A total Alpine upgrade

Good times in your Wrangler Unlimited are about to get better. Alpine's Restyle PSS-22WRA speaker system takes the guesswork out of installation with nine direct-fit speakers and power sources perfectly suited for your Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited (not compatible with premium sound systems). Alpine has also designed this weather-proof system to endure the environmental harshness of life in your Jeep, even when the top is off. Get ready to rock the great outdoors.

The sound

Alpine supplies everything you need to revitalize the sound in your Wrangler. You'll get two 6-1/2" component systems with 1" dome tweeters for the front and sound bar locations in your Jeep. Alpine lets you convert these components to a coaxial design if called for in your JK Unlimited. The included weather-resistant Tough Pack 4-channel amp ups your power for awesome clarity at all volumes — a must for top-down drivers. Alpine also gives you a 10" enclosed underseat subwoofer and a Tough Pack mono amp for some whoppin' bass.

The fit

Alpine designed the Restyle line for drivers who want to improve their sound but want to maintain the factory look of their vehicle. The PSS-22WRA sound system upholds this approach by including tweeter mounting gear suitable for a variety of locations. The woofers fit directly into your factory locations and in the case of the two amps, all wiring is included, complete with factory compatible plugs. Once the PSS-22WRA system goes in, you won't even know it's there... until you crank up the volume.

Installation Note: This system will not work in Wranglers with a manual transmission, as the amp mounting bracket interferes with the clutch assembly. This package also will not work in Wranglers with the Alpine system, or in 2-door models.

Product Research

Features

Overview: Alpine's PSS-22WRA is a dedicated 9 speaker sound system designed specifically for 2011-2018 Jeep Wrangler 4-door JK Unlimited vehicles not equipped with a factory Alpine amplified sound system. The Alpine replacement system includes; two compact amplifiers, one 4 x 50 watt RMS amplifier for the four speaker locations; a 120 watt RMS mono amp, driving a  10" subwoofer enclosure; and two sets of SPV-65X-WRA 6-1/2" component speakers. The PSS-22WRA also includes a remote bass knob, for changing the bass level from the dash, along with all the mounting hardware and wiring harnesses necessary for mounting and adapting into the factory system.

Notes:

  • Not compatible with manual transmission vehicles; amp mounting bracket will interfere with clutch assembly.
  • Not compatible with 2-door JK Unlimited models.

Wiring: The PSS-22WRA system can be interfaced with a factory radio (non-amplified) or an aftermarket radio, including Alpine's Restyle headunits. The included T-harness interfaces the factory wiring in the dash, providing either a speaker-level signal from a factory radio or an RCA line-level signal from an aftermarket radio, to feed to the two Alpine amplifiers. The T-harness also feeds the amplified return signal back into the factory wiring and out to each of the speakers, utilizing the factory speaker wires. The provided Main Harness includes a 10 ga. power wire, with inline fuse holder, that gets run to the battery, providing power for both the 4-channel amp and the subwoofer amp. This harness also works in conjunction with the T-harness by providing audio in and out between the radio and both amps. Speaker adapter harnesses are provided for each set of speakers, including the dash tweeters, so no cutting into the factory wiring will be required. Inline high-pass crossovers are provided for both sets of tweeters.

KTA-30F-WRA Amplifier: The KTA-30F-WRA is a 4 channel amplifier providing 50 watts per channel into a 4Ω load. The amp can accept both line-and speaker-level inputs and includes an Auto Turn-on circuit that will activate the amp when it senses a signal on the speaker-level inputs. Connection to the amp is done through a single 26-pin plug off of the main harness. Controls for the 4-channel amp are located underneath a removable metal cover-plate and include:

  • Gain: Adjusts the input signal level.
  • Filter: Two 3-way switches, one each for front and rear channels, provides options for High-Pass, Low-Pass, and Off (full range).
  • Crossover Frequency: One dial for each set of channels can be used to adjust the cutoff frequency for those two channels. Each crossover has a range from 50 Hz to 400 Hz.
  • Input: Two switches, common to both sets of channels, include:
    • RCA/SPK: Selects the input signal type.
    • 2Ch/4Ch: Selects whether 2 or 4 input channels will be used.

KTA-30M-WRA: The KTA-30M-WRA is a 120 watt RMS mono amplifier for powering the 10" subwoofer. Like the 4-channel amp, it can accept either line- or speaker-level inputs and features an Auto Turn-on circuit that will activate the amp when it senses a signal on the speaker-level inputs. An included wired remote lets you easily adjust the bass level from the front seating area. The control can be mounted under a dash panel and gives you a level range from 0 to -20 dB, relative to the gain setting on the amplifier. Controls on the subwoofer amplifier include:

  • RCA/SPK: Selects the input signal type.
  • Gain: Used to vary the input level.
  • Low Pass Filter: Rotary control that can set the filter cutoff between 50 - 400 Hz.
  • Filter On/Off switch
  • Subsonic: Adjusts the subsonic filter, with a range of 5Hz to 40Hz.
  • Bass EQ: Provides a boost at 45Hz, with a range of 0 to +12dB.

Subwoofer Enclosure: The Alpine 10" subwoofer enclosure can provide deep accurate bass, while not taking up any usable space in the vehicle. The enclosure is shaped to sit underneath the passenger's seat and is held in place with the factory seat brackets.

SPV-65X-WRA: The Alpine system includes both front and rear component speaker sets featuring 6-1/2" woofers and 1" Teteron tweeters. The two component speaker sets provide full clear sound for front and rear locations, even with the Jeep's top off.

Mounting: Both the 4-channel amplifier and the subwoofer amp come pre-attached to the included mounting bracket, and are designed to fit underneath the driver's side dash panel. The 10-inch subwoofer enclosure gets placed underneath the front passenger side seat and is held in place with the factory seat brackets. The PSS-22WRA is designed so that no usable space in the vehicle is taken up by the sound system. Each of  the SPV-65X-WRA 6-1/2" component speaker sets includes hardware for mounting the woofers into the factory locations, both in the dash as well as in the rear soundbar. Both sets of tweeters also include brackets, allowing them to sit in the factory locations, and include a threaded locking collar that allows them to quickly and easily attach to the brackets. The brackets, in turn, mount directly to the factory screw holes used by the factory tweeters.

Q
I have had this system for about a year and now when I get in my vehicle after a couple of days all other speakers work except the dash tweeters then when I drive for a bit the tweeters start to work and I have looked at connections and they all seem fine?

Q
can i add an extra powered subwoofer to the pss-22wra system?
litldougy  Apr 04, 2023
1 answer
A
The Alpine PSS-22WRA is a complete package including a t-harness specifically for the speakers and sub in this set to make this easier to integrate with your stock system. You could technically add another powered sub, but it will have to get wired in separately from this system.

Q
I have a 2016 jku with the pss-22wra system and it is amazing. But now I want a subwoofer for under the driver front seat????
litldougy  Mar 11, 2023
1 answer
A
That is a great idea for more bass, Doug! The Alpine SBV-10-WRA weather-resistant subwoofer enclosure is only a fit for under the passenger seat, Doug. Depending on how much space you have under the driver's seat, you may be able to use the universal Alpine PWE-S8 in the link below! For more bass output than the Alpine, you could also consider using the JL Stealthbox on the driver's rear and use an additional amp to power it! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500PWES8/Alpine-PWE-S8.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_13694606/JL-Audio-Stealthbox-Black-Drivers-Side.html

This system can work with that Alpine radio as well as other brands/models as long as the radio is installed using the wiring interfaces made to help install radios into your Jeep.

Q
Just got all this and began to take apart the front left speaker and realize there is a factory Infiniti amp there? My jeep doesn't have the sun in the back but has the Infinity amp? What do I do with that wiring harness connected to that?
pakman  May 13, 2021
1 answer
A
Hey Pakman, I think you can pull all of that out. This Alpine PSS-22WRA has a wiring harness for this amp and stock radio. If you upgraded the radio the direction should explain what you need to do next. Crutfield or Alpine can give you more specifics. They are really good about helping the do-it-yourselfer. Good Luck, Kimmar

Q
why will this not work with the with Infinity Audio System? I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with factory sub. Can you by pass factory system to make this work?
michael  Jan 08, 2021
3 answers
A
I just installed it last week in my 2013 Rubicon that had the premium sound. You can bypass to get the front and rear speakers to work. I had to build a new harness to connect the old amp wiring to the new amp wiring. I worked with a great technical advisor from Crutchfiled that assisted me with the pin out for the old amp wiring harness. Ask for Nolan Wood.
forrest  Jan 12, 2021
A
I believe you have this system. It comes with an amp and a sub woofer and several upgraded speakers. I think you can just but the amp separately.
kimberly marie  Jan 08, 2021
A
Jeeps with the Infinity system have a different wiring harness to accommodate the factory amplifiers. I missed this when I purchased the Alpine system. I had to splice the factory harness in to the Alpine provided harness. This required getting speaker wire and waterproof splicing connectors from the hardware store and running 8 new lines from the Alpine amplifiers under the drivers side dash to the back of the head unit. Alpine was able to give me a wiring guide to help me get it to work. I did it but there was a terrible buzz in the system that I couldn't fix. Eventually had to bring it to a car stereo installation shop to fix my work. I am not sure if the problem was with my splicing or if I didn't properly ground the unit but once I got it back from the shop the radio sounded awesome. I bought this with an Alpine i209 head unit. Definitely a huge improvement over the Stock Infinity. (oh. and I yanked out the Infinity woofer and replaced it with the Woofer delete kit from MOPAR. Added room to the trunk is nice, too).

Q
I've heard there is updated amp setting recommendations. Is there a link to this? Also, polyfill is suggested before mounting speakers. Does it make that much difference?
bobby  Dec 28, 2020
3 answers
A
No idea if there is an "updated" amp setting recommendation but the recommended settings that came in my manual made it sound horrible. Alpine's website has or at least had different settings than the manual & it sounded much better than the settings in the manual. I'm not sure if the poly fill makes that much of a difference since it's a Jeep but I added it. Might be noticeable while parked in your garage with the top up and doors on but I doubt it'll be noticeable with the top down or even while driving. Wranglers are excessively noisy vehicles!
matthew  Dec 28, 2020
A
Yes, pollyfill is a must. As for the amp settings updates, I do not know. I am very disappointed with the system. Building my own from scratch.

I think it does since everything is powered by the amps, but I'd recommend you just call Alpine and see what they say. I'd guess you just run the speaker output to the amplifier in the alpine system but always best to confirm beforehand.
william  Oct 14, 2020
A
Yes. It will work with the factory head unit. I ended up replacing with the alpine unit down the road.
jon  Oct 14, 2020
A
I have the same, you can installed to the factory head unit. It is made to fit it. But just a recommendation, the quality sound is not worth it for that price. You can a lot more quality for less. I'm disappointed.
maximiliano  Oct 14, 2020
A
Yes. It comes with a wiring harness that utilizes factory plugs and original speaker wire.

Q
I have a 2014 with the OEM sub in the back- can I install this and just disconnect the OEM sub? Sorry - question asked before but conflicting answers.
brian  Sep 15, 2020
1 answer
A
This upgrade isn't compatible with the factory Alpine system which is the one in the Jeep when there is a factory installed subwoofer. I wish I had different news for you there. As for the location the sub in this system gets installed into, it mounts underneath the passenger's seat and is held in place with the factory seat brackets.

Unfortunately we do not have the information available to be able to confirm fitment of the Alpine PSS-22WRA upgrades in a right hand drive Jeep. You will likely not have any issues with that fitment, however, you may want to reach out to Alpine directly, or contact your dealership for possible wiring information in regards to any major differences in wiring in left hand drive vs right hand drive vehicles.

Is there a way to modify this to make it work in a manual transmission model?
tom  Sep 16, 2019

I did install this in a 2016 jku with manual transmission. You just need to find an alternate mounting location for the amps.. I zip tied the pair right under the steering wheel behind the kick panel and it worked great.
jonathan  Sep 01, 2020
A
I really can't answer for sure without looking under the dash of a manual JK. I could see there being space claim issues with the amps and a clutch pedal, brackets and cables and all. The amps mount pretty much right behind the front driver side speaker enclosure. I had issues with what turned out to be bad amp settings in the instructions that come with the kit. Crutchfield gave me a phone number for Alpine and they were very helpful. They may have info that could help answer your question too.
shane  Sep 17, 2019

I don't see why it would not work. Wiring for sub runs under center console, might be different for a manual.

I misread, If it has the premium sound systems (alpine sub enclosure in the back) then no. If it doesn't have that then yes
kaitlin  Jul 30, 2019
A
Yes, I have a 2014 JKU myself and after research it will fit easily. Mind you this system comes with a sub as well so it would replace your Alpine one or you could keep yours in if needed
kaitlin  Jul 24, 2019
A
It should fit perfectly into the factory locations, and the sound quality is AMAZING even with my top off it like I'm at the Concert in the Front Row in VIP. If I had to rank it out of 5 stars it 6 STARS, ALPINE knocked it out of the park. Perfectly designed for the Jeep Adventure Top on or Top off you will have high quality sound for what ever music you would like to listen too. The only issue you will have is the sub location in the back of your 2013 JK will be wasted space because the sub is installed under the Passenger seat.

It comes with RCA adapters that plug into the harness so it will definitely work with aftermarket head units. Hope this helps
philip  Mar 27, 2019

They have been modified to connect to the factory head unit. It was truly plug and play, at times was very hard to get under the dash and mount the cables under the steering wheel column where the amps go, but all the cables were direct connect from the 2 amps into the factory non alpine head unit.

Q
I have seen a few reviews state that the system did not come with a remote bass adjustment knob, and the amp/sub did not work properly. Does the system now come with the dash mount bass knob, and have issues with the subwoofer functioning been resolved?

A
I checked the manual and seen that it does come with a remote bass knob. Typically, Alpine gear works properly, but no company is perfect. We have so few issues from their gear that we trust them. But as with all the gear we carry, we offer technical support for setup and troubleshooting too that can help you with any issues that come up. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

My system did come with the amp/sub bass knob, but did not work properly, so called crutch filed, and they sent a part to fix, that part didn't fix it, so called back, and they actually sent me a whole new system, so I did the troubleshooting one part at a time, and it wasn't the bass knob that was the issue for me, it was the sub. After I replaced the sub it worked perfect.

Q
Will this fit in a 2 door? I realize not all the speakers are compatible but some are. The dash tweeters and roof speakers would work right??

You can check to see if this will fit your vehicle by using our Outfit My Car tool: http://www.crutchfield.com/car/carselector.aspx For additional details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle.
