About the Cambridge Audio CXA81

Eric A.

An excellent centerpiece for an audiophile-grade system

The Cambridge Audio CXA81 is a great fit for a high-quality two-channel sound system. Its oversized toroidal transformer means it can deliver 80 watts per channel of pure, dynamic power to your speakers. This amp build on the foundation its predecessor — the CXA80 — a Crutchfield customer favourite. The new model adds Bluetooth® with aptX® HD encoding for high-quality music streaming from compatible devices.

A variety of connections

The CXA81 offers a convenient blend of analog and digital connections for your music sources. There are two Toslink optical digital inputs, a coaxial digital input, and a Type-B USB port for connecting a computer. Analog components can be connected to one of four unbalanced stereo RCA inputs or the balanced XLR input. There's a mono subwoofer output, and a stereo RCA line output for passing signal to another amplifier.

Real power for the real world

Cambridge Audio's conservative power rating of 80 watts per channel only tells part of this amp's story. Those watts are generated by a power supply that employs an audiophile-grade toroidal transformer for plenty of steady, low-noise current. The transformer is centrally located inside the chassis to minimize interference with sensitive preamp circuitry, and surrounded by hefty extruded heat sinks for cool, efficient operation. The result is an amp capable of handling the heavy demands of 4-ohm speakers as well as all the dynamic peaks in music that make it sound real.

Product Research

Features

80 Watts x 2 Channel: Rated at 80 watts x 2 channel into 8 ohms (or 120 watts x 2 channel into 4 ohms), the Cambridge Audio CXA81 integrated amplifier is powerful enough to drive some of the most demanding speakers, yet has the nuance and subtlety demanded by modern recordings. The CXA81's class AB amplifier design, along with its centrally mounted oversized toroidal transformer and extruded heatsinks, will reveal spectacular detail in your music.

Oversized Toroidal Transformer: An oversized toroidal transformer gives the CXA81 a muscular 80 watts of power for each channel. Painstaking engineering gives it super-low levels of distortion and supreme electrical efficiency. The result is an amplifier with limitless reserves of power, ready to maximize the dynamic potential of any loudspeakers and able to play at any volume level without stress or distortion.

Symmetrical & Separated Circuitry: The entire internal layout of the CXA81 is designed to minimize left/right crosstalk and provide astonishing stereo separation, thanks to its symmetrical and separated circuit paths. By entirely separating the left and right channel heat sinks, and using symmetrical and separated circuit paths for the two channels, the CXA81 will deliver stunning stereo separation and minimum cross-channel interference with great soundstage performance.

High-Quality Damped Metal Chassis: The Cambridge Audio CXA81 integrated amplifier features a high-quality damped metal chassis, designed to ensure that nothing rattles or interferes with the electronics.

ESS Sabre ES9016 K2M DAC: The CXA81 is designed to bring your music to life, no matter how it’s stored. So it features an entirely new digital board, including the cutting-edge ESS Sabre ES9016 K2M digital-to-analog conver. Which means digital audio files up to a 32-bit/384kHz or DSD256 are brought dramatically to life, with every detail and nuance delivered intact. The CXA81 combines unparalleled accuracy with vivid musicality.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming w/ aptX HD: The CXA81 features built-in Bluetooth 4.2 with support for wireless music streaming (A2DP) and remote control (AVRCP). You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content on your Bluetooth-enabled source device to the integrated amplifier. In addition to support for Bluetooth's standard SBC codec, the CXA81 supports Qualcomm's aptX HD codec that provides much higher-quality sound than previous codec versions (available in a growing number of Android mobile devices and Mac computers). aptX HD preserves sound data through the wireless audio transmission, resulting in a "better-than-CD-quality " (24-bit/48kHz) listening experience.

  • Playback control and song/artist/album information will still need to be done from the Bluetooth source device.
  • Only one device can be paired and connected to the integrated amp at a time.
  • The CXA81 has a Bluetooth wireless range of approximately 32.8 feet.
  • Make sure to connect the included Bluetooth antenna on back of the integrated amp.

USB-B Port: The CXA81's USB-B port allows you to connect your Windows PC Or Mac computer to the integrated amplifier for playback of stored music files (up to 32-bit/384kHz). The CXA81 is both USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) and USB 1.1 (Full-speed) USB port compatible. It should also work with the new USB 3.0 ports where the PC will simply treat the CXA81 as if it were a USB 2.0 or 1.1 device. The CXA81 supports two USB Audio protocols - USB Audio Class 1 (which works over USB 1.1 ports and supports up to 24-bit/96kHz) or USB Audio Class 2 (which requires a USB 2.0 port and can support up to 32-bit/384kHz).

  • Windows OS: With the CXA81 switched to USB Audio Class 1 the CXA81 will work with the native Windows XP, Vista, 7, or 8 Audio 1.0 driver (no need to load any new driver) and accept audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. With the CXA81 switched to USB Audio Class 2, the CXA81 will work with the same Windows operating system, but will also need the Cambridge Audio USB Audio 2.0 Driver to be loaded and can then accept up to 32-bit/384kHz.
  • Mac OS: With the CXA switched to USB Audio 1.0 the CXA will work with the native Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or above Audio 1.0 driver and accept audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. With the CXA switched to USB Audio Class 2 the CXA works with the native Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or above Audio 2.0 driver and can accept audio up to 32-bit/384kHz. No extra drivers are required for either setting.

Notes:

  • Always use a high quality USB connection cable certified as USB High-Speed. USB cable connections longer than 9.8' may result in inconsistent audio performance.
  • The Ground/Lift switch enables the USB interface earth to be disconnected from the CXA81 chassis earth. Disconnecting (lifting) the earth can be useful if electronic hum is heard through the speakers when the USB input is selected. The switch should otherwise be left in the Ground position.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The CXA81 integrated amp features two optical (toslink) inputs and a S/PDIF coaxial (RCA) digital input so you connect all of your digital sources. The two optical digital inputs support 2ch PCM (up to 24-bit/96kHz), while the coaxial digital input supports 2ch PCM (up to 24-bit/192kHz). The digital inputs do not support multichannel formats, such as Dolby Digital or DTS.

Balanced & Unbalanced Audio Inputs: The Cambridge Audio CXA81 integrated amplifier is outfitted with both balanced and unbalanced analog audio connections. The CXA81 integrated amp features four unbalanced stereo RCA and one pair of balanced XLR inputs to connect high-resolution CD and SACD players. XLR is a higher-quality input that can reject noise and interference from equipment with balanced outputs. The CXA81 does not feature a dedicated phono input. If you want to connect a turntable, you'll need a turntable with a built-in phono preamp or an external phono preamp (sold separately - see Accessories Tab).

Outputs: The Cambridge Audio CXA81 integrated amp is outfitted with A-B speaker terminals, a mono-sub output, stereo pre-outs and a headphone jack.

  • A-B Speaker Terminals: The Cambridge Audio CXA81 integrated amplifier is equipped with two sets of gold-plated, binding-post speaker terminals (labeled A and B). The terminals will accept bare wire, spade connectors, single- and dual-banana plugs. (The red and black caps can be removed when using banana plugs.) The use of A and B speaker terminals allow you to hook up speakers in another room. When using a single pair of speakers, use speakers with a nominal impedance of 4 ohms to 8 ohms. When using two pairs of speakers, use only speakers with a minimum nominal impedance of 8 ohms.
  • Subwoofer Output: The CXA81 integrated amp features a mono-subwoofer output for adding a powered subwoofer. To ensure there's no unnecessary high frequency noise affecting the subwoofer, the subwoofer output is filtered at 3kHz. This is high enough to prevent any phase shift associated with the low pass filter affecting what happens below 200Hz. The result is a phase linear subwoofer output signal which is clean and musical.
  • Pre-Outs: The Cambridge Audio CXA81 is equipped with a pair of RCA pre-outs to connect the integrated amp to an external power amplifier.
  • Headphone Jack: The CXA81 integrated amplifier offers a front-panel 3.5mm headphone output to connect a set of headphones for private listening. When headphones are connected, the output to both A/B loudspeakers is muted.

Remote Control: The CXA81 is supplied with an IR remote control that operates this integrated amplifier and other Cambridge Audio CX series components. The remote operates off of three "AAA" batteries (supplied). The CXA81 also features an RS-232C port, a Control Bus In/Out, an IR in, and a Trigger In/Out for custom remote integration.

  • Control Buss In/Out: The Control Bus Input and Output (RCA) allows un-modulated commands from multiroom systems or other components to be received by the amp and loop out to another unit.
  • IR In: The IR input (3.5mm) allows modulated IR commands from an IR repeater or custom install systems to be received by the integrated amplifier.
  • RS-232C Port: The RS-232C port allows you to control the CXA81 from a custom install control system (sold separately).
  • Trigger In/Out: The CXA81's 12V trigger input (3.5mm) can be connected to the trigger control output of home automation equipment to control the power state of the integrated amplifier. The 12V trigger output (3.5mm) can be used to turn on other equipment that has a trigger in.

Auto Power Down: The CXA81 integrated amplifier can be set to automatically go into "Standby mode" if there is no audio signal or operation for approximately 20 minutes.

CAP5 Protection System: Cambridge Audio has developed a proprietary protection system to ensure reliability and a long life for its amplifiers and connected speakers. The CAP5 protection system comprises of five main protection methods -

  • DC Detection: CAP5 offers loudspeaker protection if the output of the amplifier goes to a high constant voltage (DC) because of some internal fault. In this case, the integrated amp will automatically switch off.
  • Over Temperature: CAP5 includes temperature detection which constantly monitors the heat generated by the output transistors. If the monitored temperature reaches a high level, the amplifier will automatically switch into a fault mode and turn off.
  • Overvoltage/Overcurrent: CAP5 offers V/I (voltage/current) protection by constantly monitoring the output transistors to keep them working inside their Safe Operating Area (SOA). The unit will automatically power off during voltage or current protection.
  • Short Circuit: During power up from standby, CAP5 performs a check on the loudspeaker terminals to see if a short across the terminals has been accidentally introduced. If the resistance measured across the loudspeaker terminals is too low the unit will stay in Standby mode until the fault has been removed and Power up is re-attempted.
  • Intelligent Clipping: CAP5 has the ability to detect when the amplifier starts to clip or overdrive at its output, which can damage loudspeakers, and degrade the sound. When clipping is identified, the volume level of the integrated amplifier is automatically reduced.

Q
Will hardwiring my iPhone to the cxa81 provide better sound quality? If so, what is the best way of doing this?
robert  Sep 25, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Robert. Thank you for your question. The USB input on the CXA81 does not support an iPhone. To hardwire your phone, it would have to be the headphone jack out to a left/right RCA cable and into the analog input. In this case you are using the phones digital to analog converter, or if your phone did not have a headphone out, which most Apple phones since iPhone 7 will not, there is an adapter from lightning to 3.5mm that has a tiny DAC chip in. Both options to hardwire the phone would not sound as good as using the Bluetooth chipset, and the ESS Sabre DAC on the CXA81.

Q
do these come with auto voltage. Plan to bring this with me on my work abroad where the voltage is rated at 220-240?
eddie  Feb 13, 2024
1 answer
A
The Cambridge Audio CXA81 is not a switched power unit, Eduardo. For units purchased from Crutchfield meant for the North America market, 120v power is compatible and we cannot guarantee usage with 220-240 volts.

Q
How would this pair with the B&W 600 S3 series?
jon-ee  Aug 28, 2023
1 answer
A
I think they would pair very well, Jon. The sensitivity specs on the S3 models that were recently announced are not listed, but I would imagine they are just as efficient as the S2 lineup and should fall in the similar 30 to 200-watt RMS power handling range. The Cambridge Audio CXA81 delivers 80-watts RMS of clean high-current power and would be an excellent choice to exploit the new titanium dome tweeter on the S3 line! If you are into smooth, detailed sound from your tunes, this combo is a winner!

Q
Can I use the Cambridge CXA 81 as a preamp to two monoblock Bel Canto e.One Ref600 power amps? I know this CXA 81 has an RCA Stereo Output for sure that I can send to a more powerful integrated amp, but this is already an integrated amp and I love the award winning Bel Canto Ref 600 for my Legacy Audio Studio HD speakers. They just don't have the input capabilities of the Cambridge CXA 81.

Will it support the Bose 901 equalizer?
rusty  Jan 27, 2022
2 answers
A
I quickly familiarized myself with the Bose 901 speakers and equalizer before answering. Although I do not have familiarity with that product, the section on compatibility in the 901 manual certainly suggests that there would be no problem in utilizing with the Cambridge CXA81.
jack o  Jan 27, 2022
A
I'm sorry, I am not familiar with the Bose equalizer, but the Cambridge has line-level inputs if that's how an equalizer needs to be connected. Usually higher end components don't use equalizers because it would add something else to the signal path. The reason you get a fine component is so you won't need an equalizer.

without plugging these amps into the speakers that you are using it is hard to tell. The CXA81 was a Integrated amp product of the year. 2021 The CX amp has more power 80 vs 60 amp, it does not have HEOS, or Airplay built in. But the built in DAC in the CX is amazing. ESS Sabre SE9016K2M DAC....Also are you spinning recods, or streaming ? there is no phono amp in the CX . just something else to consider. The blue tooth experience is HD quality and with the right streaming service sounds fantastic. I use Quboz, keep in mind to the Crutchfield team is amazing and very helpful.

Is it possible to utilize the onboard DAC with an iPhone? For instance using an Apple® Lightning® to USB Camera Adapter (USB-A) then a USB-A to USB-B cable? I'd prefer not to use Bluetooth in order to utilize Apple Lossless (ALAC) files. Thanks so much.
jtrdsm  Jan 18, 2022

A
Yes, you can connect an iPhone to the CXA81. I am currently using a Lightning to USB A (camera adapter) and then a USB A to USB B cable. Have been playing 24bit/48 kHz and 24/96 ALAC via Apple Music with this setup - no issues. It did take me a minute to figure out how to switch the amp to USB mode though. You have to press the Bluetooth/USB button until it lights up red. When it is lit blue it is in Bluetooth mode.
scott  Oct 09, 2022
A
I have not tried this, but it may work. Any digital input will use the onboard DAC. Only analog inputs bypass it.

Q
How will this amp pair up to klipsch rp8000's ? Thanks
mike  Dec 01, 2021
3 answers
A
I don't have Klipsch speakers, but rather Polk LSiM 703. The Polks drop down to slightly less than 4 ohms at some frequencies. I've always had plenty of clean distortion free power with this Cambridge Amp. Would get it again.
ronald  Dec 01, 2021
A
Not sure about rp8000s, but it makes my vintage Snells and newer Focal bookshelf speakers sing. Great amp for the $.
steven  Dec 01, 2021

I am running a pair of RP-280F speakers off this integrated amp. Because of the efficiency of these speakers, the 81 is more than capable of powering the setup. If I was listening in a large room, 40%+ volume is more than sufficient. I have rarely used more than 40% volume listening to a CD. That is a characteristic of Klipsch efficiency. Now, because I stream off a laptop often, I send a 50% volume signal to 81 and use the amp's ample power to drive the speakers at a higher volume setting. That mimics a bi-power setup. I should also point out I use a 12 inch sub woofer to separate out the bottom end. To be fair, I could have used a smaller set of speakers but I wanted the ability to break out into a larger listening space. Overall it took a while and several hours to "burn" the speakers in properly. There are so many speaker combinations that could go with this amp. I like Klipsch but once I had them hooked up, I wanted the sub to balance them out for me. Getting that right sound becomes important because the sweet spot is driven entirely by speaker placement and not a non-existent balance control. Also keep in mind, the amp sends a flat frequency signal to the speakers (no bass and treble/midrange frequency adjustments). It's an audiophile thing :) I hope that helps.

Q
Has anyone used this amp to drive a pair of KEF R3 speakers?
eliud  Nov 20, 2021
1 answer
A
I have not driven those speakers but it drives a pair of B&W towers with the same sensitivity rating just fine in a decent sized room. It's a solid amp that in my opinion shouldn't have trouble driving the KEFs.
jeffery  Nov 22, 2021
Q
I stream music primarily from Spotify from my phone. Will this amplifier handle this or should I also get the Cambridge Audio CXN V2 network audio streamer. Will there be a noticeable improvement in sound?
tom  Oct 18, 2021
6 answers
A
There is an insightful video by John Darko regarding the specific combination of the CXN V2 with the CXA81. Consequently, I made a subsequent purchase of the CXN. As I see it, I've committed to these components (and a pair of KEF R3 speakers); I'd feel perpetually annoyed by the thought of settling for a sub-optimal experience at this point. And, oh yes, I've signed up for Tidal. YOLO
eliud  Nov 20, 2021
A
I use a couple of iPhones and an iPod as music sources with the Cambridge Audio CXA81, BUT I don't stream the audio; I use a cable to connect the devices with the CXA81. Cleaner audio? Maybe.
john  Oct 23, 2021
A
You can stream right to the CXA81 using the bluetooth connection. It sounds fine but if you want better sound get the CXN streamer. The dual Wolfson dacs in the CXN sound much better than the single Sabre dac in the CXA81. The streamer uses WiFi or an Ethernet connection so your phone is only a remote conrtrol. The best sound comes from connecting the CXN to the CXA81 using balanced XLR connections. Using the CXN gives you an open airiness and a wider and deeper sound stage with pinpoint imaging.
wesley  Oct 21, 2021
A
The amp is bluetooth enabled, but it is not a streamer. You will need another device to stream to the amp.
steven  Oct 20, 2021
A
I stream using Tidal from my phone and ipad directly to the receiver, and the sound is good - better than I had expected. If I use a cable to tether my phone directly into the digital port on the unit, the sound is even better. I've never tried the CXN V2 network streamer, so I am not sure if the sound would be better from that or not.
robert  Oct 20, 2021
A
The amp will allow you to stream music from your device via a blue tooth connection. There is a small antenna in the back to enhance the connection. I stream from Tidal. Very easy to set up and operate. Love it!

Does this amp have any left/right balance control?

Separate, symmetrical left and right channels are carefully engineered to deliver incredible sound-staging i want to say no. for there is no nob or controler to do such. The statement above is from the product feature list. i agree with the statement. The DAC in this amp is fantastic, and delivers music incredibly will. The DAC is this amp is better than a nuch more expensise amp that i purchased previously. beautiful amp creates amazing sound.

Q
Can this Cambridge Audio CXA81 amp drive KLH Model 5 speakers with their 6 ohm impedance and 90.5 sensitivity reasonably well?
peter  Aug 26, 2021
2 answers
A
For medium level listening, the CXA81 will deliver beautiful sound, great DAC in the system, depends on the power output of those JBLs too. i found that at higher volumes i wanted more power, i run a pair of B&W CM 5's with 88 db an 8ohm /120 watt max... i went to an amp with 200watt output, mid to higher volumes sound is amazing. At the time that i brough my 200 watt amp if the EVO 75 or 150 were available, i would have tackled one of those. Better power updated DAC.

I use an elac ub5 2nd gen with a rel sub. The kef ls 50 meta good option also. Try and listen before you commit to a speaker. Lots of options lots of opinions you are they only one that can decide what sounds best to your ears.

I got a new pair of Polk LSiM 703 at the same time. This speaker is no longer made, but can still be found at a few places. I listen to a variety of music genres also and really like these speakers. Search the net to find some reviews.

I use a pair of Warfedale Diamond 225 speakers and they do a wonderful job with jazz of all styles. The 225s are a warm sounding speaker which works well with jazz. They aren't made anymore but in the $1000 range Warfedale Evo 4.1 or 4.2 would be a great choice as would be the Dyneaudio Emit 20. If you like a brighter treble B&W 606 or Focal 806 would be good choices

I would recommend the KEF LS50. That's what I have in my office and they pair very well with the CXA81. I would also highly recommend the Cambridge CXN to go with the CXA81 for network streaming, internet radio, and TIDAL, although the bluetooth function on the CXA81 seems to work well.

Hi all. Is the Bluetooth in this unit transmit and as well as receive? Thank you!

A blue tooth connection is a handshake connection so to have that the CX transmitts a signal to capture a device that is looking for it. Like a iPhone or another device that wants to send music to the CX. Bluetooth playing of Hi Res files on the CX is awesome. You get amazing soundstage and instrumental reproduction. Great amp. Great sound.

Bluetooth as a protocol is always bidirectional. But what you are asking might be a different question. This unit is a Bluetooth client, as in it can receive data (music) and playback. This is not a BT server. For e.g. you cannot connect a CD plaer to this amp and expect to broadcast that music via the amplifier's BT feature.
krishnakumar  Jul 02, 2021
A
Pretty sure it only takes an input signal. The amp is a pretty basic power amp to provide power to unpowered speakers. I don't think there is anyway that the power output could be handled on a wireless signal. I also checked the manual which makes no mention of Bluetooth output.

Will the internal DAC transmit MQA?
daren  Mar 18, 2021
1 answer
A
Ok, thanks for the question, I had no idea about what a MQA is . Master Quality Authenticated. Learned a lot. According to the group in the link provided, The Cambridge DAC will utilize/interpret a MQA file, but under integrated amps they are not listed. If the same chips That are in the CXA 81 as a cambridge DAC then yes, it would. I will tell you this, The DAC in the CXA 81 is amazing, the playback on Hi Res files is beautiful, depth, accuracy spacing and precise delivery is terrific. I found Hi Res played back better than expected. Link about MQA Google MQA. List of compatible devices can be found in the definition. This is a great amp, if in doubt, you have 60 days to figure it out at at home. Good luck. Happy listening.

I tried connecting a turntable (with preamp) to the A1 inputs as I had other components connected to the other three RCA inputs. It didn't work. Any ideas about why not? For now I am using the A2 inputs that I was using for the DVD player. What's A1 for?

I found the answer to my own question in the online manual. The button for A1 on the front panel toggles between the balanced and the unbalanced A1 inputs (the color blue lights for the unbalanced input). Not intuitive, but at least the problem is solved.

According to the Cambridge website a preamp will be necessary. Since most of my old LP records sound like bowls of soaking rice crispies, I haven't played them in decades. I bought the CXA81 knowing the above, and am glad that I did. It's what is called, "a nice unit". Matt Hannon

It doesn't have a phono input. You would need to get a separate phono preamp.

Use one of the analog channels. (I have my turntable hooked to A3). It sounds great. But keep in ming that you will need to ensure that the turntable has a pre-AMP either built into the turntable or as an add-on purchased separately prior to hooking into the amp, due to the weak signal generated by phonograph cartridges.

No. I think Cambridge must assume if you're spending $1200+ for your amplifier, you're gonna spend a good amount on a good pair of speakers such that you wouldn't need to increase the bass and/or treble. kumar  Oct 28, 2020

No, it does not have those controls. I noted that before purchase but since i do not generally alter from mid-settings on those controls when present, their absence did not affect my choice. I find the absence of a balance a bit more of a problem, since changing speaker position relative to where I sit in a room (or changing where i sit) is the only solution to that problem. Despite that, I am still quite pleased with the purchase.

The CXA81 does not have WiFi. I have an older laptop that was not being used and is now my streaming device. It can send to the CXA81 via bluetooth or USB. I use bluetooth so I can keep the laptop near my preferred seat and search for the next track or album while listening to great music.
joe  Nov 04, 2020
A
You can send music to CXA81 wirelessly from another device (iphone, PC etc) via Bluetooth. But it doesn't have it's own wifi streaming capabilities built in. For that you need a separate streamer, such as Cambridge Audio's CXN2, which is highly regarded.
oliver  Jul 01, 2020
A
This amplifier has a Bluetooth aptX HD built in but no wi-fi capability. That is, you can stream music via Bluetooth but not wi-fi. If you want to stream music via wi-fi, you should consider pairing with a network streamer like the Cambridge Audio CXN V2 which is part of the CX range.

Bluetooth yes WiFi no. You want WiFi you have to get a streamer. Most streamers have tidal, Spotify etc and internet radio.
steven  Jun 29, 2020

Dude, no direct wi fi connection on this device,You can connect from a laptop connected to wi -fi with a cable connection to the receiver. [provided in the box] Bluetooth is the path to excellent sound, the receiver has the qualcom aptx HD BT in it, and it is amazing to listen to. it will make you want to throw away any and all CD's in the home. I use Qobuz for HR streaming. You just need to figure out what device you are going to stream from, iPhone [which works great] tablet or laptop. As you know all these devices connect to the home wi-fi, then connect BT to the receiver. The DAC in the system is fantastic, sound alignment is fantastic. Another great feature, if you crash during a session, it automatically shuts down after 20 minutes on no activity. Beautiful piece of electronics, great value. 60 days to figure it out it too. The Crutchfield team is amazing to work with too.Have fun and great listening.

Q
What type of usb connection is that on the back?
richard  May 31, 2020
2 answers
A
That is USB-B connection. It's used to create a direct connection from a laptop or a computer to the CX. The CX then decodes the signal with its DAC and amplifies it. When using good software on your computer (J River Media, MusicBee) that is capable of Asynchronous connection, it provides the cleanest, best way to listen to digital music. You will be using the CX's DAC which is superior to anything on a computer, and most low to mid level standalone DACs.

The speaker's binding post on the back of the unit looks to be cupped. Will I have problems connecting my speaker cable flat spades to it?
jimmy  May 06, 2020

In my opinion, the binding posts are MUCH better suited for banana plugs. You may be able to snug spades, but the connection will not be optimal. Love this amp, btw, its everything Crutchfield touts!

The posts unscrew, so you should be good. There is a tab in the center of them that comes off and on for banana plugs. That is probably why it looks cupped in the photo.

Can I bi amp my speakers using the second set of speaker posts?
mattk  Jan 16, 2020

A
The amplifier only has two output stages, left and right. Both speakers a and b are each tied to the same output stage of the amplifier. So no you cannot bi_amp . If you meant bi - wire then yes you can bi_wire, but be careful with the impedance of the drivers as the will be in parallel and the amp is only rated at 4 ohm minimum.

No, the second posts are merely B (A/B setup). So effectively you can bi-wire, but not bi-amp
