Bring powerful bass and colorful lighting to your boat

On land or sea, a quality subwoofer is a must if you're serious about sound. Rockford Fosgate designed their M1D2-8 marine subwoofer to bring booming bass to your boat, along with versatile RGB LED lighting to give you looks to match their great sound.

Made for life on the water

This M1 Series M1D2-8 8" sub features a rugged, removable grille that looks great and stands up to blistering sunlight and damaging moisture. Underneath the UV-stable shell and durable Santoprene rubber surround, you'll find a injection-moulded mineral-filled polypropylene cone that's treated with UV inhibitors, plus a moisture- and tear-resistant synthetic fibre blend spider.

Switchable impedance

The 2-position VersaSwitch™ lets you set up the sub for 1-ohm or 4-ohm impedance with a simple flip of the switch. Rockford Fosgate's corrosion-resistant, spring-loaded push terminals and flexible, insulated silicone lead wire will stand up to the elements, whether you're on open water or tied up at the marina. This Element Ready™ sub won't miss a beat — and neither will you.

Light up the night

The sub also features Rockford Fosgate's Colour Optix™ RGB LED lighting system to give you bright, colorful lighting that accents your boat's interior. The lighting can be programmed for a variety of special lighting effects via the PMX-RGB lighting controller (sold separately) and smartphone app or with their dedicated extension cables.

Maximum versatility

Powerful enough for bass-heavy music, the M1D2-8 is a great choice for anyone who's building a serious marine audio system and wants to make a colorful impression.

Product Research

Features

Marine Tested: Rockford Fosgate uses industry standard tests (ASTM B117 salt/fog and ASTM G154 UV) to ensure the M1D2-8 subwoofers are durable in the difficult marine environment.

Impedance Switch: A switch on the input terminal allows you to easily change the subwoofer's impedance between 1Ω and 4Ω, internally changing between wiring the dual 2Ω voice coils in parallel and in series. (The connected amplifier should be off when changing the impedance.) The power handling is the same for either setting; 150 watts RMS/600 watts peak.

LEDs: There are red, green, and blue LEDs on the back of the grille to create a glow on the woofer cone. The LEDs can be powered individually, or in any combination you like. Depending on what combination of LED wires is connected, they light red, green, blue, yellow, pink, aqua, or white. A 12 volt power supply is needed to turn the LEDs on and a 1-amp fuse should be added in-line (fuse not included). The LEDs can also be controlled using Rockford Fosgate's LED Controller (item number 575PMXRGB, sold separately). An LED power wire harness is included with a 4-pin waterproof Deutsch DT Series connector that plugs into the subwoofer frame.

Speaker Terminals: In addition to standard male quick slide terminals, the subwoofer also has a 2-pin waterproof Deutsch terminal. A speaker wire harness with a 2-pin waterproof Deutsch DT Series connector is not included.

VAST Surround: The Vertical Attach Surround Technique (VAST) increases a speaker's effective radiating cone area without increasing the size of the basket.

Klippel Verified: The Klippel distortion analyzer, a device that uses a laser and sophisticated software to do large-scale analysis of drivers in motion, lets Rockford Fosgate optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Stainless Steel: The mounting hardware is stainless steel to resist corrosion.

Enclosure/Free-Air: The sub can be mounted in a sealed or ported box, or in an infinite-baffle (free-air) application. The optimum internal volume of a sealed enclosure is 0.55 ft³; from 0.4 to 0.75 ft³ is acceptable. The 0.55 ft³ enclosure yields a -3dB point of 47.7 Hz. The best ported enclosure volume is 1.1 ft³ using one 3" diameter x 9.4" long port; this yields a tuning frequency of 45 Hz and a -3dB point of 34.7 Hz. Infinite-baffle mounting yields a -3dB point of 42.7 Hz.

Q
I'm confused about the ohm rating. My amp is switchable 2 or 4 ohm. Which of these settings would work best?

Are the parallel/series diagrams in the manual correct? Something doesn't seem right.

A
Yes, they are correct. I verified with a my multimeter. For my particular wiring application I had the switches on 4 ohms then wired the subs in parallel for 2 ohms resistance at my amp

How much does this speaker weigh?

A
We don't have the weight of that subwoofer measured and it is not listed in the manual.

Q
I'm not amp savvy so can you run this without a amp?
simon  Apr 05, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings Simon. Thank you for your question. A stereo alone will not have enough power to run this subwoofer. Stereos are designed to run 4 speakers with around 20 watts going to each. Subwoofers need more power than that, and under powering subwoofers lead to a blown subwoofer. You will need an amplifier.
