High-performance design

Wharfedale's EVO4 lineup uses technology and design elements developed for the company's flagship Elysian line. The 4.4 features an advanced folded ribbon tweeter that produces silky-smooth high frequencies, plus a dedicated 2" soft-dome midrange driver. Two 6-1/2" woven Kevlar woofers offer thrilling bass response down to 40 Hz. The drivers are housed in a curved bass-reflex cabinet that's carefully designed with internal bracing to damp sound-muddying vibrations.

Product Research

Features

AMT (Air Motion Transformer) Transducer: The Wharfedale EVO 4.4 floorstanding loudspeaker employs a specially engineered 1.1875" x 2.375" AMT (Air Motion Transformer) transducer for its proprietary, silky smooth high frequency reproduction. By design, the AMT allows for a higher volume of air to be moved during performance than with a conventional soft dome tweeter. This higher-pressure action, encouraged by the principles of AMT design, offers an improved point-source HF reproduction with lower distortion properties than conventional tweeters. This is evident in the stunning and sheer clarity of the musical performance of the EVO 4.4 floorstanding loudspeaker.

Soft-Dome Midrange: The Wharfedale EVO 4.4 features a 3-way driver design and incorporates a 2" soft-dome midrange to go along with its AMT high-frequency transducer and Kevlar cone woofer. The 2" soft-dome midrange driver delivers precise and detailed midrange reproduction with a wide dispersion and open soundstage.

Dual Kevlar Woofers: Articulate and accurate bass is perfected by the EVO 4.4's two bi-directional weaved Kevlar cone 6.5" woofers. Kevlar is a material that is naturally self-damping to reduce and distribute resonances to virtually negligible levels. In addition, a fixed, profiled phase plug ensures smooth acoustic roll off, further aiding integration with the loudspeaker's AMT high-frequency transducer and soft-dome midrange driver.

Optimized Crossover Network: The output of the tweeter, midrange and and woofers is carefully combined by a thoroughly researched crossover developed using Wharfedale's Computer Aided Optimization technology. Each crossover is carefully evaluated using a wide range of music, with the emphasis being on the lifelike reproduction of voices and instruments in addition to the dynamics of the musical performance.

Purpose-Built Cabinet Design: The Wharfedale EVO 4.4's cabinet is purpose-designed from the ground up to ensure sonic character and great looking aesthetics. The cabinet is constructed of high quality materials and composites with internal damping and bracing. The curved design of the cabinet accurately disperses sound from the drivers into your listening room and prevents standing waves inside the enclosure which can color and muddy the sound. The cabinet is available in a black, white, and walnut wood-grain finish. It comes with an acoustically transparent cloth grille that magnetically attaches to the front of the speaker cabinet.

Slot-Loaded Distributed Port Design: The EVO 4.4 utilizes a slot-loaded distributed port design, where the internal port tube opens into a slot formed between the speaker cabinet and the plinth. This reduces the turbulence and audible "chuffing" suffered by conventional ported systems, which is caused by the sudden out-rush of high-pressure air into the low pressure in the room. A further benefit is the increased efficiency of energy transfer from the bass reflex tuning to the room. Both ends of the port feature a semi-parabolic entry and exit curve that control airflow through the port tube and allow increased air volume in the slot-loaded system for further improvement in the loudspeaker's low-frequency output performance.

Dual Binding Posts: The EVO 4.4 floorstanding speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumper-plates. The binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, & banana plugs (single only). Using these dual binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. Bi-wiring or bi-amping the speaker provides improved bass & treble performance.

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.

Note: If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

Applications: The Wharfedale EVO 4.4 floorstanding loudspeaker is a great choice for 2ch stereo music listening, as well as home theater enjoyment.

  • 2Ch Stereo Placement: The EVO 4.4 can be utilized in a 2ch stereo music application. Try to position the loudspeakers equidistant (6.5' to 13') from one another and the main listening position. The speakers should be "toed" or angled (15° to 40°) into the main listening position.
  • Home Theater Placement: The EVO 4.4 can be used as front and/or surround speakers in a home theater application. When used as front speakers, they should be placed equal distant on either side of the television screen (6.5' to 13' apart). The front speakers should be angled (22° to 30°) slightly so they are aimed towards the main listening position. When used as surround speakers, they should be placed behind the main listening position at an angle (135° to 150°) or to the side of the main listening position at an angle (90° to 110°).

Spike Feet & Isolation Pucks: The Wharfedale EVO 4.4 floorstanding loudspeaker features pre-installed outrigger feet and spikes for carpet installations. Isolation pucks with foam padding are included to protect your hardwood, tile, laminate, and vinyl flooring. The spike feet can be placed directly on carpet or set in the isolation pucks to protect hardwood, tile, and laminate, and vinyl flooring. The isolation pucks add approximately 0.25" to the overall height of the speaker.

  • The loudspeakers should be positioned 6.5' to 13' apart and create an equilateral triangle with the main listening position. The speakers should also be "toed" or angled (15° to 40°) into the main listening position.
  • Position the speakers at least 7.875" from the rear walls and 2.25' from the side walls. Bass extension will increase with the speakers positioned closer to the wall, but this may also cause the bass to sound too boomy or indistinct.
  • If the loudspeakers are placed away from the walls, the inward angle may be increased by up to 40%, although this may restrict the width of the optimum listening position.

Note: The Wharfedale EVO 4.4 floorstanding loudspeaker should always be used with the outrigger feet and spikes installed (do not remove) for optimum sound performance and maximum stability. Make sure to use the isolation pucks to protect your hardwood, tile, and laminate, and vinyl floors.

EVO4 Series: Following the concept of the best-selling EVO series from Wharfedale that came before it, the EVO4 fuses the EVO concept of great sound and beautiful aesthetics with trickle down technology from the new flagship Wharfedale ELYSIAN series. From the cabinet design to the materials employed in its distinct driver design, the EVO4 sounds and looks amazing. The EVO4 Series consists of two floorstanding loudspeakers (EVO 4.4 / EVO 4.3), two bookshelf loudspeakers (EVO 4.2 / EVO 4.1), one center-channel loudspeaker (EVO 4.C), and one surround loudspeaker (EVO 4.S).

Q
Would these speakers pair well with a Marantz MM7025 2-channel amp? Not sure if they have compatible impedance requirements.

A
Good question. You could absolutely use those Wharfedale Evo 4 tower speakers and they would sound wonderful with that Marantz power amp.

Q
Can anyone paired these Evo 4.4 with tube amp?

I returned my set of Evo speakers. I don't see why you couldn't pair them with any amp.
langston  Dec 10, 2021

I used my prima Luna tube amp. Sound was decent for the price, especially with movies/TV, but was not happy with audio listening. Lacked good mid range and the dynamics I was looking for. I returned them.
glenn  Dec 10, 2021
A
I have not but it will sound better than a class d amp that I use. Treble may be a little more but I find the amt less harsh than a horn or dome tweeter. You will not regret your purchase if you like English sounding speakers. I moved from b&w 7 series to this and love it. Added a svs sub and it's music made in heaven for the cost you pay. Give it some time to break in

How well pairs Wharfdale Evo 4.4 with Harman/Kardon hk3490?
jovan  Dec 27, 2020

I searched that amp up online. It appears to have 120watts per channel. My amp is 100 watts per channel. I get very deep bass and great mids and treble. There is always the factor of personal preference and other parameters that are important, of course.

Q
Trying to decide between 4.3 and 4.4. Is there a big difference in sound? Also, this will be going in a larger room with vaulted ceilings so there is a concern that the 4.3 may be too small.

4.4 are great for a large area. We love ours. I would suggest breaking them in. Good luck
georgina  Jan 25, 2022
A
I've not heard the 4.3's, but reviews suggest the sound is similar. Sound of the 4.4's is amazing to my ears. Specs are also relatively close. The bigger cabinet should translate to a bigger sound with more bass extension. Height where you sit is an important consideration. Sound dispersion isn't fussy side-to-side, but vertically it's definitely best nearest ear level. Center of the 4.4 tweeter is 39" from the floor. Looks like that height for the 4.3's is about 32". You probably need a small stand to get the 4.3's just right.
don  Jan 25, 2022
A
I had the same concern. I called Crutchfield and worked through the audio forums. I am more than happy with the 4.4's. These shine in a larger room. I absolutely love them. I would constantly wonder about the larger version if I settled on the 4.3's. The other thing is the woofer diameter is exaggerated so the 4.4 is more like a 5.5" or 6" rather than 6.5" with the speaker surround. Still the bass is substantial and the bottom port makes placement easy (near walls).
joshua  Jan 25, 2022
A
I have the 4.4s in a big room with cathedral ceilings. I think the added base with the 4.4s is needed. Also, because of the porting at the base of the speakers, placement is important. BTW, I also have the new KLH 5s. They are heavily hyped, unlistanable.
stephen  Jan 25, 2022
A
my room is 19'x17', 9' ceiling high, 4.4 is perfectly matching the room.
qian  Jan 25, 2022
A
I'm afraid you're right. The 4.3s may be too small. Then again that depends upon how you like to listen to music. I can't compare the 2 but I love the balance and neutrality of the 4.4s in my medium sized living room with a vaulted ceiling. I have them paired with 2 SVS SB 2000 subwoofers for the room shaking lower frequencies that you're not going to quite get with either the 4.3s or the 4.4s.
azikiwe  Jan 25, 2022
A
I was leaning towards the 4.3s but then I went for the 4.4s which are now residing in in a great room with vaulted ceilings and loft area, they fill the entire area with wonderful sound throughout plenty of bass and a wonderful mid and high end thanks to the fantastic tweets

Q
Can the base (4 Outrigger feet & spikes) be removed? If so, what is the height of the speaker without these? Also, will that affect the sound quality? I have a 40" height limit because of the location. Thanks.
todd  Jan 07, 2022
5 answers
A
I measure just under 39.5" without the base. Surely the base can be removed but I didn't want to flip mine over to see how it is attached. I would not recommend taking the base off. A great amount of vibration is reduced by the design of the base with the spikes going thru the carpet and into the plywood underneath. Maybe you could achieve isolation with a half inch thick rubber pad instead. If it were me, I would go for the next size smaller EVO's instead.
matthew  Jan 08, 2022
A
The spikes are adjustable for proper sound projection to the listening area..they are removable and the speaker height would be 40.5 inches. They do come with a nice spacer/ washer with a rubber bottom and a indent on the top for the speaker spikes. Which works great on wood floors. These are awesome sounding speakers and removing the spikes may negatively affect the experience.
lynn  Jan 07, 2022
A
Yes, the spikes can be removed. It does not effect the sound. The height of the speaker without spikes is 40 3/4". Great speakers if you can make it fit.
karl  Jan 07, 2022
A
The spikes are easily removed. I can't say if it will affect sound quality, but they will still stand 40.5"
steve  Jan 07, 2022
A
I believe that you to have to install the base and spikes, but those are designed to isolate the speaker from the floor and improve the sound, plus it adds stability. You might want to look at other speakers, such as the Elac Reference DR52s, which I think sound better.

Q
How do these Evo 4.4s compare to the Klipsch RF 7IIIs?
michael  Dec 19, 2021
5 answers
A
Hi Michael, Not sure that I can help here since I haven't heard the RF-7 III's in person. I have the Evo 4.4's and the matching center hooked up to a Marantz SR5009. I think they could really use an external amp to get the most out of them, but I haven't jumped into that yet. With the power that I have, they have a very clean and detailed sound... and they get loud enough for my room. My favorite aspect is how natural they sound. They are not fatiguing in the higher volumes either. The bass extension is actually really nice for the driver size, but I am also running a sub and have the low frequency cut from the Evos... so that's somewhat irrelevant. I am always drawn to the ribbon style tweeters, which is what helped lead me to the Evo. Soft dome tweeters can often times work for me, but I always have a hard time enjoying metal dome tweeters. The finish on the Evos is excellent. Very nice looking with the grill on or off... the size and shape really work in my room. Larger / boxier cabinets wouldn't look right in my situation. Looking at the specs on the RF-7 III's, I would imagine that they could get louder and most likely put out more low-end bass... but that is only speculation based on the specs. You might need to be more careful with the placement of the RF-7 due to the rear ports (the Evo is ported at the base of the cabinet). I have listened to a lot of different music and watched a ton of movies on the Evos. The only time I haven't been impressed is when a buddy asked me to play some Metallica. Granted it was early on when I was doing my initial setup and my sub wasn't in the right location... but they didn't impress me with that style of music. I feel like (with my previous experiences listening to Klipsch speakers) that Klipsch could perform better with that. Like I said, not sure that I can help... Both speakers have great reviews, so it's a win-win. Good luck and enjoy!
jeremy  Dec 20, 2021
A
I'm very happy with the Evo 4.4's. Klipsch are also great speakers, but a very different sound signature. The RF7iii's will give you greater scale and dynamics. They're designed to replicate the sound of a big concert. (in spirit at least). They're somewhat aggressive with a forward high-end. They'll fill a big room with full-range sound and sound full at low volume too. Wharfedales are more refined and much less efficient. Both are well balanced, but the Evos have a warmer silky sound with a little more emphasis on midrange. High end is definitely present, but not in your face. Your ears need to be near the level of the tweeter to appreciate the AMT though. If you spend a lot of time listening while standing or dancing, Klipsch are likely a better choice. You can enjoy sitting and listening to the Evos for hours at a time at medium volume and not feel fatigued. RF7's sound is more present than the Evos at low volume, but the aggressive highs might still wear on you. Evo's bass is full and tight down to about 45 Hz. For deep bass, you'll need a subwoofer. RF7 bass is full and punchy down to nearly 30 Hz. Which is best for you is definitely a matter of taste, type of music you listen to, and size of your room. Evos are really great for jazz ensembles, acoustic, intimate vocals, and music with a lot of detail (e.g. Tool). RF7's would be my choice for straight-ahead rock, energetic big bands, and orchestral music. If I had the space and budget, I'd go for both.
don  Dec 20, 2021
A
I don't know but I'm very happy with Evo 4.4's and they are half the price of RF 111's.

Hi there. Absolutely love these speakers. Have them powered by a carver M500t retro amp. Only have played vinyl so far. but the depth and detail of the sound is amazing.
david  Dec 19, 2021

I can't offer a comparison, but these speakers are awesome. I will say that I personally like more bass, so I got the 10 inch Polk subwoofer which completes the package perfectly.

Q
Compared to Kef R5, which is better? No matter the price difference
jack996  Mar 30, 2021
4 answers
A
"Better" really depends on your preferred sound signature. The R5's are very detailed and neutral. To me, the highs are harsh and fatiguing. The Evos are also very detailed, but on the warm side with a little emphasis on midrange. Highs on the Evo's are definitely present, but the AMT tweeter and silk midrange are smooth (and silky). You can listen to the Evo's for hours at a time at medium volume and not feel at all fatigued.
don  Dec 20, 2021
A
These are superior speakers,, but in comparison to the Ref R5, I wouldn't know. So sorry. Good luck.
georgina  Apr 29, 2021
A
I don't think you will find a direct comparison because I don't think people would buy one and then the other at least not many people. The Evo however will be smoother and more relaxed sounding. But do not get confused It is not dull or rolled off. The Tweeter on the Evo is a masterpiece in my opinion. The mids are perfect for me in the base is extremely respectable not boomy But has a sense of authority without getting anywhere near the mid range . You would be hard for us to do better under $3,000 I've heard many of those speakers including high end kef the kef are a little more neutral slightly more sparkle on the highs but honestly not much It just feels that way. It may have more bass as well.

Q
Will these match well with the Cambridge CXA81? Also, will the sound fill well a room with the size of 22x8 with 7 feet high ceiling?
wilfredo  Feb 24, 2021
1 answer
A
That's the amp I use with the Evo 4.4's. They're a great match if you're going for a detailed but warm sound. The 4.4's would probably overpower that space. The 4.2's might be a better choice for your narrow room.
don  Dec 20, 2021
Q
How do these compare with Def Tech BP8060ST?
lyle  Feb 23, 2021
2 answers
A
I've never owned or listened to Def Techs extensively so I can't really compare them. From what I know about Def Techs I would imagine they're more efficient than the EVO4.4. Personally I like my EVOs. They're balanced, neutral and have a generally sweet sound. They're not particularly prominent in the bottom octaves but the bass is tight. I have subwoofers working with mine but I sometimes like listening to them without the boost.
azikiwe  Feb 24, 2021
A
I don't recall the models i listened to but that price range is right. I was surprised at how good they were; wide, dynamic soundstage, the sweet spot was also wide and much more forgiving of placement and seating position. Probably better for a great AV setup, but 2 channel would still be very good. The Warefedales just seemed to convey more detail, the bass is shockingly good, the high end was collected, not harsh or sibilant, as I feared. But they need good room placement and size and are better for more critical listening, more revealing of lower quality recordings.
joshua  Feb 24, 2021
Q
How stable are these speakers? For example, if a large dog were to bump into or lean on one would it tip over? Can anyone speak to how easy (or difficult) they are to topple?
jonas  Jan 13, 2021
5 answers
A
If I had a large dog or young kids around these speakers, I would be nervous. Front to back, they're very stable. A modest shove from the side near the top would knock them over though.
don  Dec 20, 2021
A
Should not be a problem; stable, heavy, low-ish center of gravity and wide enough footprint that knocking one over would be a challenge (but not impossible). It's certainly more stable than I would have guessed from pictures and video reviews.
joshua  Jan 13, 2021
A
Hello Jonas, These speakers are very large! I have a 75lb dog and if he had hit a speaker directly I'm confident it would topple. This is one of the many reasons I returned these Wharfedale's. Additionally, please look at Monitor Audio Silver 300's. They are significantly smaller, better enclosure structure, more stable, and most importantly sound better. Hope this helps!
tim  Jan 13, 2021

Q
Comparison between EVO4.4 vs B&W 603 Anniv Ed? Any opinion?
james  Dec 30, 2020
1 answer
A
I listened to the 603's (not the anniversary version) and was not stoked with the midrange. Now, this could have been the room, source components, or quality of the music file but the midrange dominated the speaker and came off a little harsh. By comparison, equivalently priced Definitive Tech and Martin Logans sounded better. I have the Evo 4.4's and am in love. Midrange is buttery smooth and accurate (only honest gripe would be higher register female vocals with low quality recordings can appear sibilant). The AMT tweeter is not harsh, one of my biggest concerns.

Q
What wattage do these speakers come on? I mean to sound realistic and reproduce detailed sounds, do the speakers have to be turned up in volume>
charles  Nov 17, 2020
1 answer
A
They have average efficiency at 89db. As to what wattage they come on? Not sure what that means. A 50w-200w amp would be fine. The sound is amazing even at lower levels. Detail is pronounced and not fatiguin.I think it's the unique character of a done mid and ribbon "AMT" tweeter. If you need a low volume and detailed speaker that's efficient try a look at the Klipsch line such as Heresy.

My 80 watt per channel NAD has no problem driving these speakers. The Azur 851 would be able to bring out low end even better. I find these speakers to be very well balanced, outstanding in the mid-range, and in my room the separation is incredible with a slight toe-in, I hear the music, not the speakers. I do not regret buying them.

Your Cambridge amplifier will be more than enough to drive these speakers.

Q
Are open box speakers used? If not, are they in perfect condition with full warranty. Thanks

If they were used, they were so very gently. they have been tested, are in new condition, and come with full return policy and full warranties. Sometimes they were opened by accident or for in house research purposes.

Q
For the Wharfedale Evo 4.4 the manual says nominal impedance is 6Ohms but the Crutchfield spec says 8 Ohms and then somewhere else I saw "8 Ohm compatible. What is the real impedance? Can I use it safely with an 8 ohm rated amp? At the moment I may use a Denon AVR C1600H amp. Thinking of upgrading since it is only 80W. Would it be adequate for the Evo 4.4? Can I use the Evo 4.4 as the main front channel speakers and other 8 ohm speakers for the surround rear channels. I am really considering buying the Evos but hesitant because of the above concerns

The Evo 4.4's are rated at 8 Ohm per the manual. Based on my set up, I think 80 watts is plenty to drive these speakers. They are surprisingly efficient. You really can't go wrong with these beauties.

Alex - The Evo 4.4's as far as I remember are rated 8 Ohms. Here is my setup which sounds wonderful to me: Marantz SR7013 two Evo 4.4's up front and center. I use some older but still great Polk Monitor's I believe 30's at surround, and a 12" Klipsch Sub. You'll want to keep considering upgrading your amp but to me you'll be fine for a good while. Remember - only you have to be please with your decisions.

Can I pair these with an Onkyo TX-8511 receiver?

Your receiver is 100w per channel ("100 watts x 2 (stereo) into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.08% THD") and is more than enough to thoroughly enjoy these speakers, even at high volumes. 89db is an average efficiency, certainly not inefficient. I would also counter that these have plenty of bass, surprisingly so. Check some of the reviews on youtube from "KVR."

I would say yes if you're not looking for room shaking volume. 30 watts RMS per channel is the lowest recommendation for these speakers. The Onkyo TX-8511 is 50 watts RMS per channel. The Evos aren't the most efficient speakers and they don't put out the deepest bass but they're clean, accurate and neutral.
