Features

Vehicle Compatibility: The CRUX HBRHD-61A is a radio replacement interface for select 1998-2013 Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. It facilitates the integration of an after-market radio to enable retention of certain factory features when replacing a factory-installed radio and is also pre-programmed for retention of handle bar controls.

Make Model Year
Harley-Davidson Road Glide (FLTR) 1998-2013
Street Glide (FLHX/FLHT) 1998-2013
Note: The wiring harness only includes leads for the front left & right speakers. If your motorcycle has rear speakers, they will need to be hardwired.

Retains Handle Bar Controls: The CRUX HBRHD-61A will retain your Harley-Davidson's handle bar controls. The included harness is equipped with a 3.5mm connector and a blue/yellow wire; only one will be used based on your brand of aftermarket head unit (see Installation Instructions). You will also need to configure the HBRHD-61A's dip-switches based on your brand aftermarket head unit (see Installation Instructions). Retained handle bar control functions include -

  • Source
  • Volume Up/Down
  • Mute
  • Track/Seek Up, Track/Seek Down
  • Voice Control (requires aftermarket head unit with Siri or Android control)
Note: The CRUX HBRHD-61A is compatible with Alpine, Boss, Clarion, Dual/Axxera, JVC, Kenwood, Jensen, Pioneer, Sony, and other aftermarket head units with steering wheel control wire or input.

Customer Q&A

8 questions already asked

Q
Will this work with a aquatic AV radio?
jack  Sep 12, 2023
1 answer
A
This Crux HBRHD-61A harness works with compatible Harley Davidson bikes, Jack. This harness can work with almost any radio for powering up and basic function. We cannot confirm functionality of the handlebar audio controls with the Aquatic AV radio as there is no setting specifically for that brand, but there is a setting for "off-brand radios" that could work, we just cannot confirm it with the handlebar controls. Depending on your specific bike you may also need extra install gear, so if you want us to check over your install plans, we would be happy to! Do not hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-324-9695 and a live Advisor can help!

Q
Blue and red lights. What do the lights indicate? It appears that the blue light is lit when the power is on. The red light illuminates when handlebar switches are activated.
steve  Jul 19, 2023

A
That sounds correct to me, Steve. These lights can be used on other CRUX interface models for programming, but you will select the correct radio with the dipswitches on the HBRHD-61A interface. If you are having any function issues, we show that with this interface turning off the bike, unplugging the module, resetting the dipswitches, and resetting the radio then testing again can help!

Q

A
If you purchased this interface from Crutchfield, feel free to contact our Tech Support team. They can walk you through the settings and see if there may be a fix. Our toll-free Tech Support number is printed on your invoice, and is also available under the "My Orders" tab in the "My Account" section of our website. If you did not purchase the unit from Crutchfield, then you may want to contact the manufacturer.

Q
My new head unit has 4 channel output will this control the volume on all 4 channels or only on the factory 2 channels?
ruffie  Jan 19, 2021
1 answer
A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
Is this adapter plug n play? Is it compatible with any head unit?
clinton  Apr 22, 2020
1 answer
A
Not sure if it's compatible with all head units. It worked for the Sony unit I purchased. I think u should ask a Crutchfield advisor. I have a 2002 Electra glide and it is was plug and play. I didn't have to cut or splice any wires and everything works from the original handle bar controls.

Hope all is well. Having issue with the adapter as it doesn't adequately utilize the handlebar controls, some time the volume button does as it should other times changes the channel, any suggestions?

Mine works perfectly. Must be some short in the adapter. Change it out.

Hi there mine does the same thing
roger wayne  Nov 18, 2018
A
I'll be honest, mine does the same thing from time to time. Sometimes it will not respond to commands. I don't know if the radio and the interface get logic locked or there is an actual internal problem with it. But mine does the same thing intermittently
brian  Nov 18, 2018

Check your connection pins make sure they aren't loose and arching off of each other. That would be my only guess

Mine did the same thing I found that if it gets any moisture at all in there it does that. I wrapped mine in plastic and electric tape. It's not full proof however it hasn't done it in a while to me.

The volume should only work on the left side and the channel change button is on the right side you may have a pinched wire somewhere in your handlebars check all your switch controls at the handlebars

Call Crutchfield customer support and tell them what kind of stereo you have. They will advise you to set the push pins in the back of the adapter. Mine did the same thing until I called customer support. I installed a Sony and customer support Walked me thru it. I hope this helps.

changing all stereo system and adding 6.5 speakers in batwing fairing and lower leg fairing and also subwoofers to the saddlebags with amp to speakers in both fairing and also subs with aftermarket stereo full upgrade any help would be grateful ?

If you use the Crux HBRHD-61A you will be able to retain the handle bar functions (they do Chang a bit, you will have volume, change stations, skip songs, mute, change functions) the adapter only has the wiring for the two batwing speakers but you can do like I did and wire the speakers directly from the stereo or amp and only use the adapter for your power and handle bar controls. There are endless options for stereo and speakers but I went with the Sony MEX 100 BT marine receiver. It's got a built in class D amplifier with plenty of power to power some quality speakers. I had some alpine 6.5 in the fairing and Polk Audio DB 652 in my lower fairing. As for the extra amp to power the bag subwoofer there are a ton of options out there.
pete  May 14, 2018

First thing make sure u order the wiring harness so u can control the volume, change tracks etc from the handle bar controls. Second if u install 6.5 inch speakers make sure U get the speaker adapters because the fairing speakers R only 4.5 inch's. Also purchase the compact amp for the speakers b/c then U can mount the amp on top of U R head unit in the fairing. To save space in U R saddle bags. I hope some of this helps. Enter
