted camera. Others complain about this camera angle being too low, I do not agree. I can see way behind the vehicle in a very clear image. This camera has the backup line image option turned on as a default. After installation, paired with a Pioneer AVH 1550NEX, I find that the head unit has built in and adjustable lines that are better than the camera default. I now need to do a bit of disassembly to get back in and disable (clip the little white wire) the built in lines.
Pros: Factory look and feel. Fits 2008 Ford Sport Trac

I ordered this with the Pioneer MVH-1400NEX Digital Multimedia Receiver, iDatalink HRN-RR-FO1 Install Harness select Ford models, iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR Universal Radio Replacement & SWI, and some installation tools. With the help of the Crutchfield support crew I was able to pretty easily install all of this gear and its monstrous cable bunches. I considered using one of the license plate units, but opted of the OEM tailgate unit because I live in Maine and the snow would cover a lower unit. I wanted this for hooking up trailers mainly and it is perfect for this. It is helpful for backing but is more down facing than other cameras so that you can hitch up. It works perfectly and has a good quality of picture. I wired it to Come on only when I put the truck in reverse and it just takes over the screen automatically when you engage the shifter. Very cool and keeps me from wanting to spend $70,000.00 on a new F250. ??

It functions as advertised and intergrated easily with the new kenwood head unit. The camera quality is grainy on the 7 inch screen and the angle is a little low. Glare from the sun is any issue also. The handle material is not the same quality as the OEM handle, seems to be less glass fiber reinforcing or possibly even none.
Pros: Easy integration with head unit

Pros: Integrates well into tailgate of truck.

Marvin from Washington, IL on 12/12/2017

The picture with a Pioneer AVH-291BT is good. Visibility to the bumper and hitch is excellent. I damaged the RCA connector and had to splice on a different one. The camera wire is not a co-axial wire like most sound or camera cables. Made the splice to a co-axial cable with a gold plated RCA connector from a headphone splitter. The picture is still good even with a splice in the cable.
Pros: good picture, looks factory, good picture at night

Nice Rear-View Camera
Lou from Scottsdale, AZ on 4/23/2017
2007 Ford F-150
I added this camera to a Pioneer AVH-X2800BS on my wife's 2007 Ford F-150. The install instructions were okay but I'm glad I was able to call Crutchfield for technical assistance. The hardest part was finding the reverse "hot" wire to tap into at the back of the truck. I first had to find which color wire was the "reverse." I decided to follow the wires from the back passenger tail light by taking the lens off the light. Be careful not to make the mistake I did and accidentally tap into the brake light. Make sure when you have somebody putting the gear in reverse to take the foot off the brake for a second while you use a volt meter, standing out of the way, to find the correct wire. On the this truck is was the black/purple wire. Once I found it, I tapped the red lead into it, grounded the black wire and ran the yellow rca jack to the back of the deck. Taking out the factory tailgate handle was easier than I anticipated. Once the new handle was in place I wrapped the wire in a loom and ran them under the bed of the truck and tapped into the cab by popping out a rubber grommet that was underneath the floor sills. My wife love's the camera, especially the backup lines that helps guide the driver in reverse. She also mentioned that the camera has a wide view so she can see if anyone is near the back of the truck when backing up. This in itself is a plus. Thanks to Crutchfield's team of Mick on ordering and Oakley for install assistance. They were great throughout
Pros: Nice display with backup lines. Wide view display which was a nice added bonus. Crutchfield's awesome staff!

Decent Camera, Cheap Handle
Crutchfield customer from Arizona on 11/20/2015
2005 Ford F-150
The camera works great, it sure simplifies hooking up to trailers without a spotter. The handle on the other hand is cheaply built and broke within a month of use. I used JB Weld to fix it and limp it along for a few months but it's not a permanent fix. It's broken again and I'll be getting an OEM handle that I'll punch a hole in and hopefully be able to keep the camera from this broken handle.
Pros: Decent back-up camera.
Cons: Cheap tailgate handle.

Works Great
warpedscout from Mississippi on 11/8/2015
2006 Ford F-150
Prior to installing I had to call the manufacturer with questions about two small white wires that were not mentioned in the documentation. Was told that the white wires are related to the guide lines on the camera. They ship them with the guide lines on, so if you receive it with the wires cut or not cut the lines will be on. If you do not want the lines on you either attach the wires or cut them depending on how the product ships. Installation was pretty easy, bolted right in and the lock on the tailgate works better. Wired through existing holes and ran the wire in plastic shielding to protect it. When wiring the reverse light, the black/purple wire on F150 is hot, run the ground wire to chassis. I tried to run the ground to the taillight ground and would not work. Zip tied the wire along the frame until I came to a loom and cut the boot to run into truck inside of driver's side door and up through dash. Once I had everything installed it worked like a charm. It is off centered but I knew it would be, can see a good distance behind me and still see hitch. Overall, so far so good. Hope I never had to replace this!
Pros: Easy to install, good picture, no glare issues.
Cons: Instructions do not cover the guide line wires or detailed info on best way to hook up to reverse light.

The first camera we ordered didn't work right. Crutchfield sent a replacent and it worked like a champ. Video quality is as good as any backup cam I've seen and it was easy to wire and hookup.
Pros: Great video, factory look
Cons: Instructions were for older model

Best upgrade I've made to my truck.

2014 Ford F-150 STX
I've made a lot of upgrades to my 2014 F150 since I bought it, and this is the best one yet. Ford's mirrors are too small on this truck, but that no longer matters now that I have this camera back there. I can see behind me really clearly now and no longer have to worry about backing into things that I can't see.
Pros: Crystal-clear picture, guide lines, easy install.
Cons: The instructions that came with it suck, but Crutchfield's tech support was awesome, as always.

Back-up Camera
AK from Florida on 6/15/2015
2006 Ford F-150
I had this camera installed on my husband's F-150 pick-up truck. It is working like a charm. The only issue we had was that it was showing us a mirror image and that was an easy fix, it was just a setting in the stereo we had to change. He really likes it because it helps him to back the boat onto the boat ramp. I would recommend this item to others.
Pros: Shows distance lines and is a clear picture.
Cons: Make sure you switch view in your stereo. Not perfectly centered, but good enough.

Great product

Item works as described, is offset due to being on the side of the handle but no big deal. Camera is very clear with a great picture. Has red yellow and green lines to show how close you are to an object I've measured and the green mark is around five feet. I will probably add a led light that can be turned on to aid in the dark. I did not install the product I paid best buy to do it so I cannot comment on the install. Very happy with the product.

Great OEM-style Camera

2007 Ford F-150
This camera is great. I installed it on my 2007 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew Cab with a 6.5 ft bed. Needless to say the truck is very long and the camera is all but necessary for safely backing up. Camera is very clear in both day and night, and in both sunny and cloudy conditions. I installed the camera in tandem with a new Pioneer AVH-X2700BS DVD Receiver with a 6.1 inch touchscreen display. If you properly wire up the camera with your receiver (as long as your receiver has the proper lead to run from your reverse light to let the receiver know when you're backing up) your receiver will automatically switch over to the camera view when you shift into reverse without the need to manually turn it on every time. I have had no problems with sunlight affecting the clarity, and as far as I can tell the camera view is indeed centered. It even looks like it is built at a slight angle to show a centered view. **For anyone who doesn't know, the included composite video cable has a red wire built into it. This is supposed to be connected to the positive lead of your back up light, and the other end is supposed to go into your audio receivers "Reverse Signal Indicator" wire that is included in the wire harness. This tells your receiver that the vehicle is in reverse and allows it to automatically switch to the camera view if your receiver possesses that capability.**
Pros: Great clarity in all conditions (obviously raindrops can cause minor clarity issues). Works great with my aftermarket audio receiver and when wired properly automatically switches when shifted into reverse. The green, yellow & red indicator lines are also very helpful and seem to be spot-on.
Cons: No installation instructions are included, which will cause someone who doesn't have the proper knowledge to not be able to install properly. Since the device is made for a specific series of F-150 trucks, simple instructions should be included. Also, the included composite video cable was not long enough to reach all the way to my receiver. Had to get a female-female coupler and add more cable. Not a major issue.

CFD-03F Rear View Camera
Crutchfield customer from Dover, Florida on 1/8/2015
2004 Ford F-150
Camera has a clear picture when in shadowed conditions. Sunlight has an effect on clarity between trailer ball and hitch. You have to go to menu, then camera to turn camera on. It would be better if the camera turned on when vehicle is shifted into reverse. Camera has a good view when backing up for safety concerns. Camera is not centered, but provides adequate view when in reverse.
Pros: Good clarity in shadowed conditions. Good view when backing up in parking lot or driveway for safety concerns. Good viewing area when in reverse.
Cons: Clarity affected by sunlight. Camera is not centered. You have to go to menu, then camera to turn camera on.
