About the iDatalink KIT-FTR1 Dash and Wiring Kit

Bob Bihlmayer

Install a new radio in your Ford truck

You bought a 2015-21 Ford pickup — it's a great vehicle, but its dashboard makes it difficult to upgrade the factory radio. The iDatalink KIT-FTR1 factory system adapter (along with the Maestro ADS-MRR module, sold separately) gives you everything you need to install an aftermarket double-DIN (4" tall) stereo and wire it up to your Ford pickup with its 4.3" My Ford radio. With any car stereo, this package retains your amplifier and backup camera (if equipped), along with your steering wheel audio controls.

iDatalink to the rescue

Install an iDatalink-compatible car stereo from Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, Sony, or Pioneer, and you'll also retain your truck's SYNC features, including hands-free calling and music streaming. You'll also retain the fader control and full functionality of your factory amplifier, along with your rear seat entertainment system (if present). You can set up gauges on your new car stereo's touchscreen to check engine performance and other vehicle data, such as tire pressure, battery voltage, and "door ajar" warnings. You'll be able to choose which gauges you'd like to appear on the screen, and you'll even be able to check the engine codes when a warning light comes on.

Features

Ford F-Series OEM Integration Dash Kit & Vehicle Harness: The iDatalink Maestro KIT-FTR1 consists of an OEM integration dash kit and vehicle harness designed specifically for select 2015+ Ford F-Series trucks with the 4.3-inch "My Ford" factory radio. The KIT-FTR1 lets you replace the "My Ford" factory radio with an iDatalink Serial Port compatible head unit or other aftermarket head unit using the Maestro RR or RR2 Car Radio Replacement Interface module (sold separately) .

  • Click here for a list of compatible Ford F-Series trucks.
  • Click here for a list of compatible aftermarket radios with an iDatalink Serial Port.
Note: The iDatalink Maestro KIT-FTR1 requires the purchase of the iDatalink Maestro RR or RR2 (sold separately) and the download of a vehicle specific firmware from iDatalink's Weblink Desktop (for Windows and Mac).

Head Unit Connection: The KIT-FTR1 supports iDatalink's Direct T-Harnesses (sold separately) for direct connection to select iDatalink Serial Port compatible head units (including Kenwood, JVC, Alpine, Sony, and Pioneer radios) - replacing the wiring harness that comes with your aftermarket stereo (some hardwiring may still be required). If connecting to an aftermarket head unit that does not support an iDatalink Direct T-Harness, you'll need to cut off and remove the 20-pin black connector from the KIT-FTR1's harness and splice each wire directly to the aftermarket radio's corresponding wire.

Flashing Module via Weblink Desktop: The iDatalink Maestro RR or RR2 will need to be loaded with correct firmware before installation. The included USB cable plugs into your computer and allows you to "flash" the Maestro RR or RR2 with the appropriate firmware to prepare it for installation. Simply download Weblink Desktop (for Windows and Mac) onto your computer to access the appropriate firmware. System requirements include -

  • Windows PC (10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP/2000) or Mac OS X (Mojave [10.14], HighSierra [10.13], Sierra [10.12], El-Capitan [10.11])
  • Available USB port (version 2.0 or 3.0)
  • 4GB RAM or more
  • 200MB available space on HDD
  • Internet connection

Both USB ports support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality (with compatible headunit and phone).

Retained Features: The follow factory features (if applicable) are retained when replacing your aftermarket head unit with a compatible iDatalink Serial Port head unit from Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony using the Maestro RR or RR2 Car Radio Replacement Interface module and KIT-FTR1 installation kit.

Note: When installing an aftermarket head unit without the iDatalink Serial Port, only steering wheel control and amplifier turn-on on are retained.

Q
Hi! I have a 2018 F150 XLT model. I have a Sony AX7000 radio and I was wonder if this kit would allow me to keep my steering wheel controls and backup camera. I would also like to keep my factory USB since the CarPlay in my Sony radio is wired? Thanks in advance!
matthew  Sep 10, 2022

A
Thank you for reaching out to us! That kit will retain your steering wheel controls and factory backup camera but unfortunately will not retain the factory USB input with that Sony unit.

Q
i have a pioneer avh-x1600 dvd player that i want to put in my 2018 ford f150 which has a rear camera and steering wheel controls for the radio. what would i need to install? i know the pioneer deck has a plug in for the camera but what would i need for the steering wheel controls?

A
Good question! With that dash kit you need two other adapters to make your system work. I linked a cart down below that would have a sample kit with the pieces. There are a few different trim models of F-150s that this kit can work with and this one worked with them but just to be sure you can give our advisors a call at 800.324.9695 to verify your exact model of f-150 would match with these products. https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rXYEc222/cart/EmailCart.aspx?emKey=2925414

Q
Does this kit fit a 2017 F250 XLT that has the factory CD player slot?
robbie  Oct 18, 2021
2 answers
A
After following the crutchfield directions, it will. If you use an after market radio, you will not need the factory CD player. For more tech advice call to speak to a adviser, they are very knowledgeable.
john  Oct 18, 2021
A
I do believe it does however you will not be able to keep the factory CD player hooked up. The lower tray of the kit occupies that area. This is a good kit for the F150. I liked it very much. Had nice sleek fit no gaps very flush, had several compliments on it.
martin  Oct 18, 2021
Q
Does this kit allow use of the stock f150 microphone or do you have to use the mic included with the aftermarket stereo?
hank  Oct 15, 2021
1 answer
A
No you will have to use the aftermarket microphone, I have done a lot of research on this and there is no way to connect the factory microphone to an aftermarket radio. That's the only drawback in my book.
martin  Oct 18, 2021
Q
What size touch screen does it fit?
russel  Aug 30, 2021
1 answer
A
This kit works with select radios that have a floating screen of up to 10.1" in size. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation

Q
Why would this not fit a 2020 or 2021 F250/350 if no changes in interior were made on those year models?
nathan  Feb 21, 2021
1 answer
A
It does fit a 2021.. Just make sure you get the PROPER FO3 adapter harness .. MINE didn't have the CAN wires run.. Took days of chasing wiring over the weekend then Called tech support and they KNEW right off they sent a product that is faulty.. I had to tap in to my vehicle harness for the 2 CAN wires and it works good..

Q
Does this fit a 2020 f350?
jbrock  Oct 16, 2020

A
Negative, the only 2020 it fits is an f150
james  Oct 29, 2020
A
My F350 is a 2019 and it fit perfect. I'm not aware of any changes to the 2020 interior, so yes, it should be what you need.
tyler  Oct 27, 2020
Q
Do I need a Maestro ADS-MRR if my truck (F150 2020) doesnt have steering controls or a touch screen? Just a back up camera (straight stock with roll up windows). I dont beleive it has an amp either.
chris  Jul 24, 2020
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
what about the preexisting usb ports down below. Would they still be functional? Along with the additional 2 added?
kyle  Jul 22, 2020
2 answers
A
no the pre-existing USB ports will not work once you take out the factory radio.
raymond  Jul 22, 2020
A
Yes, the ones down below still exsist and function.
timothy van  Jul 22, 2020
Q
If I do not have back up cam or steering wheel controls do I need to purchase ADS-MRR module?
wesley  Nov 20, 2019
1 answer
A
Yes you will need the ADS-MRR module to use this kit. There might be other options for installing a radio into your pickup and I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to check

Q
Why is the OBD connector used?
austin  Apr 23, 2018

A
On the Kenwood radio it is capable of showing Tire pressures and many other engine and other data, speed.fuel level, exhaust and intake temperatures and other thing I believe it will show quarter mile time. All of this data comes from the obd connector.
kelly  Apr 23, 2018
A
The OBD2 connector is used to display certain vehicle information on the aftermarket stereos scream
greg  Apr 23, 2018
A
I don't know. I had it installed by a professional.
raymond  Apr 23, 2018
A
You can monitor you vehicle and get warnings.
gary  Apr 23, 2018
Q
The details tab on the iDatalink KIT-FTR1 list "retained features" and sirius is one of them. I have a 2017 F150 and the sirius radio already has a lifetime subscription. Can I keep the factory sirius if I add a new touchscreen navigation deck or will it require a new sirius reciever?
derek paul  Feb 20, 2018
2 answers
A
I think MOST nav units are SiriusXM compatible -It's really more up to what type of stereo you are installing than it is the Maestro unit. I know the tuner antenna module to plug into my Kenwood was only $30 and I used the factory antenna. Sirius swapped my sub right over to the new module no problem.
scott  Apr 22, 2018
A
The kit will only retain the factory SiriusXM tuner when it's external (not built-into the factory stereo chassis) and in all versions of the 2017 F-150, the factory satellite radio tuner is built-into the stock stereo chassis. For additional assistance and personalized recommendations, feel free to contact us directly by phone or through our online chat service: https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx
