Not worth the investment
Carson from Hudson, FL on 5/31/2023
2013 Nissan Rogue
This is a nice looking radio, but has limitations. I purchased it for a 2013 Nissan Rogue, car play is a very good feature, however this Sony is not compatible with iPhone 12 or greater. I was unable to connect via usb to customize the background due to the compatibility issue, also my backup camera is now only displaying in black and white, many of the functions of this sony are very limited. My total investment with all the extra hardware and installation was close to $1000. To me it was not worth it. I should've explored more options.
Pros: Carplay was a definite winner
Cons: Limited options, some compatibility issues

Perfect Mid Size
Rhett from HERRIMAN, UT on 5/18/2023

Excellent head unit. This is my fifth Apple Car Play enabled head unit but my first wireless. I've been skeptical with the early reviews of wireless Car Play and have no concerns any longer. Kinda want to swap out my Alpines for these Sony's now. Very intuitive UI and plenty of connections to run any size system desired.
Pros: Bang for Buck. Easy touch screen. Plenty of flexibility. Nice physical size to fit many different dashboards.
Cons: Only a USB-C connection for USB input. Not sure we're quite to that point yet. Can still use an adaptor, but shouldn't need to. Still a lot of regular USBs out there. Only other con is that I didn't choose this before for the other cars in the family.

2006 4Runner. Love the radio. It is simple to use and for an 06 to get this wireless carplay is a big plus. The sound improved a lot (original speakers) but if you want bass out of your aftermarket radio you must get an amplifier. Overall super pleased with a high quality Sony product. I guess it happens to all that after you get it you wish you had gone to the next one level up. (30 min for harness merging, soldering and heat shrink + 1 HR installation on my car)

Exceeded expectations, spending the extra $22 dollars to have Crutchfield prewire the connections and interface probably saved many hours of time and frustration. The Sony was the only unit that digital clock that has an elegant sweep hands appearance like Mercedes or Lexus. Really adds something special on top of wireless Apple car play and all the other great features.

2012 Ford F-150 FX4
This Sony is defiantly worth the money. The screen is nice and bright for day and night driving, plus the screen response is better than I was expecting. I really liked the 14 band equalizer to help tune my new speakers. I mainly got this head unit for the apple car play which works great, sometimes it takes about 15-30 seconds to connect but for the majority of the time it instantly connects when I start my Truck. Plus this the sony connects to my OBD plug so I am able to see my speed, temps, rpm ect and shows me codes when I have a check engine light which is nice to have if you like seeing that type of info.
Pros: Apple car play Great screen

The wireless CarPlay function works good. Had a little trouble with the volume being too low at first. Played with the phone volume and it's fine. Apparently the radio only recognizes Android phones through the USB connection. Not really a problem just unexpected. I'm not really a fan of the Home Screen clock. I haven't figured out how to change that but again not a problem as I'll mostly be using the CarPlay function.
Pros:
Cons: USB only useful for charging Apple phone.

Installed in a 2004 Ford F150. Bought the pre-made harness which made installation super easy. Love the very fast boot-up. User interface is very simple. Like the ability to customize the steering wheel controls. The GPS antenna works really well and was able to get a fix even inside my garage. Resistive touchscreen is just OK, certainly better than any other resistive screens I've used, but really at this price should have been capacitive. The wireless Android Auto works well and is more convenient than I expected coming from wired-only on our other vehicle. The display is much more readable in bright daylight than most systems I've used, especially considering how it's tilted up a bit in the F150. Overall I am very happy with the system.

Pros: The first thing that attracted me to this unit was the price point for wireless CarPlay. All around this radio has great features for not only it's price point for even higher.
Cons: I would say the Idata link is a little glitchy. Sometimes my stock screen will have two times on it. Sometimes it will say CarPlay when I'm using CarPlay other times it will not

Such a great upgrade from factory head...thanks for awesome help in making sure this was a painless (and complete) install. The Maestro along with the two cable sets (Sony to Maestro and Maestro to 2014 Jeep JK) worked seamlessly without any cutting or splicing. I now have full engine, tire, etc. Data via obd and Android Auto just connects automatically providing Waze, Spotify, Phone, etc. This is exactly what I wanted and so much more. Only wish I had ordered rear camera...but it's on the way. Thank you!

Clean, Solid Unit
Bryce from Reno, NV on 2/20/2023
2012 Jeep Liberty
Installed in 2012 Jeep Liberty Sport with iDatalink Maestro RR and HRN-HRR-CH1. This is the first head unit I have put into a vehicle since 1995 - if you are the same, or it's your first go, know this - that's a LOT of wiring you get, of which half you will not utilize. I suggest either paying for pre-wiring, or keeping your phone handy for Crutchfield's Customer Service. They did an outstanding job assisting me in figuring out what was needed. Once that figured out, the install in whole was 30 minutes. The deck is clean and has only one drawback - if you have factory installed SiriusXM, you cannot use it. You will have to get an aftermarket unit. Outside of this, with the ease of install, the deck options, clean output, another quality product from SONY.
Pros: Ease of install Quality Output Clean appearance
Cons: Cannot use factory SiriusXM Excessive wiring waste

This is a great system at a great Crutchfield price. Install was simple and it came on immediately upon attaching power and turning Trailblazer on. Apple Car play synced immediately and it's sweet. Sound was great out of the box but it's even better after tweaking equalizer and crossover. Speaker adjustments really improve sound. Adjusting navigation and phone volumes is simple. There is a firmware update I'm struggling to install because of my lack of tech skills. All in all I this is a great replacement system for my 2008 Trailblazer with factory Bose speakers that finally sound like they should.

Average materials quality, went in easy. I like the simplicity of the look and the amp made my stock speakers sound better. Installation was a little tricky but with some assistance from Crutchfield I got it going. I wish the dimmer was based on ambient light and would get darker as it gets darker outside. Finding the best setting for twilight driving into night is a bit challenging. The wireless car play drops out occasionally but overall I'd still buy it again. Big improvement to my 06 4Runner.
Pros: Wireless car play, brand, sound quality, design , boots quickly

Purchased this unit after putting AX5500 in wife's 05 Matrix. Love both the units. Purchased the AX4000 primarily for the wireless A. auto/Carplay which thus far has been great. Still learning the quirks of switching back and forth as I use Android and wife Apple. The USB input does play video files (at least it does MP4) even though documentation I've seen thus far says it does not. I accidently connected a micro chip from camera to USB and video files (MP4) played fine, unit reads file structure for selecting file folders, songs from screen. One quirk of unit is changing certain sources via source button only changes audio, screen does not change to match which is odd but seems to be the way all the sony units are. Must go to home screen to change screen to match audio source HOWEVER Radio to USB and vise versa the screen changes to match audio source but does NOT from A. auto to either Radio or USB.
Pros: Very responsive unit Plenty of features for an old man. Actual buttons to use
Cons: Audio and Screen not matching when using "source" button

Feels like this is a product in beta. The screen is not very responsive and is blurry due to the matte film it uses. Ocassionally the Android Auto does not work when starting up the car. Rebooting by holding the Home button >10 seconds does not fix it and is only resolved by turning off/on the car. Additionally, using the car radio while using Android Auto is unusable as the > buttons to switch between radio stations stops working. This is resolved by reopening the radio app at which time it skips between the radios stations based on the number of times you pressed >. It acts as if the radio app stops working and the button presses are queued. At least the volume controls work when this occurs. Lacks what I feel is a basic feature, automatic speed dependent volume control, which automatically increases the volume based on the vehicle's speed.

Great update
Pow from Key West, FL on 1/15/2023
2003 Toyota Celica GT
So far, so good. I previously had the Sony AX1000 in my 2002 accord and it was ok at best. The unit since day one had some issues, phone would get disconnected when connected to car play, the unit itself would shut off randomly and reboot or freeze. Just constant issues. I wish I would have returned it within the return policy time frame. After using wireless car play in my recent rental cars and seeing the AX4000 and reviews, I had to get this new unit for my daily commutes. I did not hook up the speed sensor wire and everything so far has been working great. Wireless apple car play is the direction that all companies should be going in. Another great thing is that Sony is using the USB-C outlet for the external connection. My only issue is that I wish Sony had a built in microphone like on some of there other entry level basic media players. Not having to route an external mic on my project vehicle was great and leaves a much cleaner look. Even for a resistive touch screen, it is not bad, gives a good update to the car with appearing period correct for the vehicle. I hope this head unit holds up better than the AX-1000 did. Wish I could trade that one in.
Pros: Wireless car play.
Cons: None

2008 Honda Odyssey
I was looking for a head unit for my 2008 Honda Odyssey. This head unit meets most of my requirements: Brand name: Sony ( Good ) Screen size: 7-inch is perfect replacement for the stock Honda radio. Android Auto: Wireless ( Wireless is a must-have for me ) Touch screen: Resistive ( I wish it were capacitive ) Radio steering wheel control: Yes ( this is a must-have for me ) High current USB charging: 3-amp USB-C ( Other HUs only put out 1.5 to 2 amps). Price: under $500 ( I am fine with the price ) So the only compromise I made was the resistive touch screen. I also bought the other hardware suggested by Crutchfield's website. The installation was easy, thanks to the Crutchfield Ready Harness Service. The only 2 wires that required me to connect during the installation: parking brake wire ( I attached it Ground which was the HU's case ) and the reverse wire ( I taped it off because I don't need backup camera right now). Installation time: 1 hour ( removing the old and putting in the new) The most time consuming part was deciding where to put the microphone and the GPS receiver. This part took me 1+ hour to route and re-route these 2 wires to my liking. The HU worked immediately after all the wiring harnesses were connected. The HU booted up and played the radio in 5 seconds and then took 10 more secs to display the home screen, then took 10 more secs to connect to the phone. That's FAS
Pros: Good brand name Wireless Android Auto for under $500 Steering wheel control 3-amp USB-C charging Fast start up time.
Cons: Resistive touch screen ( maybe)

A good head unit with plenty of functions. Cannot attest to android auto function, but Wireless Apple CarPlay is flawless in all apps. Display is appropriately sensitive to both single touches and swiping, has a good, clear image and good brightness, although only with the brightness turned all the way up. Dimmer function does not seem to work, and it very much needs an anti-glare coating, especially in a car. Back panel USB-C is a nice touch, as are the GPS Antenna, Mic, and backup camera inputs.
Pros: Good display image quality Good Display Sensitivity Seemless CarPlay functionality Good support for additional functions(Satellite Radio, External Mic, Reverse Camera, etc)
Cons: Desperately needs anti glare coating on screen Needs a time- or light-activated dimmer for screen - Screen only visible in sunlight at max brightness, but blinding during night time

2014 Honda CRV
This has all the features I was looking for at a good price. The install was straightforward, and was able to tie into factory camera on my Honda CRV. I purchased a backup camera with this, and to wire it to the stereo so now I have two rca plugs for factory and aftermarket backup camera. The interface is very clean and easy to navigate, and the power of this stereo is very good. The anti-glare screen is not that great. The screen has a dull look and while I don't get mirror like reflections, It is very difficult to see in sunlight. At least it doesn't blind me with the reflection, but it washes out the display quite a bit. The backup camera seems like it is running at 10-15 FPS, it is not very smooth at all. It serves the purpose to look at what is behind me. The touch display mis-reads my touch sometimes. It has a calibration for the touch, but the equalizer bands are next to each other kind of close, and it is difficult to adjust with accuracy. I am always tweaking equalizer and sub settings and they are in the settings screen as there is no way to adjust sound without going through the settings screens. Much in Apple carplay, and to change sound seettings is 4 touches: I have to go home, then settings, then, sound, and then equalizer or subwoofer settings. It would be great if there was a shortcut to sound settings. The 14-band equalizer is nice, but find I am mostly tweaking the bass and treble bands
Pros: Wireless carplay Sound Equalizer, subwoofer settings, crossover, and timing adjustments
Cons: Display Touch sensitivity

Difficult fit for clean mount in 2015 Subaru Forester
Mark from Millsboro, DE on 12/27/2022
2014 Subaru Outback
Have to take away one star for how this "fits" a 2015 Subaru Forester. In order to use the OEM head unit brackets with two screws on each side, there is a pretty large gap between the trim kit and the car trim so the head unit does not sit far enough forward with the stock screw holes on the head unit. Already had to add more holes on the brackets for a stable mount, but will try adding more if I ever pull this again. Head unit is fantastic and car play is noticeably faster than similar JVC models.
Pros: Very responsive, screen sits at great viewing angle.
Cons: Stock mounting holes do not properly align with original OEM mounting brackets and getting correct flush depth is difficult. Be prepared to drill lots of holes!

It's OK..
John from Toms River, NJ on 12/25/2022
I have had this unit in my truck for about 3 months now. I bought it primarily for the wireless connectivity to Apple CarPlay (other radios required a wire connection) to give me a larger Navigation display. CarPlay works great. The radio itself is just OK. Icons are very fussy. you tap them and they glow to acknowledge the tap, but don't do anything. You have to hit them pretty much dead-center to work. They crowd too many station channels together, making it difficult to tap the right one without steadying your hand on the dash. The black and white thing looks classy in the ads, but it's a bit bland in real life when coupled with the anti-glare screen. My guess is that they went that route because the screen resolution is just not that great, as the colors it does display off my phone are rather grainy and cartoonish. One plus is that off means OFF, and not just a glow-in-the-dark screen display of black dots like my old RAM uConnect. I'm still running factory speakers, so it's probably not fair to ding the radio for the sound. All in all, the radio serves its purpose, but Sony really needs to go back and try again.
Pros: Wireless Carplay. A real OFF button.
Cons: Fussy icons, crowded screen, poor screen resolution.

I actually only listen to NPR so all the audio features are nice but I don't really care about that. Installation was pretty smooth. Had one issue and it was resolved with a tech support call. The updated firmware for the radio seemed to make a difference particularly in sharpening the back up camera. Crutchfield's instructions were well put together and explained well with what parts you don't need, which was very helpful. I think the install took about 2-3 hrs, not bad for a 70+ guy. Some friends stopped by and thought it looked oem. There is no doubt Crutchfield has this figured out. I waited a couple of months to use the unit prior to this review in case there were issues.

Decent but not great.

Connects quickly but interface not very intuitive or customizable. Sounds decent. Some steering wheel functions don't work, no matter what I do. Website originally said it would mirror my Android screen but no mention of that function in the manual.
Pros: Connects to Android Auto quickly.
Cons: Not very customizable. Not all steering wheel controls can be configured to work.

Great wireless carplay at decent price
Steve from San Diego, CA on 11/16/2022
2008 Toyota 4Runner
My 2008 4Runner with base sound system was feeling old particularly in comparison to the other cars with Carplay. I really like the wireless carplay. It connects fast and has been reliable. In two weeks, the unit has had two hiccups. Once it seemed to reset while driving, but it came back fast. The other time the Maestro didn't pick up. Restarting the car fixed it. If you want to use an amp or have the better screen, the next model up is nice. For the price, this is s very nice unit so far.
Pros: - Wireless Carplay - Car data interface is better than expected - Clean and easy install - Slight sound improvement over stock
Cons: - The screen can suffer in direct daylight. Driving away from a sunset will be hard to see it. Otherwise, no major issues in Southern California - Software is a little limited. Like the "customize" button only has one option... - USB C is the connector and I've got mostly the previous style cables and pass through connectors. They are available, so this may not be a bad thing.

I like the unit mostly. Disappointed with the way Google maps works over it, but that may be a function of my Iphone and what it sends to it. Seems to have a hard time staying connected to my iphone. Wish it came with some sort of a manual to explain how things work, as opposed to having to download it. Screen seems kind of washed out.

Nice system but could use better software
Crutchfield customer from PORTLAND, OR on 10/26/2022
2005 Nissan Frontier
Great looking system that looks like it belongs in my Nissan Frontier. Wireless CarPlay works great so far. Screen seems pretty responsive and system starts up quickly. My biggest complaint is not being able to program shortcuts to features. System description says you can program different functions to the center button but your only choices are mute and input select. The only way to tweak the sound is through the EQ. It work great but you have to press the Home Button/Settings/Sound/EQ to get to it. Would love to add a shortcut to the home screen or a programmable button. Also would love to change the color of the main button lights to match my car.
Pros: Screen, Wireless CarPlay, Easy install
Cons: Menus and software could be better

Top Notch for Tech Snob

I have had it installed for a month or so and I have to say I'm extremely happy. I haven't considered SONY in a long time in terms of car audio and I am glad that I did here. The reviews do not lie about this unit. It's fast and has all the features you would want and then some. Wireless android auto is a great feature and considering the reviews are better and the prices are lower than the kenwood... it was a no brainer.

Sony XAV-AX4000
Fred from Orinda, CA on 10/18/2022
This unit works flawlessly, was easy to set up and it has awesome sound. I picked this one for two main reasons. It has actual power and volume buttons separate from the touchscreen and it connects the iPhone to Apple Car Play wirelessly. Many of the other models I looked at required the phone to be plugged into a cord. And the microphone for hands free phone calling works really well in the noisy interior of the Miata. Outgoing calls sound quite clear. And with the install kit, it works with the amp from the Bose premium sound system and the steering wheel controls work as well. It was a little more than I'd hoped to spend but it was worth it.

Installed in a 2007 duramax chevy Silverado classic 2500 along with a back up camera. My old factory radio died on me over 3 years ago. I shuffled songs by Don Willams that very next Monday morning on my way to work. Brought a tear to my eye being able to hear music like that again. Best Monday I've had in a long time. The $25 to have crutchfield pre-crimp the interface harness saved me at least 2 hours of work. Big thanks to Luke from crutchfield for the suggestion. Going on a few weeks now, no issues and everything works

I did not purchase this from Crutchfield but I wanted to review it for people interested in this unit. #1-The unit and functions are easy to use. #2-The sound is good. #3-The display is nice and Apple car play works well wirelessly and wired. #4-It is a great value There is one strange thing with the radio. For some reason it takes about 1-2 seconds to change songs. Other than that, the radio is still good for the price. I would recommend it even with the small glitch with changing channels.

Outstanding Head Unit
Matt from Clarksville, TN on 9/19/2022
Excellent product. I installed this in my C5 corvette. I had to make no modifications as the factory head unit was 1.5 din and this unit is a single din with a double din screen. Startup is fairly quick, sound is great, I love the wireless Apple car play/android auto, and it has a resistive touch screen as opposed to a capacitive one. Some may not like this, but it responds to touch very well and is anti-glare. This is everything I wanted in a head unit at a great price.
Pros: Wireless Apple car play and android auto, anti glare screen, quick startup.
Cons: None that I know of.

Impressive headunit other than a few things
Juewei from Waltham, MA on 9/19/2022
1990 Mazda Miata
Impressive unit with a 7/10 score. The installation was quite smooth with detailed instructions on the manual. The chassis design is a single din which is perfect for hiding wiring harness underneath. The screen is crystal clear and it's very responsive. The wireless carplay works perfectly and the connection is lightening fast (only takes under 10 seconds after it's powered on). Settings was straight forward as well. And the simplicity of the UI design looks modern while being very practical. But I wouldn't say it's even close to perfect. While advertising using a convertible car and claimed it's equipped with anti-glare screen. The glare was pretty obvious in my opinion (while the top is down) on sunny days. The maximum brightness of the screen also won't justify it being installed in a convertible, even though sometime the top is up. Besides, you have no way to adjust the brightness of the display if you turn on auto-dimming. The touch screen is a RESISTIVE touch screen other than capacitive (Shoppers BE AWARE!) so scrolling on the screen wouldn't be as smooth as a capacitive one (which for this price point I'm a bit disappointed). The rear view camera's upper guideline can't be adjusted below the midpoint so if you have a backup camera that can only face a bit more downward, the upper guideline would reach above the ground level. If Sony read this, please fix whatever you can in a firmware update. Thanks.
Pros: Lightening fast carplay connection; Intuitive and beautiful UI design; Crystal clear display with reasonable PPI for a headunit; Super responsive screen; Single DIN chassis for better wiring hideaway.
Cons: "Anti-glare" performs very poorly (for convertibles!); Resistive touch screen feels very cheap for this price point; Maximum brightness still too dim (for convertibles!); Lack of brightness adjustability (when you turn auto dimming on); Lack of backup camera guideline adjustability;

So glad I ignored the 1 star review (with no explanation) and purchased this unit. Main reason was the convenience of wireless Apply CarPlay. This unit has everything I need. Purchased the prewired harness from the folks at Crutchfield and install was a breeze. What a great upgrade for my Corolla! Sound quality and power is more than sufficient for the factory installed speakers which sound a whole lot better. The system is very responsive and pairing is straightforward and quick. This system is excellent value for the price and I recommend without reservation.
Pros: Wireless Apple CarPlay. Easy Install. Quick Processing Speed. Very affordable for the price!

I don't have anything else to compare it to, but I like this unit a !ot. It has an attractive in-dash look. Operation is snappy, and the user interface is easy to understand. Integration with iDatalink Maestro in my 4Runner is seamless and adds a lot of functions that are really useful. Add-on SiriusXM radio installs easily and works great. Best part is the wireless Android Auto feature: It connects automatically as soon as I start the car and operates without lag.
Pros: Responsive performance Integration with iDatalink Maestro Works well with add-on SiriusXM radio Wireless Android Auto
Cons: Could use a more powerful amplifier

This one was worth the wait
Richard from Seattle, WA on 9/2/2022

If you're not using ApplePlay or Android Auto, I'm fairly sure there are better units out there for the price. But if you are (and given the range of things you can do with that connection, why wouldn't you), then I'm not so certain you could do better than this system - particularly at this price. The Android Auto is wonderful - especially the wireless connection: it pairs every time I start the car and before I'm out of the driveway. I love that I don't even need to pull my phone out of my pocket. The UI on this unit is nice - the virtual 'buttons' on the display are simple and well spaced - you don't need to study it to find what you want ... which is a must when you need to keep your eyes on the road. Granted I'm not a true audiophile but the sound does not disappoint. I'd be surprised to find better at this price. Setup time is usually proportional to the number of features, and this one holds to that. Out of the box, though, the defaults get you a good way there. I still have to do a bit of customization (what apps I want to view and where, EQ settings, etc.) but it works well enough that I can wait until I have time to do that. I love the fact that the unit behind the face is half height (single DIN) - it provides much needed room for the cables and things like the steering wheel interface module (an add on). My old Kenwood finally gave up the ghost and I had to wait until this one came in stock, but it was definitely worth the wait.
Pros: - Connects to the phone fairly quickly and wireless Android Auto is sooo worth it - no fumbling of cables...it just connects each time. - Sound is good and User Interface are designed to keep your eyes on the road. Physical buttons are well placed. - Half height chassis really simplifies installation
Cons: - doesn't come with many applications (maps, etc) installed on the unit - but that's where the wireless connection comes in - you use the ones on your phone. - like any complex system it takes a while to fully set up

An "upgrade" ? From previous gen.
Julian from Littleton, CO on 8/30/2022
2012 Toyota RAV4
Not much of an upgrade from previous generation of Sony XAV. Screen is actually a downgrade, instead of a true touchscreen similar to a phone, it now has a dual layer touchscreen build. You can feel the two layers when using it. The screen also doesn't produce pure whites like the previous generation, more of an off white with a tint of yellow. The main reason I got this unit was for the wireless Apple CarPlay. Although it's nice not having to plug my phone into a USB cord, there's a really bad lag when changing between songs. about a 2-3 second lag. Not sure if this is how other wireless CarPlay works, but it's pretty annoying, especially when you're trying to skip multiple songs. The new operating system is nice. They give you a lot more options for EQ and crossovers. For me it's not enough to justify the upgrade.
Pros: New operating system Wireless CarPlay Sound control
Cons: Dual layer touchscreen Off white colors on screen (yellowish tint) 2-3 second lag when changing between songs using CarPlay
