About the USA Spec Toyota Bluetooth® Interface

Zak Billmeier
You never leave your phone at home — so why not have some fun with it when you're on the road? Connect USA Spec's BT35-TOY Bluetooth interface, and you can stream tunes and take calls while your phone stays in your pocket — even if you have a premium JBL factory system in your vehicle.

You never leave your phone at home — so why not have some fun with it when you're on the road? Connect USA Spec's BT35-TOY Bluetooth interface, and you can stream tunes and take calls while your phone stays in your pocket — even if you have a premium JBL factory system in your vehicle.

So let's say you're rocking out to streaming tunes and a call comes in. No problem — the BT35-TOY will switch over to phone mode so you can answer the call. It'll even announce the phone number that's calling. And if your radio is off when a call comes in, the interface will actually turn it on so you can talk hands-free.

More details on the USA Spec Toyota Bluetooth® Interface

Product Research

Features

Overview: The USA Spec BT35-TOY is a Bluetooth Phone & Music Interface for select Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles (with or without JBL factory systems). The BT35-TOY lets you add Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless music streaming to your compatible vehicle's factory radio. The USA Spec BT35-TOY includes a hide-away module, external microphone, radio harness, and T-harness.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The BT35-TOY supports Bluetooth Profiles A2DP and AVRCP for wireless audio streaming from a Bluetooth enabled device that can also be controlled from the buttons on your vehicle's factory radio or steering wheel. You can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or stream music apps (such as Pandora, SiriusXM Radio, iHeartRadio, etc.) that are playing on your Bluetooth device to your vehicle's sound system (all speakers will play). You can even skip tracks from your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel controls (other control functions will have to be done from your Bluetooth enabled device). You can control the volume of the music being streamed via your factory radio and steering wheel controls, or the Bluetooth device.

Note: Your Bluetooth enabled device must also support A2DP for audio streaming through your vehicle's sound system and AVRCP to control the Bluetooth device from your vehicle's radio or steering wheel controls.

Hands-Free Communication: The USA Spec BT35-TOY supports Bluetooth Profile HFP for hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, so you can take (answer/end) phone calls through your vehicle's factory radio. Your music will be muted and an audible ringtone will be heard through your vehicle speakers when there is an incoming call. The BT35-TOY will automatically switch to Bluetooth mode when there is an incoming call (even if your factory radio is turned off). The BT35-TOY uses advanced technology to turn your radio on and switch to the correct source to help you never miss a call while driving again. You can even have the BT35-TOY announce the caller's phone number through your sound system; and for most text-capable radios if you miss the announcement, you can view the caller's phone number on your factory radio's display (some text capable radios will only list 8 or 9 digits of the phone number).

Note: You will continue to use your mobile's phone touchscreen or keypad to make calls. The BT35-TOY only allows you to answer/end calls from your factory radio or steering wheel controls. Once you make a call from your mobile phone, you can carry on the conversation hands-free through the included microphone and your vehicle's factory sound system.

External Microphone: The USA Spec BT35-TOY includes an external microphone to carry on your side of the conversation (the caller's voice will be heard through your vehicle's speakers). The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found in many factory or aftermarket head units. The microphone is fitted with a 10' cable terminated by a 3.5mm connector that connects to the BT-35-TOY module. The microphone features an integrated, self-adhesive mounting bracket to mount the mic to your dash or windshield.

Note: The microphone measures 0.625" (w) x 0.8125" (h) x 1.25" (d).

Bluetooth Compatibility: USA Spec is currently working out a list of fully compatible devices. The current list of successfully tested devices include the iPod touch (3rd/4th gen), iPhone (3G/3GS/4/4S/5), iPad (1/2/3), Android G2, Galaxy, HTC MyTouch, Desire, and Sony Ericsson W518a (as of 9/26/2012). You will initially need to pair your Bluetooth device with the BT35-TOY, before operation. The BT35-TOY can pair up to 8 devices, but will only connect to 1 device at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the USA Spec BT35-TOY. Please refer to the USA Spec website for the latest compatibility listings.

Vehicle Compatibility: The USA Spec BT35-TOY is compatible with select 98-2012 Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles with or without JBL factory systems (as of 1/18/2012).

Dip Switches: There are 4 dip switches that will need to be configured to match the make, model, and year of your compatible vehicle.

Installation: The USA Spec BT35-TOY plugs into the back of your Toyota, Lexus, or Scion factory radio. The factory cable gets unplugged from the factory radio and the included T-harness (CAS-TA) takes it place on back of the factory radio. Then the factory cable and the interface harness (CAS-TY35) plugs into the T-harness. The interface harness also plugs into the USA Spec BT35-TOY. Finally, connect the external microphone to the BT35-TOY's mic input and mount the microphone to your dash or windshield.

Note: An additional USA Spec adapter (sold separately) may be required to install the BT35-TOY in some Toyota, Lexus, and Scion vehicles.

USA Spec iPod Interface Compatible: The USA Spec BT35-TOY works with other USA SPEC interfaces, such as the PA15-TOY or PA20-TOY (sold separately). They simply daisy chain together.

Q
Hi can anyone confirm if this kit works on 2005 sienna limited, with factory JBL, Nav, back up camera, and Rear Entertainment System, while retain the steering wheel controls?
randy  Jul 20, 2015

A
Yes, it worked on ours, only you have to have the console on the cd settting to use the blue tooth. The steering wheel controls still work for radio and work for the blue tooth when the cd setting is on. The only thing is you cannot play a dvd and use the the blue tooth at the same time. Also you can no longer play cds once its installed. However, while on the bluetooth setting you can stream music from your phone which we enjoy. Not perfect, but has worked great for our needs. We installed ourselves by watching a you tube video. Took us about 2 hours

I installed this product in a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The install was easy enough as far as plug-and-play, however the sound quality of the Bluetooth connection left something to be desired. The cabled aux input sound quality was substantially better than the Bluetooth sound. The Bluetooth sound quality was very "Tinny" and the depth of music with bass and treble were both sacrificed. If you're buying it for just the hands-free phone operation, I would say go for it. But if it's for music, don't bother.

Randy, I have the same Sienna that you do and I have installed this product in it. Frankly, installation was a breeze and it works great. I would recommend having a look at YouTube for some tips on Sienna installation, but the bottom line is that the main unit is installed in the back right side of the vehicle. The only challenge is that you have to run the microphone cable from the front of the van back to the main unit, but that isn't difficult at all. You will need an extension for the microphone cable, though, and those can be picked up anywhere including Radio Shack. I'm very happy with this setup and bought another one for my Lexus RX300. Good luck with the installation....it's a piece of cake!!

Hello Randy. I installed this device on my 2005 Toyota Tacoma back in 2014 and it worked perfectly. Now, I can listen to Pandora, Stitcher Radio, Tune-In, and any other audio app I have in my smart phone. Crutchfield sent me all the printouts necessary for the installation for my particular car model. However, I also viewed over and over videos posted on YouTube -- I found one for your particular vehicle and model trim. It took me half a day to install it because I have never done anything mechanically and because I did not want to break any small piece of my dashboard mechanisms or incorrectly put the dashboard back in place.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
2005 sienna with JBL, factory nav, back up camera, rear entertainment system, can this device work, and retain my steering wheel control?
randy  Jul 19, 2015

A
The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Does this work in 2003 Prius with navigation and JBL 6 CD player? I could not install Rostra 250-7500-TY3 because the harness did not match with JBL CD player's 12-pin harness. I hop this product will fit.

I have a Sirius Stiletto and used to use the cassette adapter until it stopped working; end of tape sensor is bad. Installed the FM transmitter direct link, but the adapters are mismatched so it never stays connected. Can I use the output of my Sirius and somehow transmit to this thing?
