Bowers & Wilkins M-1 speaker

Bowers & Wilkins M-1 speakers offer a big sound from a pair of compact, low-profile speakers.

A sleek, versatile satellite speaker

The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 is designed to serve just about any role in your home theatre system. You can set up two for stereo music, add more to serve as surround speakers, and even mount one horizontally as a centre channel speaker. The speaker's 4" woven glass fibre cone woofer and 1" metal dome tweeter deliver crisp, accurate sound for music, TV, and movies.

Smart design

Part of the secret of the M-1's powerful sound is the clamshell enclosure. It's formed from two interlocking, continuously curving sections, so there are no joints or seams. That allows for carefully controlle airflow that reduces noise.

Of course, the speakers' drivers are something special, too. The tweeters are tube-loaded, borrowing an idea from Bowers & Wilkins' revolutionary Nautilus floor-standers.

The midbass/midrange driver also benefits from ideas developed in Bowers & Wilkins' distinguished speaker lineup. It features an Anti-Resonance plug that debuted with their PM1 loudspeaker. It's a mushroom-shaped device made of polymer foam that soaks up resonance and reduces cone break-up, creating unparalleled clarity and detail in the midrange.

Multiple mounting options

The M-1's built-in adjustable tabletop stand lets you mount the speaker vertically or horizontally, and angle the speaker toward your listening position. The included wall mount offers similar positioning options, and comes with a decorative bracket cover. The tabletop stand and wall brackets have built-in speaker terminals that let you route speaker wire internally for the cleanest possible look.

Bowers & Wilkins has created floor stands just for the M-1, to help reduce unwanted resonance and place them for optimal sound.

Get more bass

A pair of M-1 speakers has good bass response especially considering how small these speakers are. But to get the best possible performancee, we suggest using a subwoofer, especially for home theatre applications. Bowers & Wilkins recommends the ASW608 powered subwoofer is as an ideal match.

Features

Tube-Loaded, Aluminum Dome Tweeter: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 satellite loudspeaker features a 1" aluminum dome tweeter. As well as featuring a unique surround material, the aluminum dome tweeter is tube-loaded; a design innovation B&W first introduced on their groundbreaking Nautilus loudspeaker. The tube works by soaking up unwanted resonance from the back of the tweeter, so the sound you hear from the front is as detailed and precise as possible.

Woven Glass-Fiber Midbass/Midrange Driver: The M-1 satellite loudspeaker houses a 4" woven glass-fiber midbass/midrange driver with rubber surround. This redesigned midbass/midrange driver features B&W's AntiResonance Plug; an acoustic innovation first seen on B&W's high-end PM1 loudspeaker. Constructed from polymer foam, the mushroom-shaped device soaks up resonance like a sponge while also reducing cone break-up, creating unparalleled clarity and detail in the midrange.

Bass Port: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 utilizes a rear-firing port for greater efficiency and increased bass response from a compact satellite loudspeaker.

Clamshell Cabinet: The key to the M-1's rock-solid sound is its unified, integrated, "clamshell" enclosure. The "clamshell"-style cabinet is formed from just two interlocking, continuously curving sections. The cabinet fits together beautifully with a minimum of noise-inducing seams and joints. The result is a speaker that's rigid, well-damped, and air-tight. The M-1 is available in a Matte Black or Matte White finish

Spring-Post Terminals with Cable Management: The B&W M-1 satellite loudspeaker is outfitted with both spring-post terminals and screw-down terminals. The pre-installed pedestal base has integrated spring-post terminals. The wall-mount bracket has integrated screw-down terminals. Either terminal set will accept up to 14AWG speaker wire. When connected the speaker wire disappears into the back of the table-top stand or wall-mount bracket via a specially-designed, pre-wired arm support.

Note: The spring-post and screw-down terminals will not accept banana plugs, pin-connectors, or spade-lugs.

Mounting Options: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 offers flexible mounting options with the pre-installed table-top stand, included wall-mount bracket, and optional floorstands (sold separately). Each mounting option allows you position the speaker vertically or horizontally. The horizontal orientation allows you to use the speaker as a center channel. The "B&W" logo badge on the speaker grille also rotates vertically or horizontally.

  • Table-Top Stand: The pre-installed table-top stand features a ball-and-socket mechanism that allows you to position the M-1 speaker horizontally or vertically. The table-top stand features a rubber foot that provides safe and secure placement on a shelf, table, desk, or other piece of furniture. The table-top stand allows you tilt the speaker upward in case your mounting surface is too low.
  • Wall-Mount Bracket: The M-1 speaker can also be mounted to your wall (vertically or horizontally), using the included wall bracket. The base of the table-top stand will need to be removed, leaving only the ball-and-socket arm assembly attached to the speaker. Once the included bracket is screwed into your wall studs (screws not supplied), the arm assembly of the speaker attaches and secures to the bracket. The ball-and-socket arm assembly allows you to angle the speaker downward 27-degrees to aim the sound at your listening area. This wall-mount bracket should never be used to attach M-1 speaker to a ceiling. The M-1 is not compatible with other models of wall-mount brackets.
  • Optional Speaker Stands: The optional B&W speaker stands (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) match the M-1 satellites speakers, placing them at the ideal listening height. The speaker stands place the M-1 speaker in a vertical or horizontal orientation. The table-top pedestal stand is removed to mount the M-1 speaker's ball-and-sock arm assembly to the B&W speaker stands.

Note: A torx-key (hidden under the removable rubber foot of the pedestal stand) is used to make mounting adjustments to the pedestal stand, ball-and-sock arm assembly, and wall-mount bracket, as well as the optional speaker stands.

Applications: The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 satellite loudspeaker can be used in a stereo or home theater application; they sound great for both music and movie soundtracks. Use a pair of M-1 satellite loudspeakers to create an unobtrusive 2ch stereo speaker system, five M-1 satellite speakers to build a 5ch home theater speaker system, or use a pair of M1 satellite loudspeakers as rear surrounds with large B&W loudspeakers up front in a home theater application. You can even use multiple M1 satellite speakers in a distributed audio application.

  • In a distributed audio application, the M-1 speaker is typically mounted more than 8' high on the wall and angled down.
  • For stereo applications, a pair of M-1 speakers should be mounted as close to ear level as possible or angled to point at ear level of the main seated listening position. The M-1 speakers should also be angled between 40- and 60-degrees at the main listening position.
  • In a home theater application, the front left and right speaker should be as close to the center of the screen as possible and equal distant from sides of the TV and the main listening position. The center speaker can be positioned above or below the screen; whichever is closed to ear level. The surround speakers are best placed at least 2' above ear level and at a 120-degree angle behind the main listening area.

Optional Powered Sub: Add a Bowers & Wilkins powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) for bigger, deeper bass response.

Dimensions: The following dimensions are with a the table-top pedestal stand and the wall-mount bracket in either a vertical or horizontal position.

  • With Table-Top Stand: Vertical or Horizontal
    • Vertical Position: 4.5" (w) x 9.75" (h) x 6.5" (d)
    • Horizontal Position: 6.5" (w) x 5.75" (h) x 6.5" (d)

Q
Can I use them as atmos hight speakers ?
slawomir  Nov 23, 2022

A
They can be mounted to the wall and tilted down 27 degrees which does allow them to be installed as wall mounted Atmos speakers!

Q
What speaker wires do you suggest for the M1 speakers ?
chuck  Jan 17, 2022
2 answers
A
Depending on the distance, you can probably get away with 16 gauge wires. The M1 speakers are B&W's entry point speakers. You could even try using 18 gauge wires to see if you can hear a difference. Honestly, there are times I've used 14 gauge, 16 gauge and 18 gauge wire and couldn't tell the difference. I had a client who bought special cables that cost more than the equipment itself. I could honestly say I could not tell the difference. However, I will admit, I'm probably a little deaf due to all the poorly engineered audio systems in my cars when I was younger.

I have some a PROFLEX cable's, medium size, using them for rears.

Can the B&W M1 hang from a ceiling for Rear Surround Efforts Horizontal safely?

I believe they can. I'm only using them for front (have no way to have rears in my room). they come with mounting brackets

Hi Donald, Thank You So Much. I'm certainly going to take your advice to find the stud. B & W horizontal positioning is wicked. No other, has this design unless you install outdoor speakers. Thanks again and Enjoy your holidays??????????
english  Dec 08, 2020
A
I just mounted my new pair over the weekend on the back wall of my great room horizontally hanging down from the wall mounts and it worked perfectly and they sound amazing with the Denon receiver I also purchased. Should be no problem mounting on the ceiling but with their weight, I recommend finding the studs in the ceiling and not relying on wall anchors into the sheetrock.

These speakers are shipped with the stands in the box. For that reason, we do not offer them as replacement items. If you need a replacement set, I recommend contacting B&W on 978-664-2870 to check into getting them

The stands came with our speakers in the box. We chose to wall mount them, so we did not use them. They are amazing speakers, brought new life to our living room.

Q
how are the wires connected to these speakers???
timothy  Mar 11, 2020

A
Please download the manual to check how these speakers are connected through the base or a wall bracket.
julio  Mar 12, 2020
A
The speaker wire connects to the base . The plus and minus wires enter the base through two small holes in the back of the base, and connect to the terminals inside the base. A wall mount is also included in which case the wires connect to the wall mount. The base is removed & speaker pedestal plugs into the wall mount. If you go to Bower& Wilkins web site, you can find the M-1 manual you will see diagrams of the set ups.
james g  Mar 12, 2020
A
The base and wall mount both have connectors on them. The stem is a 'plug' which can plug into either, and takes the signal up to the speaker. When using the wall mount, the wires are completely concealed. Quite ingenious, really.

Q
I need a pair of speakers capable of being mounted on the ceiling. With the proprietary mounts provided can they be mounted securely on the ceiling? Does anyone have experience doing so with the m-1's? Is it recommended or possible? Thanks.
robert  Jan 08, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Robert, and thank you for your question. The Bowers & Wilkins M-1 are not ceiling mountable. The provided proprietary wall mounts are for the wall only. The details page states these mounts cannot be used for mounting to a ceiling. There are other brands of speakers that use a universal 1/4-20 threaded insert. Those with a third party ceiling mount would work for your application. For additional help with selections, please call on of our advisors at 800-324-9695.

Q
Is it just me, or do the plastic wall mount covers not fit over the wall mount assembly? Once I have everything tightened down, and ready to click onto the cover, due to the angle of the "stem" and the 2 black clamp screws that protrude from the mount, I cannot get the cover over the mount.

Brian, I decided against mounting my speakers on the wall but instead used the B&W M1 custom speaker stands. The stands consumed little floor space and provided a very neat appearance; however, the stands are costly. Ben

It's been a year since I put these speakers up and I have the memory of a gnat. As I recall I had to jostle them a little, but they do fit. All I can suggest is to follow their instructions and youtube a video.
max a  Sep 25, 2021
A
You will have to simply cut the little square outline on the plastic mount cover. I carefully used a razor blade to cut thru, I made cuts on the two side lines and then you can just pull down on it and it will snap off making room for the wire.
scott d  Sep 25, 2021

You can turn the speaker sideways, without seeing the application it's hard to help, great little speaker.
ray  Sep 25, 2021
Q
Can I mount the M1 to a third party floor stand? The reason I am asking the the piece that comes of the speaker, is that removable ? If so, can it be mounted with stand other than the one from B&W?
trin  Mar 02, 2021
9 answers
A
The stand and additional wall mount are fully removable. If you match the bolt pattern, I'd guess that any stand will work.
james m  Mar 06, 2021
A
Hi Trin, The "foot" of your M1 speaker is removable, however you won't be able to set it on a stand (actually, you only remove the foot if you are going to wall-mount, which requires the other extension. Check out the Sanus website for speaker stands; they may be able to help you in your situation. Good luck! Marcel
marcel  Mar 03, 2021
A
I don't think it would work with a third party mount unless you just set the speaker on a stand and maybe fasten it with double side tape or some kind of adhesive. They come with a wall or surface mount and the part that attaches to the speaker is a round ball mount type for adjustment. It may be possible to mount it another way but might take some fabrication
mark  Mar 02, 2021
A
no, the B&W stand provides the electrical connection to the wires. In the box is a wall bracket. You can use that
william  Mar 02, 2021
A
No. The speaker wires actually attach in the base.
derek  Mar 02, 2021
A
The thing about these speakers is that either the stand or wall mount brackets are where the speaker wire terminals are located. So they come from the factory with the short stands installed. The wall brackets are supplied but you must use one or the other. In short I don't think you could use another stand. And I do believe B&W offers a floor stand for these. Great speakers though. I have mine mounted on my wall.
jeremy  Mar 02, 2021
A
Unless you screw through the flat base, I would say no. The base of the post has terminals that interface with an integrated circuit panel. It will only "plug" into the Flat base or the wall mount base. These speakers are very heavy and they could be trusted to stay put as long as they are place on a flat and stable surface.
robert w  Mar 02, 2021
A
The stand is removable but you cannot use a third-party stand. It would be very difficult to re-create the mechanism that connects to the support arm.
kenneth  Mar 02, 2021
A
The mounts are detachable so you can use as a wall speaker. You could place the M1 on a flat surface. It also has a flat surface on its side. In order to secure the M1 to a 3rd party stand you would need to figure a way to prevent it from falling off (if jostled). i.e. velcro strips, adhesive, etc.

I used in wall 14. I don't think you should have an issue with 12. Probably 10 either.
jeremy  Jan 21, 2021
A
The M1 speaker has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and a recommended input power rating of 20-100 watts (unclipped) so 14 gauge speaker wire is plenty (and B&W recommended) unless the wiring run will exceed 50 feet.

Since the stands have spring clips would the best connection be made with bare wires (14 gauge) rather than banana plugs (Crutchfield speaker wire)?

I used 14 gauge speaker wire
joseph  Jan 28, 2021

If you wall mount them you must bare wire them. There is no room for banana plugs. If you mount them on a horizontal surface, you could use banana plugs.
max a  Dec 28, 2020
A
I connected with bare wire. No problems.
philip  Dec 28, 2020

Mine are wall mounted, but I would probably just use the bare wires. I don't know if a banana plug would fit. You could also do a pin plug if you don't want to deal with the bare wire.
