About the Alpine X-W12D4

Bob Bihlmayer

Built to take it

Alpine redesigns their X-Series subwoofers to deliver even more impressive performance. The X-W12D4 12" subwoofer handles up to 900 watts RMS, so don't hesitate to give it plenty of juice. This rugged sub features a pulp/mica cone with a parabolic shape that maintains its rigidity and strength for outstanding response and accuracy. The big rubber surround supports the cone in the sub's cast aluminum frame, while Alpine's latest technology allows this sub to move an amazing amount of air (28mm Xmax, for you bass geeks out there) at very high levels while staying cool.

Versatility

You can wire the dual 4-ohm voice coils to get the optimum performance from your amp, or to configure a custom setup with multiple subwoofers. The X-W12D4 works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Product Research

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 4Ω voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2Ω load; when wired in series, the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

HAMR: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll (HAMR) Surround, made of rubber, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMR design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Dual Progressive Spider: The dual progressive spiders have integrated tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm) dual voice coils are wound on an aluminum former.

Terminals: The set screw terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Jumper Plug: A jumper plug on the terminal block allows you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2Ω load) or series (for an 8Ω load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box volume ranges from 0.52 ft³ to 1.37 ft³, with 0.97 ft³ being the ideal size. (Most volumes in the manual are given as net, before accounting for the displacement of the subwoofer when installed.)

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 1.12 ft³ to 2.12 ft³. The ideal size is 1.77 ft³, using a slot port measuring 3.75" (Width) x 4" (Height) x 18" (Length). (Most volumes in the manual are given as net, before accounting for the displacement of the subwoofer and slot port.)

Customer Q&A

10 questions already asked

Q
The alpine type x subwoofer is 4 ohms, 900 watts rms. so should I use the Rockford Fosgate T1500-1bdCP amplifier, rated at 1000 watts @ 4 ohms, or the Alpine X-A90M , rated at 600 watts rms @ 4 ohms?
chase  Oct 13, 2022
1 answer
A
This is a little trickier here Chase, due to the fact this is a dual voice coil sub. That essentially means if you are running a single we can treat it as a 2 ohm speaker. I feel like the X-A90m is a perfect match for a single Type X sub, hits the nail on the head right at 900 watts! We show the sweet X-A90M as recently discontinued, so if you need an in stock option the R-A75M is a good contender from Alpine delivering 750 watts RMS to 2 ohms. I've put the link below for you! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_500RA75M/Alpine-R-A75M.html

Q
What would be the best box for 2 alpine type x woofers?
chase  Oct 12, 2022
1 answer
A
That is a great question Chase, and it does depend a little bit on your personal preferences and overall goals for your setup. The Alpine's Efficiency Bandwidth Product is 44, indicating the better enclosure choice is sealed. You could choose to run these in a slot ported enclosure for the most outright SPL and Bass output, but for peak performance and ideal situations sealed is the call. This will provide tight, accurate and musical bass. The recommended sealed box volume ranges from 0.52 ft³ to 1.37 ft³, with 0.97 ft³ being the ideal size. Now keep in mind this is a "net" measurement, so you'll have to add a little bit of space to your calculations to cover the displacement of the huge magnet and basket if you are building your own box. IF you want to hit the easy button on fabrication work this SPL SB212 is pretty darn close to exactly what you need space wise for ideal performance. With this box and a pair of Type X's you could potentially use 1800 watts of RMS power, and that would be a pretty impressive sound! I hope this helps. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_419SB212/SPL-Boxes-SB212.html

Q
what would be the best amp for a alpine type x woofer?
xavier  Sep 13, 2022
1 answer
A
The most direct amp for that subwoofer would be the Alpine X-A90M if you wanted to stick with the same brand. If you are ok going with other brands then the Rockford Fosgate T1000 would also be a good match which I will link below. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_57510001CP/Rockford-Fosgate-T1000-1bdCP.html?tp=35834

Q
Will this subwoofer work well in a 1.375 net cubic feet sealed enclosure that is for a JL Audio 12W7 AE, or is this enclosure too big for this woofer?
lanny  Jul 27, 2021

A
Thanks for your replies so far. I'm still not sure what size I will use
lanny  Jul 31, 2021
A
That is slightly over the biggest sealed box volume that this subwoofer should be used in. We do not recommend using that box. This sub's maximum sealed box volume should not exceed 1.37 cubic feet with the ideal box volume being 0.97 cubic feet internal air space
jason  Jul 31, 2021 (Staff)
A
Im going to say, absolutely not! That sub should sound really good with that air space. I ran one type X in 3.00 feet of air,, that was ported. And it sounded amazing!

Q
Does this woofer have the same screw pattern as the Type R-W12D2, or will my enclosure baffle have to be re-drilled if I replace my Type R with this woofer?
lanny  Sep 30, 2020
1 answer
A
Same doesn't have to be redrilled. But if needed it isn't a problem just rotate a few degrees and all is good
chad  Sep 30, 2020
Q
Will this Alpine Type X woofer mount where a Type R has been mounted on an enclosure baffle, or will the screw holes be in a different location and/or different distance and have to be re-drilled?
lanny  Sep 29, 2020
1 answer
A
We will be happy to check and have advisors that you can reach by calling 1-800-324-9695 who will be happy to check if the screw holes for your specific model Type R series subwoofer line up with this Type X model

No I don't think they will
cody  Mar 03, 2019

Hi Arthur, This is a Dual coil 4ohm sub. This sub can be wired to become 2ohm, there is an instructions on how to wire a Dual 4ohm into 2ohm. I have purchased this sub and I am running it in 2ohms. It sounds great and bumps pretty hard...
