Edge-driven tweeter design

Infinity employs an edge-driven design in their soft dome tweeters for a smoother, more open response and minimal distortion at high volume. Prepare for a more clearly defined soundstage as the details in your music come alive.

The included external crossovers are tuned to Infinity's exceptional standards so that you're treated to this system's best possible sound.

Famous Plus One+ technology

This Primus polypropylene woofer delivers solid, punchy bass, thanks to Infinity's proprietary Plus One+ woofer design. Infinity extends the cone right up to the edge of the basket, giving you lots of surface area — and a bigger cone means more bass when your music needs it.

Make the most of your power

Infinity's special "true 4-ohm architecture" uses a low-impedance voice coil to safely draw extra power out of your factory radio, aftermarket stereo, or an external amplifier, so you'll get a stronger clearer sound. Grilles are included.

Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speaker cones offer more surface area than other speakers that fit in the same size opening. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The result is greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Mounting: Infinity markets these speakers as 6-1/2"; they will fit in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings (approximately 5" diameter), but they do not use the standard 6-1/2" speaker bolt pattern. In order to install them in standard 6-1/2" applications you must drill new screw holes. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no bracket is needed. If drilling in the car is not an option, the included brackets can be used, which have standard 6-1/2" mounting holes and the Ford non-symmetric four hole pattern. The brackets also offer several other non-standard hole patterns. When using the brackets the depth becomes 1.798" and the mounting height becomes 0.726". The speakers are easily installed in many standard 4-hole 6-3/4" applications with no modification. Enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

  • I-Mount Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface or flush mounted:
    • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
    • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount housing and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the tweeter is installed in the flush-mount adapter, then into the flush mount housing and inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
  • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
    • Bottom Mount: Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
    • Surface Mount: Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the top of the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
    • Flush Mount: There are two sets of tabs to flush mount the tweeter in the Starfish bracket, yielding different mounting dimensions. The upper tabs mount the tweeter completely below the opening and are glued in place. The lower mounting tabs are screwed in place and result in a mounting height just over 1/3 inch. Once the bracket is mounted, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

Mounting Dimensions:

Cutout Diameter N/A 1.582" N/A N/A 1.508" 2.6"

Crossovers: The crossovers' inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.315" wide. There are two mounting holes in each crossover.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 2-1/8"
  • Height: 1"
  • Depth: 2-5/16"

Impedance: The Primus Series speakers feature 2.7Ω voice coils to compensate for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extract every watt from the factory receiver, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4-ohm speakers). The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers capable of powering a lower impedance load.

Customer Q&A

Q
What is "4 ohm architecture"? JBL makes no reference to it on their site or manual. Most OEM standard model units run 4 ohm speakers, in the description you [Crutchfield] state this 2.7 ohm (and another JBL product's 3 ohm) will work well with a 4 ohm amp/receiver. Then in a tech article, its stated not to run speakers with a lower resistance than the supply (amp/head). So which is it? I'll eventually add an amp, but for now just want something to replace blown speakers that are decent enough to handle more power down the road.

Hi there, I installed these speakers in a Dodge Ram with an original infinity OEM amp which was 2 ohm and they sounded good. Ive never connected a 4 ohm amp to a 2 ohm speaker just because it was always a no-no... however it may still sound ok...I think a 2 ohm amp would be better though as it could handle the current better. With a 4 ohm amp, for it to be efficient, it has to see 4 ohms... with a 2 ohm speaker, you cut power in half.

Q
Does anyone know if this 6.5 infinity component set can be bi-amped?? Instead of using the crossover that's provided? Also it says 4 ohm architecture but it's says 2.7 ohms??

Is the 80 watts rms per side or per pair?

It's per side.

Per side...
christopher way  Sep 15, 2020
A
That is per speaker, but it is also per pair- Its not like that number doubles if you have two speakers, if that is what you are asking.
christopher  Sep 14, 2020
Q
Would this be okay as an upgrade from stock, even if I'm not using an amp with them? Should I shop for something more sensitive or lower RMS?

I would not hesitate at all buying these speakers . I replaced my stock speakers with these speakers and am very satisfied with their rich sound. I have a stock radio/cd and no other amp . The sound is amazing!

I am running mine powered by a Kenwood DNX996XR instead of the factory radio, with no amp. They sound awesome and handle the Kenwood very well. Although I am not using the supplied crossovers. I wired the tweeters to a front channel and can control them via the Kenwoods built in adjustable crossovers.
andrew  Jul 30, 2020
A
Absolutely. They are made for that purpose. I added them to my stock stereo system in my 2016 Honda CRV and I am very happy with the sound.

The Infinity website says this will fit a 2018 tundra JBL system. however you say it does not. which statement is true? any help would be appreciated.

By the measurements we took when researching your vehicle, and the measurements we took when researching those speakers, Those infinity's are 0.249" too tall and will hit the door panel.
