High-performance streaming sound

Sonos Five

Does your home have an open floor plan? The Sonos Five can deliver finely detailed, robust stereo sound for your space. And if one isn't enough, maybe two will do. Placed horizontally, a single Sonos Five projects a stereo image by itself. Two placed vertically and paired wirelessly deliver even bigger sound and better stereo separation — a great way to get deeper into all the music that Sonos's renowned wireless streaming system puts at your fingertips.

And your Five (or pair of Fives) can also be part of a Sonos wireless multi-room audio system for even more entertainment options.

Designed for rich musical detail

The Five features three high-excursion woofers, mounted in sealed chambers. This ensures full sound with deep, clean bass. Three tweeters deliver clear highs. Two are angled outward to disperse the sound to the sides, with the third placed in the centre of the cabinet for focused vocals. The speaker system was tuned by renowned producer Giles Martin for exceptional sound.

Simple multi-room audio

Your Five can be part of a larger Sonos multi-room audio system. Place players like the Sonos One or Sonos Move every room where you want to listen to music. Sonos sound bars give you better TV sound plus easy access to your favourite streaming music services and downloaded songs.

You can set up your Sonos players to work on your existing Wi-Fi® network. Or you can connect any Sonos speaker to your network router, and Sonos will create its own dedicated wireless network for even better performance. You can also use a Boost to create this network if you can't place a speaker near your router.

Compatible with Apple AirPlay 2

The Five has AirPlay 2 built in. So you can stream audio directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or Mac® computer through your Sonos system. That includes soundtracks from YouTube® videos and Netflix movies.

Trueplay speaker tuning for optimal sound

If you use your Sonos control app on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch®, you can use it to fine-tune the Sonos Five with the app's built-in Trueplay feature. Trueplay uses the mic in your Apple device to measure how the sound reflects off your walls and furnishings. It then adjusts the speaker's settings for the best possible sound.

Room-Filling Stereo Sound: The Sonos Five lets you experience vividly clear, room-filling sound from your favorite music streaming service and auxiliary source. It utilizes a multi-driver array configuration that consists of three tweeters and three woofers powered by 6 Class-D amplifiers to create a wide stereo soundstage that directs sound to the left, right, and center.

  • Three Tweeters: Three tweeters, including one center tweeter and two precisely angled side tweeters, create a crisp high-frequency response. The two precisely angled side tweeters create spatial extension and rich stereo sound, while the center tweeter optimizes vocal playback.
  • Three Woofers: The Five's three custom-designed, high-excursion woofers within an acoustic suspension (sealed) enclosure produces deep, accurate bass and eliminates reverb and echo. The three midwoofers ensure faithful playback of vocal frequencies in addition to rich bass without distortion, even at high volumes.
  • 6 Class-D Amps: The Sonos Five utilizes six Class-D digital amplifiers perfectly tuned to the speaker's acoustic architecture for dynamic room-filling stereo sound with not distortion and any volume level.

Sonos Wireless Multiroom Audio Eco-System: The Five is part of the Sonos wireless multiroom audio eco-system consisting of a family of wireless network speakers, players, and amplifiers. Start with a single Sonos product and add more Sonos products over time. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms of your home. Compatible distributed audio sources include internet radio, online music services, local network music libraries, as well as hardwired inputs. Up to 32 Sonos devices and 16 groups can be connected in one system. The Sonos Five is compatible with the new Sonos S2 operating system (OS) and does not support the older Sonos S1 operating system (OS).

  • Sonos S2 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Five, One SL, Roam, ARC, Beam (Gen 2), Sub (Gen 3), and any Sonos products released after May 2020 will only be compatible with Sonos S2.
  • Sonos S2 and S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 (Gen 2), Playbase, Playbar, Connect (Gen 2), Connect:Amp (Gen 2), One (Gen 1/2), Beam, Amp, Port, Boost, Move, and Sub (Gen 1/2) support both Sonos S2 and S1 operating systems.
  • Sonos S1 OS Compatible Products: The Sonos CR200 Controller, Zone Player, Bridge, Connect (Gen 1), Connect: Amp (Gen 1), and Play: 5 (Gen 1) will only support the older S1 operating system.

Notes:

  • If you have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products in your system, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app.
  • Click here for more information regarding Sonos "Legacy" S1 versus the new Sonos S2 Operating System and App.

Trueplay Tuning: Trueplay software (for Apple iOS only) dynamically tunes the speaker to the unique acoustics of the room. Trueplay puts the speaker-tuning capability of the pros in the palm of your hands, customizing the sound of the speaker to the unique acoustics of the room. The layout of a room, and where a speaker is placed, can have a significant impact on the sound that you hear. Trueplay, an auto-tune app within the Sonos S2 App, uses the microphone in your Apple iOS device to measure how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, and then fine tunes the Sonos Five speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it. The Sonos Five speaker already sounds fantastic, but Trueplay brings you even closer to how music should sound. Completing Trueplay tuning for a room takes approximately 3 minutes from start to finish.

  • Apple iOS Compatible: In order to perform Trueplay tuning, the Sonos S2 app for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 11.0 or higher is required. This includes iPhone 4s and higher, iPad 2 and higher, as well as iPod touch 5th generation and higher. Trueplay tuning is not available if the "VoiceOver" feature is enabled on your Apple iOS device. Trueplay is currently not compatible with Android.
  • 1Ch/1.1ch & 2Ch/2.1Ch Tuning: Trueplay can be used with a single speaker setup, two speakers configured as a stereo pair, or either of these configurations with the Sonos Sub added.
Note: You will need to retune the Sonos Five speaker using TruePlay, if you move the speaker within the same room or to another room, change the orientation of speaker (horizontal vs. vertical), or change the configuration of the speaker setup (going from a single speaker to a stereo pair for example).

Equalizer: You can adjust the following equalization (EQ) settings from the Sonos S2 app - Bass, Treble, Balance, and Loudness. These EQ settings must be configured in the Sonos S2 app and are not available from the speaker's top-panel controls.

Wireless Stereo Pairing: You can wirelessly pair two Sonos Five speakers to create an even wider soundstage with even more detailed stereo separation. Each speaker will smartly adjust to mono and act as the Left or Right speaker in a wireless stereo setup.

Note: You can only stereo pair a Sonos Five with another Sonos Five. You cannot stereo pair a Sonos Five with a Sonos Play 5, Sonos Play 5 (Gen 2), or other Sonos speaker.

Wireless Surrounds: Two Sonos Five speakers can be wirelessly paired together to create wireless rear surrounds for your compatible Sonos soundbar speaker - including the ARC, Playbar, Playbase, Beam and Beam (Gen 2) - all sold separately. The compatible Sonos soundbar speaker must be utilizing the same Sonos S2 operating system and S2 controller app as the Sonos Five, because the Five does not support the older Sonos S1 ("legacy") OS and app.

Note: You'll need two Sonos Five speakers to create a wireless surround pair. You cannot mix and match a Sonos Five speaker with a Sonos Play 5, Sonos Play 5 (Gen 2), or other Sonos speaker to create wireless rear surrounds.

Optional Wireless Subwoofer: The optional Sonos Sub wireless powered subwoofer (sold separately) can be wirelessly paired with the Sonos Five to enhance your system's bass response. Add the Sonos Sub to a single Sonos Five, a pair of stereo Sonos Fives, or a set of Sonos Five wireless surrounds. The set-up procedure for the Sub adjusts the crossover automatically so it seamlessly integrates with the Sonos Five and the rest of your Sonos speakers. Through the Sonos S2 Controller app, you can also set the phase and level of the subwoofer to match it the rest of your Sonos speaker system.

Note: The Sonos Sub must be utilizing the same Sonos S2 operating system and S2 controller app as the Sonos Five, because the Five does not support the older Sonos S1 ("legacy") OS and app.

Mounting Options: The Sonos Five can be positioned horizontally or vertically on a tabletop, desktop, countertop, or other flat mounting surface. When positioned horizontally, the Five automatically separates the left and right channels for impressive stereo sound. The Sonos Five can also be wall-mounted using an optional Flexson Wall Bracket (sold separately).

  • Horizontal Dimensions: 14.3125" (w) x 7.9375" (h) x 6.875" (d)
  • Vertical Dimensions: 7.9375" (w) x 14.3125" (h) x 6.875" (d)

Humidity Resistant: The Sonos Five is humidity resistant and can be permanently installed safely in a bathroom. The Five can also be used outdoors temporarily on a porch or deck, as long as you have access to an AC power outlet and WiFi/Internet connection. However, the Sonos Five is not water or water resistant and should not be exposed to rain, water spray, or extreme temperatures. The Sonos Five should never be left outdoors when not in use.

Detachable AC Power Cord: The Sonos Five comes with a 6.5' AC power cord that plugs into the back of the speaker and into an AC wall outlet or surge protector (sold separately).

Note: The Sonos Five speaker is not battery powered.

Variety Of Music Sources

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: In order to enjoy internet radio, online music services, your local network music libraries and Apple AirPlay 2, you'll need to connect the Sonos Five speaker to your home's wireless network router and ISP (internet service provider). Sonos brings your great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through WiFi or its SonosNet mesh network.

  • WiFi Wireless Network: Sonos can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11n; 2.4/5GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Sonos system's wireless range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network. Sonos products manufactured after March 2014 are loaded with the proper firmware and ready to go out of the box for WiFi connectivity. All Sonos products manufactured prior to that date will require a wired connection to facilitate a firmware upgrade and hereafter they will be able to work over WiFi.
  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: Sonos can utilize its own SonosNet proprietary wireless mesh network technology to provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensure synchronous music playback, and avoid sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Sonos wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the Sonos Five, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
Notes:
  • You cannot connect the Sonos system via both the SonosNet proprietary mesh network and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable.
  • The Sonos proprietary mesh network will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance.
  • WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz or 5GHz devices on your network.

Ethernet Port (10/100 Mbps): In addition to its built-in SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network and WiFi, the Sonos Five is also equipped with one Ethernet port (10/100 Mbps). Use it to wire directly to your router to operate Sonos if WiFi is unstable, or use the Ethernet port to provide Internet accessibility to non-wireless devices if you're using a SonosNET Boost setup.

Automatic Software Updates: The Sonos Five supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the Five and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available through the Sonos S2 Controller app.

System Requirements

Internet Service Provider: You'll need a high-speed, wired internet service provider connection such as cable, fiber, or DSL. Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or 4G LTE routers can experience delays between the internet connection and Sonos and are not supported. Using these types of connections can cause music to not play, skip, or cut out completely.

Network Requirements: Sonos can be configured in either a wireless or wired network setup. This article will cover the differences between the two setups and provide recommendations for which setup best suits your system and home network.

  • Wired Setup: A Sonos system operating in a wired setup will require one of your Sonos products to remain connected to the router via Ethernet cable at all times. If your Sonos system is in a wired setup and you use a WiFi mesh router with multiple wireless nodes, we recommend wiring your Sonos product directly to the primary wired mesh node. Avoid wiring any Sonos products to the wireless mesh nodes. If you are on a corporate or advanced network, it must not block Spanning Tree Protocol (STP).
  • WiFi Setup: All Sonos products can connect to wireless routers or access points that support 802.11b/g WiFi over 2.4GHz. Additionally, all Sonos products can connect to WiFi networks that use WPA1 and WPA2 Personal security standards, as well as unsecured WiFi networks. When running S2 software, many newer Sonos products support faster WiFi modes (including 802.11ac) and will connect to them when possible. You can learn more about which Sonos products support which WiFi modes, standards, and protocols in this article.

Notes: Unsupported network setups and devices include -

  • Wireless internet connections such as satellite, mobile hotspots, or LTE routers
  • Guest networks or networks that use a portal login page
  • Networks using wireless range extenders2
  • Ethernet over Power (EOP) devices
  • WPA/WPA2 Enterprise

Sonos S2 Controller App: Sonos offers a Sonos Controller app for for Apple iOS 14.0+, Android OS 8.0+, Fire 7.0+Mac OSX 10.11+, and Windows 8+. The Sonos S2 is a new app and operating system (OS) that powers the next generation of products and experiences. In addition to new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward, Sonos S2 enables higher resolution audio technologies for music and home theater.

  • Sonos Controller App Requirements: A compatible Apple iOS or Android device running the Sonos Controller app is required to set up a new Sonos system or add new products. Sonos also supports macOS and Windows versions of the Sonos Controller App, but certain system management features such as setting up a new Sonos system or adding new products, are not available. See this article for more details.
  • Sonos Product Compatibility: Most Sonos products are compatible with S2. Some older Sonos "legacy" products will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power. The older Sonos "legacy" app is referred to as the Sonos S1 app. This article will break down which Sonos products are compatible with Sonos S2 vs S1.
  • Split Sonos System: If you have both, older "legacy" Sonos products and newer Sonos products, you have the option to create two separate eco-systems - one that will be controlled with the older Sonos S1 controller app and the other that will be controlled by the newer Sonos S2 controller app. Read this article for more details.

Supported Audio Formats: Sonos supports a variety of audio formats for its 2ch stereo products and multichannel home theater speakers.

  • Music Libraries: Sonos supports the playback of your own music library stored on a NAS drive or personal computer. Sonos supports compressed & uncompressed audio formats when streaming from your local music library. Sonos systems support mono (1-channel) or stereo (2-channel) audio files with sample rates up to 48kHz. Sonos music libraries are limited to 65,000 tracks. The memory limit can be reached prior to 65,000 tracks if there is a large amount of metadata. For example, classical music tracks tend to have a large amount of metadata and can use up the available memory before the 65,000 track limit is reached. If you have more than 65,000 tracks, you can use Plex with Sonos as an alternative.
  • Home Theater: Sonos home theater speakers are compatible with a wide range of television and movie soundtrack audio formats. Compatible audio formats will vary by Sonos home theater speakers and by connection method to your TV. While most TVs are compatible with Sonos home theater speakers, some may need additional configuration or may not work with Sonos. This article will describe some basic requirements when using Sonos speakers with your TV.

My question is what speaker produces the best sound.2 Sonos 1 speakers ,or one Sonos 5 ?

A
Without knowing more about this application or room this will be going in, the a single Sonos Five projects a stereo image by itself. However, using two of the Sonos Ones will give you better stereo separation.

Q
Can the Sonos Five be placed on a back covered patio?
brad  Jul 14, 2021
1 answer
A
The Sonos Five is not designed to be for outdoor use so it may not fare well if the humidity is high in the patio. But that is only my guess. Perhaps asking Sonos would give you a better answer.

Q
Sonos 5 max number? Can I add 2 Sonos 5 to my current set of 2 to create a home theater? I also own a 15" Veladyne sub I'd like to use in the setup. Thx!

A
Sonos tells us that the 5s (and Ones) are not really suitable for home theater since there is no way to adjust time delay for lip sync. But if you have another way of accomplishing the needed delay settings then you should be OK. Integrating the Velodyne will be a bit of a problem. You will need the Sonos Port to integrate the sub into the Sonos system. I am doing that to integrate a Hsu ULS 15 with a pair of Sonos 5s for music. Works well enough but it adds the cost of the Port to your system. Hope this helps...

Q
Would adding one 5 to a Beam and 2 Sonos 1 (Gen 2) already purchased the Beam & Sonos 1 (Gen 2) make any improvement to the room?
tim  Jun 29, 2020

A
I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish. If this is for converting a 2 channel system to 5 channel I am not sure if the audio delay (lip sync) will be the same for all devices. Maybe ask Sonos?
james  Jun 29, 2020
A
I would add a sub instead of the five.
