Better Looking/Performing than some Factory Units |

This was the first rear entertainment system I've ever purchased, let alone, install it myself. First the speaker upgrade, then the Dynamats all around, then finally, the Rear Entertainment for my children, and I'm one of them! I really did a lot of shopping / researching and finally, decided to go with the Alpine unit, but most importantly, from Crutchfield. I wasn't about to take a gamble with $500 plus electronic item that I'd get shady support where there's a problem.
Now onto the unit itself. Let's first talk about the installation. It was relatively easy because I've dropped the headliner prior and pre-ran all wires, including the direct battery (+), switched +12V, negative door trigger, and the AUX out / video/audio-in. But when I got to the part where I had to mount the units, the 4mm machine screws were too short.. way too short. Alpine, please start including slightly longer mounting screws. Several trips to True Value solved that problem in a jiffy however.
Now for the quality: it's impeccable. Not only it was double boxed from Crutchfield which I expected no less, but the unit itself is meticulously put together. Although I've read some reviews on Amazon buyers that there was issue with audio, I found none! This is why I did not go gray market.. simply did not wanted to take that chance. I was also impressed with the audio quality of the infrared headsets.
Now for the picture: sharp and vibrant. Best LCD I've seen in a mobile setup.

I installed this in my 2009 Subaru Tribeca before an 18 hour trip with a one-year old and a three-year old. It helped! The installation was fairly straightforward and is 100% reversible in this vehicle. The quality of the player seems great. No problems at all.

Pros: Great build quality (headphones too). Looks and sounds great. Very thorough manual.
Cons: Only comes in one color.
After alot of research and I went to many retail store and saw many units with questionable build quality. I never found this unit anywhere but came back to it due to specs and the Alpine name. In over 20 years shopping with Crutchfield I knew I would be taken care of if I didn't like it. It has worked great and keeps the kids quiet. The lights can be set to function with the factory illumination. When the vehicle is turned off the player continues where it left off when the vehicle is restarted. Screen is bright enough to be seen in daylight and doesn't have the glare problems that headrest units have. Video game hookup for long trips is no problem. The pause button mounted in front is a nice touch. It really gets the kids attention quick.

Excellent product, but in a tough environment... |

I actually purchased the first Alpine and had it installed in MI. Everything worked as advertised, but the monitor screen quit working after a tough (HOT, HUMID) 2.5 years in Guam. Keep in mind that the climate here is 80-90 degrees farenheit with 80% humidity year-round. I highly recommend the product, but it's durability is a bit suspect. Buy the extended warranty as I did with this one. I think it will be a good investment if you're in a harsh (very hot, or very cold) environment.

Probably the best overhead DVD player in the marke |

I purchased this for my children so they can be entertained on long trips. Installation was challenging and like the other reviewers, the installation screws were too short (hence 4 stars). Aside from the challenge of install, I'm certain that this is the best product of its kind. The picture quality is simply amazing and the workmanship is solid. The only operational issue is that the sound coming from the FM modulator to my stereo system was "fuzzy". However, this could be due to my vehicle. Also, Alpine provides a hardwire connection cable from the DVD unit to the FM antenna connector on the back of the stereo.
As to Crutchfield's service, I have been a customer for 21 years! The overall value Crutchfield provides is the reason I've been with them this long.
