About the Marantz Model 50

David Brown

Pure analog, pure Marantz sound

Don't get me wrong — I love digital audio and all the convenience it brings. But there's something beautiful about the all-analog design of the Marantz Model 50. This integrated amp focuses on two jobs: delivering exquisite sound and legit power to your speakers. To that aim, Marantz has left the digital circuitry to other devices. This amp is built for music lovers who prioritize build quality, clean power, and pristine audio signals.

The Model 50 draws on over 70 years of Marantz history. It beautifully balances authoritative Class AB power with precise performance. Marantz's Hyper Dynamic Amp Module is one of the key components, helping achieve pinpoint control over a speaker's drivers while minimizing noise. And the lack of digital circuitry minimizes interference, for even cleaner playback.

Ample connections for your music sources

If you want to add streaming music to this amp, fear not. There are six analog inputs to accommodate a music streamer, CD player (the matching Marantz CD 50n is a great choice), and just about any component with RCA outputs. There's also a dedicated phono input to connect a turntable.

If you simply must have more power than this amp can deliver (maybe you've got very demanding speakers and a cavernous room), there are preamp outs for connecting to a separate power amp. There's also a preamp output for adding a subwoofer if you're using this to power bookshelf speakers and crave more bass. One very cool feature is a set of inputs that allow you to use the Model 50 as a power amp — it's a clever way to integrate this amp into a larger home theatre system.

Stereo Integrated Amplifier: The Marantz Model 50 employs a powerful and precise Class AB amplifier that incorporates a Current Feedback Design & Marantz HDAM Technology for high-current amplification and high-quality sound. The Model 50 is conservatively rated at 70 watts per channel into 8-ohm, and 100 watts per channel into 4-ohm (20-20kHz @ 0.02%) for compatibility with the widest range of loudspeakers. It's been expertly crafted and tuned for the most musical sound possible.

  • Current Feedback Amplification: Marantz proprietary current-feedback circuit, using discrete components, is adopted in the pre-amplifier and power amplifier. Current Feedback amplification is a well-known, Marantz-original circuit technology, suiting perfectly the requirements of high-resolution audio with wide-bandwidth and high-speed reproduction. The impedance at the Current Feedback point is limited resulting in a very low phase shift, meaning Marantz Current Feedback amplifiers reduce the need for phase compensation via Negative FeedBack (NFB) to a minimum. This simplified signal path results in high through-rate, excellent transient response, and superb sonic transparency across the full bandwidth. Unlike conventional Voltage Feedback topology, Current Feedback also makes the power amplifier insensitive to difficult loudspeaker loads.
  • Marantz HDAM Technology: Marantz developed its own discrete circuit boards called Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Modules, or HDAMs, to replace the chip-based amps used elsewhere. Using discrete surface mount components with short mirror-image left and right signal paths, HDAMs outperform the regular integrated Op-amps dramatically in Slew Rate and noise level. The result is much more dynamic, accurate and detailed sound. The Model 50 leverages this unique Marantz innovation and use a high-grade HDAM-SA3 version to ensure whatever you're listening to is always the most musical.

Toroidal Transformer: The Marantz Model 50 integrated amplifier utilizes a large double-shielded Toroidal transformer. A Toroidal transformer has several advantages over a normal EI core transformer. It is very efficient and therefore delivers more power compared to the same size of an EI core transformer. In addition, due to its shape, the electromagnetic radiation and the mechanical vibration are extremely low all ending in a better sound quality.

High-Quality Analog Design: The Marantz Model 50 has been meticulously crafted with high-grade audio construction, customized components, a symmetrical PCB layout, aluminum extrusion heat sink, and more for audiophile-grade sound. Plus, because the Model 50 is strictly analog, there are no digital audio circuitries which simplifies the integrated amp's layout and reduces audible interference.

Tone Controls: The Marantz Model 50 lets you adjust Bass and Treble to suit your sound, or bypass with Source Direct mode for the purest sound possible. You can manually adjust the integrated amplifier's Bass (50Hz) and Treble (15kHz) from -10dB to +10dB. To ensure the shortest signal path and upmost fidelity, the Model 40n features Marantz Source Direct function, which bypasses the tone and balance control circuitry for a straight path, delivering elevated sound purity.

Line-Level Inputs & Recorder Output: The Marantz Model 50 is equipped with five line-level analog audio RCA stereo inputs (labeled "CD", "Tuner", "Line-1", "Line-2", and "Recorder". In addition to the five line-level audio inputs there is also one analog stereo RCA output (labeled "Recorder").

Phono MM Input: The Model 50 is equipped with a Phono MM input with the Marantz Music Phono EQ built-in, so you can connect a turntable with a MM cartridge directly to the Model 50 integrated amplifier. The Marantz Music Phono EQ integrates a FET (field-effect transistors) in its Phono input stage. This provides high input impedance, eliminates the need for AC coupling capacitors, and simplifies the signal path, lowering distortion and noise vastly improving the signal purity overall.

Power Amp In (Home Theater Bypass): The Marantz Model 50 provides a Power Amp Input (also known as Home Theater Bypass) that consists of two fixed gain stereo RCA inputs. These stereo RCA inputs can be used for connecting an external preamp and using the Model 50 as a power amp. This is convenient when connecting an AV amp via its pre-outs so that the listening space with the same front speakers can be used as a home theater.

A/B Binding Posts: The Model 50 integrated amp features A & B speaker outputs for connecting up to two pair of loudspeakers or bi-wiring a single pair of loudspeakers. . The A & B speaker outputs consists of heavy-duty binding post terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

  • When utilizing only one set of speaker terminals to connect a single pair of loudspeakers, you can use 4 to 16 ohm speakers.
  • When utilizing both sets of speaker terminals to connect two pair of loudspeakers, you can use 8 to 16 ohm speakers.
  • When utilizing both sets of speaker terminals to bi-wire a single pair of loudspeaker, you can use 4 to 16 ohm speakers.

Stereo & Subwoofer Preouts: The Marantz Model 50 offers a stereo RCA preout and mono-RCA subwoofer preout. The stereo RCA preout can be used to connect a second power amplifier for bi-amping or for simply adding a more powerful amplifier. The stereo RCA preouts are active with the integrated amp's speaker outputs. The mono-RCA subwoofer preout can be used to connect a powered subwoofer for adding more bass to your system. The sub out is full-range, so you'll need a powered subwoofer with a built-in low pass crossover.

Headphone Out: The Marantz Model 50 features a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphones. When the headphones are plugged into this jack, audio will no longer be output from the connected speakers or from the pre-outs.

Front-Panel Display & Controls: The front-panel display indicates source selection, volume adjustment, and menu settings. The display brightness can be adjusted between four levels. Switching the display off reduces a source of noise that affects sound quality, enabling higher sound quality playback. Front-panel controls include six rotary knobs that operate Input Selection, Volume, Bass & Treble, Balance, and Source Direct. There is also a Power On/Off button on the front-panel.

IR Remote: The included IR remote provides wireless operation of the Marantz Model 50 integrated amplifier, as well as a Marantz CD player, SACD player, and/or Network audio player (all sold separately).

Remote In/Out: Remote control input  and output jacks let you directly connect the Model 50 integrated amplifier to other Marantz components for easy system control. The remote input and output consist of a mono-RCA jack.

Auto Standby: With the Auto Standby Mode turned on, the Model 50 integrated amplifier will enter standby mode after approximately 15 minutes (continuous) of no output from the speakers, preouts, or headphones.

Protection Circuit: This is a function to prevent damage to components within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage, or over-heating occurs. In this unit, the power indicator blinks and the unit enters standby mode when an abnormality occurs.
