JBL BassPro Hub installation and review

A subwoofer that fits in the spare tire

Our vehicle electronics buyer, Peter, has been in the car audio business for decades. And he was very unsatisfied with the stereo system in his 2012 Mazda 5 — it just didn’t have any bass. Then he found out about the JBL BassPro Hub

No space for bass

One of the big challenges was that there wasn't enough space for a subwoofer in his minivan with the third row seat. He had tried under-seat woofers and free-standing boxes — they all sacrificed too much storage space, or didn't provide enough bass to fill the vehicle. So when he heard about this solution from JBL, it seemed great because he thought it might allow him to get the bass he wanted without sacrificing what little space he had.

Spare tire location of Mazda 5

"Then, when our JBL rep first played the BassPro Hub for me, I literally said, 'I love it! Can we take it out right now and see if it fits in my car?' We took it out, dry-fit it in my vehicle, and it fit. Soon, I installed my own. The performance is amazing, it really is. It adds that lower couple of octaves that were missing. Most full-range speakers don't play accurately below sixty hertz, so now I get to hear those notes."

Diagram of the spare tire subwoofer installation order

Even though the BassPro Hub is under 15" in diameter, you'll still want to measure your spare to see if it'll fit.

A smart design

What we love about the BassPro Hub is the design. Its 11" subwoofer is built super-tough, and the 200-watt class-D amplifier is specially designed to complement the sub. Peter has an aftermarket stereo, so he hooked it up with patch cables connected to the preamp inputs. But he could’ve used it with a factory stereo, too.

As with any powered sub installation, you run signal and power wires. After that, it’s pretty simple: it goes in the spare tire — just drops right inside the rim and secures with its included post and wingnut. It’s best with full-size spares, but can work with some smaller spares (like his), too. That's usually wasted space in most cars — JBL took advantage of that with this sub's design.

Installing his JBL BassPro Hub in the trunk of his car

Peter also installed some Boom Mat on the exposed metal in the spare tire area. This sound-deadening material helps eliminate reverberations and any other unwanted noises the subwoofer might induce. The result is better sounding, more powerful bass from the subwoofer.

JBL BassPro Hub with remote

Clever remote control

To save space on the enclosure, JBL puts all the controls on a wired remote, which Peter put in the glove box. It lets him set the gain and crossover, and adjust the bass from his listening position." It’s smart. I like it a lot."

Questions or need more information?

The BassPro Hub is about 6-7/16" high and 14-1/4" wide. You'll have to measure the inside of your spare tire hub to see if the sub will fit or not. Hi Buck, I have a 2023 model Jeep compass which has 4 alpine speakers (2Front 2 Rear). I am looking forward to connect the 4 speakers to a 4 Channel Amplifier. Additionally, I am looking to install a Subwoofer but not at the cost of boot space . So, researched and found JBL bass hub very interesting as it goes into the boot tyre ( mine is 16inch) and hides into the boot. I just want to understand - which amplifier and config would be the best ? My preference is JBL.. - Another key question, since the hub has an inbuilt amplifier, would this directly connect to the Car head unit instead of amplifier? - I can't seem to find out an answer whether the current JEEP compass head unit + installing a new 4 channel amp would support the kind of configuration I am looking for. The main confusion is whether the subwoofer HUB should connect directly to headunit or amp? And if this could require 5 channel amp ( which I don't want to go for)..Looking forward to your response as I can't seem to get any clear expert view..Thanks

Anup, In order to add an amplifier and subwoofer to your vehicle, you will probably need some sort of interface device, like a PAC LPA-E.4 LocPro Advanced line output converter that'll supply signal for your aftermarket amplifiers. The JBL Pro Hub has its own built-in amp, so it won't need a separate one.

Do you sell the 18 pin harness seprartly or do you have to get the entire system to get the harness?

When running my 12v to better protect would i go ahead and run wire conduit throughout the whole wire from battery to amp also would I do the same for wires from headunit to amp as well

Ernie, Adding a conduit system to protect your wiring in your vehicle may be challenging and definitely is over-kill. Most people use a wire loom to protect wiring in interior automotive applications.

Iv seen posted this websit that I will need a 10gauge wire kit,I got the kit and it comes with a 30amp fuse for the 12v will the jbl run on a 30amp fuse through the 12v?the manual says 40amp but if I use or can I use a 40a fuse without it getting the wire to hot is it safe. or do I just stick with a 30amp.

Ernie, Use the fuse that came with the wiring kit. It was designed specifically for the power wire to protect it and your vehicle from catastrophic damage due to a short circuit.

Is there a way to by-pass the head unit? Splice into existing harness the plugs into my factory amp in the trunk? 2013 Lexus GS350

Miles, The head unit of your vehicle can't be replaced because of dash configuration, safety, and electrical compatibility issues. You may be able to find a T-harness and factory stereo processor package that'll let you customize the tune and add an aftermarket amplifier. Give us a call, so an Advisor can help you pick the right gear for your system.

I have a 2001 BMW 540i with an aftermarket (Eonon) Android based radio. It has a dedicated subwoofer with RCA connector on the end. What gauge would I run to the back? Would I need a splitter for the single cable to go into R and L inputs? The battery is back there, so it would be a simple matter of finding a switched circuit to tap off of. If so, what would be the best fuse amp load to go with?

Lewis, It's not at all clear what you have and what you want to do with it. Give us a call and talk to one of our Advisors. We can help you choose the right gear and give you the right advice on how to install it.

Hi. I'm looking at the JBL BassPro Hub for a 2022 Mazda CX-5 with the standard 6-speaker system (not the Bose as is found in the higher trim levels). I'm getting confused on the need for a line output converter. Do I have to add a LOC to the install to get the JBL to perform optimally? I had a local car audio shop that had the Kicker 46HS10 I was looking at and he said I absolutely would want to include a LOC to optimize the performance. Would that be the case with the JBL? Even if a LOC is not needed for the JBL can you explain any benefit by using a LOC with this powered sub just so I can get educated on this subject? Thank you.

Scott, Matching output and input levels is a tricky thing. That powered subwoofer can take a speaker-level input as high as 10 volts RMS, which translates to about 25 watts for a normal speaker. Your vehicle has a factory amplifier of unknown output level - possibly over 25 watts - so using a line output converter (LOC) for your sub's input makes sense.

So I lost the power cord when I got into a wreck and took out the sub. Would anyone know a way to get a new one or make it able to work ? Or can I possibly still sell it ?

Jazmine, If you purchased your sub from Crutchfield, you can call for free tech assistance for replacing a lost power cord. Otherwise, reach out to JBL for a replacement.

What other wires and kits will I need to purchase for this install?

Juan, You'll need a 10-gauge amp power wiring kit, plus either RCA cables for your aftermarket receiver or speaker wires for connecting the sub's inputs to a factory radio. Give us a call so an Advisor can help you get everything you need.
