About the Alpine S-A60M

Buck Pomerantz

Big bass power from a small package

Alpine makes it a little easier to get great bass in your vehicle, especially if you drive a compact car. Their S-Series S-A60M mono subwoofer amplifier can deliver up to 600 watts RMS to your sub, guaranteeing some powerful bass on your drive. And Alpine made this amp so small — it's got less than an 8" by 8" footprint and it's just over 2" tall — it can fit almost anywhere.

Technology that keeps you on the air

Enhanced Shutdown Performance technology rolls back the output a bit when the amp threatens to overheat from playing at its limits too long. Instead of shutting down completely, it continues playing your music, until it cools enough to return to full power.

Convenient features

A low-pass filter and adjustable bass boost put you in command of the frequencies that reach your subs. The amp includes preamp- and speaker-level inputs, so you can install it in almost any vehicle, even one with a factory radio. If you're using the speaker-level inputs, the amp senses an incoming signal and turns itself on, eliminating the need to run a turn-on wire back to your vehicle's receiver or fuse box. An optional wired remote lets you control bass level from the driver's seat.

Product Research

Features

CTA-2006 Compliant: CTA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring amplifier power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CTA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CTA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output: 330 watts RMS x 1
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 85 dBA (measured at 1 watt into 4Ω)

Other Specifications:

  • Power Output: 600 watts RMS x 1 into 2 Ω (14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD+N)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 105 dB (at rated power output, into 4Ω)
  • THD+N:
    • at 10 watts into 4Ω: ≤0.03%
    • at 10 watts into 2Ω: ≤0.05%
    • at Rated Power into 4Ω: ≤0.2%
    • at Rated Power into 2Ω: ≤1%
  • Frequency Response:
    • +0/-3 dB (1W into 4Ω): 10 Hz - 400 Hz
    • +0/-1 dB (1W into 4Ω): 20 Hz - 300 Hz

Optional Remote Control: The amplifier has an RJ-25 jack for adding the optional RUX-KNOB.2 wired remote bass level control to adjust the output level. The remote has a 20dB adjustment range (-20 dB to 0 dB relative to the gain setting).

Speaker Level Input: The RCA input jacks can be used for preamp level or speaker level input signals. If connecting the source unit's speaker wire to the input jacks, use a Speaker-to-RCA adapter or splice speaker wire to an RCA plug. When using a speaker level input signal, it may not be necessary to connect a remote turn-on lead because of the amplifier's remote sensing function.

Pre-Output: A second pair of RCA jacks provides a line level output for sending a signal to another amplifier. The output matches the input signal (4 volt max), and is not affected by the amplifier's crossover.

Controls:

  • Input Level: 2-position switch; Hi/Lo
  • Gain: rotary control; adjustment range depends on the input level switch setting; 200mV to 4V (Lo) or 500mV to 10V (Hi)
  • Frequency: rotary control for low pass crossover point; variable from 50 Hz to 400 Hz
  • Bass EQ: rotary bass boost control; variable from 0 to +12dB, centered at 50 Hz

Connections:

  • RCA Inputs: one pair of stereo RCA inputs
  • RCA Outputs: one pair of stereo RCA outputs
  • Speaker Outputs: one pair of set-screw terminals; the terminals will accept up to 8-gauge wire; the included 2mm Allen wrench is used to tighten/loosen the set screws
  • Power: set-screw terminal; accepts up to 4-gauge wire; the included 2mm Allen wrench is used to tighten/loosen the set screws
  • Ground: set-screw terminal; accepts up to 4-gauge wire; the included 2mm Allen wrench is used to tighten/loosen the set screws
  • Remote Turn-on: set-screw terminal; accepts up to 8-gauge wire; the included 2mm Allen wrench is used to tighten/loosen the set screws
  • Remote: RJ-25 jack for the RUX-KNOB.2 remote bass level controller
  • Fuses: two 30-amp ATO fuses are mounted on the side of the amp

Q
Will an alpine S Dash A 60 M work on a 10 inch Rockford Fosgate P3 two ohm dual voice coil?
harley dave  Apr 22, 2023
1 answer
A
The Alpine can work well with the 10" Rockford P3 2-ohm dual voice coil subwoofer when wired together properly. The single speaker can be wired to present a 4-ohm load to the Alpine and deliver around 330-watts. I would suggest swapping to the P3D4-10 4-ohm model in the link below that can be wired to 2-ohms and get the full 600-watts RMS out of the Alpine S-A60M. If you are looking for the most bass performance out of your setup, it's an easy call! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_5751P3D410/Rockford-Fosgate-P3D4-10.html

Q
Will this pair well with the Kicker Dual CompR 10s? They are 2 OHM Dual Voice Coils. I have the LC2i Pro going with it as well. Going in a 2014 Tahoe with the factory Bose system in it.
dez  Apr 08, 2023
1 answer
A
I would be happy to help Dez, it sounds like a nice setup! The Kicker CompR 10" in 2-ohm Dual voice coil in the link below would be a good match as a pair to power with the Alpine S-A60M. 600-watts RMS delivered to the Kickers is great for performance while not overdriving the pairs 800-watts RMS maximum. The LC2i pro is a great call for bass restoration processing, and the Alpine S-A60M amp is one of my personal favorites, with performance per dollar that is almost unbeatable! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_20648CR102/Kicker-48CWR102.html

Q
What size are the power and ground set screws?
drew  Jan 07, 2023
1 answer
A
That is a great question, Drew. If you have lost or misplaced those set screws and need to source a match that can be very frustrating! The size and thread pitch on the power and ground set screw terminals is not listed by Alpine, sadly. If you ever need Alpine replacement parts, the handy link below to pacparts.com is the best bet. I checked, and they sadly do not have the power and ground terminal screw replacements either. Carefully sourcing one locally that is the correct size and pitch is potentially a good route to take, I hope this helps! https://www.pacparts.com/

Q
Does this amp need a line out converter? I will be running this on a honda civic type r 10th gen head unit.
christina  Dec 04, 2022
1 answer
A
Technically this Alpine S-A60M does not need one as it does have a speaker-level input capability, Christian. You can connect and get great bass without it, but you could use a line out converter with processing to restore the missing bass called "bass roll-off" built into almost every factory radio. This really depends on many factors, your personal listening tastes and the overall total performance you have in mind for your subwoofer being the main factor in deciding. If you want to get the most from your subwoofer using something like the Wavtech LinkDQ 2-channel converter in the below link would be a great way to restore some of that missing bass. These units are active so they do need to be wired for power and ground, but they can make a big difference on sound! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_241LINKDQ/Wamacr-vtech-linkDQ.html

Q
Should(can) I use the AudioControl LC2i PRO with this? If so how do you power it at that point?
patrick  Jul 30, 2022
1 answer
A
Yeah you can but that is a little much for a mono amp, you only need one channel not two if you are only adding subs it would probably be better to use a single channel LOC.

Q
I have a 1100 watt 4 ohm sub do I need to do anything to run this sub with amp?
matt  Nov 24, 2021
1 answer
A
Purchase a different amplifier. The sub will be receiving 330 watts which isn't much for the 1100 watt sub. The larger the amp the larger the bass will sound regardless of volume. That has been my experience with underpowering subs. For some reason todays subs impedance is lower and lower making 4 ohms a thing of the past

Q
Can I run two 10' subs and door speakers on this one amp or do I need to get a second amp for the door speakers?
brandon  Oct 05, 2021
1 answer
A
The amp (Alpine S-A60M) is a mono amp rated at 300x1 at 4 ohms or 600x1 at 2 ohms; therefore, I would not recommend running four speakers off of it at once. The two tens may be okay if they are single voice coil rated for four ohms. Also, you would be better off using a crossover for the subs (low frequencies only), whereas the door speakers should get highpass or full range frequency. You could get a second amp or run the door speakers off of the head unit. Check the owner's manual for the recommended wiring configurations.

Can I run two S-A60M amps for two sW12d2 subs?
ryan  Aug 20, 2021

Short answer - yes My suggestion - get a better amp because this one is not powerful at all Also, if you want to run 2 subs, just get one larger amp and it will power both just fine. This makes the installation and wiring much wasier and cleaner looking

Q
My HU RCA output put out 5v.Shoul I use the hi or low setting input? The specs said low input is 2 to 4v.
ivan  Aug 06, 2021
1 answer
A
Either can be used because amps are capable of handling up to 2 times their top voltage input rating. The deciding factor should be the output audio. If the audio is clipping on low level even with gain adjusted, then switch to high level.

Will other bass control knobs work with this amp? Asking because the one I just installed (Skar Audio SKv1 Amplifier Series Replacement Bass Knob Control Package) doesn't seem to work...
seanpaul  Apr 23, 2021

Yes and no. Sorry for the delay in answering. I borrowed my friends rockford fosgate punch bass knob and installed it. It does control the bass level but the polarity is reversed. When i turn the knob to min its at max and when i turn it towards max its min. I recommend getting the alpine knob because you will know it works for sure.

Q
Is this amp strong enough to power a Skar SDR-15?
walter  Feb 27, 2021
1 answer
A
The RMS rating for the Alpine S-A60M is 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms and the RMS for the Skar SDR-15 is also 600 watts. So, yes, the amp is a good match for that sub. Make sure that you wire it in 2 ohms and get the box dimensions right for either ported or sealed enclosure.
jason  Mar 01, 2021
Q
Can u run 6x9s to this amplifier?
booda  Feb 03, 2021

I would go with a multichannel amp for running separate speakers. This is a single (mono) channel amp intended for single speakers like subs.

Q
How do you get it to run the full 600 watts at 2ohms? I have a single 12" infinity kappa 1200 (rms 600) that can run on 2 ohms and I would like to do so and push the sub hard ive got a Rockford amp only running 300 bridged at 4ohms looking to get a new amp and I like this one.
nicholas  Jan 09, 2021
1 answer
A
The amplifier will see either a 4 or 2 ohm load based on how the sub or subs are connected; series or parallel. If I did my research correctly, the Infinity Kappa has a selectable 4 or 2ohm switch; therefore, set it to 2 ohms and the amp should output at the 2 ohm ratings. Check the owner's manual on the sub and amp for wiring configuration.
jason  Jan 10, 2021
1 answer
A
First, you'll need to know if your sub is a 2 ohm sub or a 4 ohm sub. If it's a 4ohm sub there is no way to hook it up to get the full power at 2ohms with just a single sub. If it's a 2 ohm sub you're in luck. Crutchfield has a sub wiring calculator (search on a search engine "sub wiring diagram, crutchfield" and it will pop up. It lets you select number of subs, ohm ratings, etc. to help you configure accordingly.

The Alpine has a built-in crossover what if I plan to use a DSP how do I disable the crossover there is no button for this. Can I remove the cover and disable it and bypassing the crossover in some way?
jim  Dec 27, 2020

A
Not that i know of. I just hooked this up with pre amped rcas from a kenwood hu. This amp does have low pass filter and bass gain switches, so maybe play with those until u get the preferred sound quality u want.

Q
I have an alpine type s 10" sub, will the alpine s-a60m be enough to power it to its full potential?
dczaj98  Nov 30, 2020
3 answers
A
It should as long as your sub is 2ohm. The a-60m pushes 600watts at 2ohms and the 2ohm version of your sub if I'm not mistaken is rms 600 watts @ 2ohm. Check what your sub is as far as ohm and also check if you have single or dual voice coils because you could always wire them up differently.
jason  Dec 01, 2020
A
This amp will be plenty to rock your 10". I run a Rockford 12" with it and it does great. The Alpine type S 10" handles up to 600 W and this would be a great pair.
adam  Nov 30, 2020
A
They're both rated 600W RMS so that should work just fine. Though I doubt you'll have it at max very often anyway, as that's quite loud.

Q
can I connect two subs to this amp?
carlos  Oct 17, 2020
4 answers
A
Yes, I have 2 MTX 5500 series speakers hooked to this amp. Works so good
jeremy  Oct 17, 2020
A
Yes, as long as the total sub impedance does not go below 2-ohms. So you can do 2 40ohm subs in parallel and be good at 2-ohms
susie  Oct 17, 2020
A
Yes, you could connect two subs to this amp. Remember, it is a single channel; therefore, the output power would be divided by two to the subs. Also, look at the ohm rating and whether the subs are in series or parallel. The wiring decides the ohm rating.
jason  Oct 17, 2020
A
Yes you can, as long as your load doesn't drop below 2 ohms

Q
I have a single rockford fosgate p3d4-12 sub, it is 4 ohm dual voice coil, will this amp be enough to power it?
herbert  Aug 26, 2020
1 answer
A
I think the simple answer is yes. But like anything in Aftermarket audio gear there are some things to considerate. I strongly suggest you stay away from this amp simply because I feel it is too weak for your needs. The sub you want is a 4ohm Speaker with 600w rms. This anp only gives about 330w at 4ohm rms so you will not be pushing your sub to its full ability. Either you get a 2ohm version of the sub or get a different amp.
wing hong  Aug 26, 2020
Q
I have the rockford fosgate p3d2-12 and the alpine s-a60m amp. Id like to know how to wire my sub properly to 2 ohms to match the 2 ohms on this amp is capable of?

I use a 2-ohm sub with this amp. There may be some other acceptable configurations as well, not sure.

I'm running 1 Rockford 12" sub with this amp and it sounds great. Go with 2 ohm to get the most out of the amp.

As long as the sub are dual voice coil then I'd suggest the 2ohm option as you could always wire in a 4ohm configuration if need be!

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
When using the bass boost dial option for the alpine s-a60m, do I set bass eq to +12?
hanks  Jul 16, 2019

A
There is no right or wrong answer here because that can work as long as you are not hearing distortion or anything bad when the Bass EQ is set to that level. That being said you will want to set the Bass EQ to the level you want to use because the knob lets you adjust from that level and down as much as -20db My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul
