Yamaha A-S801

I have two pair of JBL speakers. Each speaker is 6 ohms. Can I run both sets of speaker on A and B setting at the same time on the Yamaha 801 integrated unit?

This amplifier does not feature a pre-out/main-in loop, which would be required to integrate an EQ. The "PB" and "Rec" connections do not function in the manner necessary to connect an EQ. The "Rec" connecctions only output audio that is input into each of the respective "PB" connections.

This amplifier can safely operate at a minimum 4-ohm impedance for each channel (left and right). When running both A and B speakers sets, the terminals are wired internally in parallel. This is to say that the left A and left B terminals are wired in parallel, and the right A and right B channels are wired in parallel. This means that with two sets of 6-ohm speakers, we would be presenting each channel with a 3-ohm load. This will likely cause the amplifier to overheat and could even shorten the lifespan of the amp.

Depending on your specific setup Bob, that could be difficult here. These units no longer have a "tape monitor" function, so if you have a vintage pair of Bose 901's and need to use the specific EQ with the Yamaha you can't. You could use an EQ depending on your source. If you have a component EQ with RCA audio ins and outs, you could run it in line with any source that you wanted to EQ (tape/cd etc.). You will not be able to add an EQ to the unit as a whole, you will need to rely on the front panel tone controls if you do not connect your EQ in the first method I mentioned above. I hope this helps, the Yamaha is a fantastic power unit and you may find you use the EQ less and less!

How is the volume control "steps" when using the remote? In other words on my Peachtree Audio Nova65se the volume goes to high or too low with each press of the remote's volume buttons. Would be great if the 801 (and the other Yamaha AS series integrateds) was more precise. Also can the bass and treble be adjusted via the remote or only from the unit? Thanks!

There are no provisions for mounting rack mount tabs on this Yamaha A-S801 sadly, Mike. You CAN still use this in a rack mount setup, just you would have to use a shelf that can support its almost 30lb weight. If your stack is tight and you don't have a 1U space to spare, you could consider the Rotel I've linked below. You can get a rack mount kit directly from Rotel for these RA-1572 MKII integrated amps. I'm not seeing this question anywhere but I have a large collection of vintage gear...receivers, amps, cassette decks, turntables, RTRs, etc. played through several sets of JBL and Klipsch speakers. So, my ears are used to more vintage sound. That being said, as I get older I am getting tired of maintaining the vintage stuff and would like to get a more modern integrated amp with a remote, Bluetooth capability, etc. I'm really liking the specs on this Yamaha 801. However, I don't want to lose the sound I am used to. Is there anyone else who has made the switch to a modern integrated amp but is still running vintage gear and is pleased with the sound of the Yamaha? I'm used to big (true 100W+) Sansui, Pioneer, Marantz, etc. receivers. Will I be disappointed?

The volume control is indeed very precise on the Yamaha A-S801 that I recently purchased as a Christmas gift. it is paired with Klipsch speakers and Denon CD player - my house is filled with crisp, clean sound. The Bass and Treble can only be adjusted on the unit - I have not changed factory settings - no need!

I am very happy with the 801. It replaced a vintage Marantz 1080 DC driving JBL L-112s. It is not as "Punchy" as the Marantz when played loud and not as "warm" as a classic Marantz but it gives very clean accurate sound. I plan to upgrade it with an A-S 2200 or 3200 in the future but it works so well I am in no rush. I would consider it a best buy for the sound vs cost.

Bill - you and I are perhaps of the same "vintage". Most of my stuff is old as well, from a Revox A77, Nakamichi 680ZX, JBE turntable with Grace tonearm, Apogee Centaur speakers. The speakers are absolutely ruthless when paired with bad gear or source material; this Yamaha, which I admit to being skeptical about, is simply fabulous. Sounds much better than the Adcom gear that preceded it, and is probably as good or better than many more expensive "separates" that I ran for many years. I wouldn't have touched a Yamaha amp a few decades back. Things change. You will be hearing your speakers (which are efficient designs and will play quite loudly with this amp), not the amp. Give it a try - my bet is that it will drastically outperform the receivers you mention..

I too had vintage equipment. Yamaha amp, pre-amp, tuner etc from the early 80's. Got this integrated amp with the CD S300, and the T-S500 tuner. Love the entire set up. Also have a Audio-Technical AT-LP7 turntable all from Crutchfield. It is a great set up. Power is fine for what I'm pushing!

Just add the iblue brand Bluetooth Audio Adapter. It easily connects to the back of the amp and any available a/c outlet. All connection cables are included. Hook up is fast and simple and once linked, just move your phone or tablet bluetooth audio setting to the maximum level. From there use the amp controls to adjust sound.

From what i have researched online, this answer from Charles is incorrect. Your main speakers will continue to get the full range of the audio signal. And the subwoofer will get everything 90hz and below, unless you set the crossover on your sub for less than that. Not the best way to implement things really.

It certainly has all the appearances of aluminum. There is a bit of surface texture that one usually finds on metal rather than plastic. The body of the amplifier is metal and the face appears to be backed by a layer of plastic which shows up at the ends of the front panel. The plastic backing likely gives rigidity to the face panel. I'm pleased with the face panel because it provides good insulation for the contols from the internal mechanism.

There is a loudness knob. Which allows you to adjust. I keep it pretty low which makes the sound richer for sure. This amp. Reminds me of a high end Pre Amp I had in the 90s. It doesn't have all the unneeded (IMO) sound modifications like concert, movie theatre mode etc. I have it hooked up to 2 big Cerwin Vega crate speakers from the 90s. And it powers them beautifully.

The loudness control is continuously variable (not stepped) from "flat" to -30dB. I generally set the loudness to around -12dB for most tracks. My floor standing 3 way's are by no means perfectly flat reference speakers, but it is worth mentioning that in using either CD or USB (with amp's internal DAC) as the source on my specific setup, that the speaker output is anything but flat with the loudness set to flat. Very harsh sounding in the 1 Khz - 5 kHz range. Setting the loudness to around -12dB fixes this on most tracks. Without an RTA to properly analyze the amp's signal output, I'm very cautious in how much I'd criticize it's frequency response. In terms of clarity and noise; I'm satisfied with both at the amp's price point. Keep in mind with this specific amp, a lot of what you're paying for is all of the various inputs, internal preamp, and internal DAC (not the amp itself). All in all, this amp is great for the price point if you plan to use several of it's *integrated* features. I personally do not use the various inputs / DAC often, and in hindsight would've not gone the integrated route; (I would've shelled out more for a separate amp and preamp for a better overall quality output to my speakers). Hope this helps.

If by "stepped" you mean toggle the answer is no...it is a continuous sweep without positions. Like you I have used my amp from 1970 until I mistakenly thought I had blown out a channel..I got the new Yamaha then realized a crossed wire was killing one channel in the old one...I use the Yahamaha for my turn table and cd in the house and the old me on my studio. The Yamaha is very clean and sharp...tight!

It's just perfect for my application: this plus an NAD C 546BEE CD player and Steinhauser HD 800 headphones. You're not just in the front row; the sound is as if you're standing on the conductor's podium. Just breathtaking. My primary music interests are classical and jazz. Hi, I am not familiar with the Yamaha HS7's. I have a pair of Yamaha MSP5 studio monitors, which utilize 1/4" phono plug input (or XLR). My MSP5's are ancient, nearly 20 years old, but it looks like the inputs are the same as the HS7. The A-S801 doesn't have 1/4" or XLR speaker outs. I would guess you could order cables that would do the trick, or make them yourself. I don't know how the results would sound. Short answer: it migh be possible, but it's not natively supported. Jim

I don't think so. Due to the HS7 having its own amplifier and doesn't appear to be defeat able (which would make them passive), these speakers would not be compatible. Also, the rear of the HS7 does not show traditional speaker binding posts, which is how the A-S801 send the audio to connected speakers. I hope this helps, and happy hunting!

Yes: You divide total watts by four. For example, 200 watts by 4 is per channel 50 watts.

I use this amp mainly to stream music through the 32bit DAC on the Yamaha the audioengine b1 Bluetooth receiver has a great DAC also but the optical connection bypasses that so I can use the ESS DAC on the as-801

Next to the optical and coax jack there is a USB jack. This is how I connect my computer to the amp, for streaming purposes. There is also a DC out jack, which according to the manual is used to connect a Yamaha AV accessory. I do not use this amp in an AV setup (it's strictly audio for me) so I'm not sure how it would be used.

I'm not sure what you mean by HDM port. I looked at the back of mine and didn't see anything like that. I have a digital, optical, and a USB B ports. There's also a USB A 5volt 0.5amp out. I'm assuming that what you are talking about is for Blu-ray. Yours must be a little different than mine, because I don't have that port. I'm sorry that I can't be anymore help to you

Yes you can. I have my MacBook Pro going into a Cambridge Audio DAC that has four source input. I go out of the DAC and into my Yamaha EQ-550 and out to the CD input of the amp. All of my input sources plug into the DAC. That way everything goes through the EQ first before going to the amp. I hope this helps.

The ESS 32 bit Sabre DAC is as reviewed,awesome! The audioengine B1 Bluetooth hooked up with optical sounds so much better than the cd that I was amazed!..... of course they're are variables that make a difference example is I'm a premium Spotify member and running 320kbits on streaming quality or newer cds are mixed differently.i havent connect through the usb but I wouldn't expect anything but great warm sound through the ESS as with the Audioengine or better .... hope this helps,Russell

I replaced a 20 year old Yamaha integrated amp in the 5 series when I purchased this one. I am a long-time Yamaha customer. That being said I am delighted with this new component. Beautiful smooth sound and imaging has enhanced my collection of music. I have listened to music that I have heard thousands of times and hearing nuances that I never heard before. I have an as 801 yamaha amp. I previously had an rs700 receiver. As far as the phono feature is concerned, how do(es) the phono specs and performance match up between these 2 products? In your opinion - performance wise, would a phono pre-amp be necessary or advisable for the as 801? This was the case for the rs 700. For that, I got a pro ject pre amp. Tell me what you think, please.

Yes, you can use a two into one connector cable. I'm using the same thing on mine. The signal coming from the amp will split into both channels. I have mine going into a power amp to drive my sub. Works great with no issues. I hope that helps you.

Is there a special software to use with this amp while using a computer?

SO, the Yamaha 801 has a phono input. With MM ( Moving magnet) cartridges, the built in phono-preamp will be enough to get a decent signal. Now, if you wanted an even more improved signal, or had a MC (Moving coil) cartridge , you may want to up grade with a component phono-preamp.

I really can't answer your question regarding the necessity for a phono pre-amp. I think it would need one, but a question easily answered by a tech advisor at Crutchfield. I bought the Yamaha 801 amp for its 4 ohms compatibility to power 301 Buchardt 4 ohm speakers. Of course it got good reviews for the price point. In addition, it is just an old school amp without all the home theater stuff was also a plus.

I have a U-Turn Orbit Plus with a M/M cartridge connected to my 801 phono input. I had to turn off the internal pre-amp for it to even work properly. Way too much signal. I haven't tried it with the internal turntable pre-amp on and plugged into a regular amplifier input but I'm guessing having the pre-amp built into the integrated amp would have a more stable power supply to work with.

Hi, the usb is for pc music file input only. I use a Parasound Zphono/usb box with the Yamaha to connect my turntable to a pc to record to digital.Not as straight forward as I'd like. Versatile unit however. Hope this helps.

The Yamaha A-S801 does still utilize a front knob for input selection. It is adjacent to the volume knob and has a label and light to indicate which source is selected.

When you plug in headphones, does it disable the subwoofer pre-out?

This amplifier doesn't have a built in wifi or Bluetooth receiver. You could hook up an external one through the USB (type B) port or one of the analog ports. Personally I run music into this amplifier from my computer with a USB cable and like the results.

Can't say for the iPhone/iPad. I use a MacBook Pro and an HDMI cable. For sound quality I record from CDs in ALAC then play back through the DAC. For MP3 quality sound, don't bother. Just use headphone jack on the iPhone and use a cable connected to the AUX Input. I do that too.

In order to use the built in DAC a device running windows or mac OS must be used. A driver must be downloaded and you must link to the s801 by USB. If you wanted to control the s801 from your phone, you could hook up your windows or mac OS device by USB and use a music player that can be controlled from your phone.

Hi, the speakers are silenced when one plugs in headphones. As far as I can tell one cant play 'phones with the speakers playing so the sub is quiet. Hope this helps, I love my A-S801!

Is there any difference in sounds between this and the R/S-700 receiver? I see they're both 100x2 and nearly identical in specs.

I've used my phone to connect with this amp. Double RCA in back; into a single plug into your phone jack. I've listened to Amazon music and Sirius radio this way (through the phone apps.). As for the first part of your question, you might want to just consider a media streamer, hooked up to this amp. I have a Cambridge media streamer, and it picks up (through Wi-Fi) music that is physically located in files on my computer. The quality of the music from the media streamer is good. I've never tried to pick up you-tube from the computer with the phone, or the media streamer.

The DACs sound different. I think the as701 has a more smooth sound. The as801 has better dynamics and is little more exciting to listen to. Both are good though, depends what you like. The as801 also has a USB input so you can run high res audio - DSD etc...

What input on the Yamaha 801 (Optical or USB) would work best if I wanted to hook up a Mac mini as a music server? I believe the mac mini has an audio line out that is optical on its headphone jack as well as USB 3 ports. Has anyone tried both to compare?

No. It will not handle a 2ohm load. Mine is driving a pair of Cerwin Vega AT-15's at 4ohms with no problem at all. I don't know of any home audio amps that will handle that heavy of a load. Anything lower than 4 will need a car amplifier.

Is the Yamaha 801 a class D amp?

I would recomend connecting with USB. It will sound better than other connections. Run a USB cable from the Mac mini's USB port to the USB in port on the back of the S-A801. In the mini, open the midi set up select the Yamaha USB ,then got to preferencs >speakers and select Yamaha and you should ready to go. The S-A801 manual has all of this too. Happy Listening

The sound quality is the same. either port can handle Hi_rez files. I've read there can be more issues with USB out than the toslink which is out of the headphone jack. I use the toslink on my iMac and hit sounds superb going into my A-s801. I've used both and neither mattered so I use the toslink to free up a USB port on my iMac. IT's a great amp. You won't regret buying it. It's popular in the audiophile circles I run in if you don't want to spend a fortune on an amp.

I didn't compare both alternatives, but the "classical" and probably most straightforward way to connect both devices is via Toslink and a Mini Toslink Adapter for the Mac Mini headphone jack. A third alternative would be to connect both devices via an Apple TV and AirPlay: The Mac Mini would be connected to the Apple TV via AirPlay, and the Apple TV is connected to the Yamaha 801 via Toslink optical cable. The advantage of this connection method is that you can easily integrate any other Apple device as a music player, e.g. an iPhone, iPod or iPad.

Yes it is. I picked it because a class D amp generates very little heat, and I had to put the amp inside of an enclosed cabinet. I have had it for a year, and I love it. The sound is as good as my class A/B NAD amp that generates so much heat it will cut itself off unless it is in the open.

Hey Chuck , the A-S801 literature does not say but it acts and sounds like an A/B under normal circumstances. I have been running this amp for about ten months and the speakers I have currently are very efficient and present an 8 ohm load and it sounds very good. The A-S801 has some very nice features also. If it's class D I would be surprised, however if you are running speakers with a 4 ohm load am not sure how good it would be. For the money it's a great amp with great features and I would bet it's not class D

I am interested in the 4 ohm rating of the 801 amp, as I am thinking of getting Magnepan 1.7 speakers (4 ohms) with one of their bass panels (also 4 ohms). Magnepan recommends using a high current amp that has a 4 ohm rating close to double the 8 ohm rating. The literature on the 801 amp just says "4 ohm rating" but not how many watts into 4 ohms. Thoughts?

I believe the difference between 4 and 8 ohm output is pretty universal, but i could be wrong... Most companies just list the 8 ohm rating. I don't know the 4 ohm rating either, but I was comparing this amp to a similar peachtree amp which does list both 4 and 8 ohm ratings and the 4 is about 60% stronger. I think you'll be fine with this amp. My speakers are also 4ohm and the sound/power is fantastic. Hope this helps!

Can dial subwoofers be utilized?

We show that the Factory manual from Yamaha also states the 15 1/4" depth too, Davey. What's most likely happening here is that the factory measurements are the case of the unit, and our larger measurement is to the rear of the speaker binding posts, that could explain the extra amount. We can probably trust the 15 1/4" measurement from Yamaha, but make sure to consider the rear connections too when measuring. That's also why we offer our 60 day satisfaction guarantee, just in case! The unit has an automatic power save feature that shuts off the power after 6 hours. The power button stays down and has to be cycled to turn the unit back on. There is a switch on the back of the unit to override the feature if you don't wan't it to go into power save mode.

You have not said what speakers you are driving as different speakers need different amounts of power so tell your Chrutchfield adviser what speakers you want to power and they will know if this will drive them. Should work fine with that speaker. This is a Very Good amp, just take the time to let the amp and the internal DAC burn in, probably about 100 hrs or so. Mine is hooked up to Klipsch Heresy 3's and that combination will melt your ears or put you to sleep. Good Luck

I am not sure where to find a YBA-11 (and I wasn't able to find one when I purchased my AS-801). Since I couldn't get the YBA-11, I purchased a Harman/Kardon BTA10 Bluetooth Adapter as part of my order. I use the BTA10 all the time to play Pandora and other music streaming services through my Yamaha app. It works perfect and am very pleased with my purchase.

Yes you can hook up most CD/DVD players with an optical (TOSLINK) or coaxial cable. I have an old H&K DVD player that i have connected with a coaxial cable that is used for CD playback and it sounds very good. I have also hooked up a Yamaha CD-C600 5-CD disc changer using a TOSLINK cable and it also sounds very good. I like the Yamaha A-S801 so much I bought another one for my bedroom setup. There is a big difference in sound quality when compared to a good AVR like a Denon and it plays very loud and clean with low impedance speakers.

I couldn't say why the YBA11 was discontinued but it's probably due to lack of sales volume. The Harman Kardon BTA10 works fine in it's place.

If the volume knob is at zero (approx. 7 o'clock position) and you press and release the + on the remote, the vol. knob moves to approx. the 8 o'clock position. After that, each press and release will move the knob one small step. A step is probably one minute/step or less. Does the DAC in the A-S801properly decode HDCD format? I have a number of HDCD's that I'd like to play via a transport, connected to the A-S801 via digital out. Will the A-S 801 recognize the HDCD format and decode?

The sound from a turntable is as natural as hearing it live, but there can be noise along with left/right channel audio alignment issue from the needle touching the album. Digital audio does not have that noise and almost always does not have the alignment issue. However, where it is digital, it does not have a smooth sound wave to it and a handful of people have been able to hear that! I don't' think there is a clear winner for overall sound. However I am in the process of setting up a digital library and intend to do so fairly soon. Yes, but for the best results with high res ensure you install the Steinberg USB driver and ASIO 4All. It takes some fiddling with your settings, but for high res you want the raw file streamed directly from the computer to your amplifier, and decoded by the ESS DAC onboard the A-S801 (not you computer's sound card).

With a true 90 watts of rms power per channel in the A-S801, it should be able to power your Polk LSI M703 speakers just fine. The polka are fairly efficient at 88 she sensitivity . You will find they will play quite loud with 10 to 20 watts. Unless ofcourse you are a head banger, then 200 watts per channel won't be enough.

I think they are a great match. This amp has a lot of clean neutral power. Crisp high's and very clean snappy bass, in a good way. The first thing that jumped out when I hooked up this amp was how well it controlled the bass. Strongly recommend this amp. The crutchfield advisor at the time recommended this model over a few higher priced integrated amps they sell.

I know I can hookup my Bose 901 equalizer to an R-S700 (pre-amp out, main in), but the A-S801 doesn't have this coupler. Could I instead use the REC/PB of line 2 or 3 to connect this equalizer? I suppose your assumption is correct. I can't make a statement on the sound quality of the R-S700, but I don't think the weaker connection options of the A-S801 (with regards to your specific needs) will be overcompensated by it's superior overall architecture. I purchased the A-S801 just because of one unique and outstanding feature: it's high quality SABRE digital audio converter (DAC). In combination with it's optical line in, I can stream digital sound right into the A-S801, without pre-converting it to analog signal in a device with a weaker DAC (e. g., like embedded in Apple's lightning docking station). The conversion is performed by the A-S801's DAC - the resulting sound is simply great (as long as the speakers are also high quality).

How can I digitally input music from my Apple device (iPad, iPhone and Macbook) to my Yamaha AS 801?

I haven't used it ,but I believe it is to plug your computer into, to play your audio files.

Hi Joshua, This is how you use your amplifier's Digital Analog Converter (DAC) to play digital music from your computer and convert it to analog. There is an explanation in the owners manual. You do need a USB B male end and USC C male end to plug into your computer just like a printer. You need to download software onto your computer and install. This is explained in the owners manual, and was very easy. This is the reason I bought this amplifier as it had this DAC capability. Hope this was helpful. Mark

Although I haven't used mine, as I understand it, it is for the ability to connect a computer (laptop for example) to the receiver to play back music files on the computer via a USB cable. Also, as I understand it, you cannot just hook up an MP3 player to do this. It must be an actual computer for some reason. Hope this helps.

It's common for DAC's to use this type of connection. AudioQuest makes good ones for this application.

Yamaha has an optional Bluetooth receiver that you can use to stream audio from your iPhone and iPad . For the MacBook connect a USB cable between your MacBooks USB A port to the AS 801's USB B port on the back. Set up the audio connection in the midi and speaker function in the MacBooks preferences. You should be able to stream songs directly from your iTunes library. Oh, make sure iTunes is in session before setting the audio functions. Happy streaming

Use the USB port. Simply connect a AB usb cable from your computer to the AS 801.

Buy Apple TV (3rd generation is fine, 4th not needed), connect the Apple TV to the Yamaha AS 801 via the digital optical connector (Toslink), and stream your music from iPad, iPhone, MacBook to the Apple TV. Set the input selector of the Yamaha AS 801 to "Optical" - that's it.

It has a DAC. All you need is a usb cable (like one that you would use with a printer) and it connects right to the Mac.

The device has no local storage. It is not an external drive/ DAC combo, but rather a receiver with an excellent onboard DAC and the ability to connect to a computer via a USB A- USB B cable. To do this, you simply run the cable from a USB port on your computer (Audirvana Plus has very good instructions for choosing the best USB port for this) to the USB input on the back of the receiver (see photos on Crutchfield's page for the item). It has a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) rating of less than 2%, which is lower than most external DACs and receivers in this price range or higher and sounds phenomenal. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Can mp3, and more specifically, FLAC files be played from my WDTVlive player's optical port to the optical in on this amp?

I'm assuming it would be.. The Sabre DAC is great, I don't see why they would put a separate one in for optical or coaxial. I have this system myself and use the DAC on a daily basis and it has been fantastic. I highly recommend it.

That would be my guess. It's hard to imagine they would use more than one DAC in a stereo receiver, especially when they tout the inclusion of the Sabre so proudly. The receiver sounds phenomenal, regardless, and it's hard to beat the low THD level, for the price. That said, if you want to know for sure, I would simply call Yamaha. They have very friendly, knowledgable support staff.

i currently use an ipod to Dac to receiver for my digital files. How would i be able to play my digital files on this unit. I would prefer something i could plug into the unit and would rather not stream.?Please let me know thanks

I have not tried this, but I don't see why It wouldn't. I am using the optical port for my CD player.

Yes,the A-S801 will decode 2 channel PCM digital audio from this player. Make sure the audio output from the WD TV is set for 2 channel PCM. The A-S801 will not decode and play Dolby digital bit stream surround sound audio.

You could attach an iPod (Lightning) Dock to one of the line in connector pairs of the A-S801. Disadvantage of this solution: The sound is remarkably worse than that of a pure digital transmission, as it seems to me that the DAC embedded in the Apple iPod Dock doesn't have a high-end digital-to-analogue converter chip inside. If you own a newer "lightning" iPod, I don't see any alternative to streaming, because any previously manufactured high-end (hi-fi) DACs are not available with a lightning connector. Therefore, I decided to purchase an Apple TV when I purchased the Yamaha A-S801 Silver. The Apple TV is directly attached to to the optical input connector of the Yamaha A-S801. Music from the iPod is streamed to the AppleTV via AirPlay, which means the sound is transmitted to the AppleTV and from the AppleTV to the Yamaha amplifier purely digital, without any conversion. The final conversion happens inside the A-S801 which has a very good DAC chip inside. I found the sound to betty very good if I use the iPod/AppleTV/Yamaha combination in this way.

I have no idea, i simply use my YAMAHA s 800 to lesson to cd or tape with great speakers. The sound quality is delightful for me !!! ( i'm definitely an old fashion music lover )

By Marantz 200 watt speakers you are referring to Marantz speakers that can "handle" 200 watts, presumably at 8 Ohms impedance (pretty standard). Since the amp has a Speaker A (Left and Right), a Speaker B (Left and Right), and a Speaker A + B (Left and Right on each of two different sets of speakers) you are golden: yes, you can run all 4 speakers provided that you satisfy the following criteria: this amp needs to be configured for either 8 Ohm minimum or a 12 Ohm minimum when running A + B, meaning that you really need to ensure that both your sets of speakers are 8 Ohm impedance minimum. To the best of my knowledge, the 901's are in fact 8 Ohm, but you'll have to check the plaque on your speakers or the owners manual to ensure that the Marantz are 8 Ohm too. You should not (to the best of my knowledge) run an 8 Ohm set of speakers and a 4 Ohm set of speakers on the A + B configuration on this amp.

This amp does not have direct Sonos support, so you would need to use a Sonos product to connect into the system (like the Sonos Connect).

Because Yamaha A-S801 comes with a DAC, I wonder if I can connect a coaxial or optical cable to the back of of Yamaha A-S801 and to a DVD player to play music CDs. Will it sound as good as from a CD player? Which brand of speaker cable do you recommend? Thanks Richie
