I like this product a lot and wouId recommend it to someone. However, I wish it were a bit cheaper. For just a little bit more money, you can get a new head unit that has USB and AUX connections. On the brighter side of things, this does charge your iphone or ipod so you are saving $30 that you would have to spend on a charger if you just connected through AUX connection.
I bought this product to use with a brand new iPhone 4. I did the installation myself and it took me about 30-45 minutes. It was very easy for my 2005 Toyota Camry.
The main reason I got this product was because I just got an Iphone and wanted a way to listen to the music in my car. However my car only has the stock CD player and I didn't want to put a new head unit in it. I looked into just getting an FM transmitter but kept reading bad reviews and decided to steer clear of that route. This was my next option and I'm glad I took it. This product does really well for me. The station I use is 88.7 and it is completely shut off when I plug my iphone in. The sound is not cd quality but close to it. I can equate the sound quality to a perfectly clear local radio station. With this product, I don't have to spend time searching channels and I never have had to fight static yet.
I also bought the open box item. It was perfect condition and worked fine as well as the same 1 year warranty. Got the product delivered to me in 2 days flat.

I can no longer recommend the Alpine DPR-RDS1. The first one I got lasted a month and then stopped playing sound. The RDS still showed the song title but I had no audio. Crutchfield on the other hand is AWESOME. They exchanged it under warranty without a problem. So I installed my 2nd unit. The 2nd one worked great for 2 months and than.... "Silence". The same thing happened again. This time I had to go through Alpine to get it replaced. As soon as I get it my 3rd new unit back from them I plan on selling it and hopefully it works better in someone else's car. I've lost faith in the Alpine name after this purchase.

The Alpine DPR-RDS1 does a nice job of connecting my Ipods to the factory stereo. Porsche with the Bose sound system uses a MOST fiber optic system which complicates the installation of replacement head units so this is a nice way to accomplish the Ipod connection. I did find, however, that my Classic 160GB Ipod does not provide the RDS information to the factory radio so I only see "ATTACHED" on the display. When I connect an Ipod Nano, the display shows the song titles. The literature does not specify which Ipods work with RDS and which do not. When placing the order, Crutchfield's personnel told me which antenna connectors were required which made the installation easy.

I love it. Hands down the best wired FM module for the Iphone. I was ready to drive off a bridge listening to regular radio w/ commercials but I wasn't ready to replace my whole factory stereo. This unit provided the perfect way of listening to my Iphone 4 through my factory stereo. It automatically switches on and off so there's no need to drill a hole and add a switch to your dash like other units. I had a radio station on each of the 4 frequencies it offers but this unit completely blocked the station to allow me to only hear my Iphone music and it doesn't affect other stations it's not programmed for. It plays my music, it charges my Iphone and it's made by a brand you can trust. Well worth all 5 stars.

Radio interference a problem |

I installed the DPR-RDS1 in my first generation Toyota Prius. This was a bit difficult to do since Crutchfield did not have an installation guide for this vehicle and I have not done much of this type of thing before. I found information on the internet to remove the dashboard and I found a wiring diagram and installed it successfully. Crutchfield tech support was excellent as well. The sound is very good at times but unfortunately there is occasional static which ranges from mild to unacceptable on the only channel that seems to be free in Seattle (88.7). I have the impression that users in other communities do not have this problem. Overall, the DPR-RDS1 seems to be one of the few choices available for those who have a first generation Prius and who want to play an iPod over the stereo system. The factory radio in these cars cannot really be changed for an aftermarket device with an iPod or Aux connection. I will keep the device. I predict it will work better in rural areas so it should be nice when on road trips.
