About the iDatalink Maestro RR2 Interface Module

Bob Bihlmayer

Keep your vehicle's features

iDatalink's Maestro ADS-MRR2 module, along with the correct interface harness for your vehicle, allows you to install a new car stereo in select late-model Chrysler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Honda/Acura, Subaru, Toyota/Scion, and Volkswagen vehicles while retaining your steering wheel audio controls and other factory conveniences you've grown accustomed to. And setup only takes a few minutes via Bluetooth from your smartphone or other device, a big improvement over previous models. You'll also need an additional Maestro vehicle-specific wiring harness that connects your new receiver to the ADS-MRR2 module and your vehicle's wiring. When you purchase a new car stereo, we will automatically offer this harness along with ADS-MRR2 module at a discounted price on your way to the Cart.

Here's how it works

First, you connect the Maestro to your computer using the included USB cable or to your smartphone or other device via Bluetooth, visit www.idatalink.com/maestro, and follow the instructions. Once the unit has been "flashed," it's ready to go. Next, you'll either solder or crimp the vehicle-specific Maestro harness (sold separately) to your new receiver's wiring, just like you would with any Crutchfield wiring harness or wiring adapter.

Retains steering wheel audio controls

The ADS-MRR2 module also allows you to use your factory steering wheel audio controls with your new receiver. Using the intuitive web programming interface, each factory button can be assigned a specific radio function. Better yet, you can also assign a secondary "press and hold" radio function to each factory button, effectively doubling what can be controlled. It's simple to update the module's firmware and software via a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Command centre

The ADS-MRR2 features three programmable outputs which allow you to control relay-driven aftermarket accessories from an iDatalink Serial Port-compatible Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, Sony, or Pioneer in-dash receiver. These outputs can be individually configured to Latch, Toggle, Follow a CAN signal in the car (firmware dependent), or have a custom output configuration, as well as setting Delay On and Delay Off times for each output. You can also assign a steering wheel control button from the vehicle to control one of these outputs. The ADS-MRR2 also features a dedicated port for radar detector integration that allows you to connect to select Escort radar detectors (sold separately).

Keeping your factory features with an iDatalink-compatible car stereo

If you're buying a compatible Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, Sony, or Alpine receiver, you'll enjoy the outstanding performance of your receiver, plus seamless touchscreen control over most of the factory features in select vehicles (see Details for specific functions and installation notes). You'll also see a list of these features on the way to the Cart with the car stereo you've selected.

With most iDatalink-compatible car stereos, you'll also be able to add additional features like performance gauges, climate controls, and parking assistance that appear on your new receiver's touchscreen.

Car stereos that aren't iDatalink-compatible

With car stereos that are not iDatalink-compatible, you'll usually retain your steering wheel controls and the use of your factory amplifier, although retained features vary according to the vehicle. Again, you'll see a list of features on the way to the Cart.

Product Research

iDatalink Maestro RR2
Available Installation Harnesses

Web-Programmable Radio Replacement Solution: The iDatalink Maestro RR2 (ADS-MRR2) is part of a web-programmable solution that allows you to replace the factory radio in many 2006-up Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/RAM, Toyota/Scion, Honda/Acura, Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Fiat, Subaru, Volkswagen, and Audi vehicles; as well as Harley Davidson motorcycles (requires additional vehicle specific harness). Retained features will vary by vehicle and aftermarket head unit.

Flashing Module via Weblink Desktop: The iDatalink Maestro RR2 (ADS-MRR2) will need to be loaded with correct firmware before installation. The included USB cable plugs into your computer and allows you to "flash" the Maestro RR2 with the appropriate firmware to prepare it for installation. Simply download Weblink Desktop (for Windows and Mac) onto your computer to access the appropriate firmware. System requirements include -

  • Windows PC (10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP/2000) or Mac OS X (Mojave [10.14], HighSierra [10.13], Sierra [10.12], El-Capitan [10.11])
  • Available USB port (version 2.0 or 3.0)
  • 4GB RAM or more
  • 200MB available space on HDD
  • Internet connection

Note: Not compatible with Chromebook and other operating systems not listed above.

WeblinkMaestro App: The WeblinkMaestro app (for Apple iOS and Android OS) can now be used to flash and program the iDatalink Maestro RR2 (ADS-MRR2) using your compatible smartphone or tablet device via a wireless Bluetooth connection. An online Weblink account will still be required. In addition, you will be able to re-configure the iDatalink Maestro RR2 and adjust any settings you may have missed during your initial setup, such as changing a SWC command. Firmware & software updates can also be done via the WeblinkMaestro app over a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Aftermarket Radio Compatibility: The iDatalink Maestro RR2 (ADS-MRR2) is fully compatible with select aftermarket receivers with an iDatalink Serial Port and partially compatible with non-serial port aftermarket head units. Features will vary by vehicle and type of aftermarket head unit.

  • Fully Compatible Serial Port Aftermarket Receivers: The iDatalink Maestro RR2 is fully compatible with the select Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, Sony, and Pioneer in-dash receivers which feature an iDatalink Serial Port. Click here for a list of compatible radios.
  • Partially Compatible Non-Serial Port Radios: The ADS-MRR2 is also compatible with non-serial port radios from Alpine, Axxera (Dual), Blaupunkt, Boss, Boyo, Clarion, Eclipse, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony.

Retained Features: The iDatalink Maestro RR2 lets your retain important factory features and functions - including Infotainment systems like Ford Sync, OnStar, and U-Connect. Other retained factory features and functions include Steering Wheel Controls, Satellite Radio (external tuners only), USB ports, Aux inputs, Bluetooth, RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment) and Backup Cameras. In addition, your vehicle's Warning Chimes and RAP are retained. In some cases the factory amplified system will be retained, while other times the factory amplifier will be bypassed.

Note: Retained features & functions will vary by vehicle.

Steering Wheel Controls: The iDatalink Maestro RR2 also lets you retain the factory steering wheel controls in a variety of vehicles when replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket stereo that offers a SWC input. In addition to retaining the original steering wheel functions, you can assign secondary press & hold features to the buttons of your choice. You may or may not need to splice into your factory wirining (depending on vehicle make and model).

Note: Steering wheel controls work with the following brands - Alpine, Axxera (Dual), Blaupunkt, Boss, Clarion, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, and Sony. Other brands are not supported.

Extra features: When installing an iDatalink Serial Port-compatible Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, Sony, or Pioneer in-dash receiver in select Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, Toyota/Scion, Honda/Acura, Fiat, and Volkswagen/Audi vehicles, the iDatalink Maestro RR2 offers extra features. The following extra features will vary by aftermarket head unit and make/model/year vehicle.

  • Climate Controls: Control your climate, defrost, and heated seat settings directly from your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen.
  • Vehicle Info: Monitor your car's door status, tire pressure, read/reset engine codes, and more directly from your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen.
  • Gauges: Displays speed, boost, turbo, RPM, engine temperature and more directly on your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen.
  • Visual Parking Assistance: Displays visual proximity indicators directly on your aftermarket head unit's LCD touchscreen for extra security.
Note: 2014-2015 Pioneer receivers with the iDatalink Serial Port and non-serial port aftermarket radios do not support these Extra features.

Navigation Outputs: The ADS-MRR2 provides a VSS (vehicle speed sense), Foot Brake, Parking Brake, and a Reverse Light output to make installing practically any aftermarket navigation radio simpler and less time consuming.

Amp Turn-On Lead: The ADS-MRR2 provides an amp turn-on lead to turn on any factory amps when installing virtually any aftermarket head unit. Both balance & fade control are retained in many vehicles with analog amplifier systems. iDatalink Serial Port compatible head units from Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, Sony, and Pioneer also support fading in vehicles with digital amplifier systems.

Note: If you are installing an aftermarket head unit that does not feature an iDatalink serial port, then you will not be able to fade in vehicles with digital amplifier systems. In this case, adjust the factory amplifier's fader prior to installation of the new aftermarket head unit.

Programmable Outputs: The ADS-MRR2 features three programmable outputs which can be configured to control aftermarket accessories one may add to the vehicle from an iDatalink Serial Port compatible Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, Sony, or Pioneer in-dash receiver. These outputs can be configured to Latch, Toggle, Follow a CAN signal in the car (firmware dependent), or have a custom output configuration. You can even configure Delay On and Delay OFF times for each output. You can also assign a steering wheel control button from the vehicle to control one of these outputs.

Escort Radar Detector Port: When installing an iDatalink Serial Port compatible Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, Sony, or Pioneer in-dash receiver, the iDatalink Maestro RR2 features a dedicated port for Escort Radar integration with select Escort models, such as the Escort iX Ci and Escort MAX Ci (sold separately).

Installation Note: Connecting the module, vehicle specific harness, and aftermarket head unit together requires hard-wiring numerous wires by soldering or using Posi-Twist connectors.

Q
I have a 2011 dodge challenger srt8 392 with a kenwood dmx907s want to know what functions will I gain with this?

Greetings Mario. Thank you for your question. Full details and options you can achieve with the RR2 can be found by entering your vehicle and the Kenwood stereo on the Maestro website below. https://www.idatalinkmaestro.com/en

Q
Hello, I have a Kenwood DMX7022S on a 2011 WRX STI. The head unit model does not seem to appear in the compatibility list on the idatalink website, despite Kenwood saying it is compatible. May I just validate if this is indeed compatible with the Maestro RR2 and that I would be able to display OBD2 information?
paul  Jan 16, 2024
1 answer
A
If you want to display vehicle gauges and OBD II information Paul, you will need to upgrade to a radio that is listed in the flashing menu for the Maestro RR2. The DMX7022S is technically compatible but has partial Maestro support. Radios with partial support will work to retain many of your factory features and systems using the included serial cable connection. However, these radios lack the display screens for Vehicle Information, Climate Control, Parking Assist and Gauges. No update to these radios is available to support these features, so the best move is to upgrade the radio to enjoy those features you need!

2013 Toyota Venza with navigation but not JBL. I had no luck getting the out of park signal with other adapters. Seems it only comes from the can bus and is what turns on the camera. Does this fix that? I had to use an android unit to achieve this but it's a little janky.

A
Using the iDatalink Maestro (RR1 or RR2) in conjunction with the iDatalink HRN-HRR-TO2 harness in the link below will provide the reverse trigger and parking brake connection within the TO2 harness, Matthew. We have a few adapter options for your vehicle from Crux and PAC that both provide those connections. The factory backup camera is also retained with Maestro interfaces, using MRR or MRR2! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_794HRRTO2C/iDatalink-HRN-HRR-TO2-ADS-MRR-or-ADS-MRR2-module-also-required.html

The MRR2 is compatible with your vehicle. However, we do not have the additional installation parts necessary to replace your factory radio.

Q
2007 Mustang, no shaker no steering wheel controls external amp. Want to use with Kenwood DMX1037S to get radar detector and ECM info on the Kenwood. Do I need the Ford harness HRN-RR-FO1 or is a simple metra harness sufficient? Thanks
trcim4pu  May 07, 2023
1 answer
A
The Kenwood DMX1037S is a fantastic choice for radar detector information to be displayed on-screen when paired with a compatible K40 or Escort system, Todd. You will also need the HRN-RR-FO1 harness as it is also crucial to the operation of the complete setup. The link below is the parts loadout minus the Kenwood DMX1037S as it is temporarily unavailable at this time, sadly. This link has everything you would need to pair with the Kenwood radio for install, I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rXYEc222/cart/EmailCart.aspx?emKey=3134690

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Maestro downloads the Pids from your ECM and will give you options in each gauge display as to which ones you can view in each gauge. Hope this helps

I was wondering how to flash the RR2 with new firmware after it has been installed. I think it can be done via Bluetooth but I can't seem to find instructions on the Idatalink Maestro web site. Do any of y'all have a link?

If you purchased the product from Crutchfield, feel free to contact our Tech Support team. They can walk you through the settings on the product and see if there may be a fix. Our toll-free Tech Support number is printed on your invoice, and is also available under the "My Orders" tab in the "My Account" section of our website. If you did not purchase the unit from Crutchfield, then you may want to contact the manufacturer. Kenny Crutchfield Order Support

Q
The Maestro RR2 manufacturer website indicates that the product will fit my Miata NC, but Crutchfield is indicating that it doesn't fit. Has anyone installed this into a 2012 Miata Sport (non-bose) with steering wheel controls?

A
I'd go with what the idatalink website say. From what I learned the Maestro RR2 can still work as a expensive steering wheel control mod. I had the same issue when I used it in a 2011 Ford Taurus. I was able to get most of the features even the steering wheel controls
