Great Product

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I am upgrading from the Yamaha Aventage RX-A3060 as it had internal issues and decided to make the magic smoke. While this receiver was good for its time I can tell definitely tell the RX-A6A is a big step up in technological advancement. The microphone based setup was even easier and more accurate with less hand tweaking needed, the setup took very little time and the clarity of the audio from this receiver is simply amazing. Yamaha has produced another great product and I can see myself enjoying this receiver for years to come.

Pros: Easy Setup, Great Audio Quality, easy to tweak settings, good on screen controls.

Cons: None so far.

Once you get everything dialed in, the picture and sound is amazing. It took a bit of tweaking, even after I ran through YPAO, but that was just to my preference. It is extremely well made and was a big upgrade from my 6 year old Yamaha.

I have had Yamaha receivers since the 80's and loved them. This is a piece of junk due solely to the software. Every new update creates new problems and the customer service is a joke. Avoid Yamaha, they just don't know what they are doing anymore.

Pros: Built well and good features.

Cons: Software, software, software!

Works well, I was concerned that the 50W limit when driving multiple channels wouldn't be enough power but it seems to be OK, still I would have preferred higher power but none is available. Generates significant heat so I'd advise to have it well ventilated, I plan on fan cooling myself. Menu's etc are well thought out and easy to navigate. Only one really annoying thing for me is the backlight for the remote does not have a button to activate it, it's automatic somehow which would be fine but the light times out in about three sec or so requiring yiu to push a button every three sec to keep the backlight lit, that time interval is WAY too short

This powerful receiver has great sound both for music and video sources, especially when Dolby Atmos is available. The video quality on my 4K TV with Dolby Vision is outstanding. The uint is a little complicated but once you get used to it, it is easy to master and change the many settings that are available. The MusicCast app works well and fairly intuitive. Many different sound fields are also available.

Pros: Great Sound Great video quality with Dolby Vision

Cons: Could use a little more information about what sound field is being used

Awesome Home Theater Receiver

This is a powerhouse. I only drive 7.1 but I appreciate the headroom to upgrade later, also to drive a separate zone. Did not have issues with eARC as some others have noted.

Pros: Exceptional power, app is easy to use, sturdy construction, lots of speakers and inputs. More headroom for growth.

Cons: Size - measure twice! It's 45+lbs and taller and deeper than my previous by a considerable amount. It BARELY fits on my rack. When it gets warm the fan is quite loud, though that has only happened for a "how loud does this thing go?" session and it spun down almost immediately when I paused it / turned it back down.

ARC is glitchy. Receiver stop sent in to shop. They replaced a fuse. Audio would always be choppy. Or just stop all together. Decided to try again a year later had audio for 1 hr and now now sound what so ever. Looking at the negative reviews, the problems are all similar. $2500 down the drain! Buyer be ware!

Pros: Don't know never worked

Cons: Never really worked even after getting back for repair shop and spending $80 on new HDMI cables.

Just got this A/V receiver set up and linked with SONOS, a new CD Player and new DVD player. I contacted Crutchfield Tech team twice during the setup and they were awesome. I had everything pretty close to set up properly but they quickly noted a problem that was prohibiting my cable box from working with the new setup. I love this receiver. Replaced my 20 year old Yamaha RX-2500 that died. I think the surround technology is much more defined. I had 2 more B&W surrounds to use as a front presence channel. Now have 9 B&W and my two homebuilt JL audio subs. Everything sounds crystal clear and have not even run the calibration yet, just got the last 2 hooked up. I also like the music cast app to control everything without having to use the remote. Sadly, the app is not compatible with my Yas-209 soundbar, but not a big problem for me. I am also very happy with service and communication from Crutchfield, always have been a solid company.

Easy set up, noticeable sound difference, and something I did not expect - my TV picture quality is better. I had a 12 year old receiver that had done good service, but this is a new ballgame, and I learn something new every day. Everything is way easier to use. Delivery was as promised. The buying process was excellent also. My advisor was Otis, who was extremely knowledgeable and thorough in addition to being great to work with. He even researched the power ratings on my speakers. I would definitely buy from Crutchfield again.

Pros: Sound Picture quality Features Ease of set-up Ease of use Great advisor during buying process

Almost great for whole house applications

Bill from Austin, TX on 7/12/2023

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Great sound, intuitive set up, but a second streamer would make it so much better. I'm using this AV amp to power a 5.1 home theater system in the living room and two other zones. All wired. Unfortunately with only one streamer I can't listen to music in the living room and play a podcast from the AVR at the same time. You can plug in another source (eg an Apple TV) but then you need the tv screen to chose your content (so you must use multiple remotes or apps). It would be great if the AVR had a second or even third streamer so the MusicCast app could "do it all".

Pros: High quality sound. Intuitive set up on screen.

Cons: A second or third streamer would make it a great whole house audio system.

Love the new design face lift. Solid build quality. Replaced a old flagship model that still had fabulous sound till its last day. More complicated than you realize to set up but not big deal plenty of information. Have not used browser to set up yet might be good idea to use it. Have used it only with AI Sound and pure direct which is very good. Still need to get some time in for changing scenes. HDMI much improved like the ease of use with Fire stick remote or satelite, etc big upgrade for us there. Used microphone to tune speaker distances and seems to be fine will check it better in future. Plenty of power and very clean sound coming through my B&W and SVS speakers. Nothing is perfect I do miss being able to use a dial for THX etc etc will figure that out.

Just upgraded to the A6A from A4A as I didn't realize bi-amping would steal ports for surrounds. And the A6A need XLR wires for an external amp as well. Once I figured that out I was golden. The sound is great and I haven't had a chance to dial it in w/YPOW yet. Like many others though, I wish I could access the menu on the receiver instead of tv.

Pros: Plenty of power. Easy install.

Cons: No owners manual and menu is on tv. Had to YouTube to figure out external amps.

Great DSP-A1 Replacement

Joe from Woodstock, GA on 12/28/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

First let me give a sense of where this review is coming from. I purchased the RX-A6A as a replacement for my aging, and failing, DSP-A1 Integrated amplifier. I went with the Aventage line because I prefer a general higher quality (e.g. Sony ES, etc) and this unit meets or exceeds the specs of the DSP-A1. I must say I was surprised at how much lighter this unit is; I presume this is due to the use of digital amplifier stages over the older analog. What it lacks in weight it makes up for with more punch. I was very impressed with the flatter response this offered over my A1. The perception is a cleaner signals that make my efficient Klipsch speakers shine! The addition of the YPAO optimization tools helped reduce the ring from my fairly live family room. I found the YPAO setup to be much easier (automatic) than my trusty old TDS machine. No more tedium of individual speaker EQ and attenuation. Set it and forget it! Thanks Yamaha! Now for the down sides. Right off what no-brain engineer decided it was a good idea to change the spacing on the speaker terminals so tandem banana plugs won't work! I had to order new single plugs to re-connect my speakers! The remote is a UX nightmare with poor grouping of the buttons by function and long scrolling through lists. I will likely recreate my old A1 Remote with a Universal Remote. I am extremely happy with my choice to replace my DSP-A1, and being a receiver I was able to eliminate the old tuner - and get bet

Pros: Zone outputs offer future expansion. Great power for a single unit solution. Excellent build quality. Feature rich.

Cons: Non-standard speaker terminal spacing. Clunky remote User Experience. Musicast App is limited and confusing. Volume control increments should be adjustable (0.5 is too fine)

Circuit Protection Mode/Internal Issues

MFree from Winfield, WV on 12/12/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver in Oct 2020. While I enjoyed the receiver there was an issue with it going into circuit protection mode. Yamaha offered to send me a box to have it sent to sent to an independent repair company. That company sent it back saying they reset it but to check all of my speaker wiring/connections. I've done this replaced all wiring and connections and it worked fine for another month and did this again. Warranty is now 1 day past 2 year warranty and Yamaha no longer will support it nor provide a way to get the unit out of circuit protection mode. Both Yamaha and the independent electronics company agreed it was an internal receiver issue but refuse to repair or provide directions on how to reset the circuit protection. They want me to pay for it to be sent back just to have it reset again and mask the real issue. When it works it's great, but for now it's an expensive brick.

Pros: Great when it works

Cons: Bad Customer Support/Repair @ Yamaha

The a6a is a great receiver. I have it in a 5.1 system expanding to 7.2.2 in the future. Vintage Yamaha m-4 amp running the front left and right speakers. All speakers are Cambridge audio minx 22 sub is HSU vtf-3. The a6a is really powerful, clean, clear. And most importantly it is dead silent between passages ( a over looked property of audio) this is my 3rd Yamaha receiver and every one of them is more impressive than the last. This receiver begs you to continue to turn it up song after song . Movie after movie.

Pros: Future proof. Loves being cranked up.

Cons: Display needs to be larger to be read 12 feet away.

I own 2 Yamaha RX-A6A receivers, 1 Yamaha RX-A8A and 1 Rotel RB-1552 MkII, all from Crutchfield. Buying the RX-A8A was a waste of money compared to combining one RX-A6A ($2,449.95) with the Rotel RB-1552 MkII ($1,399.99) = $3,899.94 Yes, it is $349.99 more than the RX-A8A alone and you need two slots in your stereo cabinet. But WOW!! the difference in sound performance will literally have your ears dancing. The RX-A6A and the RX-A8A have the exactly the same software and the same inputs and outputs. The magnificent stereo balanced XLR FRONT outputs will plug right into the Rotel XLR inputs, with a pair of high quality XLR cables. It even gets better - the Rotel has two left and two right speaker outputs letting you bi-wire your front speakers with ease. FYI: The four speaker outputs on the Rotel are not really for four speakers they are intended for bi-wiring the main front channel speakers. This is the most glorious combination. Your main front channels are getting 130 watts of power and your 9 surround channels are not diluted by the power draw of the front channels, marvelous. If you get a Christmas bonus and you still watch Blu-Rays get the Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K and another pair of XLR cables to go from the Panasonic to the Yamaha's "Audio 4" XLR inputs. Worth every penny.

Pros: Vastly improved sound

Cons: An extra $349.99

Upgraded from RX-V683... The surround sound affect seems more rich and vibrant with this new RX-A6A. More channels so all 9.1 speakers being driven now. New firmware update to 1.73 brings the 4k/120hz and AAL/VRR FUNCTIONALITY. Some things I notice and don't like that has changed with this new model is that the top menu and pop up menu buttons on the remote do not work. The older model that I had allowed me to use one of these buttons to bring up a graphical interface to pick which input and which sound program I wanted to use. This is not available on this newer more expensive better model. Instead you have to use the remote to cycle thru each input source (hdmi, audio, USB, etc) until you get to what you want out it seems that I have to set up a scene for each input to access via hot key number or use the Music cast app. Access to inputs and sound programs is not straightforward in this app. It was much more straightforward and simple when accessible in the remote or in the receiver controller app that they have now retired. Also switching inputs is kind of flaky as the sound or video will stop working and you have to power off the TV and/or receiver before both work. I'm guessing maybe some or all of this will be fixed in the next firmware update.

MusicCast features did not live up to Yamaha's claims

Joanne from Colorado Spgs, CO on 10/22/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

We got this product to act as the head input unit for a multizone system also leveraging a Yamaha XDA-QS5400RK for four additional zones using the MusicCast network. This unit combined with the MusicCast network did not live up to the pre-sales replies from Yamaha. Specifically, the claim of "All inputs" being available to all other devices on the same network is not correct. *ONLY ONE* input from the RX-A6A is available to other devices at a time, and this input must be the one used by either zone 1 or zone 2 of the RX-A6A. When that input is shared with other devices, the procedure is a bit awkward. Rather than just choosing an input from the normal input menu on the remote zone, the user needs to start from the place in the MusicCast software controlling the RX-A6A zone, "link" to the remote zone wanting the same input, then control the volume from yet a third location, that is a submenu under the RX-A6A zone. Yamaha support needs to get their act together so they stop misrepresenting their product and customers can make a more objective decision.

Pros: -Remote zones can get the audio from HDMI inputs, albeit down-converted to a lower resolution. -No obvious annoyances from the class D amplifiers, but sound not fully tested yet

Cons: -Input available to other MusicCast devices is limited to what either zone1 or zone 2 is playing -Content sharing between MusicCast devices is awkward

This past July my RXA2080 quit reproducing Hi Res audio. Thinking I was out of warranty I contacted Crutchfield to ask where to find a repair shop. They promptly informed me I had 4 months of warranty remaining. They gave me Yamaha's number and I contacted them. They were great and enabled me to send the unit back to them the same day. Two weeks later I got my unit back just to find it still was not correct. One phone call to Yamaha and my unit was again sent back to them. Two more weeks and I get it back but still not repaired to my satisfaction. One more call to Yamaha and I was told a manager would contact me. Two days later and I'm informed that they are sorry for all the trouble, I was then told Yamaha would be replacing my unit with their new updated RXA6A, NEW, not even a rebuilt model. A week later I had this tremendous new receiver. It is as good as everything I've read on reviews. I have now had the opportunity to put about 1000 hours on it. My Hi Res disks play thru an Oppo Blu-ray player and PSB Imagine 7.2 speakers. This unit is beyond all my expectations. Not only did Yamaha step up without any argument, the receiver is beyond anything I could have hoped for. Everything Yamaha did to satisfy me was first class. My sincere thanks to Yamaha for all they did. Great company, great people, great product.

Pros: Hard to say anymore then I have!!!

Unit just arrived last week and was easy to set up and with the sound calibration took less than one hour. So far the sound is excellent and is just what I expected for this new Yamaha unit which is a replacement for a 6+ year old one I had.

Pros: Ease of set up

Cons: Heavy for someone who lives alone, needed assistance from my neighbor.

I'm very pleased with this unit. Only have used for two days now but I like it very much. This replaces a twelve year old Yamaha Aventage RX-A2000 that will now move elsewhere. I am glad that I had the prior Yamaha as that experience helped me with setting this unit up and working through menus. I guess I am old school in that I miss solid documentation to have when working with something. Solid meaning paper in hand! The extra abilities of 4k and Atmos were primary drivers in purchasing a new unit. So far loving the sound. I think the version of YPAO is improved over my old unit.

Get this over the Marantz SR6015!

Crutchfield customer from Ohio on 6/23/2022

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Upgrading from a Yamaha RX-V683 I originally purchased a Marantz SR6015. I am using the complete Focal Chora surround sound setup (826-D, 806, and Chora Center) with two JL Audio D110 subwoofers. Listening with the Marantz I thought the sound was good, but I felt like it took a little too much out from the presence range for my tastes and lacked the detail that even my older Yamaha receiver provided. The bass far surpassed my old receiver though. This was my first Marantz product, and I just wasn't digging the "Marantz" sound which seems warmer. I just felt like something was missing. I decided to return the Marantz and purchase the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A6A. I originally held off on buying the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A6A initially because of the missing features that are promised in an update. But what it lacks it makes up for in natural sound and I'm willing to wait. Some think the Chora speakers are too bright or forward, but the Yamaha takes the speakers and makes them shine. Offering great detail without the fatigue. Connectivity is better on the A6A. All ports are HDMI 2.1. In order to get more ports on the Marantz, I had to buy an external switch box (Marantz VS3003 adds three ports). The price of those combined items equaled the price of the Yamaha RX-A6A. You get a more powerful amp as well! I felt the menus on the Marantz were clunky as well. Yamaha is easy to setup and highly configurable with a nice dot matrix LCD on the front.

Pros: Loads of power Neutral sound Great connectivity after the recent update Balanced inputs and outputs Easy to setup but highly configurable.

Cons: This is a chonky boi and might not fit in some setups. Check the measurements compared to other receivers Still missing some features (No VRR)

Excellent does just what I wanted. Matched up well with My Sony A90J which also came from Crutchfield. YPAO kept setting my front and center channels to large which they are not and sound was off. Looking menus and reset those speakers to small and then it sounded great. Learn how to use the menus. Waited for Crutchfield to have in stock as I don't like dealing with the big box local stores. My only issue is the receiver evidently took a pretty good hit in shipping and the mount for one of the antennas was bent on the back panel (took pictures of box and inside. Does not appear to cause any issues

Pros: Gives you lots of control over everything.

Great receiver, tons of options and great features. Inexplicably stopped sending audio signals through all outputs after two weeks of light use in a home. Research points to dead internals, will update after the replacement is received.

Now that I've had a chance to setup and use the RX-a2a and the RX-a4a I can try to justify the extra $700 for the RX-a6a. The truth is that it is hard to do that. The main reasons for wanting the 6 included the extra inputs, the newer audio processor chip and the additional channels. Of these 3 the most important to me is the new audio chip. There is no question in my mind that it is much faster. By that I mean that if you listen to an FM station on a conventional analog radio and tune the same station on the 2, 4 or 6 the delay caused by the digital processing is least on the 6. I' don't think I could honestly tell you which rcvr I was listening to when it comes to just kicking back and cranking the tunes or a movie. I just like the audio modes and the way all 3 models drive my speaker setup. The 6 has a bit more power to play with. The fact that it runs much cooler than the 2 or 4 when pushed is a nice plus. My old Pioneer units all ran much hotter. As a 50 year user of Pioneer amps and AV making the switch to Yamaha was a hard decision. The driving factor was the lack of new models. The one I wanted appeared late in 2019 and then vanished never to be seen again. The Yamaha web setup interface makes it easy to examine and configure everything thus removing the need to struggle with stupid menus. I'd like to see a Windows based application to fully control the unit. The MusicCast app needs work for VoiceOver users on IOS. The scene fu

Pros: Great remote, fantastic audio, lots of input choices runs fairly cool

Great AVR

The RX-A6A allows for full blackout of the display. In this mode it looks just like a power amp. I can listen in a darkened room to my favorite Chopin nocturnes without any light disruptions. The clarity, sound stage and accuracy are outstanding. I consider myself a serious music listener and I also appreciate great sound for movies. I upgraded from a Yamaha RX-A1080 and moved the A1080 into my home office. At first, I did not like the MusicCast app as I favored the original Yamaha AVR Controller app. Now that I have two systems in the house, I can now see the advantages of the MusicCast application. Originally, I would have replaced my dying Yamaha V1800 with the A2080 but there were supply issues, so I got the A1080. Now, 18 months later Crutchfield finally received A6A stock. I had planned on reselling the A1080 but decided to keep it, just could not part with it. Both the A6A and the A1080 are geat systems. I highly recommend the A6A. I tested the A6A with all components of my audio and video system and have not encountered any issues to date. (System: SVS Ultra bookshelf main on Linton Heritage stands, SVS Ultra Center, SVS SB2000 PRO sub, Polk Audio in the wall rear speakers, Technique 1500C turntable, Nvidia Shield, TIVO cable, TIVO OTA, Marantz HD-CD1, Panasonic Blueray DVD, USB thumbdrive with 118 GB of FLAC 5 music, Tidal, Amazon HD, Sirus/XM, extensive classical record collection, CDs - almost every genre)

Pros: Solidly built, great sound separation and depth, looks like a power amp. Very good value compared to the competition at this price point. Crutchfield Sales and Technical Support

Cons: Sometimes I miss the larger display. You have to rely on the Android app versus the remote and the larger display of the prior RX-A1080/A2080 line. MusicCast is just OK with Tidal (but workable), better with Sirus/XM and Amazon HD.

Sounds great but needs better firmware

After getting everything setup and calibrated the RX-A6A sounds fantastic. For stereo I use the balanced L/R outputs to drive a high quality external Power amplifier (350 Watts/channel) and I am very happy with the result. Very much improved over my older Yamaha V-2085 receiver. Dolby Atmos sounds good too but I was getting constant loud pops when starting/stopping/pausing a Blu-ray movie. Luckily new firmware was released a few days after I got the unit and the popping is almost gone (it still happened once with the new firmware). I do not like the display as it is too small and not centered on the unit. Also it makes seeing the speaker configuration difficult. The previous generation Yamaha displays were MUCH better. Fortunately I use the Musicast app on my phone (which is great) to work around this issue. Some features are still missing but I am hoping that these will come with new releases. Also I've had to reboot the unit a few times as it gets locked up occasionally. With more stable and complete firmware this would get 5 stars.

Pros: Great sound. Many features. Multi Zone support. Musicast App makes it easy for family members to operate

Cons: Still has firmware bugs and missing features. Small display

Sound is Phenomenal, took a little time to set up, but the user manual on the website was very helpful. Hooked up to an 82" Samsung 4k through EARC, great picture and sound, Dolby Atmos is excellent on my 5:2:4 set up, 4K HDR is awesome when available. Can't Waite for an 8K TV upgrade. This unit replaced a Yamaha RX-A2050 unit which was a good receiver also.

Pros: Good ergonomics, features, performance, great surround.

Cons: A little complex to set up, a little pricey, but well worth it.

A worthy addition to the Aventage legacy. My third AV receiver in this product line and it's the best. Plenty of power, connections, and flexibility for the most sophisticated systems. This receiver inherited most of the sound fields of prior models with the addition of AI surround. Handles Dolby Atmos very well. Setup was easy after reading the instructions a couple of times. Recommend doing that to save later frustration. YPAO calibration worked well with multiple seating locations. Make sure the room is completely quiet. Still has legacy connections for older equipment, phone, etc. Lighted remote can handle all aspects of operating most of your system. Could have used a larger display to view from a distance but that's a minor quibble.
