In-dash navigation/DVD receiver with 30 GB hard drive

Stock Status: Discontinued

Product Code: 130AVICZ2

Description Features Crutchfield Hands-on Research Accessories

Pioneer's AVIC-Z2 navigation receiver features a 30-gigabyte hard drive that stores navigation data and up to 10 gigabytes of music ripped from your CDs. You can command this receiver through its touchscreen controls, and control important navigation functions with your voice. Playback of your DVDs and CDs gives you a complete multimedia centre that fits perfectly in a double-sized dash opening.

Smart, accurate navigation
Pioneer has updated its navigation maps to provide better representations of buildings and landmarks. A split screen with both overhead and 3D map views makes it easy to see upcoming turns, while giving you the big picture for directions down the road. And you can add a compatible tuner and subscribe to XM's NavTraffic service for continuously updated traffic information in many major metropolitan areas. The AVIC-Z2 remembers the roads you travel frequently, and over time suggests roads with which you'll be familiar and comfortable.

An included microphone lets you control many aspects of the navigation system using voice commands. Text-to-speech technology allows the AVIC-Z2 to announce most street names as you're approaching your turn, so you'll know where to turn without having to take your eyes off the road. The advanced program helps the system pronounce many tricky names correctly, instead of phonetically as some systems do.

All that, and music, too
This versatile DVD player reserves up to 10 gigabytes of the hard drive's memory to store music it rips from your standard CDs, plus the MP3 files you've burned on disc. The preloaded Gracenotes® software will even pull up and display the disc, artist, and track names for most CDs. You'll have a virtual jukebox in your dash, loaded with your favourite tunes.

You can also use the 7" screen to watch your favourite DVD videos while you're parked. Connect a rear-seat video screen and wireless headphones, and the folks in back can keep watching while you're on the road. "Tri-Zone" capability means you can listen to one source, like the radio, up front while a movie plays in back and the AVIC-Z2 continues navigating.

XM NavTraffic
Add a compatible XM NavTraffic radio and subscribe to XM's innovative NavTraffic™ service. You'll receive continuously updated traffic information in many major metropolitan areas, including traffic accident alerts, road closure info, plus the average speed of traffic on the roads along the route you're navigating. You can prepare for traffic snags well in advance, and adjust your route accordingly.

Roadside Assistance
Pioneer also offers you a Roadside Assistance package that lets you access emergency contact information by pressing a button. The screen shows your exact location, including latitude and longitude readings, so you'll be able to direct emergency personnel. You also get an offer for a year's worth of free roadside assistance service from a national auto club.

System expansion
Use Pioneer's iPod® interface adapter to play your iPod through the AVIC-Z2, and control it using the touchscreen. You can also add a CD changer or satellite radio to extend your entertainment options. If you have a Bluetooth® cell phone, the optional Bluetooth cell phone adapter lets you make and receive phone calls without taking your eyes off the road to dial.

Great Product! June-04-08
Reviewer: southzone2002 from San Antonio, TX
I've had the unit for about 4 months and really enjoy it!  Mine is setup with
the backup camera, Navigation System, IPOD, XM Radio, XM Traffic, and rear
DVD.

I've become spoiled using the Navigation System's different features.  The
POI Phone Numbers have been helpful when I travel as I'm able to contact
businesses (eateries/hotels)  to place orders or reservations.  Although it's
not perfect, the navigation system is very helpful keeping me on track.

XM Traffic has been very helpful as it has helped me re-route my course
when approaching traffic bottle-necks.

The back-up camera is a nice feature as it turns on as soon as I put my
truck in reverse.

My only complaint is the inability to remove CD's previously copied to the
harddrive.  When I first had the unit installed, I had a handful of my wife's
cd's in my truck and I mistakenly added them to my library.  It's not a big
deal as the harddrive is pretty large but I'd like to remove them to stop
catching grief from my friends!  Ha!

I've read the previous reviews and can't say that I've had any of the similar
complaints.   The unit does take about 15 seconds to boot-up but who
doesn't have 15 seconds to spare.

I would definitely recommend the unit to those who can afford it!

Bad Head Unit January-17-08
Reviewer: Mark from Riverside CA,
This has terrible voice recognition. It doesn't understand the difference between phone and home. It doesn't understand anything I ask it. My stock unit had more power than this. The voice talks to you like you are a little kid. When you burn your cds into the harddrive it will sound different, Pioneer says this has to  do with the recording technology. When the system is turned on it takes 10 to 15 secs to boot up and during that time you can't do anything but wait. I was very disapointed in this unit. I thought Pioneer could have done better, this being the second model they should have improved it.

For a unit of this cost level I expect much more. The "features" really don't justify the cost, especially since several features don't really live up to the expectations.
1. burning cd's to the hard drive is simple enough but Gracenote didn't have information for about 70% of the ones I ripped to it. That means most of my music is titled something like "07/12/13 3:45" which corresponds to the date/time I ripped it,,,,not very helpful.
2. The very first time I used the NAV it told me to travel about 25 miles out of my way instead of using a direct (and much faster) route that has been there for over 30 years. It repeated this mistake several times before it finally decided I could use a more direct route (but still not the most direct or fastest).

I could give up the hard drive in an instant since I usually listen to XM anyway and the NAV system in my Kenwood really blows this one away for about $400 less.

Decent unit but could be easily improved October-19-07
Reviewer: Kevin from Tualatin, OR
The good:
Great graphics, loaded with features, pretty easy to use.

The bad:
- Sometimes the screen goes blank and the only way to get it back is to turn off the car.
- iPod interface is SLOW with no alpha lookup - BIG GLITCH!  And scrolling is SLOW.
- GPS is off when you first get going - it shows that I'm in the middle of a field when I leave from home.  It takes a bit for the GPS to find the unit.  I didn't experience this with my last NAV system.
- Bluetooth interface is ok but could be improved.  So far I haven't found how to remove a device previously paired.

Overall I like the unit.  I hope Pioneer updates the software.  The previous review that stated you can't change music selections while moving is wrong - you can change radio stations, iPod selections/playlists.

Some what satisfied October-10-07
Reviewer: Libra42 from Washington, DC
Before I get started, let me first say that when this system is working, its a very nice piece of equipment.  However, I purchased my system back in July of 2007 and since then my system almost on a regular basis has had its screen lock up to the point that the reset button does not work.  As a matter of fact it seems that the reset button only causes the system to further lock up.  I recently took a trip and this happens, I hit the reset button it seems 10 or more times just to get the system to work.  Of course, I had to customize everything all over again.  As far as the jukebox that you can create, its not bad, I just wish that I could edit albums and "my favorite" catagories in order to name albums that the system is not able to identify.  The navigation system however, is on point.
