I have had this unit for a little over a year now and, if anything, I appreciate it even more the longer I use it. Sure, I suppose one could nitpick anything to death, even the costliest units. This was my very first install of anything to do with car audio. I installed this along with four Infinity Reference full range speakers and Infinity Basslink II POWERED SUBWOOFER with expansion module (4-channel amp) in my 2005 sATURN iON-1. Thanks to Crutchfield, it all went great. The Pioneer DEH-P3900MP is a rock solid, clean & powerful head unit. It plays all my CD's without a hitch. Yes, the volume knob can be a bit sensitive but, I would refer to it as major problem. And I happen to think the blue light sets it off nicely. Steve

I purchased this unit in September of 2008 and had major problems with it. I cannot recommend this product to anyone. Here is my list of issues:
1. Fails to read/play many of my CDs, both commercially stamped and burned CD-Rs. The problems (clicking, skipping, distortion, error 30) are especially common on tracks past #4 or #5. 2. Radio reception is very poor for both AM and FM. 3. Audio through the AUX input sounds muffled and lifeless.
To be fair, when the untit does work, the sound is better than that of the factory receiver. The MP3 functionality is good also.

i bought this unit as a replacement for my sony unit, which had a motorized faceplate that decided to stop working. i also had the factory head unit installed for a while and that stopped working for some reason, so i had to replace it. i always liked pioneer, and have one in my 94 ranger, so i decided to get one for my 2002 protege as well. i picked this one out for the price and the functionality of the unit. it has awesome sound, alot of cool ways to tune it, and i have a great sounding system now. lots of power when paired to my alpine speakers and 1100 watt amp with 3 12's. it actually made my trunk open at one point but sounded clear as a bell.
my only suffice is i cannot for the life of me figure out how to set the clock. the instructions are clear but do not work. also, the volume knob is hard to turn, but i can deal with it.
excellent deal for the money
