Ready, aim, music!

The '5650-C-II's tweeter gives you 100-degree dispersion, and it swivels, so you can aim the sound precisely where you need it to go. You can even rotate the 6-1/2" woofer a full 360 degrees and tilt it up to 15 degrees in any direction. This flexibility gives you full, detailed sound no matter where you place the speaker. Plus, tweeter and mid-bass level switches let you adjust the sound to suit your personal taste and room's acoustics.

Horn technology for room-filling sound

Because high-frequency sounds are more directional than bass frequencies, it's especially important to target them right toward your ears. Klipsch places their titanium tweeter inside a flared opening, known as a "horn." This design brings out details in everything you listen to, while reducing reflections that can colour the sound.

Keeping a low profile

The CDT-5650-C II stays inconspicuous with its SlimTrim™ grille. The visible frame size is reduced by 90% and grille depth is reduced by 80% over previous designs, for a nearly flush finish that blends in beautifully. The paintable aluminum, magnetic grille attaches securely with ease to virtually eliminate resonant distortion.

An optional in-ceiling bracket is recommended for installing the CDT-5650-C-II in new construction.

Mounting Options

Controlled Dispersion Technology (CDT): The Klipsch CDT-5650-C II in-ceiling speaker features a patent-pending gimbal mechanism, known as Controlled Dispersion Technology (CDT). The tweeter and woofer are independently adjustable, allowing both the high and low frequencies to be directed toward the listening area.

High Efficiency: The high-efficiency design of the Klipsch in-ceiling speakers allows you to get much more output than most in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. Due to the long speaker wire runs that are common in whole-house audio systems, the power coming from the amplifier is significantly reduced by the time it reaches the speakers. The 94dB efficiency of this speaker means it will play much louder at low power than other less-efficient speakers.

2-Way Driver Design: The Klipsch CDT-5650-C II uses a high-quality 1" titanium dome compression driver (tweeter) mated to an exclusive Tractrix Horn, combined with a 6.5" Cerametallic woofer in a 2-way design.

  • Tweeter: The 1" Titanium dome compression tweeter is mated to a swiveling 100° Tractrix Horn. The swiveling horn design dramatically increases efficiency by enabling the speaker to produce more output using less energy. The horn-loaded tweeter allows you to point the sound to a specific location, and has more controlled directivity than a conventional dome tweeter. The addition of a Linear Travel Suspension to the tweeter increases high frequency detail and smoothness
  • Woofer: The 6.5" copper-colored, machine-spun Cerametallic woofer can rotate a full 360°, and then shift 15° in any direction. The solid Aluminum diaphragm, anodized to add stiffness and provide perfect damping, has a new hi-tech look that also delivers increased rigidity for even tighter, more defined bass. The new integrated dust cap further strengthens the cone and helps ventilate the voice coil for increased driver durability.

Speaker Terminals: The speaker has a pair of spring-loaded binding posts that can accept up to 12-gauge wire, as well as pin connectors and single banana plugs.

Tweeter/Mid-bass Attenuation Switches: If the speaker is installed in an acoustically bright room, such as a bathroom or a kitchen, you can attenuate the tweeter by -3dB, using the Tweeter Attenuation Switch. If the speaker is located in a corner and produces too much bass, you should adjust the Mid-bass level switch (-3dB). Both switches are located on the front of the speaker.

ABS Basket/Frame: The CDT-5650-C II has a sturdy ABS basket and frame. The frame can be painted to match any decor.

SlimTrim Magnetic Grille: With an all new grille, the visible frame size is reduced by 90% and grille depth is reduced by 80% over the previous design, for a more edge-to-edge consistent look that blends in with the wall more attractively. The new aluminum, paintable, magnetic grille attaches tightly and securely with ease to virtually eliminate resonant distortion.

Power Specifications Note: The manufacturer has specified the maximum power handling of this speaker as 50 watts RMS (200 W Peak). Klipsch has also published a recommended amplifier power specification as 100 watts.

Mounting Options

Installation: The speaker can be installed in new or existing construction. It requires a cutout diameter of 8.1875". For new construction, purchase of the IK-650-C installation kit (714IK650C, sold separately) is highly recommended. For existing construction, the speaker should be installed in drywall at least 3/8" thick. It can also be installed in a drop ceiling (2' x 2' or 2' x 4' ceiling tiles only). In both cases, to maximize the acoustic performance of the in-ceiling speakers, Klipsch recommends you replace the original mounting panel with 1/2" or 3/4" plywood or MDF. A cardboard template is included to assist you in making the cutout.

Greetings, and thank you for your question. The Klipsch CDT-5650-C II are not moisture resistant, or have any IP rating. I cannot advise installing outdoors.

Can I put these in-wall instead of in ceiling?

Yes, absolutely.
[ JON  Apr 05, 2022 ]
They are designed, to my knowledge for in ceiling mounting, but if properly placed they would be nice wall mounts

I am looking for the best outdoor soffit mounted speakers, what do you recommend?

You should talk to crutchfield about this. You need speakers that are weather proof even if they are in a soffet. I bought the 4 klipsch 6550's for my ceiling installed Atmos system, that i installed in the attic. I made wooden boxes to protect them from the cold and insulation.

Awesome setup. Premium sound

Good afternoon, I am waiting on a new home being built and it comes with 5.1 prewire for the livingroom. I was considering 4 of these speakers for my front and rear and a RP 250c for the center. Would this work? Sorry I am a total newbie to this and if so what would you suggest for a sub and receiver? Thanks in advance Steve

Hello, I installed these in-ceiling for Atmos to compliment the in-wall speakers I had already. You may want to look at their in-wall designed products, like R-5800-W II for the L, R, SL and SR speakers. Depending on where your center channel will be installed (wall vs ceiling) you can consider from the same lines. I'd suggest spending a bit more on the C speaker and the people at Crutchfield can help you narrow down the right options. If you are still in the wiring phase, may I suggest running additional lines in the event you want to add to your setup later - will save a lot of time and $$$.

I own 4 of these which I use for my top front and top rear speakers in my 5.4.2 home theater. They supply the Dolby Atmos sound and they do it very well. Clean, clear secondary audio channel sound fill the room. They complete the audio picture by applying the sound effects to right spots on the listening canvas. Car chases, crashes and explosions engulf you, bring you right to the center of the audio. I'm very happy I bought these. If you purchase them you won't have any regrets.
[ TERRY A  May 13, 2019 ]
Hey Steve, I bought two of these speakers for my rears in an open floor plan. They sound fantastic (although they are not, strictly speaking, in the correct placement for a 5.1 system. I would not, however, recommend them for your fronts. It will look clean but the front sound stage will not sound correct because of the speakers being on the ceiling directing sound towards the floor. If you want a clean look I would recommend in-wall speakers (Klipsch has several models). I' use the RP-8000 Floor Standing Speakers and they sound awesome...but are huge. I am also running a SPL-120SW Klipsch Sub and it sounds pretty good but gets muddled with really low lows. I might recommend an SVS PSB2000 for the sub, depending on budget. For the reciever, I've got a Denon AVR 3400 and I'm happy with it.
[ Tyler  May 13, 2019 ]
I believe getting 2 of the CDT 5650 would be great for ceiling in the back. I would get a tower or bookshelf speaker for the front. Also having a really nice center channel from klipsch is money well spent.
[ Philip  May 13, 2019 ]
I have no room for rear surrounds as the bar cabinet takes up half of the back wall. Could you suggest a Klipsch wall speaker that could be used as a rear surround?

I bought these speakers for in-ceiling install to bolster the Klipsch R-5800-W II in-wall surround system I already had. Sound is incredible, I'm very pleased with the results. Are you looking for something in-wall, or on-wall - its not clear from your description.
[ JEREMY  Mar 08, 2019 ]
It is my opinion and of many others that the rear surrounds add little to the surround experience. Just make certain your side surrounds are slightly to the rear of the main listening position. You would be better spending the money for in ceiling speakers in a 5.1.2 or better yet in a 5.1.4 Atmos configuration. See the on line speaker configurations for Atmos home theater set up on the Dolby Atmos web site, you' be glad you did.
[ RAYMOND  Mar 03, 2019 ]
Not sure I can answer this for this application as I use the 5650s for music not surround. But I will say the sound is fabulous, and the adjustable directionality works very well for our application. If you are restricted to ceiling speakers for surround, I think the should quality and directional capabilities would be a great fit.
[ Tom  Mar 02, 2019 ]
Hello, not sure what other speakers you are using, but in wall would work well. These are being used as my atmos ele action speakers in ceiling as I have other klipsch refference speakers. I would use an in wall, but match them to your existing speakers.
[ Leonard  Mar 02, 2019 ]
I personally do not use this for my rear. I use it for my front speakers (just layout constraints like you have) and they work well. Just want to note, I'm not a sound perfectionist. I'm just looking for much better sound in my rooms vs speakers on tvs or sound bars .
[ JOHN  Mar 02, 2019 ]
Can you cover these speakers with insulation?
[ chris  Oct 11, 2018 ]
3 answers
If you are referring to the rear of the cone and the driver, yes. Technically, yes you can however that is not advised. If at all possible, try to move the insulation out of the way so it won't be on the driver. Personally, I used and recommend the ME-650-C. That's a metal enclosure that is insulated, but leaves room above the driver for proper operation and sound production.
[ Ronald  Oct 11, 2018 ]
That's a good question. I guess it depends on where you install the speaker...I installed mine in the ceiling of the upstairs, so the insulation would ultimately allow moisture in during the humid summer months. So I used speaker baffles to protect the speaker from dust and as a moisture barrier. I used 10" XTC baffles (Item # 237XT10) and sprayed Great Stuff for windows (the blue can) between the ceiling (plywood support and baffle) to form a seal and seems to have worked very well. Also, the speaker has some weight, so since I'm doing a full remodel I placed 3/8" plywood between the rafters as a support for the speaker then cut the drywall to fit over the plywood...the speaker sits on the drywall and the back clips secures the speaker against the plywood, it worked well.
[ PHIL  Oct 11, 2018 ]
Yes, it is all sealed in back. Awesome product!
[ DZMITRY  Oct 11, 2018 ]
I am wanting to use 6 of these in ceiling speakers 4 for Dolby Atmos and 2 for left and right surround sound. First question, what is the best speaker placement for this arrangement. Room size is 18' x 24' viewing is on the shorter dimension roughly 16' to projector screen. Second question, I have blown in insulation in the ceiling, do I need to protect the back of the speakers? If so, what size box should I build to prevent insulation from get inside and still allow proper air flow?
[ Thomas  Jun 13, 2018 ]
1 answer
For a Dolby Atmos system, it's generally recommended that *only* the Atmos speakers go in your ceiling; so while the Klipsch CDT-5650 would be a great choice for overhead/Atmos speakers, you may want to consider a different option for the surround speakers in your setup. For more assistance, or to discuss further, please contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. Thanks!

I am planning to setup home theater in a medium size 12x16 room. Can we use 5 of these 5650-C for home theater setup ? Or these good only for rears ?
[ Srini  Dec 18, 2017 ]
1 answer
If you want all 5 of the primary channels (front left, center, front right, rear right, rear left) in-ceiling, sure, you can use the CDT-5650-C II for all of them. You'll also want to add a powered subwoofer for the deepest bass effects (LFE). I hope that helps My Bio:
