More details on the Alpine KTA-30FW Tough Power Pack

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Alpine KTA-30FW is a super-compact, weather-resistant power pack to give you higher power output and better dynamic range for open-air vehicles, such as ATVs, side-by-sides, motorcycles, and boats. This Class D amplifier can be used with factory head units or aftermarket sound systems. The KTA-30FW comes with a single harness with all of the power, input, and output connections, terminated with a water-resistant 26-pin connector.

Dynamic Peak Power (DPP): The KTA-30FW is equipped with a new dynamic power supply design that provides a burst of power when needed. Dynamic Peak Power (DPP) technology increases the internal gain level when more power is needed, effectively doubling the output power to give you better dynamic range at high volume.

Power Output: The KTA-30FW has the following power output specifications:

  • CTA-2006-B Power Spec: 75 watts RMS x 4 (at 2 ohms and 4 ohms, 14.4V, ≤ 1% THD+N)
  • Dynamic Peak Power Spec: 150 watts x 4 (at 2 ohms and 4 ohms, 14.4V, ≤ 1% THD+N)

Weather Resistant: The power pack is ideal for side-by-sides, boats, motorcycles, and other vehicles that may be exposed to the elements. The KTA-30FW has an IP66 weather-resistance rating for protection against moisture and dust.

Connections: The weather-resistant OEM-grade Tyco 26-pin connector is for all needed amp connections, including the following:

  • Power/Ground: The connector has 12" 10-gauge power (red) and ground (black) pigtails. The red power wire has a large, in-line noise filter. There is no internal or in-line fuse, so you'll need to add a 30A fuse near the battery's positive (+) terminal.
  • Remote Turn-on: There are two remote leads on the connector. Connect the blue/white Remote Turn-on lead to the +12V remote turn-on or power antenna lead from the head unit. The solid blue Remote Out lead can be used to turn on additional amplifiers. If your head unit does not have an amplifier turn-on lead, see Alternate Turn-on Options (below).
  • Inputs: The amplifier will accept either line-level or speaker-level inputs. The amp's input wires are color-coded twisted pairs with female RCA jacks. If your source unit has RCA outputs, you can simply connect RCA cables to the amp. If the source unit does not have RCA outputs, you can cut off the amp's RCA jacks and splice the source unit's speaker wires to the twisted pair inputs. (Color codes: Front left: white, Front right: gray, Rear left: green, Rear right: purple)
  • Speaker Outputs: The connector has speaker output wires for four speakers. These 20-gauge speaker wires follow the same color coding as the input wires (see above).

Alternate Turn-on Options: If the source unit does not have a traditional amplifier turn-on lead, or if the power antenna lead is activated only when the radio is on, there are two options for turning on the amp:

  • Switched Power Source: The remote turn-on lead of the amplifier can be connected to a switched power source (ignition) in the vehicle. A 3A fuse should be installed close to the ignition tap. The amplifier will stay on as long as the ignition switch is on.
  • Separate Switch: A SPST (single-pole, single-throw) switch can be installed on the amplifier's turn-on lead. Again, a 3A fuse should be added near the power source. The switch should be placed where it is accessible by the driver. The switch will need to be turned off when the vehicle is not running to avoid running the battery down.

Controls: Hidden beneath a water-resistant panel, the KTA-30FW's controls include the following:

  • Input Signal: The amplifier will accept line-level or speaker-level input signals. You can indicate the type of signal being used via this 2-way switch (RCA or SPK)
  • Input Configuration: You can connect the source unit with four channel or two channel inputs. If connecting four input channels, the 2-way switch should be set to 4CH. If connecting two input channels, or bridging the amp, the switch should be set to 2CH.
  • Input Gain: There are independent rotary gain controls for CH1/2 and CH3/4. Each control has markings for Minimum (MIN), Maximum (MAX), and Nominal (NOM).
  • Filter Mode: There are independent crossover controls for CH1/2 and CH3/4. You can set the crossover to High Pass (HP), Low Pass (LP), or Full Range (OFF), via the 3-way switch.
  • Frequency: The filter cutoff frequencies can be independently set for CH1/2 and CH3/4. The rotary controls are continuously variable between 50Hz and 400Hz.

Specifications:

  • Frequency Response: 15Hz - 36kHz (+0, -3dB, 1 watt into 4 ohms)
  • Input Sensitivity:
    • RCA: 0.2V - 4V
    • Speaker: 0.5V - 10V
  • THD+N:
    • 10W into 2Ω: < 0.2%
    • Rated Power into 2Ω: <0.1%
    • 10W into 4Ω: <0.1%
    • Rated Power into 4Ω: <0.1%
  • S/N Ratio:
    • 1W into 4Ω: ≤ 82dB
    • Rated Power into 4Ω: > 98dB

Q
Is "Dynamic Peak Power" marketing speak for a large built in capacitor?
blarg  Feb 03, 2023
1 answer
A
Alpine hasn't shared exactly what has gone into internal design for this amplifier. DPP does offer a noteworthy difference in sound when compared to amplifiers with similar wattage/physical size.

Q
Will this Amp handle two of the SBV-10-WRA 10" enclosed subs?
bryce  Aug 14, 2021
1 answer
A
Under the features section of the page for this sub it says; The 300W RMS/900W max power rating is a match for the KTA-30MW Mono Tough Power Pack Amplifiers This is probably a Mono amp and the one you are questioning is probably the 4 channel amp. 4 channels for 4 speakers. Mono for 1 speaker. It seems like I would want a little more powerfull am than this, but if it is going in a Jeep, space may be an issue. I would match this speaker with an amp rated at 300wRMS minimum.

Q
what Alpine head units does this 'pair' with? I have a 2013 Wrangler JKU (w/ premium factory-optioned Alpine OEM system), looking to upgrade entire system, but want to keep the appearance / looks post-upgrade as 'stealth' as possible.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Q
If i install this in my 2018 ram 1500 with 6 speaker set-up non-alpine. Do I need to use new speaker wires or can I tap into my existing speaker wires? I read at 75rms i should be fine but just want to be sure.

A
Installed in my 2018 Civic hatch, used the factory wires with no problems. Just make sure the red power cable goes to the battery positive connector, with a fuse, and find some good metal to ground the negative to body
joseph  Mar 18, 2021
A
yes that is not a problem i have a 2000 ford that i am using my stock harness with this amp
keith  Mar 18, 2021
Q
Will this directly plug and play to factory head unit for 2015 Jeep GrandCherokee or will I need to by an adapter ?
sean  Apr 28, 2020
4 answers
A
This is a hard wire amp meaning it has no plug but easy to do
ron  Apr 28, 2020
A
No, this not not plug and play like the 445 power pack. This amp needs a power cable to the battery and rca cables from the head unit.
bill  Apr 28, 2020
A
You will not need an adapter, but you will have to do some wire splicing as with any install. if you have RCA plugs on the back of your factory head unit, it will plug right up. You will still have to splice in the speaker side. If you do not have RCAs, you can cut off the RCA plugs in the amp. Then you basically cut your speaker wires and splice in the amp on both ends. I believe also they recommend running the power wire of the amp straight to the battery. Do not splice into another power source.
donald  Apr 28, 2020
A
no, you will need to cut all speaker wires and run to the new amp and back to behind the factory head. lot of work but doable.
scott  Apr 28, 2020
Q
Does this require wiring to battery directly or can it use a source under the dash?
brad  Dec 10, 2019
3 answers
A
Per the instructions, it says to connect directly to the battery. You also should use a 30 amp inline fuse close to the battery, which is not included. Manual also says do not hook to fuse block. So definitely don't splice into something else.
donald  Dec 12, 2019
A
No I does not. It is powered directly from the head unit through the included harness.
bill  Dec 11, 2019
A
This would need to be connected to the battery.
michael  Dec 11, 2019
Q
Can this amp be installed on the firewall in the engine compartment?
brandon  Oct 07, 2019
3 answers
A
Hi Brandon, thank you for your question. It would not be recommended to mount the amp to the firewall due to the firewall possibly being a conductor of electricity which could cause the amp to have a short circuit, as well as heat issues, and when connecting the power wire to your battery, that cable needs to be as long as possible to reduce the possibility of electrical shorts or incompatibility. It would be best to mount the amp inside the cab of a vehicle, since this is quite small, you can mount it under the dash board, and keep it out of site, and tucked away nicely. Chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, any of our Advisors will be happy to assist you, or answer any questions you may have.
jessica  Oct 24, 2019 (Staff)
A
I put mine under dash. Mounting in the engine compartment will cook the amp.
paul  Oct 23, 2019
A
It is waterproof but do be careful that it doesn't get too hot where you are mounting it.
