Sonos Port
William from Melbourne Beach, FL on 3/1/2025
I bought the Sonos Port to play my vinyl records on my Sonos system. I followed the included instructions, and voila! Robbie Robertson's Fallen Angel was playing through my home. I was worried about grounding my MMF 1.5 turntable, but I don't need to worry about that when using the internal phono amplifier. I don't hear any buzzing either. I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
Pros: Easy setup in an existing Sonos system
Cons: Only has one audio input

Sonos drops the ball
Douglas from Wilmington, NC on 10/13/2024
Why is this being g sold with all the software issues? Absolutely a horror show to connect. The ethernet port option STILL has conductivity issues and requires you to use wi-fi to keep a stable connection. Only reason I was able to connect and use the unit was by multiple resets and finally finding a solution in a blog feed! This was after I was forced to by a new Port unit when Sonos killed my original Connect unit with the latest software update. The ONLY reason I kept the unit is that we were familiar with the app....Sonos has really dropped the ball.
Pros: Familiarity with app if you had older unit
Cons: Horror show to connect and ethernet conductivity issues.

Sonos had ruined the product with their app update.
Howard Neal from Joelton on 8/16/2024
For most sonos customers, it has always been the app that made the expensive Sonos hardware( Port and Connect) , worth the price but the latest update to the app (Spring 2024) has removed most of the functionality and user flexibility from the app... I have never seen any company move backwards to such a degree. I have quite a bit invested in their streaming only devices...but none of their expensive amp'd speakers, thank goodness. I have Klipschorns and class A amps and only use the Sonos to access my FLAC files. At this point, if I can switch to another app to play my music, I will use the Sonos products for boat anchors.
Pros: NONE NOW
Cons: Non-funtional app. With a wi-fi enabled reciever you can do what sonos does for free now.

Bad UI, hassle to use among groups
Colton from BOSTON, MA on 8/5/2024
This product has a really poor UI that only lets you access your streaming apps through the Sonos app, so its clunky at best. I'd rather just access Spotify through the actual app. Not to mention a bunch of loops to jump through to set it up (I just want to play music, I don't see why I should need to register an account and have the app ask me for my location, especially when I already have registered an account with my preferred streaming app). I'm using this as an office speaker, and setting it up for multiple people to share is a nightmare; for one thing, only one person can "own" the system and therefore allow more phones to connect to it without yet again jumping through more hoops and set up. Even then, it only connects to the streaming apps of the owner of the system, so I can access my spotify, but none of my coworkers can access theres. Really annoying. What I wanted was really simple: a device that could act as a permanent "Spotify party" so my coworkers and I could simply walk in the office, have it automatically connect through bluetooth, and que up music. Instead what I got was a bunch of hoops and annoying setups, which after completion could still not give me this incredibly simple ask. I bought a simple MP3, put my spotify account on it, started a group and left it on top of the amp. Now my coworkers and I just join from our own Spotify without all having to setup accounts on this annoying app and device. Should have just done that from the start.

Sonos support for port and associated app is the worst
Ed from Charlottesville on 7/25/2024
The support and associated app for use with the Port have made the product a nonfunctional brick, with the poor technical "upgrades " and poor support you will end up with a frustrating experience with an overpriced device.

Simple setup, easy to use
Glen from Brick, NJ on 6/27/2024
Arrived in a eco-friendly package. Was very easy to install and get into my existing system. You can tell that Sonos has spent considerable time and effort understanding what is needed to get your product up and running. It was minimal effort with the system picking up on the device and getting everything setup, giving me the ability to confirm everything that you might want to change. Since it's been installed it has been very easy to use and very reliable. This replace a receiver that had failed and worked flawlessly. Very pleased with the guidance from Crutchfield and their experienced resources, and the product itself. Would highly recommend this.
Pros: Ease of use Ease of setup Reliable Eco Friendly packaging Excellent Crutchfield advice

I had an old ZP90 that worked well for many years connected to my stereo. It was getting old and only supported S1. I replaced it with the port and I love it. The matte black look is way easier on the eyes and to hide compared to the old white box sitting next to my black components. I think the sound is improved as well. Overall very happy. It's a keeper. Miracle Product
Michael from Huntsville, AL on 3/27/2024
When we purchased our home, we had a Niles whole house music system installed. Earlier this year, Logitech was no longer supporting the applications to run our Niles music system. So I was left with a music system it would not operate. I contacted Crutchfield and spoke to Clarence, and he told me about the Sonos Port. With his help and guidance, I was able to hook the Sonos Port up to my Niles audio system, and was able to get your system back up and running again. The Sonos Port is an amazing product. Thank you Crutchfield and your amazing staff for recommending it to me.

Overpriced
Aland from Temecula, CA on 1/3/2024
I put off buying this for a long time because of the price. It costs as much as the Move2 and doesn't have any speaker, so why so expensive? I bought it to use my home theater receiver and speakers with Sonos (we have 4 Sonos speakers in the house). It works fine, but the output from the device is low, whether I use the digital or analog outputs. I am using it with an Onkyo TX-RZ810 and I have the Audio Adjustment for that input maxed out at +12dB and it is still much quieter than any other input. The audio input on this is almost useless. I hooked it up to my Zone 2 output and when you play an audio source (I could only get analog audio to work) the Sonos system adds a delay, so when listening to the source component (phono) on the receiver and the other Sonos speakers, there is 2 second delay on the Sonos speakers. I had to use the Sonos input on the receiver so the sound would be synced around the house. The delay is adjustable, but even at the lowest setting (75ms), there is still an audible delay. If this was half the price I would give it a better review.

EASY FOR STREAMING
KMR from Armstrong Cty PA on 12/21/2023
The SONOS port is a great way to get audio streaming to an existing audio system. I like the SONOS products because they use their own WIFI and does not clog up my home internet. It took me less than 5 minutes to get it running. I actually have 2 of these. I can use them as two different dedicated audio systems. I also use the boost to increase the range. I know audiophiles do not think the PORT has the ultimate audio resolution. Through the years with SONOS products I have found them to be very DAC (digital to analog converter) friendly. Hook up a DAC to the PORT and it sounds great!!!
Pros: Ease of use
Cons: A little expensive

Huge Upgrade in sound quality
Daniel from San Rafael, CA on 4/26/2023
I've needed and wanted this Port for quite some time so that I could have my receiver capable of playing everything else in the house. I don't have an iPhone so Airplay isn't an option for syncing up all my existing Sonos stuff with my Yamaha receiver. I would also add that I had reservations about getting the Port since I am critical about sound quality and am annoyed that it isn't "Bit Perfect" and doesn't support High Resolution audio. People say you can't tell, and maybe I can't but if like to be the judge of that on my own. They being said, I just bit the bullet and got it. I'll say WOW. It's such a huge upgrade over Spotify Connect through my Yamaha Receiver and an even bigger upgrade over streaming to my TV and listening via eARC. Also I'd add that streaming to my receiver prior to this yielded results that weren't totally defined and I felt that even my crossover points were messed up with the sub and speakers struggling to find the sweet spot between 70-30 Hz. The Port made a huge difference in cleaning up this signal. Also I did fairly extensive A/B testing between digital out and using my Yamaha Receiver's DAC and RCA out (and using the Port's Dac). It's very subtle but my Receiver's DAC performed better, particularly with mids and Soundstage. This was a big upgrade to my system and I'm glad I finay got it.
Pros: Big Upgrade over Spotify Connect
Cons: Cost, doesn't support Hi-Res

Having lost all my vinyl and most of my CD collection in the last 10 years to hurricanes, I needed to find other ways to listen to quality music. Great little box to add streaming to an amp. I connect digitally and use my amp's DAC because it is 24-bit vs 16-bit on the Sonos, not that these old ears could tell. I just believe in getting as clean a signal as possible
Pros: Airplay compatible, plug and play setup
Cons: Could bump up the DAC to 32-bit for the cost

Sonos Port
Jim from Sun City West, AZ on 10/10/2022
The new Port replaced and older Sonos ZP90 that died after many years. Installing the new Port was less than intuitive and highly frustrating to this non techie. Ultimately, understood the Port uses new operating system and that the old Sonos 1 component must be removed. However when I opened my Sonos account it would not allow me to open system page to delete the ZP90. Ultimately had to go through process of opening new account. Initially, this process would not recognize the Port serial number, nor the just reset password, requiring several attempts. Once set up, it has an annoying trait. My system plays through and old style 6 channel Niles amplifier into six room with hard wired speakers, using individual controller in each room. When Sonus is turned on, the volume in each room has to be reset. The old ZP90 would maintain the prior individual room level setting. Still, overall very happy to have whole house sound system operating again.
Pros: Whole house music
Cons: Installation

It works, but not for hooking aftermarket sub to playbar setup with TV
Christopher from Olympia, WA on 8/22/2022
I bought this for the sole purpose of hooking its output to my Klipsch 12" sub. When playing music from air play it worked flawlessly because I could select all the "rooms" I wanted to play through. But then when I switched on the tv that is connected to my playbar with optical line, the signal would not then go to the port. The reason being, the app would not allow me to group the port with my playbar and both play 1s in the same room. It is frustrating that I could not add the port to the same room to get that big bass. So I called crutchfield and sent it back. As usual, they tried to help find a solution and were easy to work with.
Pros: Easily installed, works with apple airplay. Allows use of other branded powered sub when using airplay (but not when signal is piped into playbar)
Cons: App won't allow it to be installed in same "room" as playbar and surrounds. So won't allow aftermarket sub to get signal from playbar.

Easy to set up and once you do then you are able to play whatever is coming from your receiver to every other Sonos speaker. I'm new to the Sonos world and so far I'm very happy. We added the port to take advantage of our existing wired speakers in the living room, kitchen and patio and add some additional wireless speakers in dead spots. The single biggest thing I've been impressed about is the lack of any delay or out of phase problem between wireless and the wired speakers. I thought for sure there would be some kind of latency that I'd have to adjust for, but it works great out of the box. I'm planning on adding a couple of more speakers now that I got my feet wet.

Should sound way better than it does
William from ANN ARBOR, MI on 12/1/2021
I should have paid more attention to the critical reviews. Sonos, like other popular tech companies has gathered a very large cult following which seem to attract a wide audience who love the products. The Sonos idea is awesome, and for the most part, the software functions that way it should. I obtained the Port since I already have a few Sonos speakers, and was sorely disappointed in the sound quaity. I wanted the Port to bring digital magic to my very analog hifi setup, but it didn't. I've tried various settings, Fixed output, adjusting and resetting the EQ, adjusting the delay on the line input, etc. Even with the latest software update, this thing just sounds "sad". Music is dull and lifeless, there is no "air", no "warmth" and certainly no "oomph". I tried playing back a wide variety of music: John Coltrane, Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, MC5, Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead, Tribe Called Quest, Black Keys, Nina Simone, Cat Power, Phoebe Bridgers, Outkast, Miles Davis, Amy Winehouse. I tried everything, and the soul and life were just sucked out. It's not the stereo or the speakers, as LPs sound incredible, and other digital sources (via analog connections) also sound really good. Listening to Spotify from a MacBook Pro or from through a Samsung TV both sounded way better than listening to Spotify through the Sonos Port. Given that the Port is basically a Raspberry Pi connected to a DAC, it should have sounded way better than it does for th

Lots of options for older setups
Shawn from Spokane Valley, WA on 11/27/2021
The Sonos Port has helped to expand my homes soundscape. I have several rooms with in ceiling speakers and wanted to incorporate them into my growing Sonos ecosystem. They are all run from a central location. The Port has allowed me to bring 3/4 of my main floor to the network with one device. Yes, I wish the price was lower, but for what it does I am happy with it. I love that it will allow me to add other components into the system using the input. The 12v trigger was the biggest selling point for me. It allows the Sonos to remotely turn my amp on during play and will also shut it down after 2 minutes of the audio being paused or stopped. I did have to search for a power strip with this capability. They are not many to choose from. I found an older Niles unit on eBay that fills this role. When you price it out that I connected 4 main rooms to my Sonos ecosystem with one device, the price was cheaper than buying individual speakers for each area. It allowed me to connect with a fuller, more customizable sound and gives me the flexibility of maybe adding a turntable to the Whole house system. The device is a win-win for any older home sound systems.
Pros: Easy out of the box setup. Flexibility of adding legacy devices to the Sonos network. 12v trigger. Can use many airplay apps to play content.
Cons: Sound is pretty bad out of the box without adjusting the settings.

A little expensive, no toslink.
Crutchfield customer from Marshall, MN on 11/22/2021
This is a great product to add an existing system into the Sonos ecosystem. There isn't much to it. Just hook up the rca or digital outputs to your selected input and you're ready. Just a little disappointed with the price and lack of a toslink (optical) output. The old version had the optical out at the same price point. Would have rather a cheaper price or kept the optical out. It still works very well though.
Pros: Very compact, easy to set up, and works well.
Cons: A bit spendy and they cut out the toslink (optical) output.

Sonos Port
Crutchfield customer from Lansing, MI on 11/15/2021
This product does exactly what it's advertised to do, and I used it to integrate an older and larger stereo system that I wanted to retain with my newer Sonos One purchases. Setup was a bit more challenging that I would have liked, but Crutchfield expert Jac, talked me through the process and everything was working and sounding great by the calls end.
Pros: Improves your current stereo systems with newer Sonos products to provide the best of the old and the new.
Cons: Set-up was a bit challenging but not overwhelmingly complicated.

Excellent

Excellent product. the interface with Apple Music is probably the best in the industry. I tried other products but half of my Apple Music would not interface with those products. With Sonos, all of my music converted to their interface. But, if you are streaming to your amp/receiver, you will also need a DAC device so you get the full sound. Highs and mid-range don;t come through without a DAC device. I purchased a Cambridge100 DAC for this purpose.

Overpriced and Some Issues
Crutchfield customer from Vancouver, WA on 4/26/2021
This is a critical piece of gear if you want to integrate a traditional receiver into Sonos ecosystem. The product works well if you are playing audio from a streaming/Sonos source. Where it falls flat is if you are trying to broadcast an analog source (in my case a turntable source) out to your Sonos speakers. While the system can accommodate this type of setup the audio quality loss is significant. Increasing lag buffer time slightly increases audio quality, but then the Sonos speakers are out of sync with the receiver setup which is unlistenable unless there is no audio crossover. My other mark against this device is the price. This is essentially a wireless NIC plus RCA inputs and outputs. None of these technologies are complex or expensive. Were it not for being a critical part of the Sonos ecosystem, this device would likely be $70-150 at the most. The current price is definitely a cash grab that is allowed only because there is no other option that allows this type of integration. All-in-all, I am glad that this device exists and appreciate the capabilities that it offers, but wish the price was more reasonable and that the input passthrough quality was higher.
Pros: Great for integrating streaming sources to legacy audio equipment Easy to set up and use
Cons: Overpriced for the actual technology involved Input passthrough audio quality is poor

Should've done this a year ago!
Rebecca from Midlothian, VA on 4/13/2021
I had long planned to buy this and finally did so after excellent explanation and reassurance about the options for return if things didn't work out. I needed two additional cables 3.5 that did not come with the device and those that were provided by SONOS in the box were unusable for my application. I was able to do as the 4-star reviewer from MA also stated. EVENTUALLY...I got the device to recognize my logitech surround sound set, then I downloaded the pc version of SONOS on my pc and realized that I can play anything I can find on-line through "line-in" through SONOS. Yes, it's costly and way more complicated than indicated on the "fast start" paperwork included. After repeated calls to Crutchfield and a couple of restarts of the pc, hard-wired speakers connected to SONOS amps on 2 upper floors, 2 SONOS Play 1's on the first floor, and the Port connected to surround on my PC - very happy that CDs, radio, and anything with sound is all playing in 1-8 zones - anything I can get on my android or through my PC.
Pros: Customer service at Crutchfield led to my working through this. They get 5 stars!
Cons: Pretty complicated and no SONOS guidance options on line. I think the very high prices for SONOS is for the high tech R&D. This leads to low popularity of the devices, which is a circular situation.

We have a town home with 3 floors and on the lower level is a small bedroom we use as a music room. This little thing allows us to now listen to our vinyl in our living room on our main floor. My wife and I wanted to have the audio from our recently upgraded stereo throughout the house, but not using the old hard-wired speakers that are built into the house. So, after consulting with Gus at Crutchfield, we decided that the Sonos system would meet our needs. I'm glad to say that it greatly exceeded our expectations. Connection were simple and straight forward, and setting up the Port to use our wifi network was about as simple as it gets. Sonos app recognized our network almost immediately and made the connection. I believe it helped that we have Googlenet pucks on all three floors of our house, making it easy for the Sonos to link up.
Pros: Ease of installation, simplicity of operation.
Cons: None, so far.

Replace your Logitech Squeezebox
Jason from Gloucester, MA on 2/7/2020
A complete replacement for the long defunct Logitech Squeezebox system. Mine just died and I purchased this at the recommendation of a Crutchfield expert. It works great, although it is quite expensive. Some minor complaints: . The "quick start" insert included completely under represents the product capabilities - so much that I was ready to pack it back up and return it. For the heck of it I soldiered on, and am glad I did. . The user interface on the iPhone app is awkward, to say the least. For example, just try and find the master volume control! It's there, deeply buried. . Getting it to access my music files on my PC was not working until I downloaded the app on my PC . Manual (download) was not the best I've ever seen
Pros: It can access your music files on your PC, Amazon Music, etc, Radio stations - even more than the old Squeezebox
Cons: . Expensive . "Quick start" insert misleading - worse than useless . Awkward User Interface on iPhone App

Great addition to a Sonos system
Crutchfield customer from Mequon, WI on 1/5/2020
The Sonos Port serves two functions - it gets music from your Sonos system into non-Sonos music systems that have their own ampifier, like your stereo receiver, and it gets music into you Sonos sytem from non-Sonos music sources that have a line-level output, again like your stereo receiver. It's a little more complicated to set up than Sonos speakers like Play One, but not too much. Mainly just takes some exploring in the Sonos app to figure out how to fir it in to the rest of your Sonos sytem. Sound quality is good. Obviously to perform its functions it has to have a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) and Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC). Sonos doesn't give any information about what DAC chip(s) it uses but it sounds fine to my ears. I have a couple stand-alone DACs and this one doesn't sound any different. The Port also has a coaxial digital output and feeding that through my external DACs sounds the same. One thing to note is that the digital output seems to be limited to CD-quality, 16 bits at 44.1 kHZ, so no HiRes audio streaming using this box. This may be a limitation of the Sonos architecture as a whole. Overall, the Port does its job well and easily.
Pros: Easy setup Lets you use your existing audio gear with your Sonos system
Cons: No HiRes digital output Expensive

Software not so good
Crutchfield customer from Franklin, WI on 12/30/2019
Sonos control software for Windows 10 didn't work. It said it had successfully connected but then immediately said there was a problem communicating with the device. This is on a wired network. Worse yet, there was not useful error information provided which makes troubleshooting impossible. Terrible software! Also, mobile phone software requires android 7.0 or higher. I could not use the mobile software as an alternative because my phone is a few years old. Existing users complain that their devices stopped working when newer software updates were provided. Many complained the software updates were buggy which just led to a lot of frustration. In total, while the hardware might be good, the software is not.
Pros: Might work
Cons: Company does not have a good track record on the software side of things. Not worth the hassle, especially given the high price for the hardware.

Having the ability to hear my collection on the porch is worth something. I bought this through Crutchfield and not directly from sonos solely based on your customer service. Not knocking's sonos at all, but it's nice to get someone on the phone if you have any issues down the line.
