About the Kenwood DRV-N520 Drive Recorder

Alexander H.

Your Kenwood receiver's dash partner

Add this DRV-N520 dash camera and drive assistant to select Kenwood multimedia receivers to enhance your driving experience. When it's connected to the receiver's front camera input, you'll gain an in-dash view of whatever this dash cam records, plus departure delay warnings, collision alerts, and more.

Kenwood DRV-520

When connected to select Kenwood touchscreen receivers, you'll receive warnings like this to help you drive more safely.

Kenwood keeps you alert

This dash cam provides two key features that'll help you drive more safely:

  • Collision Avoidance Warning provides you with audible alerts if you're travelling too close to the vehicle ahead of you.

  • Departure Delay Warning gives you a heads up when you're stopped if traffic in front of you has started to move again.

Everything you'd expect from a dash cam

The Kenwood DRV-N520's fully automated camera will start recording once the engine is turned on and stop when the engine is turned off. When you're driving, this camera records a high-resolution, Full HD, wide-angle view of the road to keep a record of anything unexpected. High Dynamic Range technology compensates for sudden lighting changes to ensure you're always recording the best picture possible.

If you're in accident...

If you're involved in an accident, this device's built-in G-Sensor will detect hard braking or a collision, then save the last, current, and next recordings, preserving a complete record of the event. Video is saved to the included microSD™ card for playback, using the Kenwood Drive Reviewer PC software. You can also set the DRV-N520 to record when the ignition is off — a built-in motion sensor will activate when triggered and record whatever (or whomever) is on the other side of the windshield.

Compatible receivers

The DRV-N520 dash cam is compatible with select Kenwood DNR, DNX, DMX, and DDX Series navigation, digital multimedia, and DVD receivers. For a complete listing of compatible radios, see Details.

Note: HD transmission occurs through a composite video connection utilizing HD-TVi technology with only compatible Kenwood receivers.

CMOS Image Sensor & Wide Angle Lens: The Kenwood DRV-N520 dashboard camera utilizes a 1/3" color CMOS image sensor with 3M pixels (2304 x 1296) and a wide-angle lens with a 117° (horizontal) x 63° (vertical) viewing angle.

HDR Technology: Thanks to HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, the Kenwood DRV-N520 can record video at dark and bright locations, without underexposing or overexposing the image.

Video & Photo Recording: The Kenwood DRV-N520 dashboard camera records high-resolution smooth videos, while keeping the file size small with H.264 technology. You can select between three video resolution modes - 3M (2304x1296), FHD (1920x1080), or HD (1280x720). Video recording is done at 27 fps (frames per second) to create a natural and progressively smooth video. You can also capture a still-image photo during Continuous recording mode. Still images are captured in JPEG with a maximum of 2304 x 1296. Video & photo files are recorded onto a microSD/SDHC memory card. See chart below for Recording Times -

    Recording Size Card Size
    8GB 16GB 32GB
    Video 2304 x 1296 50 minutes 100 minutes 210 minutes
    1920 x 1080 70 minutes 140 minutes 280 minutes
    1280 x 720 100 minutes 200 minutes 400 minutes
    Photo 2304 x 1296 100 files 200 files 400 files

microSD Card Slot: The Kenwood DRV-N520 is fitted with a microSD card slot for the insertion of a microSD or microSDHC memory card (up to 32GB; Class 6-10). Video will be recorded onto your inserted microSD/SDHC memory card. See chart below for Number of Recording Files -

    Recording Mode Card Size
    8GB 16GB 32GB
    Event 5 files 10 files 20 files
    Manual 10 files 20 files 40 files
    Parking 20 files 40 files 80 files

Motion & Collision Detection: With latest motion & collision detection technology and its own internal battery, DRV-N520 automatically activates and records video when motion is detected near the front of your vehicle or a sudden impact is detected to your vehicle. You can set the dashboard cam to record 10, 30, or 60 seconds after collision detection.

Recording Modes: The DRV-N520 offers 4 recording modes - Continuous, Manual, Event, & Parking.

    • Continuous: Turning on the power of the dashboard camera starts continuous recording. In continuous recording mode, files are deleted in order from the oldest to record when there is no recording area remaining. Video clip length can be set to 1, 2, or 3 minutes.
    • Manual: Pressing the "Record" button the dashboard camera during continuous recording starts Manual recording. The recording will start 12 seconds before the "Record" button was pressed. You can record up to one minute in Manual record mode. If the recording time exceeds one minute, the file is split to continue recording.
    • Event: The detection of a sudden collision, unexpected collision, or other event during continuous recording starts Event recording. The recording time of event recording is the 12 seconds before collision detection is activated. Up to one minute files are recorded during Event recording mode. If the recording time exceeds one minute, the file is split to continue recording.
    • Parking: Turning off the accessory power (ACC) turns off the power of the dashboard cam and switches to Parking recording mode to perform vehicle collision monitoring. If the vehicle is subjected to a collision, the power of the device turns on and Parking recording starts. When Parking recording ends, vehicle collision monitoring resumes. Parking recording starts a few seconds after the vehicle is subjected to a collision and then records for 10, 20, or 30 seconds.

Built-in GPS: The DRV-N520's built-in, highly sensitive GPS receiver automatically records driving information in the video such as speed, altitude, longitude, latitude & heading. Display your location on Google Maps with a link to the web when you play the video on the "Kenwood Drive Reviewer" Windows PC application.

Kenwood Drive Reviewer:  Kenwood Drive Reviewer is a Windows PC application for displaying video recorded with the device. The application can be downloaded from the KENWOOD website onto your Windows PC or Mac computer. You will need to remove the microSD/SDHC memory card from the dashboard camera and insert it into a USB card reader (sold separately) that is plugged into your compatible Windows PC. System Requirements for Kenwood Drive Reviewer -

    Operating System
    Windows 10, 8.1, 7 (SP1)
Macintosh OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or later

Note: When you use the Windows 7, you cannot use the following functions - Frame-by-frame reverse playback of the video that is recorded over 3M (2304x1296) and playback speed change (1/2 speed, 2 speed, 4 speed, 8 speed playback).

Driver Assistance: The Kenwood DRV-N520 dashboard cam provides audible warnings to prevent a forward collision and departure delay in order to keep you safe on the road.

    • Forward Collision:  Detects the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front and notifies with a warning sound to prevent a collision with the vehicle in front if a safe distance is not maintained. This operates at 19 mph and faster.
    • Departure Delay: When your vehicle is stopped behind the vehicle in front and then the vehicle in front begins moving, an audible warning notifies if your vehicle is late to begin moving. A warning sound is also output when, for example, your vehicle moves backward.

Built-in Mic for Audio Recording: The DRV-N520 dashboard cam is equipped with a built-in microphone for recording audio inside the vehicle. Audio is recorded in Linear PCM. The microphone can be turned on or off.

Mounting Options: The DRV-N520 can be mounted to your windshield using the supplied self-adhesive mounting bracket. Mounting the DRV-N520 dashboard camera to the center of the windshield behind the rear-view mirror will facilitate optimal video recording. The bracket allows you to adjust the angle of the camera once its mounted.

Note: Once the DRV-N520 is mounted and installed, set the mounting height of the camera from the road surface and adjust the horizon and bonnet front edge position settings to match the vehicle before using the camera for the first time. This is all done through the camera's menu system, using the Kenwood receiver's touchscreen.

Power Requirements: The Kenwood DRV-N520 dashboard camera needs to be hardwired to your vehicle's 12-volt constant, switched accessory, and ground using the included wiring harness.

    Q
Will this work with receiver DMX7709S?
    s  Jul 12, 2023
    1 answer
    A
Greetings SC. Thank you for your question. This dash cam needs both the composite video cable plus a proprietary cable connected to the stereo. The DMX7709, has the composite video input, but not the proprietary 4 pin connector. You would get the display from this dash cam, but you would not get the control of the dash cam on the stereo. You would want to step up to the DMX9708 to get 100% functionality of the DRV-N520 dash cam.

    Q
Hi I just installed my DRV-N520 Dash Cam to my Kenwood DMX 1057 XR radio. Everything seems to be running good except the problem is that on my radio which is built for this dash cam, I cannot see the settings or any of the files from the SD card. The camera is assigned to front view cameras/dash cam. All I can see is the live picture and not the settings option for the dash cam!? It is a very strange problem I cannot seem to fix. Please help!

Greetings James, and thank you for your question. This issue would need tech support. If you purchased the Stereo, or dash camera from us, you will have a direct tech support number on your shipping confirmation email. If you did not purchase either from Crutchfield, you can always call Kenwood for their support at 800-536-9663.

    Q
Can this unit DRV-N520 be installed in a 2018 Mercedes C-300 Radio System?
    robert  Sep 27, 2021
    1 answer
    A
I don't know the Mercedes hardware specifically. I have mine plugged into a Kenwood stereo. It does have the ability to operate independent of an in dash screen, meaning you can record to the SD media and plug into a computer for review. I don't think it has a generic video output to hook into systems otherwise.

I saw a video on youtube indicating that it has lane departure warning...was a european guy so maybe not the US version? Or does it have this feature?

The North American model (which is the one we sell) does not support lane departure warnings. It only has the departure warning as described by Louis in his reply. We may have dash cams that support lane departure and I commend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to check our current models.
    jason  Jun 05, 2021 (Staff)

It has collision warning and departure warning. The collision warning is obvious, but the departure warning wasn't. I thought it was lane departure, as you mentioned. It's actually an alert when you're asleep at the wheel on a red light. It detects that the car in front of you started moving, and if you don't start moving in a certain period of time, it will alert you with a visual and/or audio alert. I eventually turned both the collusion and departure warning off because it kept sending false alarms.

It's highly doubtful that the OEM nav radio has either the connections or the software to run this dashcam. This cam was meant for aftermarket Kenwood Radios.

If I have the Kenwood rear reverse camera too can this be recorded at the same time with this dash cam?

Unfortunately no. Only records the dash cam itself.
    marvin  May 02, 2020
    A
I am not sure what you mean "Kenwood Reverse Camera" - this DRV-N520 uses a specific connection on the back of the head unit, not a generic RCA connection for example. So...in my case, I have a Reverse Camera that hooks into an RCA connection and the DRV hooked into its own connection. The rear camera only records when the car is reversing while the DRV records as soon as the car is ignition on.
    anthony  Apr 27, 2020
    Q
I already have a front camera installed on my Kenwood ddx9905s, how do i install the N520 dashcam since the component video in is already being use by my front camera?
    jetson  Aug 23, 2019

Although I haven't gotten around to doing this, on my Kenwood 996 there is a video input for the side - mirror I assume. I was told I could put the front camera on that, and use the front for the dash cam. Might want to investigate that with Kenwood.
    todd  Dec 21, 2020
    A
Here's what I did with the DRV-N520 and my DNX994S. I have a front and rear camera mounted outside the car, plus the dash cam inside on the windshield. I used generic cameras. Plug the DRV-N520 into the receiver's front camera connection. Get a 'Y' cable with 2 female RCA connectors and 1 male RCA connector. Plug the video outputs of your cameras into each female connector. Plug male connector Y cable into the receiver's rear camera connection. Use a DPDT Center Off switch. One side takes 12V to the center connection. One of the outer connections goes to the front camera power input, the other outer connection goes to the rear camera power input. The other side of the switch takes 12V to both outer connections. The center connection on that side goes to the reverse input on the receiver. With the switch wired this way, when it's centered, no camera is on. When you flip the switch to one side, the reverse input gets power and the receiver automatically switches to the rear camera input and displays whatever camera received power. NOTE: you also need to turn on the option on the receiver to always switch to the rear camera input whan the reverse input is powered. The only drawback to what I did is that you have to manually flip a switch to turn on one or the other camera. I've been using this setup for about a year and a half with no issues.

The Kenwood DNX996 I installed in my Ford has a dedicated camera input for the DRV-520, I am not sure this port exists in all head units so check to make sure your radio can accept the camera because it uses a dedicated cable system to control playback from the camera head unit. This camera is not like other dashcams like a Vico etc, it has no way to playback video other than on the head unit or by taking the memory card out to your computer.

It's been a while since I purchased this but I believe that it will record an event with the car off. So if it detects an impact, it will record. But it does not simply keep recording all the time. There's a lot of settings as well, I'm sure you can select length of time, etc.

It doesn't continuously record. However if someone were to bump your car hard enough, it would record before and after the event.

Yes it does. It records for 10/20/30 seconds after car shuts off, then starts recording again in case of an event (which apparently means a collision).

If the car is bumped the recorder comes on automatically and shuts off automatically after a period of time.

To answer your question, ut remains active for up to five minute after the ignition is turned off.

I have no idea. I would call kenwood tech support

The instruction manual for the DMX7705S says it does. I have a DNX994S and it works great.

It should work with your radio, but you should double check your user manual to be sure before purchasing.

Is there an attachment that would allow me to mount this camera to a GoPro mount? That camera mount looks very unique New Tacomas have a GoPro mount on their windshield already and it would be nice to utilize that

You could design one and print it on a 3d printer easily enough.

No...this Kenwood Recorder has a mount specific to its adaptor. It is not a universal fit.

Search Arkon go pro swivel ball mount. Use that just transfer the screw down collar from the Kenwood mount.

    DDX, not DDC. LOL

I don't think so. The specs on Kenwood's website do not show it as "DashCam" ready. I also looked at pictures of the unit specified and my DDC-9904s, the dash cam port is not there.

    Q
When calibrating the driver assist features, where do I adjust the hood line to: the front edge of the hood or the top of the hood closest to the camera?

    A
The front edge of the hood. The camera line should be just above it, so the camera does not see any part of the vehicle

On your KENWOOD media player press the menu button, choose camera, then touch the camera icon in the lower left of your screen, then touch the gear icon in the lower right. Then choose driving support settings. Then choose Detection range settings. You will then see the dotted blue line for your horizon. And the dotted white line for your hood line. And menu options to adjust acccordingly. Hope that helps you!

parking brake bypass-will this dash cam stay in parking sentinel mode while driving?
    redcorvette  May 31, 2018

    A
There is no parking brake detection lead/circuit. When driving, it's best to use "continuous", "manual" or "event" recording modes.
