JVC Direct Replacement car stereos
A revolutionary new system for upgrading your dash — in more vehicles than ever before
Direct Replacement is an innovative way to replace factory car stereos developed by ADS in partnership with JVC and Kenwood. We checked out JVC's Direct Replacement lineup at an industry event in Texas. We came away impressed with how seamlessly the radios integrated with the vehicles, while improving the key features — all without changing the dash.
"No" is a word we don't like to use with our customers. But since the mid-2000s, we've been saying it more and more for customers who ask us about replacing the factory radio in their new vehicles.
Automakers have done a lot to improve the longevity of their cars over the years. Modernized dashboard designs have taken what used to be the stereo and turned it into a high-tech media center for controlling not just the music, but many of the car’s other functions as well. This new tech is frustrating for aftermarket radio manufacturers, retailers like Crutchfield, and the car-buying public because it makes it virtually impossible to upgrade these media centers. And the problem has only accelerated over the past few years with fewer and fewer vehicles having standard 2"- or 4"-tall dash openings.
Thankfully, JVC and Kenwood have teamed up with ADS (makers of the iDatalink Maestro RR and Maestro RR2 interfaces) to bring aftermarket car stereo replacement possibilities back to the good old days, only better. Much better.

Introducing Direct Replacement
"Direct Replacement" is the name of the system of packages that JVC and Kenwood are debuting in partnership with ADS for car stereo upgrades. It addresses two main groups of car stereo owners:
- Those for whom an aftermarket stereo replacement has been previously nonexistent, and
- Those for whom an aftermarket radio replacement solution exists, but it involves a complicated installation which requires modification of the dash and often leads to a very different interface than the OEM layout.
Direct Replacement satisifies both groups by offering elegant aftermarket solutions with an 8" or 10.1" display that can work in a wide variety of vehicles, many of which have been off-limits until now. How many? According to JVC and ADS, up to 50 million vehicles currently on the road can benefit from a Direct Replacement upgrade. That's an increase in availability for 2022 model-year cars alone from 19% to 70%. And iDatalink is working to outfit even more makes and models in the future.
Seeing it for ourselves
JVC and ADS invited Crutchfield to a recent industry event in Dallas called "JVC Hot Shots Reloaded III" to see Direct Replacement firsthand. We were given a lot of facts and figures and a chance to see a full installation on a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado. It was eye-opening how simple and elegant the process would be for most vehicles, leading to a result in the dash that is much better than the factory and other solutions on the market right now, while retaining much of the OEM fit and feel.
How the JVC Direct Replacement packages work
Let's get this out of the way first: JVC Direct Replacement solutions are packages. The end result is a new car stereo, yes, but there are at least four main pieces involved with every installation, and you'll need all of them to make it all work:
- JVC receiver
- iDatalink Maestro APX bracket
- iDatalink Maestro interface module
- connecting harness
1. A JVC Direct Replacement receiver
The first piece of the package is the receiver. JVC offers two models:
- JVC KW-Z800AW digital multimedia receiver with 8" display
- JVC KW-Z1000AW digital multimedia receiver with 10.1" floating display

We'll discuss the use cases and benefits of these radios below.
2. iDatalink Maestro APX bracket
The second part of the Direct Replacement package is the iDatalink Maestro vehicle-specific bracket kit made by ADS. The branding for these kits is APX (pronounced "apex"). Each APX bracket works with several car models going back as early as 2009, some of which have never had a good aftermarket solution available before (we see you, Nissan/Infiniti owners!). When you enter your vehicle information in Crutchfield's Outfit My Car tool or contact one of our Advisors, we'll find the right APX bracket to fit your vehicle.
3. iDatalink Maestro interface module
The third component of the Direct Replacement package is the iDatalink interface module, either the Maestro RR or Maestro RR2. These modules do the heavy lifting of keeping most of your car's factory features while adding a few extras. As with non-Direct Replacement installations, each module must be "flashed" on a computer with your vehicle's make and model information prior to installation . Again, you will need one of these modules to make Direct Replacement work.
4. iDatalink connecting harness
The fourth necessary piece of the package is iDatalink's ACC-HU-KEN1 harness, which connects the JVC Direct Replacement stereo to the vehicle-specific T-harness included with your Maestro RR or RR2 module.
A couple of other pieces that are available
There are a handful of Direct Replacement peripherals which may or may not be required to complete some installations. One is the JVC KS-UA50 extension cable necessary for select vehicles. It'll be added to your Cart if it's necessary for your installation.
Another add-on is iDatalink's MIC1 Bluetooth® microphone interface, which is an excellent optional accessory to integrate your car's factory microphone. Without the MIC1, you'll have to install the external microphone that comes with the stereo. Like everything else about the Direct Replacement system, the iDatalink MIC1 is a game changer.
Now let's check out the two JVC stereos.

KW-Z800AW 8" replacement receiver – factory looks with vastly improved performance
The JVC KW-Z800AW digital multimedia receiver should make anyone who wants to keep their dash's factory look and feel very happy. It's a game-changer because it doesn't use a dash kit at all — it literally exchanges the existing 8" display in your vehicle with an improved screen in your factory dash bezel. The new stereo also offers a plethora of upgrades. There are no plastic dash kits, no relocating climate controls, and no tricky modifications involved.

Before and after with a Direct Replacement 8" stereo in a Ford Edge. The stereo uses the Edge's existing dash kit, so you're only seeing a new and improved screen.
JVC designed the KW-Z800AW to work in a number of Ford, Lincoln, Chevrolet, GMC, Infiniti, and Nissan vehicles, including tough-to-fit models like Corvette and Mustang. Some of these models may have had awkward and expensive solutions available before, but Direct Replacement offers a much more simple and elegant way forward, and you can continue to use your factory climate controls as they were when you bought the car. And since the display doesn't look any different than factory when the vehicle is off, it puts the radio at a much lower risk for potential theft.

KW-Z1000AW 10.1" floating-screen receiver – big-time upgrade in factory location for other screen sizes
JVC's KW-Z1000AW embraces the floating screen trend, but with an important twist. For dashes with 3", 4", 5", 7", 8.4", and even some 8" OEM screens, this stereo delivers a much larger, 10.1" screen that sits in front of the dash, but in the same location as the old display. Just like with the KW-Z800AW, there's no dash modification involved. Simply remove the OEM radio and mount the JVC receiver using the vehicle-specific APX bracket. In some cases, the chassis of the receiver may need to be mounted in a separate location within the vehicle and require the KS-UA50 extension cable to complete the installation. If that’s required in your vehicle, the included instructions will show you how and where. The folks at ADS have it all figured out!
For most installations, the Direct Replacement stereo's chassis mounts horizontally within the dash. The JVC stereo does not include a volume knob.
In a handful of cases, the Direct Replacement stereo's chassis may be mounted vertically within the dash. The JVC stereo does not include a volume knob.
In a small number of instances, the Direct Replacement stereo's chassis mounts in a kick panel away from the screen, and requires an additional extension cable.
The KW-Z1000AW works in a number of vehicles, including Ford, Lincoln, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, and RAM. As mentioned, some of the vehicles with 8" factory displays can work with this radio as well as the KW-Z800AW. And like the KW-Z800AW, there are some vehicles for which a solution already exists, but it's probably quite pricey and doesn't deliver the simplicity of Direct Replacement. One of the neatest things about this stereo is because there's no dash modification involved, it's usually possible to go back to the factory radio if you decide to sell the vehicle down the road.

More about the iDatalink APX bracket kits
Before we reveal the full benefits of the Direct Replacement packages, we want to say how impressed we were at the JVC event by how straightforward the installation of the KW-Z800AW stereo in the 2016 Silverado looked. A huge part of that was due to the APX bracket involved.
Each APX bracket is made of stamped steel for durability, and precision-tooled to fit the dash location solidly. The installation involved removing the factory radio's CD player and making new connections for the Silverado's radio control ribbon cable, but with the bracket centering the process everything went back to looking factory in just under a couple of hours.
To ensure that every installation goes smoothly, each customer must include the serial number from their APX bracket and their new JVC radio in order to flash their iDatalink Maestro RR or RR2 module.

One drawback of Direct Replacement
Yes, there is some bad news. If your factory stereo includes a CD player, it will be lost during the Direct Replacement upgrade. Not ideal, but it's a main factor for how Direct Replacement packages work in so many vehicles for which stereo replacement was previously unavailable.
To sum up many of the great benefits Direct Replacement offers, Josh from JVC has a brief explainer video:
The radio fits the car, not the car fits the radio
So that's the scoop on Direct Replacement from JVC and ADS. During the presentation in Dallas one of the JVC reps summed up their approach to the packages by saying, "We've been trying to fit the car to the radio for years — why not try to fit the radio to the car?" And that's how the packages work, especially with the 8" stereo. Whichever receiver you choose, you'll have a tremendous improvement in functionality while retaining key features and a factory-like feel. All without modifying your dash.

Hi Peter - thanks for checking in. We at Crutchfield do not make the dash kits for these Direct Replacement radios; they are manufactured by ADS/iDatalink in partnership with JVC and Kenwood (and hopefully other car stereo brands in the future). That said, the process for choosing which vehicles to outfit is based primarily on how many vehicles that were sold and are on the road currently, and how many (or few) other aftermarket options are available. The 2009 Pontiac G8 was not a top-selling car, but the unique dimensions of its factory radio mean that there are very few aftermarket options available. It's possible but uniikely that a kit will be available in the near future, but if you want to reach out to one of our Advisors they can probably come up with some alternative solutions to a better sonic experience in your G8. Good luck!
