Good things come in small packages
The Sony Mobile ES people wanted to show off their latest products in a different way — they packed impressively huge audio/video systems into seven Ford Focus vehicles, painted them neon green, and sent them out on a nationwide promotional tour. We had a chance to check out the installation thoroughly when a Sony Xplod 2000 Focus made a stop here at Crutchfield, and this is one small package that's packed with cool stuff!

Up front, the roof-mounted RM-XM10B wired remote control runs the system, while the dash-mounted XTL-750W video monitor keeps you informed on any system status changes. The CDX-T68X 6-disc CD changer (mounted in the glove compartment) and the MDX-65 6-disc MiniDisc changer (mounted behind the seats, next to the nitrous oxide bottle) provide long-playing digital entertainment.

The DVP-F5 DVD player stands ready to provide movie magic through the front and rear video screens. The XT-40V TV tuner under the seat offers first-rate television reception and acts as a source selector (CD, MD, DVD, AM/FM), displaying system status on the video monitors.

Fourteen speakers and eight subwoofers
The XS-HF58 and XS-HF78 component systems are mounted in each of the doors — for a total of two 1" magnesium-alloy tweeters, two 5-1/4" magnesium-alloy woofers, and two 6-1/2" magnesium-alloy woofers per door. An array of four XS-L1255G 12" woofers face forward, blasting out skull-crushing bass from a beautifully-made fiberglass enclosure.

Since the Focus is a demo vehicle, the rear hatch opens to reveal a console containing the CDX-CA760X CD receiver, an XTL-750W video monitor, a pair of XS-V1655G 3-way 6-1/2" speakers (driven by the receiver), and four more XS-L1255G 12" woofers facing the rear. The CD receiver can be controlled by the driver's seat wired remote or by the its own control panel and wireless remote.

3000 watts RMS of Sony power
A total of six amplifiers mounted on the rear side walls pump out 3000 watts RMS to the speaker array. Four XM-6001GXD Class D mono subwoofer amplifiers (600 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms) send 300 watts to each of the eight subwoofers, while two XM-1004GX 4-channel amps (75 watts RMS x 4) drive the door-mounted components.

The installation work on the Focus is stunning, as is the sound quality and sheer power of the Sony ES system. If you have the chance to check out one of these neon-green beauties, take it! You will be impressed.

Neon green dream: Sony's 2000 Ford Focus ZX3.

The Sony Mobile ES XS-HF58 5-1/4" and XS-HF78 6-1/2" component systems rock the Focus's door panels with the precision sound of magnesium-alloy woofers and tweeters.

The Mobile ES DVP-F5 DVD player (in front of the gear shift) supplies video for the dash-mounted XTL-750W monitor. The CDX-T68X 6-disc CD changer fits neatly into the glove compartment.

With the seats tilted forward, you can see Sony's MDX-65 6-disc MiniDisc changer installed in front of the nitrous container. The Mobile ES XT40V TV tuner (under the passenger seat) offers top-notch UHF/VHF reception and audio/video source switching.

Instant back massage! Four Mobile ES XS-L1255G 12" subwoofers deliver awesome bass to the front of the Focus from the beautifully-installed fiberglass enclosure.

The rear-facing part of the system consists of the CDX-CA760X CD receiver, a pair of XS-V1655G 6-1/2" 3-way speakers, and a second XTL-750W monitor, allowing onlookers to enjoy the show. Four more XS-L1255G 12" subwoofers supply bass to the rear, while six Xplod ES amps send 3000 watts RMS to a total of 22 speakers.

@Wellington White from Warsaw, you must have known my brother Rich Sander who was a designer on this car as well. I drove it a few times to competitions on the east coast and took it to Carlisle when I worked for Sony.

Wow. Great to see it again. I was the project manager and builder of that car. We built 11 total cars for Sony. They flew me out in the spring of 2001 to over see the project. I literally built every mold for the interior that car start to finish. Sony has a great design team, it was really nice to get to know them. Although LaGuardia airport was one scary ride. Both coming and going !!! Then 9-11-2001 hit in the fall. Good to be alive today !! Could have been me. Great project. Great memories.

My dad won this car back in 2008 at Board Stock back when Konocti Harbor was still open here in Kelseyville California. It was a fun car to drive to school (tons of attention) but being a dumb high schooler I blew a sub or 2 & smashes the underglow on a couple speed bumps in the schools parking lot. Other then me messing a few things up it was a Fun Little woofer box lol
