Finally it has Ultra High Definition 24/196 audio through the Onkyo app. Before we were stuck with DTS Play-Fi that would stop at 4 seconds at the start of a song.
Pros: Full 24/196 Amazon Music
Cons: DTS Play-Fi wasted 2 years of my time!

Optimistic
Brian Lee from Warren, PA on 1/12/2025
I am replacing an older Onkyo model with this one. I dont need most of whats offered with this receiver. I watch movies and tv, but I do have 9 speakers and a sub. Initial set was sasy. Follow the on screen instructions, download the app and the way we go. The issue with the Dirac app is when you are done. No finish or exit tab. When you exit it automatically goes to start a new calibration. Im hoping everything was savwd. The first night was good. The second night, it was automatically starting the subwoofer and wasn't sending a signal to the tv for on screen instructions. Took a little bit but got it going again. No idea how though. I like it, but really wish a receiver was made that was plug and play. Hoping for the best.
Pros: Easy initial setup
Cons: Too many options

Onkyo NR-7100 Great AVR
Steve from Big Lake, MN on 12/9/2024
My prior AVR was a Yamaha and I've been a Yamaha guy for years. True a new Yamaha and was a little disappointed so I looked at the Onkyo NR-7100. The difference blew me away. It was like night and day performance. Even prior to the room correction calibration being run, I found the Onkyo driving my speakers with minimal effort and bringing them to life as they were intended. The set up was also very easy and the flexibility in settings far outweighs what the Yamaha provided. I wished I would have liked at it sooner.
Pros: Adjustable crossovers from AVR DIRAC Live Larger power supply than others delivers better performance
Cons: Sometimes the app connection is finicky.

My Marantz SR-6011 had been deteriorating for some time, and finally died (that's the third one to die prematurely over the years - no more Marantz for me), and thankfully Crutchfield came along literally the next day with a Special Buy price on this Onkyo, so I sprung for it. Also ordered an HDMI 2.1 cable along with it, to ensure best connection between Onkyo and my Panasonic HD BluRay. Decided later to also upgrade the HDMI's between 1) AVR and TV, and 2) AVR and DirecTV HD receiver - bought them locally. After hooking things up, strange behavior ensued, then much troubleshooting. Decided to go back to my previous two HDMI cables, and that fixed it, so lesson learned - buy from Crutchfield! :-) So why not 5 stars? Discovered that the Zone 2 audio feed assign can only be set to one of the first 3 inputs - but not "PC". I regularly listen to music via my PC/server that's in my home theater room, and feed it to Zone 2 via RCA connections to other receivers in the house, for "poor man's whole home audio". Got around that limitation by reassigning / connecting my PC HDMI to "Game" instead - will just have to remember to select that input when I want to use that feature. Crutchfield's awesome on-line support (on a Sunday!) helped me figure that out - thanks, guys. Other than that minor limitation, I'm very happy with the Onkyo - great sound, and it was easy to configure.

Sounds Awesome and Great Features
Bruce from DULUTH, MN on 6/28/2024
I received my Onkyo TX-NR7100 on May 1, 2024. I initially set it up as a 5.1 sound system and I wasn't disappointed. I reshuffled things and added some speakers and set it up as a 5.1.4 and I'm amazed at Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the "3D dome of sound" when playing an Atmos movie disc, all I can say is wow. The 2-channel sound from CD's is awesome, I tried listening to it in Dolby Surround and I was blown away. This is an excellent AV receiver and Dirac Live is a game changer by optimizing your speakers to your room. Dirac Live made my OK sounding room sound awesome!

Great Bang for your Buck!!!
Jason from Birmingham, AL on 4/23/2024
This TX-NR7100 is part of a nice 5.1 setup (Canton Speakers all around + Hsu Subwoofer). After researching, it was clear I wanted a system that I could use Dirac Live Room Correction with as my room has windows across the backwall (Not good for a media room, but...). I was surprised that Dirac would have to be purchased separately w/ several "higher end" AVR's, while several Onkyo's (incl. this one) had it included for free. As "someday" I may go to 7.1 or 7.2, this AVR had all the connectivity I would need. Connecting the AVR was the standard process, although I did take the opportunity to upgrade HDMI cables w/ Crutchfield brand. Streaming music, concerts and movies out of the box PRIOR TO Dirac calibration was "good." Surprised by how much difference the wattage increase made (previous AVR was 100W/Ch.). Then the test: Dirac Live calibration. The calibration took some time as currently there is a Dirac software bug and I had to load an older version to take accurate measurements. That said, I got through it & completed all 17 measurements (used the recommended miniDSP UMIK-1 microphone - sold sep.). And....WOW - just WOW!!! What a difference!!! It was like I didn't just upgrade the AVR, but the whole system. Sound is more precise than I had ever heard it and the size of the soundstage (Think AirPods Spacial Audio on Steroids!) has unbelievable depth of space! Streamed Dune 2 and Talking Heads Stop Making Sense for real world test and KNEW I made the right call!
Pros: Price/Value Dirac Live (a MUST) Very precise sound Video is beautiful Plenty of Power to drive a 5.1 setup to your pain threshold Up to 8k/60 HDMI
Cons: Onkyo's Menu format isn't the great Dirac software but (Not Onkyo's fault)

Love / Hate relationship with this thing
Steven from Lafayette, LA on 4/4/2024
10 years ago, I had an Onkyo that really impressed me. Sound quality was amazing and the clarity was unmatched. Unfortunately, it died prematurely (about a year old), so I replaced it with a Pioneer Elite & was never really happy with sound afterwards. I recently upgraded my entire home theater and that old 5.2 Pioneer workhorse was retired. I decided to give Onkyo another shot with the TX-NR7100. On screen set up was super easy, and there was that clarity I had been missing for years! Sounded amazing! 10 minutes later, I was questioning my return to Onkyo. Receiver started cutting out audio & video. Every 5 minutes or so: blank screen, no sound. Lasts 10-15 seconds each time. Swapped inputs, swapped HDMI cables, swapped DVD players, made no difference. Called Crutchfield and had a new one few days later (great service). Set it up and 10 minutes later, same problem. Put a big box fan blowing straight into the receiver until the metal was cold to touch, just in case it was overheating... no difference. Google search shows that I'm not alone with this issue. I decided not to return this one and rerouted all video signal to the TV. Only running audio through the receiver now. I love the clarity of dialog that Onkyo has, and I don't want to lose that. I will say the bass is not what it should be, nowhere near as good as the Pioneer. Also, I have to crank the volume to 80% for normal listening sound levels. This is the third strike, so next time I'll go with a different brand.
Pros: Incredible Dialog Clarity Easy On-Screen Set Up Excellent Hi and Mid Levels
Cons: Problematic video signal dropping Have to run volume at 80% for normal listening Bass levels leave a lot to be desired

Better than Expected
Max from JACKSONVILLE, FL on 3/21/2024
I upgraded my older Yamaha Aventage receiver to this Onkyo. I honestly wasn't prepared for the significant performance boost that occurred. Everything is better, more dynamic, better detail, wider sound stage, more musical with my Klipsch speakers, and overall power seems improved. My surround performance has never sounded as good as this.. I am even surprised at small sonic details that envelop the rear sound-field. I am using all 9 channels in an Atmos set-up, and am greatly pleased with this receiver. It does take getting used to it coming from many years of owning two very nice Yamaha's, but I do believe this is a genuine winner for a modern home theater.
Pros: Dynamics Detail Power Improved Sound stage Nice Mid-range Warm high's Punchy Bottom GUI is pretty nice
Cons: Remote control needs a backlight Dialogue performance is somewhat muted (but there is options for correction)

Disappointing performance
Ryan from Richmond, UT on 3/5/2024
I purchased this to replace a Sony STR-DB830 that sadly lost the front two channels. This old Sony has been a work horse and has been amazing. Sad to see it go. Have always heard great things about Onkyo products, so decided to step into modern technology with the Onkyo TX-NR7100 because it was on an amazing deal. It was on sale for only $50.00 more than the TX-NR6100 and added vertical surround capability. After getting it all set up, I turned it on and was disappointed to say the least. While simple to setup and configure, the sound quality and volume left a lot to be desired. My old Sony would blow you away at a 3 out of 10 on the volume setting with only 90 Watts per channel. This Onkyo requires you to set it to a 60 out of 100 to get to a moderate listening level with 100 Watts per channel. I use the movie Top Gun as my surround sound system test media and my old Sony provided clear surround staging that really made you feel like the jets were flying overhead and around you. This Onkyo does not sound much better than a sound bar under a TV. The low end is nearly gone, and staging is completely nonexistent. This unit is THX certified and the volume actually decreases when the jets fly by resulting in a muffled, flat, non-dimensional sound. I like to experience movies with big full sound the immerses the audience. This Onkyo has left me disappointed and thinking about switching out for a Denon AVR-S970H.
Pros: Good price when on sale and 9.2 channel gives you the ability to have multiple zones or vertical surround sound
Cons: Not very powerful for 100 Watts and sound quality for a THX certified device is very disappointing.

Works great, love Dirac Live, wish it had preouts
Bill from Charlottesville, VA on 2/24/2024
This has quite a comprehensive set of features and the price on sale here at Crutchfield was amazing. I recently added Atmos speakers and upgraded my theater project with a 4K Television. The HDMI switching and eARC are working quite well. Plenty of power for 9 speakers (5.1.4), even if the 100W rating is only for 2 channels driven. I switched to this receiver after having some HDMI issues with the more expensive Integra DRX-3.4, which is basically the same receiver (the insides are identical as they are owned by the same parent company). The missing features for me on this Onkyo (relative to the Integra) are the lack of pre-amp outputs and an inability to set default DSP modes by input and data stream type. There are other items missing too, like extra 12V triggers and IR control, but those aren't important to me. The app is identical except for the branding. Airplay and Casting work pretty well, though I don't like the lack control around Zone 2 when using those "NET" inputs, it just seemed inconsistent with how it routed the signals depsite setting it to Zone 2 routing. The Dirac Live integration is great! Skip running it directly from the receiver and instead download the PC/Mac application for a better experience. The app also allows you to use a miniDSP UMIK-2 rather than the provided microphone. Highly recommend!
Pros: 4K/120Hz HDMI switching 9 amplified channels (5.1.4) Zone 2 preamp outputs Component input for older sources No default dsp modes by input/stream
Cons: No preamp outputs No default dsp modes by input/stream 2 sub outputs, but only 1 level control

A Worthy Upgrade
Nathaniel from Troy, OH on 2/21/2024
What a great upgrade! I came from a 2007 Onkyo TX-SR605, which was very limiting after 17 years. Setup for this was simple, I was able to move my existing speakers over, plus my various inputs. After turning it on, I did upgrade the firmware, but initial setup was a breeze, most with helpful on-screen graphics. It walked me through speaker placement (I was worried my high-wall height channels wouldn't have that option - but it did) and the Dirac Live setup - I only did the 3 point configuration, but it didn't take very long at all. I'm currently only using this with a 1080p TV, but 4K is my next upgrade. The receiver has two operating modes - CEC and RCV. CEC is so I can use my Roku or TV remote to power things on/off, adjust volume, etc. RCV seems to disable CEC so you need to use the Onkyo remote to do everything. I haven't explored RCV mode, as I use CEC. I haven't used the remote app much (which you need for Dirac Live), but I didn't initially see a volume option on it. It also offers 3 zones (all of which can be powered if you only do 5.1 for your main zone). I haven't used this yet! Overall, the TX-SR7100 offers an abundance of options - that you don't have to dig into if you don't want to. It handles things excellently out of the box. But for those who like to tweak settings, there's no lack of options for you. The pictures attached are of the new and old receivers (Old one still connected), then the 7100 in pro
Pros: -More than enough inputs -Two HDMI Outputs -All HDMI is 2.1/8k -Dirac Live -Built in Chromecast
Cons: -Pricy, unless you catch it on sale -Controller App seems to lack volume functions at first glance -The built in Chromecast is Audio Only

It just works
Thomas from Snohomish, WA on 2/12/2024
Replaced an old (12+ years) AVR with this one about a month ago. So far, it has worked flawlessly. In the past I had to manually select the amp features I wanted (Dolby Dig, 7 Ch Stereo, others). This one just works without intervention. Radio shows up on all 7 channels without intervention; eARC works perfectly, detects when something turns on and turns itself on. Sounds great. Takes about 2-3 seconds to switch inputs, which seems reasonable to me. I still haven't figured out all the bells/whistles. DIRAC instructions in the (online) manual are not specific as to how to start DIRAC function. It starts automagically when the mic is plugged in and the app is engaged. Took me some time to figure that out, but it works great.

Not a fan.
Daniel from LOS OSOS, CA on 2/9/2024
I would like to preface this by saying I only had this a couple of days so my review isn't very comprehensive but there are some things I'd like to mention for those who would be interested in buying this. The build quality seemed good and the initial set up was easy and straightforward. The menu options seem very limited to me but maybe I hadn't dug around enough. After doing the complete Dirac Live room correction I was left a little underwhelmed by the results. The whole thing sounded a bit flat but I think that's what it's supposed to do. I had to crank the volume up a lot more than my current Sony receiver to find a reasonable listening level but the details did sound a little more precise and defined while watching the racing scene in Ready Player One. The low end was lacking as well. I was willing to give it a chance but suddenly Atmos changed to 2 channel stereo which was playing from the rear speakers. I couldn't figure out how to change it back without doing room correction again. It also does not display the current audio codec on the front display. You have to either check it with the app or press a button on the included remote multiple times. Overall a very mediocre product IMO.
Pros: Huge unit, well built with and exhaust fan. Snappy UI.
Cons: Dirac Live seems overrated. Buggy and too app dependent.

I wish I purchased years ago....
Greg from Auburn, AL on 2/6/2024
I was on the fence about this one and read all the reviews good and bad across the web. I have a Yamaha Aventage comparable AV receiver now but felt it was missing something. I was right! The sound quality is stellar and blows me out of the water. The bass more tight and midrange better for some unknown reason. My wife's biggest complaint no matter how much YPAO or center channel gain I made in Dolby Atmos was lack of understanding and clarity on dialog watching high resolution material. We would constantly have to rewind scene to listen better to try to understand dialog. I thought it was all bad sound techs or defective microphones in Hollywood. Sad to say it was the receiver. Now with Onkyo, I can hear perfectly clear the talking and more impact of all my high level Klipsch speakers. It is like getting a new sound system. I have not yet adjusted extensively with Dirac and only the three step setup upon initial setup, but I will when time allows all 9 points of adjustment. The app is stable on my iPhone and can control the center channel, sub and other things quicker. It is intuitive and can adjust on the fly. I put on Fleetwood Mac "Mirage" album from Apple Music in lossless and Atmos mastered last night to listen to Gypsy by Stevie Nicks. I have heard the same song a thousand times on the same speakers with my Yamaha; however, last night I heard background vocals and instruments in Atmos surround that NEVER heard before using same setup. It blew m

Hopefully Worth It!
Randy from Manson, IA on 2/5/2024
For starters, this receiver is a huge upgrade compared to my last Onkyo by what it offers. It's taking a while to get it dialed in but in time I think it'll be a sweet upgrade. I had to call support to get my subwoofer dialed in but Crutchfield helped with that. The display is bigger than my last one so that's nice. Dirac was a pain trying to get it to calibrate. You must have complete silence. Any noise in the background fails the calibration. It took me 45 minutes or so. My last complaint is the remote. It's cheap compared to my old one and the old one had more options. I'm looking forward to getting my Atmos speakers and adding that element to my system. That'll be the big test since that is why I upgraded. I likely wouldn't have paid the normal price for this so I'm hoping this was a steal!
Pros: Bigger Display Channel options On screen set up 4K/8K
Cons: Remote Setup takes some time

Shrink wrap packaging was great since it was raining when delivered. This unit replaced an Onkyo TX-SR607 which recently froze. Setup was fairly easy although the Blu-Ray HDMI port is bad. Tested with various HDMI cables I had along with swapping other components and the end result seems to be a bad port. Made due by plugging BR into another open HDMI port. Volume of unit seems less than the previous receiver. Ran Dirac a couple of times and saved results, but not sure that it gave the best sound vs what I had before with the old receiver and Audyssey.

Finally getting around to give a simple man's review of this Onkyo! Purchased my 1st Onkyo in 1982 & still going strong.... decided to upgrade my system and move on from my 15 year old Yamaha. I must admit I grew up in the 2 channel days & frankly don't understand most of the technology. A good friend came by yesterday to "fine tune" and I am thrilled with the sound and a lot of the features. Running Klipsch RP-8000FII as mains, Klipsch RP-404C II as center channel, M&K V-75 Mark II 75 watt 12" sub & 1993 DCM Timeframe as rears (I like to be different!) I also run Bose 301 wired to my living room upstairs. Biggest issue I had was figuring out how to activate "Zone B" to run upstairs speakers. We discovered a work around to get them to work: Activate Zone B Menu>Speaker>Configuration>5.1.2 = success! Speakers in both rooms worked like a charm! To turn off upstairs; just went into set up & selected 5.1 I prefer listening to music w/ all channel & switch to 5.1 surround for TV & Movies & Sports. Thanks to my great friend & Crutchfield team for help deciding what to run with!

Cons: The manual sometimes falls short of fully explaining features

Dirac Live bug in current NR7100/RZ50 firmware

Excellent receiver, unfortunately there is a bug in the current NR7100/RZ50 firmware. With a 5.0 or other layouts without subwoofer, the subwoofer signal is sent to the front speakers without Dirac Live correction. That means that a boomy room is corrected in Stereo mode only. Details can be found here: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/built-in-dirac-live-having-an-issue.3291069/ I hope Onkyo can address this issue in a firmware update. New unit so durability TBD. After having 2 Denon theater units die, switched to Onkyo. This 7100 is the second. Operation simplified compared to earlier model Onkyo. Setup reasonably straight forward however did take a few factory resets/unplugging to get all working - but accomplished. Very sensitive to microprocessor/logic glitches as that was what took out both my Denon units. All works great - system powers 3 separate zones including a 5.1 and 2 separate stereo zones, something even significantly more expensive models often cannot do. So - great so far, great deal, we'll see. Been doing business with Crutchfield for at least 20 yrs, tech support et al exceptional - keep it up. I'll be Baaack-
Pros: Great capabilities, good price point, setup/operation simplified vs earlier models
Cons: Did require factory resets/unplugging to finish setup - may indicate finicky microprocessor

I got this to set up multiple zones and play music simultaneously (or play different things in each zone). You can use it in a handful of configurations for 2-3 zones.
Pros: App to control audio for each zone Flexibility to change labels and input/output settings
Cons: App design feels dated and you may need more than one app (depending on setup/use) RCA cables do not work for analog video input, you will need a separate converter/upscaler

So far all is good. Great sound, finally got the 2 zones connected and working. My one complaint is this, the Sonos integration is great, however, you cannot control the volume from the receiver. You have to use the Sonos app. I by passed this by not using the Sonos settings and plugging the Sonos port into the CD input. The receiver is a good all around performer.

IMPRESSIVE!!!
Vincent from Central, CA on 5/25/2023
Basically I am a "Set It and Forget It" Type person. I upgraded to this 9.2 Channel Receiver because we bought a larger house which now accommodates 9 Klipsch Surround Sound Speakers and 2 x 12in. Subwoofers. My older Sony STR-DH790 receiver did not use Dirac Live. My new setup is 5.2.4 and loving it. I have many 4K movie titles with Atmos. The 4K pass through is about a 2 second delay but not a deal breaker. I only use this receiver for watching 4K movies in glorious surround sound. That's it. Setup was pretty basic but I had to call customer support a few times. Very professional and spot on help. No regrets.
Pros: Outstanding Tech Support

I was/am super-impressed with Crutchfield's outstanding support! Unlike most companies, I talked to a real tech within a minute of my call. Not only that, they actually loaned me additional equipment to help troubleshoot an issue. Definitely over and above any normal support where you would order Home Theater equipment on-line. For my medium sized room, with powered front Definitive Tech speakers, the 100 watts per channel (two channels driven) spec of the NR7100 is more than adequate. The Onkyo's sound quality is fantastic....better than my previous experience with a Denon receiver. Also shipped my unit same day as ordered. A+++ company to deal with. Thank You.
Pros: Great sound, and super technical support by Crutchfield techs.

The RZ50's little (very capable) brother
Stephen from West Bloomfield, MI on 5/1/2023
All the goodness of the RZ50 in a smaller less expensive package. I recently upgraded my AVR to a TX-RZ50 which I absolutely love. In a second room of my home - around the same timeframe - my old Denon AVR finally gave up. Being an audiophile that needs to live with a family that doesn't necessarily love my "stuff" all over the house, I needed to fit this new AVR in an existing cabinet. The RZ50 wouldn't fit - but the NR7100 had many of the same specs in a smaller form factor. The sound of the NR7100 matches that of the RZ50 as do all the setup and onscreen menus - which are very easy to navigate. Setup was a breeze and I can't say enough about how much I love DIRAC room correction. It is far better than any other system I've used (Pioneer / Denon) - the sound is phenomenal. Highly recommend the TX-NR7100 if pre-amp outs, price, size of the receiver are a consideration for you. DIRAC onboard for no extra cost makes this a fantastic AVR that I know I'll keep for years.
Pros: Fits easily into existing AV cabinets / DIRAC native / ROON capable / great, clean, clear sound / onscreen menus make setup a breeze / streaming (Tidal) native / iPhone app (remote) works like a charm.
Cons: No cons discovered that weren't acknowledged at time of purchase. It's not as powerful as the RZ50 but I made the choice to purchase thinking I'd return it if it didn't sound like the 50. I'm keeping it!

This unit is outstanding! It's located in my basement movie room and I utilize zone 2 to power my outdoor deck speakers. I had no issues with the onscreen setup and mobile app. I can push Spotify etc to single or multiple zones using the app from anywhere in my house. I called tech support to help my sort out my 5.1 vs 7.1 speaker configuration error and support was excellent.

A crying shame
Drew from Salt Lake City, UT on 4/23/2023
Repeatedly loses signal and incessantly attempts to handshake again, causing pure lunacy, until you turn everything off and restart the signal chain. Will not allow you to choose what is displayed on the actual hardware, so if you prefer it to display the audio codec, you're SOL. Anytime you want to go through the onscreen display options to look at the details of what is coming in and being put out, it forces an unnecessary re-handshake, and makes screen go black temporarily. WHEN you can get it to function and behave properly - *WHEN* you can, which isn't often - it sounds really good, and passes 4K HDR, and/or Dolby Vision video quite well. Sadly, that is extremely scarce with this Receiver. Moreover, even if it did function flawlessly at all times, the fact that you can't choose what is displayed on the hardware is a deal breaker in and of itself. I'm very disappointed. This Receiver checks all my needs boxes at a reasonable price, but in practice, it fails in almost every way. I hate to beat a dead horse, but WHY WOULD ANY RECEIVER NOW ALLOW THE AUDIO CODEC TO BE DISPLAYED??!
Pros: When it behaves like it should, the audio and video are exactly what they should be.
Cons: Quite literally, EVERYTHING else. CANNOT DISPLAY AUDIO CODEC. Only allows input signal to be displayed! Seriously??!?!?

Up to bat for the third time. Will it perform?
Terrill from Leakey, TX on 4/19/2023
I bought this one to replace a well worn-out TX-NR656 that had a bad ethernet port, two bad video switches, and two failing HIDM plugs. I hope this AVR wears better. I'm still converting the Zone A HDMI digital sound out to analog in order to play HDMI audio input to our Zone 2. I love all the inputs and we use them all. Sometime all the sound choices just leave you wondering if you have chosen the best sound or missing some sounds all together as we discovered while watching a CBS awards program one night. We use a 5.1 config with Zone 2 goes to whole-house-audio and our backyard. Zone 3 goes to the kitchen which is an extension of our living-dining room. I look forward to using the voice control features. Set up of the AVR was made easier with the help of Google Home.

Great device but some issues
Ryan from Taylors, SC on 3/27/2023
First impressions are great but there are some cons. Perhaps it's the open box item and is defective? I'm still trying to determine. Net sources pop loudly and the receiver goes into protection mode. Seems like something internal is faulting. Also, Dirac ran one time and I have yet to get it to run again successfully. The receiver shows up in the app but it says no working microphone found and errors out even though the mic is connected. Everything else works great. All component and HDMI sources. Sounds great and has plenty of power and features. I'd like to give more stars but those two issues are a sore point considering I've had the device less than a week.

A good value 9-channel AVR.
Marc from San Diego, CA on 3/10/2023
If you do not need pre-amp outputs, this is the receiver to get for 3D surround! 7.1.2 or 5.1.4 for $1K, yes please. Review done. Okay, here's more details... As of March 2023, it was $600 less than comparable receivers (like its brother Onkyo TX-RZ50) - the big difference being it has no pre-amp outputs and does 9-channel surround processing instead of 11-channel. Music playback is quite good when sent through a digital path like DLNA or Bluetooth, so that the receiver converts to analog internally; it makes effective use of the subwoofer. Through an analog input like CD, music is okay but the low frequencies (that make subs happy) suffer. No screensaver. And all the other stuff on the product page, no need to repeat the specs here. I have to leave off a star because: 1) Bluetooth does not sync with the source. Fine for just audio, but unusable for video. There is a full second or more delay! That's not due to latency in the Bluetooth codec, it's just a bad, lazy implementation. Say, when watching video on a laptop, Bluetooth audio to the receiver. (To be clear, not when playing an input source like Blu-ray, no delay there.) 2) The remote is a bit lame. No universal TV control. No backlight. Volume on the right side (left side volume is pretty standard on remotes). Feels not-so-substantial. See included pic (TV remote on left for comparison). So there's room for improvement. But at this price, still a strong recommendation.
Pros: Excellent value. Music playback sounds good.
Cons: Poor remote. Awful Bluetooth delay.

Best 9.2 Home Theatre System I could find for the price and then it got better with it being on sale at Crutchfield. Also, speaking to Crutchfield staff helped a lot. I love that the I could choose my Klipsch Reference speakers in the setup menu and the system would adjust its frequencies for the best sound and to protect them.
Pros: Great system!
Cons: A little difficult to setup and that is even before working with Dirac Live 3, which I installed onto my laptop (rather than onto my phone). It took a bit of internet searching for decent setup videos. The same goes for Durac Live 3 videos.

Mixed bag
Peter from Evans, GA on 2/20/2023
Sounds great when you're finally listening to something, but getting there is not smooth and navigating around is slow. I spent 40 hrs trying to run Dirac , 3 calls to Crutchfield (they were very knowledgeable, but could not get to the bottom of it) Onkyo's phone system was down for a week, email correspondence with Onkyo was unfruitful. Finally, I received an email from Onkyo saying that Dirac's server was down, a small tidbit that they could've delivered a week earlier and saved me from destroying all my settings on all my equipment that I could get my hands on. I will probably be mentally unstable for the foreseeable future . If you want to listen to headphones on Bluetooth, you must navigate deep into the settings and then navigate back out to listen and then go back in again to turn it off. If you want to use zone 2 good luck knowing where your volume set because it doesn't display anywhere And doesn't display what source you're using on zone 2 either ,it just sort of goes on and on like this as if the software engineers never exactly use the unit themselves, they just make it possible for it to happen, and not in a very happy way. Couldn't they just steal someone from Apple ? The control app is more of the same. My Onkyo from 15 years years ago was easier to navigate, but this one sounds much better. That said 5 stars for Crutchfield
Pros: Crutchfield

Sound is fantastic. Big improvement over my Onkyo TX-NR646 which I loved. Wanted to upgrade to 9.2 speakers and Dirac. Dirac wouldn't work at first. Kept giving me a network connection error. Read similar problem with other owners. Seems to be caused by Onkyo servers. Used the Accueq and that was big improvement over previous versions. After a week tried Dirac again and it worked. Peter from MERRITT ISLAND, FL on 10/7/2022
I bought this AVR in April and was largely happy with the purchase. The sound was good although the network interface and menu was a bit klunky compared to my last AVR. About 2 months ago, I noticed a crackling sound in the left front speaker (like a loose connection). It was intermittent at first but is now there all the time, even with every input disconnected. I have tried swapping out the speaker and speaker cables, but no change. So now I have to send it back under warranty. I am gutted that I spent this much money for something that is now unusable after less than 6 months. It was the first Onkyo product I have purchased and will probably be my last.

Onkyo TX-NR7100 = AWESOME
Jim from Madison NC on 8/11/2022
First let me say Diane was great help when I bought the Onkyo . She took care of my sell fast all while answering my questions. Thanks Diane. The Onkyo receiver works and sounds very good. Better than I expected for the low price I paid. Crutchfield was dead on with their description of this receiver when they said ( looks like they've hit a home run with the TX-NR7100 ). They sure did. The Atmos speakers I added in work wonders for movies. I'm running it as a 7.1.2 and let me say it is just AWESOME ! I was expecting some real movie theater experience and I got it. The WIFI and Bluetooth pick up signal very very good, so streaming music and and controlling it are not an issue. I have not figured out all the bells and whistles on it yet, there are so many. I love music playing through it , not just the movies. This is my first Onkyo product ( always been a Yamaha fan) If the Onkyo last as long as my last Yamaha did I'll be one happy camper.
Pros: Great sound, Great picture going through, easy set up, Looks good, WIFI and Bluetooth work very well , Has tons of settings and use.

Home system recivery
James from Waianae, HI on 7/30/2022
I chose this Onkyo receiver to replace a Sony, and what a difference it made to my home entertainment experience. The Onkyo easily linked my tv, Apple TV, Amazon fire, Blu-ray, spectrum cable box and Bose surround speakers. I can control my viewing and listening now with just the cable remote. The (admittedly aging) Sony receiver would frequently lose its link to all of those elements and the only recourse was to restart the receiver. No more. And thank you, Crutchfield, for the quick delivery to my home in Hawaii.
Pros: Smart Onkyo easily linked all my entertainment elements, including my Bluetooth headphones.
Cons: A bit pricey, but worth it.

Sound Quality
William from Virginia Beach, VA on 7/27/2022
This TX-NR7100 replaced a Integra 50.4 that I've had for the past 10 years. Although it has less power, the Onkyo's sound is comperable to the Integra. I just added Atmos add-on speakers and it made a world of difference. Even without Atmos enabled content, the sound is fuller and more robust. I've only had this receiver for a little more than a week so I haven't explored all the "bells and whistles." This receiver is a good buy solely because of its sound quality. I think I made the right decision in buying the TX-NR7100.

So I've owned 2 Onkyo receivers previously and needed to upgrade to the new 4k-8k technology and went with a Marantz, thinking I was upgrading to a higher tier of quality. Well, big mistake. In a nutshell the movies sounded great but the music, not so much. Returned it (hassle free, thank you Crutchfield) and went back home to this new Onkyo. Oh my! Dirac is impressive!
Crutchfield customer from Fulshear , TX on 12/27/2021
This receiver replaced an old Integra DTR 30.4 and it's a noticeable improvement. The Dirac room correction especially is a step up over the Audyssey 2EQ the old receiver had, where even the simple 3 point calibration produced a very cohesive front stage across my mismatched front and center channels. The audio quality sounds perfectly fine, and the user interface is good, just like every other Onkyo receiver I've used. I initially had an issue with my Vizio PQ65H1 where the receiver output static over HDMI 2.1, but a firmware update fixed that issue quickly. I haven't had the opportunity to test the other killer feature of this receiver, functioning VRR passthrough, but based on other reviews it seems to be working great. A couple of minor complaints net this 4 stars instead of five. IMO it's a bit expensive to not have any main channel pre-outs. Even a front left/right pre-out would be fantastic and potentially allow for 11 channel processing. My other quibble is with the remote. It's a noticeable downgrade over my old receiver's remote with much less affirmative buttons. Overall, it's a great receiver and well worth considering over other receivers in the price bracket.
Pros: Dirac at mainstream pricing 9 channel amplification Working VRR
Cons: Remote is mediocre No pre-outs except subwoofers

Crutchfield customer from Mantua, OH on 12/19/2021
The sound of the NR7100 is fantastic! General installation was reasonably easy for such a piece of equipment. The downloadable manual isn't as clear as it could be, but seems to be complete. This system replaced a very old home theater system, and some of the component settings were in conflict with how the Onkyo worked. That took a few days to work through all of those. It seems like the processor is a little bit slow, judging by how long it takes to switch sources, or respond to changes in settings, like switch from a streaming device to cable TV, but maybe that's the norm on a system with so much more functionality than what it replaced.

When I got this receiver and tried to hook it up to my PC and do 4K120 I wasn't happy. It would not pass from PC to Receiver to TV. The PC passed 4K120 no problem when hooked straight to the TV with the same cables. So the cables didn't seem to be the issue. Emailed Onkyo twice about it asking for help only to get 0 response. Left a bad review about the whole experience as I was not happy that I just spent $1100 specifically for the HDMI 2.1 featureset and it did not work. Crutchfield saw my review and set up a call between me and Onkyo. After working with Onkyo for over an hour on the Phone, we hadn't gotten too far, until I did something by accident and it started working. The fix? The cable going between the TV and the receiver was bad. Despite working when hooked from TV to PC. *Face slap* I confirmed this by going into the hidden Onkyo Menu by holding Tone + pressing Return. To check the HDMI cable, put it into whatever port you're wanting to use on the back and then plug the other end into the Sub out. Then make sure you're on that input. Then press and hold Tone and press return. Navigate down to HDMI diagnosis and press enter, then perform the cable test. It will start with 480P and end at 8K60. I ended up using this to test all my HDMI cables and just the one that was running between my AVR and TV failed. This menu option is extremely helpful and I wish it wasn't buried and hidden. Now as for the receiver itself, I love the sound! Its a definite improvement over my previous TSR-700. The only complaint I have really is the DIRAC was quite fussy to set up. It kept erroring out when it came to trying to set it up. I went with the quick setup and it kept failing, it was either too loud or too quiet. I believe I ended up setting the volume to 30 and the gain in the app to -5 and it finally was able to complete the test.
Pros: Sounds Fantastic!
