Product Research

Features

Overview: The Alpine PXE-0850S Advanced Wireless Digital Sound Processor lets you customize your vehicle's sound system for the best sound quality and sound staging. The processor can be used with a factory system, or with and Alpine or other brand of head unit. With 31 bands of independent equalization per channel and multiple crossovers, the processor can help you dial in the sound that's right for your vehicle. It has 6-channels of high- or low-level input from your factory or aftermarket head unit, with 8 speaker outputs and 12 preamp outputs. The PXE-0850S can connect to a Windows PC via USB, a Bluetooth-connected smartphone, or the included Remote Commander for making all your adjustments. The processor comes with a power/ground/speaker input harness, two speaker output harnesses, and a USB 3.0 interface cable.

Construction: The PXE-0850S is equipped with a Texas Instruments 32-bit DSP with 300MHz floating point processor, and a TI 24-bit premium A/D and D/A converter. The unit lets you take up to six independent signals (low, mids, and highs per side, for example) and combine them into a full range signal. This full range signal can be sent to up to 12 independent channels for an extremely versatile system.

Inputs: The processor features six channels of speaker-level inputs on the included harness and 3 pairs of RCA line level inputs on the unit. In addition, the PXE-0850S has optical (Toslink) and coaxial (RCA) S/PDIF digital inputs to play music from an in-vehicle CD or DVD, and an external Bluetooth module for connecting your smartphone.

Outputs: The PXE-0850S has 25 watts RMS output per channel x 8 channels for powering multiple pairs of speakers. It also has 12 channels of preamp level outputs. The signal of the speaker outputs mirror the first 8 RCA output channels.

User Interface Options: The Alpine PXE-0850S Digital Sound Processor can be controlled in three different ways:

  • Mobile Phone App: The Alpine PXE-DSP-APP application lets you control the processor from your smartphone or tablet. The smart device connects via Bluetooth through the included External Bluetooth interface. The PXE-DSP-APP allows you to adjust the Master Volume, Switch the Output Channels to adjust, Set the EQ curve, Q-value, and Frequency Tuning, Set the Crossovers, Set the Delay, and Set the Audio Output Mixing. The app is compatible with Apple devices running iOS 8.0 or later, and Android devices with version 4.0 and up.
  • PC Software: You can connect a PC to the processor via the included USB 3.0 cable. The functions of the PC software are the same as the Mobile Phone app. The graphic displays on the PC are much more detailed than the Mobile Phone App. The PC software runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
  • Wired Controller: The included Remote Commander has limited control via its large rotary control and 1-3/8" display. The Remote Commander can adjust the Master Volume, switch the audio input source (S/PDIF, Hi.Level, Phone (Bluetooth), Aux (low level)), and set and recall the Preset Sound Effects. Further detailed settings must be made through the Mobile Phone App or PC Software.

Equalization: The PXE-0850S features 31-bands of independent equalization per channel, with both parametric and graphic EQs. In the Parametric EQ, you can adjust the frequencies between 20Hz and 20kHz. In the Graphic EQ, the frequency bands are set 1/3-octave intervals at 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, 800, 1000, 1250, 1600, 2000, 2500, 3150, 4000, 5000, 6300, 8000, 10000, 12500, 16000, and 20000 Hz. The slope (or Q value) is adjustable between 0.404 and 28.85 in 0.01 increments. The gain of each band can be increased or decreased by up to 12dB in 0.1dB increments.

Crossovers: Each output is equipped with independent high- and low-pass filters. Bandpass filters can also be configured. For each channel, you can select the type of filter - Butterworth, Linkwitz-Riley, or Bessel. Crossover points are fully adjustable from 20Hz to 20kHz in 1Hz increments. You can choose from the following crossover slopes: 12dB, 18dB, 24dB, 30dB, 36dB, 42dB, or 48dB per octave.

Time Correction/Phase: The PXE-0850S can apply a wide degree of time correction to each of the 12 channels of output: Left and right front (low, mid, tweeter), Center, Left and right rear (mid, tweeter), and Subwoofer. You can choose the amount of delay in milliseconds (0.000 to 20), centimeters (0.00 to 692 cm) or inches (0.00 to 273"). The phase of each output can be set to positive (0°) or inverted (180°).

Presets: After you have set the EQ frequency, Q-value, and gain data, delay, channel, and phase position settings to your liking, you can save them to one of up to six different sound presets. This allows you to make different sound settings for each input type or music genre.

Protected Settings: Current settings can be protected by a six-digit password. The values of the 31-band EQ frequency, Q-value, and gain data, delay, channel, and phase settings are encrypted to prevent accidental changes or deliberate tampering with the settings.

Q
Would this work as a replacement to replace my jbl powered system amp thats in my 19 tundra?
devon  Oct 07, 2020
3 answers
A
I don't currently use the amplifier section of this unit. The real power output of it is close to that of your typical head unit.
jody  Oct 08, 2020
A
It could but the built-in amp is very low powered. Best used for tweeters or up to 3" high-mids. But not well suited for larger mid-bass or bass drivers. Better to have a separate amp for those.
seth g  Oct 08, 2020
A
More than likely "yes" as it probably has the same power. But this is really meant for those that want to add a serious after market system without having to change out the OEM radio. Some one that uses this would add several Amps, after market speakers and subwoofers. This can definitely be the first step in that process if you want to buy this and stay with OEM speakers for a month to save up money for the rest of the system.

Q
I have the JL Audio C5-653 and C5-650x. Will I need the crossovers that came with them or can I use this only and not use the crossovers?

We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question.

Q
Can I get 25 watts through the rca jack through an adapter or is it only through the high level outputs?
jose  Sep 18, 2019
4 answers
A
It's only through the high level inputs.
greg  Sep 19, 2019
A
The RCA labeled PRE OUTPUT are pre-amp out only. The harness connection labeled SP OUT is the speaker out and is the 25W output. To my knowledge this is hardwired and can not be changed
william  Sep 19, 2019
A
I believe you can get the 25 watts through the rca jacks. I run my unit through amplifiers and do not use the built in power from the unit. I love my processor and the ability to shap your music just the way you like is awesome! Enjoy your processor and play with it until you get your music just the way you want!
robert  Sep 19, 2019
A
The 25x8 is strictly through the high level output. If you use all 8, then you have 4 RCA outputs to work with.
robert  Sep 19, 2019
Q
Can one main input control 6 different channels?
patrick s  Aug 08, 2019
3 answers
A
Yes, There is a "mixer" section in the software. You first select and input source, (bluetooth,HiLevel, AUX1-6 or SPDIF) Next select a channel and there are sliders that allow you to control the level that the selected input is sent to that channel. search of PXE_0850S software and download from Alpine's site. You can run the software on a PC and you will be able to see the capabilities. About the only limitation that I have found is the you can only select one input source at a time. e.g. you can not have HiLevel and AUX at the same time About the only issue that I have found is that both the phone app and the PC volume goes to 60 and the controller goes to 66. This is not just a numbering issue the 66 from the controller is louder than the 60 from the software. Overall a very impressive unit
william  Aug 12, 2019
A
Yes it can, however you won't have fade/balance control. If using rear fill, you may want to use the high level inputs for front and rear. If your interested in the unit I recommend downloading the DSP software to familiarize yourself with it. Compared to other DSPs, the biggest points are the 12 outputs and 31 band graphic/parametric eq. Everything I I have is Alpine except my speakers, this was the final piece, and the fine tuning can get elaborate.
robert  Aug 08, 2019
A
Yes. Each output channel (12 total) can specify which input channel(s) it will receive and the level from each input. The mixing can be individually configured for each input source (digital, RCA, Bluetooth, etc). The only limitation is that you cannot time align the input signals (pre-processing) which is only an issue if attempting to reconstruct a full range signal from multiple crossed-over input signals that have signal delays already applied. Output channels can be fully time aligned 0-20ms. If you want to take a full range stereo signal you can easily split it into 12 output channels, 8 of which are mirrored on both RCA and amplified outputs.

Q
I am considering using this processor , will it sum the audio signals coming out after a Mark Levinson amplifier (Lexus GS350 2018)? I am pretty sure the ML amp has built in crossovers and they go to the factory tweeters and midbass and subwoofer. I also will be adding a 4-ch. and a dedicated sub amplifier, then go to new front and rear speakers and a dual 10" sub box. Will I retain fader? Thanks

With your vehicle, and the complex set up you are seeking, I would highly recommend you get in touch with one of our Advisors! https://www.crutchfield.com/support/ContactUs.aspx
thomas  May 06, 2019 (Staff)
A
I am not 100% sure about the "summing" capabilities of this awesome DSP, but I'm pretty sure you can. I believe Alpine calls it "audio mixing". I'd advise you to download both user manuals from the Alpine website which may help you with this question. Now one thing I can give you some advise regarding an aftermarket amp, I highly suggest getting the Alpine PDX-V9 5-channel! It isn't going to win SPL contests, but for it's size it packs one heck of a punch, and they are as clear sounding of an amp I have ever owned. And I've owned some good ones. The RMS ratings are always much more on these amps than stated as mine is 128rms x 4 + 586rms x 1. FWIW, the PDX-V9 is very similar to the JL Audio FD900/5. Save yourself $600.00 and go with the much more reliable/powerful PDX-V9! You will not be disappointed...

I've looked through all the information we have on it, the manual, Alpine's site, and a few other online sites but cannot find any information on the Bluetooth codec's. Because of this, I recommend contacting Alpine on 800-257-4631 to see if that have the specifics on the codecs My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

My factory speakers are all 2 Ohm. Can this amp handle 2 Ohm? If it can, do I get 50 W per channel instead of 25 W?
scott  Oct 27, 2018

A
I've searched all our information on it as well as Alpine's site but found no mention of 2 ohms. I expect that much like a head unit, it will work with 2 ohm speakers and that you won't get any extra power My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Q
Can I use this on my 17 mb c300 instead of a jl audio fix and dsp amp?
jeffrey  Sep 09, 2018
1 answer
A
Those 2017 C300's have an amp in them that separates the audio that goes to each speaker and that means you will need something to sum with signals together to install an amp to that stock system. Something like the JL Audio Fix is needed, but I should also mention that some DSP amps have the ability to sum the signals. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 to discuss your goals and see if any of those DPS amps with built-in signal summing will work for you My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

Q
Would 25 watts be plenty of power for a tweeter? I'm not really a fan of dedicating 100 w x 2 channels to just the tweeters. If 25 watt rms is more than plenty to drive a tweeter, this processor would be great for an Active setup.
matthew  Jul 14, 2018
1 answer
A
Generally speaking; tweeters do not require a lot of wattage. Having said that; it depends on the specific tweeter model and it's specifications. Q
Does this processor, the Alpine PXE-0850S, have center processing or is it just a sum of some other channels? Like the H800 or not?
sterlingt  Jun 25, 2018

A
It has center channel processing when sending in audio using its multi-channel input and digital audio inputs. It will have to create center channel audio when fed a 2 channel audio signal My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=101
