The Sony WH-RF400 wireless TV headphones solve this problem, without forcing you to crank up the volume and disturb others. The wireless transmitter connects to your TV's analog RCA audio outputs or headphone jack. (Please note: there are no HDMI, optical, or other digital connection options.)
Man wearing Sony WH-RF400 TV headphones

The Sony WH-RF400 headphones help you hear dialogue and sound effects more clearly, without disturbing others.

A personal solution for better TV sound

Customers often tell us that they find TV dialogue too hard to hear and understand.

I've tested an earlier version of this system, and the headset made speech so much easier to follow than my TV's built-in speakers. Plus, I was able to enjoy big movie effects in a place where firing up a surround sound system would be a no-no — namely next to my napping two-year-old's bedroom.

How it works, and what's included

Use one the included cables to connect the WH-RF400's transmitter to your TV or audio system. The transmitter sends an audio signal wirelessly to the included headset. Slip the headset over your ears, and you get clear, powerful — and personal — TV sound.

Easy-to-wear headset with on-ear controls

The headset feels incredibly light, so even though it fits over your ears, it is unobtrusive. You'll appreciate that during longer movies and binge-watching sessions. Controls are convenient, too. There's a volume dial on the right ear cup, and below it a "Voice mode" button that brings the dialogue front and centre.

More details on the Sony WH-RF400

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Sony WH-RF400 Wireless Stereo Headphone System lets you enjoy your music, TV shows, games, or movies in private. The headphones operate on radio frequencies (RF), giving you a range of up to 150 feet. The system includes the over-ear headphones, RF transmitter/headphone charging stand, rechargeable battery, and connecting cables.

Drivers/Closed Back Design: The WH-RF400 headphones feature large 40mm drivers (1.57"), giving you clear, accurate sound quality over a wide frequency range. The drivers are housed in closed-back ear cups to reduce ambient noise and to keep the audio from leaking out. The ear cups feature soft ear pads for added comfort during long listening sessions. The ear cups swivel and tilt on the head band to provide the best fit.

Voice Mode / Volume Control: If you use the wireless headphones to watch TV or movies, you can enjoy clearer dialog by engaging the Voice Mode. You can easily switch between Voice Mode and Normal playback mode with the slide switch on the right ear cup. The headphones rotary volume control is also located on the right ear cup.

Rechargeable Battery: The WH-RF400 is powered by the BP-HP800-11, a 2.4-volt 800mAh Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable battery. The battery is stored inside the left ear cup, and provides up to 20 hours of playback time. If you place the headphones on the transmitter/charging stand after each use, you can keep the battery "topped off," as it will recharge automatically. A fully-exhausted battery charges in approximately 7 hours. The charger automatically turns off when charging is complete, so there's no need to remove the headphones from the charging stand.

Optional Alkaline Batteries: When the rechargeable battery is exhausted, you can insert two "AAA" alkaline batteries and continue listening. Fresh alkaline batteries provide approximately 24 hours of playback time.

Transmitter / Charging Stand: The TMR-RF400 RF transmitter/charging stand connects to your audio source via a 3.5mm stereo mini cable (supplied). The transmitter operates at 915.5 MHz (channel 1), 916.0 MHz (channel 2), and 916.5 MHz (channel 3). If the headphones are not able to receive a clear audio signal, you can switch between channels on the transmitter base. The headphones will locate the new frequency when the Auto Tuning button (on the right ear cup) is pressed. The transmitter has a range of up to 150 feet.

Noise Reduction: The transmitter takes the audio input signal, compresses it, and converts it to an RF signal. When picked up by the headphones, the signal is decompressed, which reduces the noise level, and improves the signal-to-noise ratio.

Q
does this work with phone or it is only for TV?
gevo  Dec 08, 2023
1 answer
A
The Sony WH-RF400 Wireless Tv headphones are designed for use with TV Gevo, but has a 3.5mm analog input that can be used with other sources with wired 3.5mm or RCA analog outputs. If you have an optical digital Toslink output on your TV, you could use the Sony WLA-NS7 Bluetooth adapter in the first link paired with the fabulous Sony WH-1000XM4's in the second link. The below pair would allow you to use your Bluetooth headphones with your TV and with sources from your smartphone! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_158WLANS7/Sony-WLA-NS7.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_1581000XM4/Sony-WH-1000XM4-Black.html

Greetings Robert, and thank you for your question. We do not sell just the headset. Perhaps you can get that direct from Sony. You can try calling them at 888-222-7669.

Q
Can I use the headset with streaming? It worked when I had Spectrum. I can't get it to work if I want only stream programs. Please let me know thank you
brenda  Feb 12, 2023
1 answer
A
These capable Sony WH-RF400 Wireless TV headphones will work with any source playing into the transmitter base's 3.5mm input, so no worries there Brenda. Some TV's will only output sound through the headphone or audio output when set to "2channel PCM" in the TV's audio settings. Streaming programs will often use multi-channel decoding. If you are losing sound with some sources and not others, check the audio output settings on your TV. I hope this helps!

Q
how do you replace battery? Charging only lasts less than an hour.
susan  Dec 16, 2022
1 answer
A
It is possible to use two AAA batteries as a replacement for the BP·HPB00-11 battery pack located in the left housing of the headphones. Removing the housing cover may be achieved by sliding it downward to release it. Two AAA batteries should offer approximately 24-hours of playback.

My headphones quit working. I replaced the battery and they still did not work. I charge them for two or three days thinking maybe I hadn't waited long enough. And they still don't work. I have a new TV it's about three months old and it worked with it until recently. I have only had these earphones two years. I don't know what else to do. Do you have any suggestions.?

The Sony headphones are excellent. I Have had the Sony phones since 2920. They perform consistently and do not cut out or present any interruptions. Sound quality is very good. I had Senheiser before that and I prefer the Sony.
michael  Jul 22, 2022
A
make sure your tv volume is turned up.
robert  Jul 22, 2022
A
Make sure they are sitting on the cradle properly. On several occasions I have noticed that the headphones were not charging as they were incorrectly placed on the cradle. I believe a light changes color when they are properly seated. If that doesn't work not sure what else you can do.

It really sounds like you've covered all your bases as to what you've attempted unfortunately. If they came from here, feel free to give our Tech Support staff a call to see if they have some additional guidance on what to try.

Q
Can you use with pacemaker?
scott  Nov 26, 2021
2 answers
A
My pacemaker is manufactured by St. Jude Medical. After I got the pacemaker, I brought this headset to my first appointment with the St. Jude technician and I was told it was OK. That was 2 years ago, and it hasn't caused any problem. I use the headset 2-3 hours each day.
neil r  Nov 30, 2021
A
Some older pacemakers had restrictions but I am not familiar with newer models of pacemakers. Your cardiologist or his nurse should be able to provide you with any current restrictions and he or she would be the go to authority. Personally, I would have no qualms about using the headset if I had a pacemaker but please don't take my opinion as expert which I certainly am not. Call your surgeon or cardiologist!!!

Can you lower the volume all the way down so nobody can hear the t v and use the headphones?
fernando  Mar 03, 2021

A
Absolutely. When I watch TV late at night, I just mute the audio and listen through the headphone.
philip  Mar 05, 2021
A
Yes you can mute the tv and headphone will work
tim  Mar 04, 2021
A
I am able to turn my tv volume down, and still use these headphones. The set of headphones I have, have their own volume control which operates separately from the tv.
edward  Mar 03, 2021
Q
My wife has hearing problem and needs a head phone set with separate volume control for left ear and right ear. What ear phone would you recommend for her?
jing  Feb 01, 2021
3 answers
A
There is not a separate volume control for each earpiece, but there is a good combined control. She might be able to simply offset one earpiece slightly off the "good" ear to accommodate the situation. These headphones are totally acceptable for TV listening - but a critical audiophile would not accept them for listening to high-quality music audio.
scot  Feb 02, 2021
A
If its for watching TV it should work very well you probably will have to adjust balance left to right on TV or stereo. They sound great my wife has the same problem ear surgery last year and this solved any problems
mark  Feb 01, 2021

The Sony headphones that I purchased did not have the proper fitting to connect with my bookcase stereo which is a Sharp. So I traded with my sister who happened to have an older set of Sony headphones. The older set's connection worked fine and fit properly. However, the new headphones work very well with our Sony TV. My sister has hearing loss in both ears and these headphones are great for her. Hope this helps.
mary a  Feb 01, 2021
Q
Will these work on any TV ?
philip  Jan 31, 2021
3 answers
A
The tv/screen needs an audio output either via rca jacks or a headphone jack.
ed  Feb 01, 2021
A
We plugged our set into the back of our cable box which offered RCA connectors, We had used the ones on the TV for something else. If you have RCA connectors available, the headset should work fine, We like ours very much overall. They occasionally pick up another channel rather than the one we are listing to.
edward  Feb 01, 2021
A
If your tv has a mini rca audio jack which overrides the speakers, then it should. I run the audio through a home theater receiver then use a mini rca to 1/4" (large) rca adapter. As soon as you plug in the speakers are turned off and audio goes to the headphones.

I have a unilateral hearing loss - only the left ear is non-functioning. Can I get both audio channels (R&L) in only my right ear?
jay  Sep 10, 2020

You can look for a Y-cable that takes both channels of the audio output and combines them to a single cable to plug it into your headphone base unit.
timothy  Sep 25, 2020
A
You can get a stereo to mono "Y" adapter to get both channels combined. Just look for one that matches the jacks on your TV output side. Hope that helps!

I can't answer this since I purchased the Sony ears for my sister who has bilateral hearing loss . She loves the product and I can recommend it highly.

Can I use any wireless headphones with this unit?
ross  Dec 23, 2019

No that transmitter uses a specific RF signal that is paired to those specific Sony headphones. If you want to use your own headphones you probably want a Bluetooth transmitter that can pair with any Bluetooth headphones or speaker. The Soundcast VGtx would be a great example: https://www.crutchfield.com/I-rET1c290/p_751VGTX/Soundcast-VGtx.html

is there a way to plug sony wh-rf400 into my tv digital optical jack?
judy  Apr 24, 2019

There is no digital input on the Sony transmitter. You could use a digital to analog converter to convert the optical digital input out of your TV into an analog signal you can feed into the transmitter. Here is a basic Metra DAC that would do the job https://bit.ly/2ZU6JQ5

Can multiple headsets be used on same docking station/transmitter? I mean can different headsets be used for listening simultaneously using the same transmitter?

It would have to be paired with the transmitter. This headset has 3 settings to use to get a clear reception. This is what my husband said do tell you. He loves it!!!
jane  Jan 02, 2019

I would think that a second headset would operate only if it works in the same frequency range as the original headset. If not then it probably would not respond to the transmitter.

Q
Does Stereo Mini Plug come with Unit?
rick  Nov 06, 2018
2 answers
A
Yes there is a 4-5 foot cord with a stereo mini plug on each end. One end is inserted into the transmitter/charger unit and the other end is connected to the headphone jack on the tv. This disables the speakers on the tv and you only have sound through the headphones. There is also a y-adaptor that comes in the box and instead of connecting to the headphone jack you connect to the adaptor and there are two RCA type phono plugs that insert into the speaker jacks on the back of the tv or the speaker jacks on a stereo receiver. This does not disable the speakers and you have sound through the headphones and through the speakers. Headphones are great!
