About the Sonos Arc

Sonos sound — now in 3D

Sonos makes some of our most popular and well-reviewed sound bars, so I'm really excited to see them expand their lineup with a Dolby Atmos-capable bar like Arc. Its streamlined cabinet houses an impressive eleven drivers, including custom elliptical woofers for rich bass. Side-firing and up-firing speakers team up with advanced signal processing to create a multi-dimensional soundstage full of depth and detail.

Voice control options

Arc has both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant built in, so when you want to play your favourite tunes, all you have to do is ask. And your assistant of choice can do more than just play music. You can ask for weather and traffic updates, create a shopping list, set reminders or alarms, and control connected smart home devices like lights and thermostats — all with your voice.

Don't miss a word

Many of us struggle to hear dialogue over the background noise in our favourite shows and movies. Arc can help with that. In addition to a dedicated centre channel, it has a Speech Enhancement option that can help make dialogue more intelligible, so you don't have to turn on subtitles to keep up with the plot. This feature is accessed in the Sonos app.

Sonos Arc and optional Sonos Sub and surrounds

Add the optional Sonos Sub and surrounds to complete your wireless home theatre.

Wireless home theatre

Arc is going to be a huge improvement to your TV's audio all on its own, but I like that Sonos gives you the option to expand the system as your space and budget allow.

If you want to add more deep bass rumble, pick up a Sonos Sub (Gen 3) (or even two). It will make a big impact on both movies and music.

Add a pair of Sonos One SL speakers as wireless surrounds, and you've got a very robust home theatre system. Everything connects to the Arc wirelessly, too, so you only need to plug them in for power.

Expand to other rooms

As a Sonos speaker, Arc can be part of a larger multi-room audio system. Expand into other rooms by adding a Sonos One or the larger Five, in every room where you want to listen to music. Or, you can even go portable with the more rugged, battery-powered Move. You can set up the players to work on your existing Wi-Fi® network.

Or, you can connect any Sonos speaker to your network router, and Sonos will create its own dedicated wireless network for even better performance. You can also use a Boost to create this network if you can't place a speaker near your router.

My impressions

As a longtime Sonos user, I was really excited to get to try Arc at home. For nearly a week, I happily put it through its paces with all kinds of content. And though my TV is actually slightly too old to pass a Dolby Atmos signal through to Arc, I didn't feel like I was missing out. That's because this bar renders everything it plays with a wide, expansive soundfield.

I'll admit that we sometimes overuse the word "immersive" in this business, but it is a very accurate description of this bar. I tested it with and without the Sub and surrounds, and when I watched the original Batman, I actually had to check the Sonos app several times to make sure I had turned off the surround speakers. It really sounded like bullets were ricocheting all around me in the shootout at Axis Chemicals, and all of that sound was coming from Arc alone.

And while it's clear that Arc was designed with home theatre in mind, it's still a Sonos speaker so music sounds great, too. It's also their widest bar yet with precisely placed driver arrays that get used to create a spacious and engaging soundstage whether you're playing an action film or your favourite music playlist. When I first started testing it, I cranked some Lady Gaga from TIDAL, and my sister came bopping down the stairs like she was sure there was a party starting in the living room.

Easy streaming with AirPlay 2

Sonos Arc has AirPlay 2 built in. That means you can stream audio directly from your compatible Apple devices through your Sonos system.

And if you subscribe to Apple Music®, you can do even more. Use Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV 4K to control Apple Music with voice commands. Tell it what selection or playlist to play — and which Sonos speakers you want it to play through.

Calibrated for your home

If you use the Sonos app on an iOS® device, you can use that iPhone or iPad to optimize Arc's sound quality for the unique acoustics of your room. This feature — called Trueplay — uses the mic built into your iOS device to measure how the sound reflects off your walls and furnishings, and it adjusts Arc's settings accordingly. It even calibrates the height channels.

Compatibility notes

Arc is very easy to get up and running. There is a single HDMI eARC port for connecting it to your TV. If your TV has eARC, you are all set to pass an Atmos signal through to your bar from either a connected Blu-ray player or your device's streaming services.

If your TV doesn't have eARC, you can still get great audio quality, but there are limitations on the types of signals that can pass through to Arc. If your TV is fairly new, there is a good chance that a simple ARC connection will pass the Dolby Digital Plus format that is used by streaming services to deliver an Atmos signal. If you're unsure what formats your TV can pass, check the owner's manual.

Arc will also work with TVs that don't have HDMI thanks to the included HDMI to optical adapter. It will still sound a lot better than your TV, but you will not be able to pass an Atmos signal this way.

High-Performance Multi-Driver Array: The Sonos Arc features eleven high-performance drivers and eleven Class-D amplifiers for crisp highs, dynamic midranges, and surprising bass. The multi-driver array is configured with front, side, and up firing drivers for the ability to playback Dolby Atmos soundtracks. The Sonos Arc is perfect for TV, movies, music, gaming, and more.

  • 3 Precisely Angled Tweeters: Three precisely angled silk-dome tweeters across the front of the soundbar create crisp high frequencies and crystal clear dialogue for the speaker's front left and right channels, as well as its dedicated center channel. the front left and right channel tweeters are angled outward to deliver a more spacious soundstage, while the center channel tweeter directly fires at the main listening position.
  • 8 Elliptical Woofers: Eight elliptical woofers positioned on the front, side, and top of the soundbar ensure faithful playback of midrange and vocal frequencies in addition to rich bass. There are four front firing woofers for the center and front channels, two side firing woofers for the surround channels, and two upward firing woofers for the Dolby Atmos Height channels.
  • 11 Class-D Amplifiers: Each tweeter and woofer is powered by its own dedicated Class-D amplifier. These eleven Class-D digital amplifiers have been specifcially designed to match the soundbar's driver technology, tuned enclosure, and acoustic characters for dynamic, room-filling sound without distortion at any volume level.

Dolby Atmos: The Sonos Arc supports increased bandwidth and utilizes upward firing speaker drivers that act as height channels, reflecting sound off your ceiling for additional dimension, to produce Dolby Atmos surround sound (up to 5.0.2ch). Dolby Atmos is an object-based format for surround sound that designates different sounds to specific places in the room rather than channels, creating a more realistic experience by dynamically incorporating height, surround, and front channels.

  • Getting Dolby Atmos sound is dependent on the source material, as well as the TV passing a Dolby Atmos signal through the HDMI eARC jack. If the Sonos Arc is recieving a Dolby Atmos signal, it will display an icon within the Sonos S2 App on both the "Now Playing" screen, as well as within the settings portion of the app.
  • The Sonos Arc is also compatible with Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS.
  • The Sonos Arc does not support DTS-HD or DTS:X.

TV Connectivity: The Sonos Arc can connect to your TV with HDMI eARC, HDMI ARC, or via the included HDMI-to-Optical adapter. For greatest performance, use the HDMI eARC connection. eARC stands for enhanced Audio Return Channel and allows full-resolution sound signals, including Dolby Atmos, to be passed from your TV to the soundbar.

  • eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel): If you connect to a TV with eARC, the multichannel audio formats supported include Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, and DTS
  • ARC (Audio Return Channel): If you connect to a TV using ARC, the multichannel audio formats supported are dependent on your TV model and manufacturer. The TV may be capable of sending Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, and DTS. An ARC connection cannot support Dolby TrueHD.
  • Optical Audio Adapter: If you connect to a TV using the HDMI-to-Optical adapter, the multichannel audio formats are limited to Dolby Digital, DTS, or PCM only. The HDMI-to-Optical adapter connection cannot support Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, or Dolby Digital Plus.

Notes:

  • The Sonos Arc does not support DTS-HD or DTS:X multichannel audio formats.
  • The Sonos Arc does not offer any analog audio inputs for connection to your television.

System Configurations: The Sonos Arc can be used as a stand-alone soundbar speaker or it can paired with an optional Sonos wireless powered sub and/or optional Sonos wireless rear surround speakers (sold separately).

  • Soundbar Only: As a stand-alone active soundbar speaker, the Sonos Arc can deliver 5.0.2ch Dolby Atmos surround sound thanks to its dedicated front, center, surround, and height channels.
  • Soundbar + Optional Wireless Sub: Add a Sonos Sub for 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos surround with a dedicated LFE subwoofer channel for bigger, deep, and more impactful bass response. And because its a wireless connection between the soundbar and sub, there is no subwoofer cable to run.
  • Soundbar + Optional Wireless Surrounds: Add a pair of Sonos speakers (like the Sonos ERA 100 or 300) for 5.0.2ch Dolby Atmos surround with dedicated rear surround channels for more enveloping surround sound without running speaker wire. You can even use the Sonos Amp as a rear amplifier with separate rear loudspeakers; in this configuration you will still need to run wire between the rear speakers and the Sonos Amp.
  • Soundbar + Optional Wireless Sub & Surrounds: Add a Sonos Sub and a pair of Sonos speakers (like the Sonos ERA 100 or 300) for a 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos surround with a dedicated LFE subwooer channel for bigger bass response and dedicated rear surround channels for more immersive surround sound - all without having to run a subwoofer cable or speaker wire. You can also use the Sonos Amp as a rear amplifier with separate rear loudspeakers; in this configuration you will still need to run wire between the rear speakers and the Sonos Amp.

Note:

  • Because the Sonos Arc only supports the new Sonos S2 operating system (OS) and app, the Sonos Sub and Sonos speakers will all need to be utilizing the new Sonos S2 operating system and app when in a wireless multichannel audio configuration.
  • The Sonos Arc does not support the older S1 "legacy" operating system and app from Sonos.
  • The Sonos Amp's subwoofer ouput and analog line inputs are disabled when used as a surround amplifier for the Sonos Arc.

Trueplay Tuning (for Apple iOS only: Trueplay tuning technology optimizes the sound for the unique acoustics of the room where Arc is placed, calibrating the front, center, surround, and height channels for precise localization. The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos App, uses the microphone in your Apple iOS 11.0+ device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the Sonos Arc soundbar speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. The Sonos Arc soundbar speaker already sounds fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.

  • You will need to retune the Sonos Arc using TruePlay, if you reposition the soundbar speaker or change the configuration of the speaker setup (such as adding a wireless powered sub or pair of wireless surround speakers).
  • Trueplay is currently not compatible with Android devices.

Audio Adjustments: The Sonos S2 Controller app lets you make audio adjustments from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device.

  • Equalizer: Adjustable EQ settings can be found in the Sonos S2 app. From the app you can adjust Bass, Treble, and Loudness.
  • Speech Enhancement: The Sonos Arc was carefully tuned with the help of Oscar-winning sound engineers to emphasize the human voice so you never miss a word. Turn on Speech Enhancement in the app to clarify dialogue when characters talk quietly or action intensifies.
  • Night Sound: Night Sound reduces the intensity of loud sound effects. Night Sound allows you to enjoy late night TV without waking the whole house by balancing the sound output of loud and soft passages.

Note: These audio adjustments can only be made from the Sonos S2 Controller app and not from the top-panel controls on the soundbar.

Mounting Options: The Sonos Arc soundbar speaker can be positioned below or above the center of your flat-panel TV on a tabletop, shelf, stand, or piece of AV furniture. The Sonos Arc can also be wall-mounted using the Sonos Arc Wall Mount Bracket (sold separately). The Sounos Arc soundbar speaker will automatically detect when it is attached to the mount and adjust its EQ to temper bass resonance against the wall.

  • For the best sound, mount the Sonos Arc soundbar 2" to 4" away from the top or bottom of your TV.
  • Keep both ends of the Sonos Arc soundbar at least 5.5" to 12" from a wall or other obstruction.
  • Make sure there is no objstruction above the Arc soundbar's upward firing drivers.

Detachabled AC Power Cord: The Sonos Arc comes with a detachable 6.5' AC power cord that will plug into the back of the soundbar speaker and into an AC wall outlet or surge protector (sold separately).

Network & Multiroom Audio

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio Eco-System: The Arc is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom audio eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos product and add more Sonos products over time. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Compatible distributed audio sources include internet radio, online music services, local network music libraries, as well as hardwired inputs. Up to 32 Sonos devices and 16 groups can be connected in one system. The Sonos Arc is compatible with the new Sonos S2 operating system (OS) and does not support the older Sonos S1 operating system (OS).

  • Sonos S2 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Five, One SL, Roam, ARC, Beam (Gen 2), Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020 will only be compatible with Sonos S2.
  • Sonos S2 and S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, and Sub (Gen 1/2) support both Sonos S2 and S1 operating systems.
  • Sonos S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), and Play: 5 (Gen 1) will only support the older S1 operating system.

Notes:

  • If you have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products in your system, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: In order to enjoy internet radio, online music services, your local network music libraries and Apple AirPlay 2, you'll need to connect the Sonos Arc to your home's wireless network router and ISP (internet service provider). Sonos brings your great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through WiFi or its SonosNet mesh network.

  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g/n; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system's wireless range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network. Sonos products manufactured after March 2014 are loaded with the proper firmware and ready to go out of the box for WiFi connectivity. All Sonos products manufactured prior to that date will require a wired connection to facilitate a firmware upgrade and thereafter they will be able to work over WiFi.
  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the Sonos Port, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
Notes:
  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance.
  • WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network.
  • WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz (you will have to use the Sonos wireless mesh network in this case).

Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to its built-in SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network and WiFi, the Sonos Arc is also equipped with one Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps). Use it to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you're using a SonosNET Boost setup.

Sonos S2 App: Sonos S2 is a new app (for Apple iOS 14.0+ / Android OS 8.0+ / Fire OS 7.0+ / Mac OSX 10.11+ / Windows 8+) that powers the next generation of Sonos products. The Sonos S2 app offers new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward. The updated app makes it even simpler for you to search for content, control the sound, and personalize your listening experience. Use the Sonos S2 app to setup your Sonos speaker system, control your Sonos speaker system, stream your favorite internet radio stations and online music services, access local network music libraries, and personalize your speaker system.

  • Setup: A compatible Apple iOS or Android device running the Sonos Controller app is required to set up a new Sonos system or add new products. Sonos also supports macOS and Windows versions of the Sonos Controller App, but certain system management features such as setting up a new Sonos system or adding new products, are not available.
  • Control: With the Sonos S2 app, you can control all your Sonos speakers, soundbars, and components. Adjust volume levels, group products to play in sync, or play something different in every room.
  • Music & Radio: The Sonos S2 app brings together hundreds of internet radio stations and online music services. You also get access to local network music libraries on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. Use the app to browse all your music, podcasts, radio, and audiobooks all in one place.
  • Personalized Settings: Save favorites and room groups to My Sonos to get to the music faster, create alarms so you can wake up to a favorite radio station or playlist, filter out explicit content, and more.
  • Security: Enhanced protocols, including support for elliptic curve cipher suites in SSL/TLS, keep your system safer and your data more secure.

Notes:

  • The Sonos Arc is not compatible with the older Sonos S1 Controller app and requires the new Sonos S2 Controller app.
  • Some older Sonos products ("legacy" products) will not support the advances of the S2 app due to their memory and processing power. If you own any of these products, you can continue to use your system as you do today. See System Requirements for more details.

Built-in Microphone Array: Five far-field microphones with advanced beamforming and multichannel echo-cancellation are built in to Sonos Arc to detect your voice from any direction, anywhere in the room. The Sonos ARC supports Sonos, Alexa, and Google voice control. When the microphone LED is on, Alexa or Google Assistant is ready for a voice command (these microphone can be turned off). You can speak at natural volume to activate Sonos, Alexa or Google supported voice commands. Based on your preference, you can choose to have voice feedback turned on or off.

Sonos Voice Control: Sonos Voice Control was created purely for listening on Sonos and delivers fast, accurate hands-free control of your music and your Sonos system with privacy. With Sonos Voice Control, you can use voice requests to control the Sonos ARC and other Sonos products in your system. You can even ask Sonos Voice for multiple things on multiple Sonos products at once. Sonos Voice Control finds the music you want to listen to by processing requests entirely on the device for faster response times and effortless follow-ups. All you need is one "Hey Sonos" and you can follow up without the need for additional wake-words. Just like the Sonos app, you can control music and speakers in any room, easily play music around the home, save and like your favorite songs to your personal music library, and more.

  • Music Control: Use Sonos Voice Control to play songs, artists, albums, playlists, genres, and more from select music services (including Sonos Radio, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, and Pandora). More services may be available in the future (not ETA). Click here for a complete list of the latest compatible music services. You can also use Sonos Voice to adjust the volume level, pause your music, skip tracks, and more. You can even ask Sonos Voice to "Like" or "Unlike" a song, as well as get information on what song is playing. In addition, you'll be able to group/ungroup rooms, plus move your music from one room to another.
  • Home Theater Control: Sonos Voice can also be used to turn the Sonos ARC soundbar and your HDMI-ARC connected TV on or off, as well as switch between Night and Speech enhancement modes.
  • Total Privacy: Designed with privacy at its core, Sonos Voice Control processes requests entirely on the device. No audio or transcript is sent to the cloud, stored, listened to, or read by other parties.

Works With Alexa & Google Assistant: The Sonos Arc blends great sound and multiroom audio with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice-activated, hands-free control of your music and more. You'll be able to control music and multiroom playback with just your voice. You can also use the Sonos Arc like any other Alexa Echo or Google Home device and ask non-music related commands (like information about the weather, traffic, news, sports, etc) or have Alexa control your smart home devices. You can pause, resume, and skip songs, as well as change the volume with all Sonos compatible online music services.
    • TV: For compatible TVs, Sonos Arc introduces commands specific to TV use, including "Turn on the TV" and "Turn off the TV". Sonos Arc also follows commands such as "Turn it up" and "Mute", applying them to the TV volume. Sonos Arc must be connected to your TV's HDMI-ARC input and your TV needs to support CEC features. Amazon Alexa voice control for your TV will not work if the Sonos Arc is connected via the included optical adapter.
    • Fire TV: The Sonos Arc can also be linked to Alexa-enabled video streaming devices such as Fire TV (sold separately). Once linked, you can control these services with the Sonos Arc by switching to specific network or tuning to a certain channel - all with just your voice. Notes:
  • You can only configure your Sonos system to work with one digital voice assisant; choose either Alexa or Google Assistant (you cannot use both). You will need to search and enable the Sonos skill from the Alexa or Google Home app on your mobile device or computer. Your Sonos equipment and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices must be on the same wireless network.
  • Sonos and Alexa or Google Assistant work together using a single Amazon or Google account. If you have a second Sonos system in another location, you'll need to use a second Amazon or Google account if you'd like to use Alexa. An Amazon or Google account can only be in use on one Sonos system at a time.

HDMI CEC: The Sonos Arc soundbar speaker does not come with a remote, but does offer HDMI CEC compatibility so you can control basic functions of the soundbar from your HDMI connected TV's remote. Basic functions include Power On/Off, Volume Up/Down, and Mute. HDMI CEC will not work if the Sonos Arc is connected via the included optical adapter.

IR Commands: Even though the Sonos Arc does not come with a remote control, it does feature a front-panel IR receiver that can receive commands from a TV remote control. Your TV's remote control will need to be programmed to operate the Sonos Arc. Control functions only include Volume Up and Down. Click this link for instructions on how to program your TV's remote to operate the Sonos Arc.

Top-Panel Controls: The Sonos Arc has touch-sensitive top-panel controls for basic functions such as Play/Pause, Volume Up/Down, and Previou/Next Track. There is also a button to turn the soundbar's built-in microphone on or off.

Simply register the One and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available through the Sonos S2 Controller app. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself. The Sonos Arc must be connected to your home network and the internet for automatic software updates.

System Requirements

Internet Service Provider: You'll need a high-speed, wired internet service provider connection such as cable, fiber, or DSL. Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or 4G LTE routers can experience delays between the internet connection and Sonos and are not supported. Using these types of connections can cause music to not play, skip, or cut out completely.

Network Requirements: Sonos can be configured in either a wireless or wired network setup. This article will cover the differences between the two setups and provide recommendations for which setup best suits your system and home network.

  • Wired Setup: A Sonos system operating in a wired setup will require one of your Sonos products to remain connected to the router via Ethernet cable at all times. If your Sonos system is in a wired setup and you use a WiFi mesh router with multiple wireless nodes, we recommend wiring your Sonos product directly to the primary wired mesh node. Avoid wiring any Sonos products to the wireless mesh nodes. If you are on a corporate or advanced network, it must not block Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).
  • WiFi Setup: All Sonos products can connect to wireless routers or access points that support 802.11b/g WiFi over 2.4GHz. Additionally, all Sonos products can connect to WiFi networks that use WPA1 and WPA2 Personal security standards, as well as unsecured WiFi networks. When running S2 software, many newer Sonos products support faster WiFi modes (including 802.11ac) and will connect to them when possible. You can learn more about which Sonos products support which WiFi modes, standards, and protocols in this article.

Notes: Unsupported network setups and devices include -

  • Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or LTE routers
  • Guest networks or networks that use a portal login page
  • Networks using wireless range extenders2
  • Ethernet over Power (EOP) devices
  • WPA/WPA2 Enterprise

Sonos S2 Controller App: Sonos offers a Sonos Controller app for for Apple iOS 14.0+, Android OS 8.0+, Fire 7.0+Mac OSX 10.11+, and Windows 8+. The Sonos S2 is a new app and operating system (OS) that powers the next generation of products and experiences. In addition to new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward, Sonos S2 enables higher resolution audio technologies for music and home theater.

  • Sonos Controller App Requirements: A compatible Apple iOS or Android device running the Sonos Controller app is required to set up a new Sonos system or add new products. Sonos also supports macOS and Windows versions of the Sonos Controller App, but certain system management features such as setting up a new Sonos system or adding new products, are not available. See this article for more details.
  • Sonos Product Compatibility: Most Sonos products are compatible with S2. Some older Sonos "legacy" products will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power. The older Sonos "legacy" app is referred to as the Sonos S1 app. This article will break down which Sonos products are compatible with Sonos S2 vs S1.
  • Split Sonos System: If you have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app. Read this article for more details.

Supported Audio Formats: Sonos supports a variety of audio formats for its 2ch stereo products and multichannel home theater speakers.

  • Music Libraries: Sonos supports the playback of your own music library stored on a NAS drive or personal computer. Sonos supports compressed & uncompressed audio formats when streaming from your local music library. Sonos systems support mono (1-channel) or stereo (2-channel) audio files with sample rates up to 48kHz. Sonos music libraries are limited to 65,000 tracks. The memory limit can be reached prior to 65,000 tracks if there is a large amount of metadata. For example, classical music tracks tend to have a large amount of metadata and can use up the available memory before the 65,000 track limit is reached. If you have more than 65,000 tracks, you can use Plex with Sonos as an alternative.
  • Home Theater: Sonos home theater speakers are compatible with a wide range of television and movie soundtrack audio formats. Compatible audio formats will vary by Sonos home theater speakers and by connection method to your TV. While most TVs are compatible with Sonos home theater speakers, some may need additional configuration or may not work with Sonos. This article will describe some basic requirements when using Sonos speakers with your TV.

Q
My wife is 'somewhat' hard at hearing and we watch a LOT of Movies. I want to get a soundbar that allows me to make the voices more prominent i n the surround mix when i need to. Ive seen some reviews that say the Sonos Arc is GOOD at producing clear voices BUT ive seen Other reviews saying that the Sonos Arc is NOT so good at that and that sometimes the voices can get somewhat lost/murky in the surround mix. What are your thoughts on that specifically? When watching a movie or tv show, does the Sonos Arc provide the ability for the user to adjust/enhance the voice clarity in the mix as needed in a successful/sufficient manner? If so, does the Sonos Arc allow that 'voice level adjustment' to 'stick' as a default 'personal preset' so that i wouldnt have to adjust it again every single time?) Thanks in advance....really looking hard at the 'Sonos Arc' or 'JBL 1000' and a few others too, but wanna be sure about a few things before i make my final decision.

Hey Derek, that is a great question. Sonos has incorporated a solid dialogue enhancer in their Arc. As a fellow Sonos owner, when I first got the bar, I found the dialogue to be pretty good but once the mixing of the sub and surrounds kicked in when I was watching Avengers: Endgame, I found the dialogue to be taking a back seat, so I turned on the dialogue enhancement and I never looked back. Sonos does not have adjustments that allow you to scale the changes unfortunately but if you take your time to adjust the EQs, you can really bring a strong dialogue out while keeping a great surround sound experience. While the Sonos setting is just an on/off for dialogue, I can confirm that the choice and EQ adjustments will stay in place unless an update rolls out that wipes those settings (happened once in the 2 years I've owned it).

My TV is inside an armoire/cabinet which has an arched top. I understand it is not advised to place the sound bar inside the cabinet. Can it be mounted on the wall above the armoire/cabinet? Or will the sound be distorted that high up on the wall (7-8 ft)?
malynda  Jan 06, 2024

A
Greetings MaLynda. Thank you for your question. This Sonos Arc has speakers pointed up, and pointed out each side. You would lose performance inside a cabinet. Up 7-8 feet will not distort, but you will be losing sound direction towards your ears. For best sonic performance you want speakers near ear level. You could, get a little creative with a wall mount and have it tilt downward a bit.

malynda  Jan 06, 2024

A
The sound would not distort for this reason. The issue would be the effect that placing the Arc so high would have on its performance with Dolby Atmos content. The Arc features upfiring speakers that reflect sound off of the ceiling and back down onto your seating location. With the soundbar so high, this could throw off the angle of this reflection and negatively impact Dolby Atmos performance.

Q
does this soundbar need be placed on top off a table or tv stand, or can this be placed in an entertainment center without losing the dispersion?
paul  Jul 13, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Paul, and thank you for your question. There are speakers pointed upward on this bar. If they are blocked in any way, you will lose some effect. There is also sound coming out of each side you would not want to block. Place it on top of entertainment furniture, or if your TV is mounted to a wall, a third party makes an attachment to have this bar mounted to the back of the TV using the same wall mount screws.

The Sonos app will not run on my iPhone. What are my options for setting these speakers up? Will they work without the app?
david  Feb 20, 2023
1 answer
A
You will need to download and use the app for setup, David. The Sonos S2 app does need an iPhone or device using Apple iOS 14.0+ to work properly. Sadly, there is no way to manually set the bar up to the network without the app.

Will I experience atmos if the tv does have an eARC HDMI connection?

Q
Can i connect my Sony UHP-H1 player thru a Orei e-arc converter to this Sonos Arc and play my SACD's and hear true multi channel music with a sub mini and one SL rear speakers?
robert  Nov 20, 2022
1 answer
A
That would not work because the ARC will only take in stereo PCM through the HDMI-to-optical audio adapter. It does not take in multichannel PCM with the adapter and only gets it when connected to an HDMI eARC port on a TV.

Can you play output through an HDMI connection from an amplifier supporting cd players , analog sources, Dvd blueray players etc?
foster  Jul 13, 2022
1 answer
A
The HDMI connection on this soundbar is intended for us with a TV that offers HDMI ARC/eARC. It will not allow for direct connections from an amplifier or receiver with HDMI output. If the amplifier you're using allows audio information to be passed into your TV, then it may be possible to use the ARC/eARC HDMI connection of the TV to pass that audio to this soundbar. For more help with your specific equipment, please give our advisors a call at 1-800-324-9695.

Can you turn off Alexa and Google Assist?
stuart  Nov 18, 2021

Yes, during setup using the S2 app on your smartphone I'm pretty sure you can disable Alexa or Google Assist. I didn't turn these features on in the first place on my Arc. If that doesn't work you can always restore the Arc to factory settings and then start the setup process again.

I have an onkyo receiver (Tx-sr333) and trying to determine whether I can use it with Sonos arc and still use my current subwoofer. Any suggestions on whether that would work or am I stuck buying the Sonos sub as well?
robert  Aug 28, 2021

I don't think that would work, because the output on your receiver would be forwarded to the Arc..... Honestly, you may find that you don't need the sub. The Arc is one of the best soundbars I've had. Great sound, and solid low end.
joel m  Aug 29, 2021

The arc is the new receiver and the speakers to the system are all wireless. If you want the rich, deep, bass you're going to have to purchase the the sub for the Sonos system. I purchased the whole surround setup and you won't be disappointed.

Q
If you connect the Arc through HDMI/arc port will the sound bar turn on automatically when you turn on the TV? Also, can you control the volume using the TV remote or do you turn the volume all the way down on the TV and use the Sonos app to control the volume?
christopher  Apr 29, 2021

A
Christopher, If setup in the HDMI/Arc port the Sonia Arc will turn on simultaneously with your equipment. Any remote capable of controlling more than one piece on equip will control your volume. No app needed.
james j  Apr 29, 2021
A
Yes. AFAIK, the Arc is always on once you plug it in because it keeps itself connected to WiFi. The only on/off is the microphone which controls whether or not your voice asst., if you choose to use one, is listening. I can control the volume on my Arc with my remotes for LG TV, Apple TV and Fios cable box. I never use the app for volume.
charles  Apr 29, 2021
A
Yes, the Sonos turns on automatically when the tv is turned on. You can set up the Sonos volume control on a tv or cable box remote. Lastly, when you have the arc setup with arc output of tv you're tv's internal speakers are disabled. So, you don't have to adjust the TVs speakers at all.
paul  Apr 29, 2021
A
Yes, the arc turns on automatically. You must set your TV to use the HDMI/Arc output and it should turn off the TV speakers (or you can do that manually if it doesn't). Your TV remote should control the arc volume with its remote. You can always use the app if needed.

I am attempting to mount the ARC on a TV that is mounted onto a Tile wall and dont want more permanent holes, is there a reasonable solution to mount directly to the TV mount (I have seen a mount) and does that solution work well?

I'm planning to mount it under TV on a wall inside the bookshelf unit that is 47 inch wide. So the rear speakers will be blocked by the wood. Will it diminish the sonic quality from the Sonos Arc?
misha  Sep 15, 2020

A
You don't want speaker blocked because it has side firing, and up firing speakers and that's what gives the different sound effects.

Hi Misha, Yes, I believe the sound will change as it is distorted by the wooden shelves.
curt  Sep 15, 2020

When we initially received the Arc is was placed on the table In front of the TV. We have since mounted the tv on the wall, placed the Arc below the TV so it is against the wall. We felt the sound was better after we did this. I hope this helps.

while watchinng youtube on tv with sonos arc, the sound is skipping.what is happening?
tony  Aug 15, 2020

Tony, Try a couple things to rectify this problem. Do a router reboot in your home 1st. A couple other options include making sure there's no close wireless interference with you Arc from other wireless access sources. Also, make sure you are the only one streaming from your YouTube account at the time you're having issues. I'd try the router reboot first.

Can this be located in a BDI Corridor 8177 without a tremendous degradation to sound? The upfiring speakers have me concerned.
robert  Nov 20, 2021
1 answer
A
Will the ARC be in the Corridor or places on top? If on top you're fine. If inside, what are the door panels made of? Are the breathable? Reminder that the upward firing speakers only engage on movies produced in Dolby Atmos and I find that to be a very low percentage of my viewing/listening needs.

Well, it depends on how you like listening to music or watching movies. It sounds really good alone but if you want to feel that extra kick and can afford the extra buy definitely get the subwoofer, the difference is amazing.
