Podcast Ep 75: First look: Sony's new True RGB TVs

We are so excited to finally be able to talk about Sony's new True RGB TVs, the Bravia 7 Mark II and Bravia 9 Mark II. JR and Huffy have had both TVs set up in the studio, and they've been sitting on their reactions ever since. The big news: Sony's True RGB backlight technology puts individual red, green, and blue diodes inside each LED. The difference in color accuracy, contrast, and light control compared to traditional LCD TVs is genuinely hard to overstate. JR and Huffy put these TVs through a gauntlet: live sports, Top Gun Maverick on 4K Blu-ray, Encanto, Game of Thrones, YouTube torture tests, and Tiny World on Apple TV+ — and came away impressed across the board.

JR and Huffy also break down the key differences between the two models (spoiler: more backlights, anti-glare screen, up to 115 inches) and share thoughts on the pedestal design, the surprisingly capable built-in speakers, and why Sony's processor is still the thing that quietly makes everything work. If you've been waiting to upgrade your TV — especially if your room gets a lot of natural light — this episode is worth a listen before you buy. Everything discussed, including links and photos, lives at crutchfield.com/podcast.

New Stinger MFDs are not just for Jeeps with Matt Palumbo, plus AudioControl's new EPICENTER bass restorers and EPIC Series products

Matt Palumbo from Stinger and AudioControl returns to the studio fresh off a vendor training with Crutchfield's sales advisors — and he brought a lot of new stuff to talk about. JR and Huffy get the full update on the Stinger HORIZON12 multifunction displays (MFD), including new direct-fit kits for GM trucks (2014–2018 and 2019+) that bring the same clean, factory-look integration that made Jeep owners love these units. Matt also discusses the new EPICENTER PRO and EPICENTER Micro PRO from AudioControl— same beloved bass-restoration tech, now with user-friendly controls on top and some fun new flexibility for the more adventurous installer.

From there, the guys dig into AudioControl's brand-new EPIC Series amps, speakers, and subwoofers built to pair perfectly with the EPICENTER experience. The EPICX subwoofers in particular got a serious workout during development — including a nightly drive-home stress test the manufacturer may or may not have survived — and the results speak for themselves. Plus, the loaded EPICX V-Series enclosures feature a surprisingly clever customizable panel that Matt actually wrapped in his hotel room the night before we recorded. Enjoy the episode.

How to get the most out of your home speakers: Placement, acoustics, and pro tips

JR and Huffy are joined by Mulligan — Crutchfield advisor, AV design specialist, and all-around full-service operation — to talk about all the inexpensive (and sometimes free) things you can do to make your home speakers sound as good as they possibly can. The conversation covers where to put your speakers and why pulling them off the wall matters more than you might think, how to treat your room's acoustics without going overboard, why you should decouple your speakers from the floor, and how to use your receiver's room calibration to take the room itself out of the equation.

Mulligan also brings a few bonus tips, including one surprisingly simple digital trick that costs absolutely nothing and can immediately improve your sound quality — no new gear required. Whether you've got a modest bookshelf setup or a serious multi-room system, this episode gives you practical, real-world ways to get more out of speakers you already own. Got questions? How to get the most out of your new car speakers: Baffles, sound deadening, and installation tips

You bought new car speakers — now what? JR and Huffy welcome Peter, a Crutchfield merchandising veteran and former sales trainer, to talk about getting your speakers to live up to their potential. The guys tackle one of car audio's most misunderstood products — speaker baffles — and set the record straight on what they actually do, when you need them, and when you might want to grab a knife to make a small modification.

From there, it's on to Fast Rings, sound deadening (Dynamat, Hushmat, SoundSkins — a little goes a long way), and installation tips that apply whether you're swapping a blown factory speaker or building a serious upgrade.

Think of it as all the stuff nobody tells you the first time you tackle a car speaker install — but absolutely should. Got questions about baffles, sound deadening, or anything car speaker related? Email the team at [email protected]. And if you want to get ahead of next month's episode — all about making your?home?speakers sound their best — send those questions in too.

You asked and we answered. Plus: Happy New Year!

JR and Huffy wrap up 2025 and the fifth season of Crutchfield: The Podcast by taking questions from our fans and providing helpful answers. Things vary from simple compliments to deep inquiries about the quality of vintage home audio gear in comparison to newer products. One savvy fan asked about a new Pioneer retro-style car stereo that’s only available in Europe (for now).

As one final gift to our listeners, JR, Zak, and Ned read and responded to some of the comments left by viewers of our YouTube channel. The comments were very observant, creative, and mostly respectful. Think Mean Tweets, but nicer!

Tom Cruise says we need to go to the theater, is he right?

In this special bonus episode Eric and JR explore the question, “Do you need to go to the theater to enjoy movies, or can they be just as good on a home theater?” To get to the bottom of this, the guys brought in some experts and did some of their own research. First they talked with Bryan Loy from Alamo Drafthouse Cinema about why people go to movies, especially at his theaters, as well as how he watches movies.

Then Eric brings his 10-year-old son Porter into the studio to share his thoughts on movies, Dolby Atmos, Minecraft, books, WWII, and more. Porter also schools JR on the lingo the kids are using these days. He’s got plenty of rizz, that’s for sure.

What can be done to improve the stereo in electric vehicles and hybrids?

JR and Eric invite Tech Support Supervisor Cris Baker into the new podcast studio at Crutchfield HQ to discuss the latest developments in EVs and hybrids and what can be done to improve their sound systems. Nice to have found your podcast. My late husband and audiophile, Tim, and I used to make pretty frequent trips to Charlottesville and Crutchfield. Lots of our home theater came from Crutchfield too. Speaking of that, I suggest a roundtable about migrating from an older setup to a new one. I have an old Sony AVR (STR-DN1030!) in our setup and want to change over to the STR-AV5000ES. We are almost entirely wired with DVD player, an old LaserDisc, and plenty of speakers. I plan on labelling all the cables/wires one snowy or rainy day soon, but I was surprised not to find anybody on YouTube or elsewhere discussing what to remember in the changeover process.

The episode with Aaron Cochran of Balaton Marketing was the best one yet! I really enjoyed hearing his perspective on the industry, the various equipment he has at his home (including that fantastic McIntosh MAC6700), his thoughts on various music formats, and his overall enthusiasm. Plus he has good taste (I'm a fellow Klipsch fan).

Hi Samir, First of all, thanks for the great feedback, and thanks for listening to our little show. We have a lot of fun making it, so it's nice to know there's people out there picking up what we are putting down. Aaron is more than just a business partner to Crutchfield, he's a true friend. We love it when he comes to our contact centers to deliver some of the best product training we see all year. He knows what our Advisors need to see and hear to best help our customers. He's also hilarious, with great taste in music and gear. He was a natural fit for one of the very few non-Crutchfield employees we've interviewed on Crutchfield: The Podcast. We will make sure to pass along your comment directly to Aaron himself. Thanks again for your support, tell your friends about us! JR

Great podcasts. Fun to listen to folks talking about their top tier gear. Luckily I'm having good luck with my budget line of Polks and El Cheap-O Sonys. But, I sure would like to be able to side by side listen to some more expensive speakers against my current ones. The SVS products look great and I have thought they must be much better than my cheap speakers. Proof is in the pudding. Like so many other folks, I can't afford to drop a mortgage payment into speakers that may or may not be better. I tried to get in on the SVS contest, but must be the $2000 shopping spree has been closed? The link goes to a holding page.

Kevin, as far as listening to some new speakers side-by-side with your old speakers, that would indeed be the best way to know for sure if they are worth the price tag. We've been asked this question a lot over the last 45 years. Here's what I recommend you do: First, call or chat with one of our Advisors. We train our Advisors to be able to discuss with you your music, your room, your power source, your listening preferences. By doing that, you and your Advisor will likely be able to determine which new speakers are the most likely to blow your mind. And when you buy them, and get them home, you'll have 60 days to make sure that you and your Advisor did indeed pick the right speakers. That's enough time to play all sorts of different songs, from all your different music sources, and in as many situations as possible (parties, critical listening, background music, home theater, etc). If they're not for you, you can get a refund, minus a small return shipping fee, if you choose to return your speakers within 60 days.

Hi Mike! Thanks for reaching out to us. We did not carry Dynaudio back in 1999. So, to be 100% sure I had correct info for the speakers you have, I spoke to our Sales Rep and he assured me that Dynaudio still uses similar materials today for their soft dome tweeters as they did in your Audience 50s. So, a Dynaudio center channel is likely the closest thing to a perfect voice match as you are going to find. Besides tweeter materials, the other things to consider are mid/woofer size, impedance, frequency response, and sensitivity. Your Audience 50s are 4-ohm speakers, with a sensitivity around 87dB, with a 6-1/2" woofer, and a frequency response of around 46Hz -27kHz. The current Dynaudio center channel that is closest to those specs would be the Emit M15C. The tweeter is similar, the woofers are a tad smaller, but there's two of them that drop down almost as low as the 6-1/2" woofer on your 50s. They are 4-ohm, with a sensitivity of 86 dB, so, it really doesn't get much closer than that. If you want to have a perfect, voice matched front three home theater speakers, you'll want to upgrade those Audience 50 speakers to something that can be matched exactly to a modern center channel. And if you were to upgrade all three speakers, I'd recommend the Dynaudio Emit M20 to go with that same center channel.

Love the podcast and look forward to it each week. I am wondering what you would recommend for a center channel in this setup. We have Dynaudio Audience 50 bookshelf speakers from 1999 and a Klipsch R-10WI sub we added a couple years ago. The receiver is a Denon AVRX2300W. Dynaudio no longer makes the Audience line and I am planning on getting new equipment in 5-6 years after a remodel, but am unsure what brand I would ultimately go with at that time. What would be a good option for the near term? Thank you.
