About the Cambridge Audio AXR85

Eric A.

A good-looking receiver to build your system around

I've always loved Cambridge Audio receivers — they provide plenty of power and handy analog connections, plus the brushed aluminum front plate projects an understated elegance. The beefy toroidal transformer inside the AXR85 produces 85 watts per channel — plenty to drive a pair of Aeromax 6 towers, or just about any other speakers you like.

Analog connections

This receiver is built with analog music lovers in mind. There's a dedicated phono stage for connecting a turntable with moving magnet cartridge, and three more RCA inputs for your other components. If you want to use your mobile device as a source, a 3.5mm aux input is conveniently located on the front panel. And built-in Bluetooth® makes it easy to stream music wirelessly from a compatible phone, tablet, or laptop.

The AXR85 features a stereo "record out" output on the back panel, and a mono RCA output lets you hook up a powered subwoofer to provide some extra punch. Two sets of binding posts give you the flexibility to set up A and B speaker pairs, and a front-panel selector makes switching between them easy.

Features

2Ch Amplifier: The Cambridge Audio AXR85 stereo receiver delivers 85 watts x 2 channels into 8-ohms @ 20-20kHz with 0.15% THD.

AM/FM Tuner: The built-in AM/FM tuner provides manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store up to 15 FM presets and 15 AM presets. The tuner supports RDS for station name song/artist information (no album art). You can select between US (AM: 530-1710kHz / FM: 87.5-108MHz) or European (AM: 522-1629kHz / FM: 87.5-108MHz) tuning. You can select between Stereo or Mono when listening to FM; for low quality stereo FM signals, selecting mono can usually reduce the noise. There is 75-ohm FM connector and a 300-ohm two-wire AM connector on the receiver back-panel. A FM wire antenna and AM loop antenna are included.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Cambridge Audio AXR85 features built-in Bluetooth 5.0 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) and control (AVRCP). You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content on your Bluetooth-enabled source device (such as your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer) to the AXR85 stereo receiver. You'll also be able to control basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track from the included remote. Advanced music navigation and song/artist information will still be done from your Bluetooth source device. The receiver can pair with up to 8 devices, but only one can be used for playback at a time. The unit will automatically connect with the last paired device when in wireless range (up to 33').

Line-Level RCA Inputs: The Cambridge Audio AXR85 stereo receiver is outfitted with three line-level analog RCA outputs for connection of external audio source devices - such as a CD player, tape-deck, or network streaming device (all sold separately).

Phono Input: The Cambridge Audio AXR85 has a built-in Phono preamplifier (Phono Stage) with a rear-panel phono input and ground terminal. The phono input supports turntables outfitted with Phono Cartridges of the Moving Magnet (MM) or high output Moving Coil (MC) type (between 2-6mV output and 30-50k load impedance). The Ground terminals on both the AXR85 stereo receiver and your turntable should be connected (where possible) with a ground wire for lowest noise/hum pickup.

Note: Low output Moving Coil cartridge types (<1mV and usually 10-1000 ohm load impedance) cannot be directly connected to the phono input and will require an external phono preamplifier (sold separately) compatible with low output Moving Coil cartridges.

Front-Panel Aux Input: The front-panel Aux input consists of a 3.5mm minijack for connection of a portable audio device with an analog line-level or headphone output.

Record Output: The Cambridge Audio AXR85 stereo receiver features a stereo RCA record output for connecting a CD recorder, tape deck or other compatible recording device. The record output provides a constant line level output that does not fluctuate with the volume of the stereo receiver.

Note: The Record output cannot be used as a preamp output or subwoofer output.

Binding Post A/B Speaker Terminals: The Cambridge Audio AXR85 is equipped with a A & B speaker terminals for connecting up to two pair of loudspeakers or bi-wiring a single pair of loudspeakers. These binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). Plastic caps need to be removed from the binding post terminals in order to use banana plugs. When connecting a single pair of speakers you can use 4-ohm to 8-ohm compatible speakers. When connecting two pair of loudspeakers or when bi-wiring a single pair of loudspeaker use only 8-ohm compatible speakers.

Note: When used together, the A & B speaker output terminals will always playback the same source content at the same volume level.

Subwoofer Output: The Cambridge Audio stereo receiver is equipped with a mono-RCA subwoofer output for connecting a powered subwoofer. The subwoofer output features a fixed 200Hz low-pass crossover filter.

1/4" Headphone Jack: The front-panel 1/4" headphone jack allows for connection of a set of stereo headphones with an impedance between 32 and 600-ohms. Connecting a set of headphones will automatically mute the stereo receiver's speaker outputs.

USB Charging Port: There is a USB-A (5V/500mA) port located on the back of the AXR85 stereo receiver that can be used to charge your smartphone or tablet, or supply power to a Bluetooth adapter.

Note: This USB port does not support audio playback.

Simple Control: The Cambridge Audio stereo receiver offers front-panel controls for simple, convenient operation. The included IR remote provides wireless operation of the stereo receiver.

  • Volume/Mute: A front-panel rotary knob or push-buttons on the remote control the volume level of the receiver's speaker outputs, subwoofer output, and headphone output. It does not affect the level of the Record Output. There is also a Mute function on the remote control.
  • Tone & Balance: You'll be able to adjust Bass (100Hz) & Treble (20kHz) from -10 to +10dB, as well as adjust the balance in sound output between the connected left and right speakers.

Front-Panel Display: The front-panel display indicates selected input source, station identification, and menu selections; as well as volume and tone levels.

Q
Can I use wireless headphones with this receiver? I notice that the accessories tab has all wired headphones. When nature calls I would like to get up and go and not leave the music behind.
diggy  May 02, 2023
1 answer
A
This Cambridge Audio AXR85 has Bluetooth streaming for source input (tunes from your smartphone), but sadly does not have any way to connect wirelessly to a pair of headphones. You do have some options for adding a pair of headphones wirelessly, however. The HOSA IBT 402 drive in the first link can be added to almost any headphone output with an adapter. This would allow you to choose any pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones with the Cambridge! Make sure to add the HOSA headphone adapter in the second link for the complete kit! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_979IBT402/HOSA-IBT-402-Drive.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_979GHP105/Hosa-Headphone-Adapter.html

Q
Can I run all of my externals from my DAC Magic200 (RCA) into the AXR85?
daniel  Nov 19, 2022
1 answer
A
You can connect the unbalanced RCA output of your DacMagic 200M to one of three available RCA inputs on the AXR85, Daniel. This would allow you to play any source through the DacMagic and then out through the fantastic AXR85 to your choice of speakers!

Q
Is there a way to turn off the auto power off feature?
david  Oct 20, 2022
1 answer
A
It does look like you can customize that auto power down (or APD as Cambridge calls it) Dave. You can enable and disable the units APD setting, here's how: Press and hold the power button until the LED flashes in sequence. Standby flashes 5 times-APD disabled and "APD OFF" will be shown on the display. Standby flashes 10 times-APD enabled and "APD ON" will be shown on the display. Repeating the procedure will just cycle back and forth between the two options, so you can repeat the process if needed to confirm. I hope this helps!

Q
What is the capacitance for mm cartridge? Adjustable?
eugene  May 28, 2022
1 answer
A
A MM cartridge total load capacitance is approximately seventy-two kHz and is not adjustable. Seventy-two is the average for MM cartridges--a lower capacitance than 72kHz is not ideal for output.

What speaker size watts etc do you recommend?
james  Apr 08, 2022

A
I was using the Pioneer SP-22-LR Andrew Jones speakers in my small 12X12 office and was amazed at how great the quality was. We moved and I now have a dedicated listening room 14X16. I just upgraded to the ELAC 6.2 Andrew Jones designed speakers and WOW!! And Crutchfield had them on sale also. (both are 6 ohm speakers)

Q
Is it possible to run audio from my TV to the axr 85 if my TV only has a digital audio out and no rca audio out?
richard  Feb 14, 2022
3 answers
A
Not with the axr85 it only has RCA jacks. However, the axr100 does have toslink and S/P DIF digital inputs
robert  Feb 15, 2022
A
I don't think so. There Aux input is analog.
philip  Feb 14, 2022
A
You will need to use Bluetooth for the audio connection. Find a good digital audio to Bluetooth converter for your TV and use your BT channel on your axr 85. I use the RCA output on my TV with my axr 85 and it worked very well.

How can this receiver stream music from my phone if it doesn't have a DAC?
robert  Dec 18, 2021

A
It does and very well. The Bluetooth receiver pars with either my iPhone or iPad and I mainly listen to Spotify. I also have the matching CD player. I have a fluance turntable and the receiver plays the recorded sounds. I have a small room so small speakers. Pioneer sp bs22lr speakers sound very good.
michael l.  Dec 18, 2021
A
I use the Bluetooth option
bret  Dec 18, 2021
A
It uses Bluetooth streaming, so no DAC needed.
steve  Dec 18, 2021
A
You can stream using the Bluetooth function. I stream Spotify through the receiver using my iPhone. The start/stop/pause functions will work from your phone as well. The sound quality is quite good.
kevin  Dec 18, 2021
A
"Stream" would be via Bluetooth- can't stream independently of a phone or similar
tim  Dec 18, 2021
Q
The receiver seems to have a hard time connecting to bluetooth. It takes several tries to get the sound to come through my speakers. This is every time I try to connect to my imac or phone. How do I get my bluetooth to connect smoothly?
hannah  Aug 06, 2021
5 answers
A
Be sure to turn off all Bluetooth sources except the one you want to connect . Are you seeing your Bluetooth source as connected?
james  Aug 08, 2021
A
I have found with some of the latest IOS updates that there are some devices that no longer connect automatically at all, and others where I have to go into the phone, disconnect, and restart Bluetooth. My Bose Soundlink is one example. I don't think there's anything to be done at the receiver end. You might also try deleting the device from your IOS devices, restarting them, and then repairing.
carl  Aug 07, 2021
A
The weak point of this receiver is it's Bluetooth connection and DAC. Otherwise, a great receiver. I use a separate Bluetooth DAC to avoid your issue. Sounds much better as well.
guy  Aug 06, 2021
A
Is your receiver inside a cabinet or more out in the open like on top of a cabinet or rack? I initially had similar issues when it was inside a cabinet, surrounded by wood on three sides. Placing the receiver more out in the open should help. I also am in the habit of connecting initially when within 10 feet of the receiver. I hope this helps.
kevin  Aug 06, 2021
A
Bluetooth works very well with a Samsung Galaxy A tablet. It might be your sender that is less than reliable.

Q
Can I hookup a center channel speaker to this?
kevin  Jun 02, 2021
3 answers
A
No, this a 2 channel stereo left right output section.
chris  Jun 25, 2021
A
No, subwoofer only. I did use it with my TV as just a 2 Channel with a sub with good results though. Also, I would strongly suggested an inexpensive digital to analog device between your TV and the Cambridge as this device eliminated all ancillary noise. It's a great 2 channel receiver for music that does the job with a TV. Hope that helps!
kevin  Jun 25, 2021
A
No, this is a stereo only unit. It just has two right and left channels.

Q
On the axr85 where is the impedance switch for 6/8 ohms?
armando  Apr 26, 2021

There is no impedance switch. Speakers with an impedance of 4-8 ohms can be used with the AXR85. The manual states the following: "When using two pairs of speakers, use speakers with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms each. "

Bluetooth sound quality is good most of the time. Occasionally the pairing seems to be less than ideal and the sound quality is a bit off but this could be my source device. To put a number on quality, BT is about 80% as good as a CD. Still very listenable.

This Receiver does not have WiFi capability d...But the Bluetooth connection readily makes my phone available for streaming audio services via the bluetooth. The quality is excellent. Only caveat is that the bluetooth needs to be fairly close to stay connected. Great receiver, BTW.

Does the Cambridge AXR85 Receiver have a fan motor inside for cooling? It has a noise as if a fan is running, it is very annoying. Has anyone else noticed this or do i have a dud?
vaughn  Aug 22, 2020

A
After exchanging several emails I had to send my new AXR85 in for service because of the fan noise. It was very annoying. I have not heard the fan since the receiver was returned to me. I do not know if they replaced the entire unit, just disabled the fan or if they found some other problem. I never push the receiver so over heating should not be a problem for me.
philip  Feb 14, 2022
A
Yes, there is a fan inside.
rich  Aug 23, 2020
A
Yes. Mine isn't too loud. Amps generate heat so I reckon it's necessary.

glen  Aug 28, 2020

Not sure about the question. It runs off 110. Power output is 85 watts per channel. I like the unit but in hindsight I would go with the arx100 for the optical inputs.

Q
Should this be in a ventilated area, i.e., not in a closed cabinet? I guess I'm asking how much heat do the amps generate?
carl  Aug 12, 2020
5 answers
A
mine is on an open shelf, i wouldn't use it in a closed space.
carl l  Aug 21, 2020
A
It doesn't seem to generate a lot of heat, runs much cooler than my previous receiver. Still, I would make sure there is some ventilation, as that could change depending on how enclosed it will be
steve  Aug 21, 2020
A
I have not noticed an unusually high amount of heat coming from the top vents but would definitely recommend leaving ample room above the unit to allow for heat to escape.
joseph  Aug 21, 2020
A
I have had this receiver for a couple of weeks and my unit is not enclosed. I guess it all depends on how long you will be playing it at 1 time. From my experience when enclosed its always good to have some type of ventilation when enclosed
joseph  Aug 21, 2020
A
My AXR85 is not in a cabinet. This receiver generates enough heat to require an internal cooling fan and putting in a closed cabinet would probably get pretty warm. A well vented cabinet should be okay.
philip  Aug 21, 2020

The AXR85 has a bluetooth antenna. Used for wireless streaming bluetooth (A2DP/AVRCP) audio capability directly from most phones, tablets, and laptops. There are no USB ports on the receiver. It does have an AUX Input Socket (3.5mm stereo jack) on the front panel for connecting portable audio devices like an MP3 player.

I do not think so, I use a pair of vintage InfintyQe2 speakers, I do use the Bluetooth feature to play music from online via my tablet. I hope this helps, I do like the unit.

Probably. It says it has Bluetooth.

Not directly. It receives Bluetooth but doesn't have a Bluetooth out.

Q
Can this be paired with AT-LP120?

You can absolutely pair this with an AT-LP120. Use the Phono input in the back or an Auxillary input if you're using a separate preamp. The phono stage on the AXR85 is much better than the internal preamp your LP120 has. I have owned this exact receiver for 6 months and it's well worth it. The internal DAC is also awesome for streaming music from your phone etc.

This amp has a dedicated phono input, meaning that you don't need (or want) a preamp going into the phono input. It's my understanding that AT-LP120 has a switchable preamp, so as long as you can switch it off, it would work with this amp.

Q
can this be used with another Cambridge Audio preamplifier? if yes, which one?

I contacted Cambridge Audio and they said the Cambridge Solo phono preamplifier has better circuitry than the phono preamp in the AXR85. I received my Solo yesterday and immediately heard the difference. I hear more detail in the recordings, and the soundstage is more spacious. I recommend this as a way to upgrade your vinyl experience.

I would think a preamplifier bus unnecessary as the AXR85 containebs a preamp already. This would make adding another redundant. Secondly, the connections include inbound for line level sources and outbound connections for speakers.

I'm afraid I'm not sure. My setup is for a small room so it has more than enough power for me...right now. It is a good question in case I decide to put my system in a bigger room. But it is a fantastic receiver!

This is an audio receiver, which means is has a radio tuner, a preamplifier, and a power amplifier (twoz channel), all in one case. Therefore a separate preamplifier would be redundant (and silly).
